11 reviews for Eighteen Twenty Bar
The OYE was here last Friday and it was really fun. The bar sits directly next door to JoyStix, which is a retail shop selling 80's & 90's vintage arcade games and pinball machines. Twice a month (The first Friday and last Friday), JoyStix opens up its shop for Eighteen Twenty Bar patrons to enjoy an unlimited adventure for only $15. Because it was OYE, they opened up shop especially for us!
Eighteen Twenty itself though is a cool bar. Plenty of seating but enough room to stand around and hear the person next to you talking. They also have one of those photobooths too. The beer selection is decent (although they ran out of Shiner that night for which I shed a couple of tears). I loved JoyStix though, because it has seriusly every game you could think of. Street Fighter, Mortal Combat, BuckHunter, Paperboy!, Pacman, TimeCrisis....you name it, they got it. I definitely recommend this bar, ESPECIALLY on the first or last Friday of each month!
So I've been to 18-20 a few times now, firstly with the Yelp OYE whereupon we got access to the Joystix section of the place complete with arcade games going back to before I was just a mere twinkle in my fathers eye to more modern-ish arcade games that we all know and love. Also, more pinball machines than you can shake a stick at! Other times I have been here has simply been for a few drinks and to be fair 18-20 provides a good decent enough venue for doing just that.
It may be obvious by the way this review is being written 18-20 doesn't exactly jump of the page for me and excite me all that much however don't get me wrong, I do like this place just it is what it is and that is a decent bar downtown where you can watch the game or get slaughtered with your friends. Yes the place does have a "Cheers" friendly atmosphere and yes they do have a good selection of beers and spirits so all these things point in the right direction. Big TV screen behind the bar to watch the game plus a shabby pool table in the middle of the bar to eat up your quarters.
Overall I am satisfied with 18-20 and will no doubt be back again and again, I think it's definitely a good "stop off" place if you are downtown or going to a game/show. I will call upon this joint again but mainly cos I am a creature of habit and tend to return to places I know well and don't cost and arm and a leg. 18-20 hits the mark on both these points and therefore gets a 3/5 from me.
I just really really like this place. It is downtown over by Minute Made park right next to Joystix. It has friendly service, is clean, and all kinds of places to sit, quaff your favorite beverage and eat.
You can hang out at the bar and join in on the friendly conversation or chill on one of the leather couches for a little more intimacy. There is also a small outside area to enjoy the weather and smoke.
Feel free to drop some cash into the jukebox and play your favorite tunes. If you're bored of all that, walk right over to Joystix and play some of your favorite classic video games.
So I thought I had reviewed this place a while back when I first went here... but it seems that I forgot. Just went back two days ago, and it was exactly how I remembered it from months ago. The bar itself has great soft lighting, so it's a primo place to bring a first date. The atmosphere is chill, and the seating is nice. Parking is easy, but since I've never actually bought a drink here I can't comment on that part of it. Last time I was there a guy bought me one and later had his hand on my leg... but I think that was just him, and not a characteristic of the place.
Best part of the bar... it's next to Joystix. And they have a photo booth... who doesn't like those?
This place is just like Cheers. After going only once all the bartenders knew my name. Great prices for industry patrons. Some fridays they open the arcade next door where you pay a cover and then play oldschool classic games untill all the cheap drinks finally get to you! The music is played by a state of the art juke box where you can create your own playlist. What a great place to meet the most interesting people.
Only warning: you'll have such a good time here, you MIGHT become an alcoholic! :) (only kidding)
EighteenTwenty has been around for a few years already, but the venue itself dates back to the early 70s when it served as a brothel. Just ask cutie with a booty bartender, Michael, or the owner. They have plenty of entertaining stories, and never get tired of sharing them with patrons.
Since it's on the outskirts of downtown, regulars consist of peeps that live by nearby lofts, those headed to a game at Minute Maid/Toyota Center, or pre-partying before hitting up Warehouse Live for a good show.
What I love best about EighteenTwenty is the look, feel and amazing service. The place is reminicent of "Cheers," and come often, everybody will know your name.
Dark mahogany walls, black leather furniture, initimate candel light a few tvs, pool table and jukebox keep the small crowd at ease. But things can get wild here. If you plan on hosting a party of some sort, EighteenTwenty is the kind of bar that you and your gang could easily "take over."
As for the menu, Michael can make a mean dirty martini ... and they have a fair selection of beer--Lone Star for peeps like me. Their french bread pizza is the http://bomb.com, along with their regular pizza, White Castle Burgers, popcorn and other small menu items.
HR: 4-8pm (and during all Houston sports team game times) w/dollar off drinks
Added info: They open early if there's a ballgame at Minute Maid. The last Friday of every month, the bar hosts an all-you-can-play game night ($15) with the adjacent Joystix arcade selling company. They do have a private lot that is catercorner to the bar, but you have to pay for parking during games.
If the walk from my place wasn't so sketchy, I think I would go to 1820 all the time.
I went there with a couple friends, and we sat in these really comfortable leather chairs and chatted. At one point we felt like the music was a bit loud, and the bartender turned it down for us.
Great looking place, comfortable seats, and they have Newcastle Brown Ale.
In other words, "a keeper".
I am at a crossroads. Part of me wants to give it a 2 because of my one experience here, while the other part thinks I should be friendly and dish out a 4 since I feel it has potential. My one experience here lasted about 6 minutes. We strolled in with a group of friends, straight into comedy open mic night. I wasn't entirely slayed, but maybe I'm a tough crowd. I liked the vibe a lot and would definitely go back. Wish I could say something about their selection/bartenders/prices, but we decided to peace out before I had the chance to order something.
I enjoyed this small bar. It has an awesome jukebox with lots of selection, people just need to stop choosing lady gaga over and over again...The staff is super friendly, quick, and attentive. The prices weren't too bad. There are nice chairs to lounge in. It's dimly lit but not too dark. Perfect place to chill. The fact that it is next to a vintage arcade alone makes it awesome.
I've totally neglected to review this awesome bar. It gets 3 stars just for being next to Joystix and another 2 for service and cleanliness. Nice and dimly lit, great jukebox and always a neat crowd.
I've often heard people use the word "chill-ax" ... this place is where anyone can do just that. It's unpretentious and the bartenders know what to serve ya even when you don't. I attended an Elite Event recently and was in the mood for something with cran, except vodka. That's exactly what I ordered and the bartender concocted a perfect mix of cran, apple rum, and splash of Sprite. Who'da ever thought it would be so yum? The jukebox is perfect for this place since it's so chill. Being able to pick your own tunes is fun. You essentially make the atmosphere whatever you want with that bad boy. I'd recommend this place for before an Astros' game since it's so close to Minute Maid Park. (Hey, who likes paying $6+ for beer? Exactly. Go to 1820 and stretch that buck!) One of the bartenders told me that they have a small crowd early in the night so if you plan to spend a late night downtown, this spot just might be it if you're looking for a lounge-type atmosphere to begin the night as well. If nothing else, stop by and have a drink and some popcorn or pizza, just to check out one of Houston's first strip club! If only the walls could talk ...
