The first time I got my custom board was in 1999...I fell in love with surfing after spending the summer in Hawaii and riding the gentle and long waves of the south shore! So I came back with the intent of getting my board. Luckily I had met Kalua at Long Beach State, a longtime surfer and a shaper of all things, surfboards. My first board was a stiff 10 footer boat..perfect for the long waves of the south shore and waves of Malibu. And not to mention easy on the paddling! I rode that board for almost 5 years when I decided it was time to go down a notch..I ordered another custom board from Kalua once again. This time I wanted my board to have more flexibility with different types of waves while having the ease of paddling. I ordered a 9.0 high performance board. And now I am ready for another one...maybe a 9'4 or 9'6...
Kalua is an amazing shaper who is willing to shape whatever board your heart desire. He will give you pointers on what he feels may be best for you in terms of what you want out of your board but he doesnt get in the way if you already have something in mind.
Check him out the next time you think of buying a board. He can shape a custom board far more superior than off the rack boards at the surfshops. I think you will really enjoy what he customizes for you!
Not only does Kalua make some of the best boards in town he's got the best style around too. His longboards are definitely all arounders -- good for any kinda trip you're on -- performance long boarders, & nose rider style guys & short boards. Kalua knows his stuff as both a shaper and surfer -- he's all that shaper surfer needs to be. I just got a 5'10" from him this past week & its the perfect addition to what I ride & a definite favorite of mine for HB / California style waves. If you ever get a chance order one of his boards, try it & you'll be hooked his shapes are cleannnnnnn.
