I went here for all my hair needs throughout my four years at Yale, and one of the big reasons I was so happy to get a job in New Haven was that I could still get my hair done at Egidio's!

Late-freshman year I asked around my older lady classmates for salon recommendations, and literally every single one said to go to Eliza at Egidio's. She is super friendly and communicative, and will do everything she can to get you the hairstyle you want--if you bring in a picture and say that's exactly what you want, she'll do it, or if you only have a vague idea of what you want, she'll work it out with you. For example, when I wanted to chop all my hair off, she gave me a perfect Mia Farrow pixie cut. Then, when I decided I wanted to grow it out, she helped me find cute, progressively-longer styles along the way.

Recently, Eliza went on maternity leave (don't worry, she's back now), so I got my hair cut by Dana. Dana was great, too! She not only tamed my hair but also helped teach me better ways to tame my hair every day. I will always recommend Egidio's, and now I'm glad to know that even if Eliza is all booked up (as she is right now), I can still get a great haircut.

    First hair cut: good.

    Second hair cut: great.

Third hair cut....bad. I showed the stylist a picture of my last haircut, and it was cut way too short. Disappointed but will try once more.

Egidio's is FABULOUS! Sleek and clean with a little funk. Tea, espresso, coffee, water and other tasty beverages are always available. Privacy is of the utmost importance here: there is a men's color room, a very tidy waxing room, as well as other handy hiding places.

I always go to see Roze Avery. She's not your typical prissy or high-fashioned hair stylist, but she is amazingly talented. I have seen her color work, and experienced her cuts and styling. She's phenomenal. She never gives the same cut twice and always asks what you are looking for before she takes out the scissors. I actually found her when she worked at Karma. My original stylist/cutter, Ben moved to another, far more expensive salon and I was devastated. Then Roze and I got to talking and she asked me to let her do my hair. And as much as I loved Ben, Roze is so much more versatile (she does more than just cuts). Now, If she ever moves away I will be absolutely devastated all over again- that's how much I love my every-eight-week cut!

    update...
I'm devastated... Roze moved away a few months ago...

I was absolutely determined to like Egidio's.  I've lived in New Haven for 4 years and have been lukewarm about all of the salons in the area, so I was really hoping to finally find a good local salon!  Plus, it's close to my workplace so it's super convenient.

Normally, I wait until I can visit NYC or DC to cut my hair-- which means I usually get a bit shaggy every 6 months or go.  Unfortunately, I should have just let my hair continue growing.

I had the first appointment on a Monday (9:15?) and my stylist was late by 15 minutes.  The place was cute enough though, and the owner was pleasant.  When I sat down in the stylist's chair to begin the cut, however, I noticed that there was still cut hair under other chairs-- at least two or three of them, and it was the first appointment of the morning! No other stylist was there.  I was pretty grossed out.

The haircut itself was fine--simple layering and bangs trimmed.  The stylist and I chatted a bit, and things seemed fine until I got back to my office and looked in the mirror a bit more closely.

Basically, what I saw was that there was a lot of HAIR still on my face from the bang trimmings.  The stylist never bothered to let me know, nor did she hand me anything to wipe with-- and since I took off my glasses for the entire cut, I didn't see that there was anything on my face.  Who lets their client walk out of the salon with bang-bits all over their face?  Ugh.

Looks like I'll be fleeing to DC again for my next haircut...

I have always had bad experiences going to get my hair cut.  Looking back I feel too many of these experiences had left me disappointed (the kind of disappointed where you look at yourself in the mirror and maybe let out a sob or two).

I was asking around for a salon in either NY or CT.  I got a recommendation from my lovely friend Emma to see Eliza in New Haven.  At the time I was living in East Rock and Egidio's was a quick trip down Orange st.

I booked an appointment with Eliza and haven't let anyone else touch my hair ever since.   I had a photo with me of what I wanted.  I feel Eliza was the first person to actually take into consideration a photo of hair I wanted.
She made some suggestions which I took and we started to cut.
Your first appointment with Eliza might be a little long, but its okay because you're going to get what you feel looks best on you.  She asks questions and actually listens to your answers.  Weird, I know.

Anytime I go in to see her I leave with a bounce in my step.

As far as the actual salon goes...
The prices are reasonable.  They offer their clients beverages from the espresso machine.  Its clean, its comfortable.  The other staff seems friendly.  I don't agree that it seems like a place for men.  Its not pink and frilly.  The walls are decorated with paintings and pictures.  It's a salon not a spa.

They don't put tips on credit cards so bring some cash!

Egidio's is a fine place, but there are two things to know before you book a first-time appointment: 1) It's not a particularly female-oriented establishment. Don't get me wrong: I am a no-nonsense woman when it comes to hair and beauty, and I despise frills and frou-frou. But this place just feels like a place for men: it's not very attractive, and it and lacks that, "ahh, I'm in a relaxing special zone now" vibe that good salons have. The little back room for waxing is bizarrely equipped with massive mirrors (!) and a television set. It feels like someone's basement. This brings me to my next observation: 2) The place is not that clean. It's not dirty. But it's not that clean.

Eliza seemed to be the only stylist there aside from the owner (the place felt kind of depressingly deserted compared to most other salons). She is friendly and personable; she did great color work on my hair, and a nice cut too. She has a generous policy about fixing anything a customer is unhappy about; it would have been nice if she had asked a few more questions about what I wanted at the outset, though.

Prices were low. That was good. But I don't think I'll go back. This is obviously a great salon for some people, but not a good match for me.

I hate to be that guy.  You know, the guy that hates the hair salon that everybody else is so fond of, but since reading these reviews is exactly what landed me with the 2nd worst haircut of my life (worst having been administered by my 4 year old sister when we were kids), I feel obliged to protest.

I went to Egidios with a simple request - a below chin length haircut with some layers.  Something that I could could straighten and shape into a flip or pull into a ponytail.  Seemed pretty straightforward.  I was delighted that my stylist asked if I wanted them to mail in the hair that was being cut off to locks of love, everyone seemed extremely nice, the place was clean, the reviews had been great, so I figured that I was in the clear.

She cut my hair quickly, snipped a bang at the exact height that would make it perpetually poke me in the eye (and assured me that I shouldn't worry about it when I protested), and blow dryed my hair into an interesting lopsided football shape usually reserved for people spoofing tv newscasters.  I tried to hide how upset I was (but I'm pretty sure she picked up on it), paid, and left and a daze. I caught a couple glimpses of my mauled head in store windows during the walk of shame back to my apartment, so I was upset by the time I walked into my front door.  Try as he might, my husband couldn't hide his surprise at what an, er, unusual shape the stylist had obtained.  He advised me to take a shower, style it like a normal person, and see how it felt then.  I did, which is when I discovered that the problem went deeper that I had thought.  In her hasty cutting, the stylist had left chunks of hair longer than the rest.  I don't mean that in a fun asymmetrical sort of way.  I mean CHUNKS of hair that were inches longer that the rest of the corresponding layer.  I was pissed, but no amount of money would have brought me back to that place, so my husband did some remediation. I had to invest in several headbands and hair clips to keep the mess all out of sight until it got long enough to pull back into a ponytail again, so the relatively low price of the haircut ($35) didn't amount to much of a discount.

I know that even good stylists have bad days, but I will not be returning to this establishment...or hanging on to any photographs of myself from that summer.

I have been all over New Haven in search of a decent haircut.  i've come to the conclusion that Egidio's is my favorite option.  Mainly due to the awesomeness of Eliza -a fantastic haircutter.  Every two months I show up looking like a poorly maintained chia-pet and she tames the mess and makes my hair look respectable again.  After getting my fair share of bowl cuts and 1950's military trims, I was losing hope in finding a good option in this city.   Desperate no more, I gladly endorse Egidio's.

I really like this place: it's not a snooty salon, just a comfortable, clean place with, as I write this, my favorite haircutter on staff: Eliza Lou. Whatever you want, she'll help you get there. She's got a great eye, skill, and is really willing to do what YOU want as long as it won't make your hair fall out or something horrible like that.
Egidio's gives tremendous value, is conveniently located, and, really, if you're looking for a new haircutter, give it a try.

Got a great brow wax from Chelsea, who was sweet, efficient, and did a nice job!  I was surprised to not have them waxed in the "tidy waxing room" I read about, but it was nonetheless a good experience. I didn't break out at all, and the redness on my fair skin actually went away quickly.  They were also extremely kind to loan me an umbrella when a storm broke out in the middle of a very sunny day!  Definitely will go back for another wax!!
