Beautiful stuff. This is the real deal in modern home furnishings; to visit Egbert's is to go on a walking tour of the History of Design.
Best of all, you won't be hovered over or judged. Feel free to wander into every corner, soaking up the simultaneously outdated and timeless styles.
I have gone by this place many, many times, and always vowed that one day, I would go in and check it out. I finally did, and it was such a disappointing experience. The things in the store were beautiful and creative and interesting and many of them were things I would put in my home. However, the staff and their lack of interest/enthusiasm in our presence made me feel unwelcome. I walked into the door with a colleague, and the man at the desk did not look up to acknowledge or welcome us, and in fact, never even said hello. There were two people working that day, and neither of them said a word to us. We loved looking at the beautiful and interesting things in the shop, but did not love being completely ignored, brushed off as people who weren't going to spend money and therefore not worth their time. We weren't there to spend money at the time, but maybe they could have changed that by, I don't know... being helpful or friendly or generally acknowledging our presence. I am into that kind of shop, but not when it is run by that kind of people, and I will go elsewhere to spend $37 on a maple syrup decanter.
If you want to sit on Hans Wegner Swivel Chair priced $14000 (yes 3zeros)....this is the place to go. And go around and around and around,,,,quietly. and smile... Of course, they have the beautiful-one of my favorite chairs of all time- Wishbone Chair, too. You can sit on that as well but you can find the chair at other places.
Needless to say,,, very good taste. Quality,,,is what you find in this store. Value,,,is not. Don't look for it.
I enjoyed trying each and every cutlery they have. I love to hold cutlery and check if they really fit in hands. And check the angle of the spoons.
If this sounds like something you like to do,,,I recommend you going to this place.
You can also find iittala glassware here.
Their collection of African crafts were wonderful, too.
Wooden masks from Nepal -noted hard to find- were there too if you are looking for them.
On the advice of the friend of my mom's, we stopped in here to look at furniture for our mid-century house. At first, I was a little intimidated by the steep prices but the sales people were super friendly and soon we had found a table on sale that we couldn't live without. They have a wonderful selection of modern furniture as well as more exotic pieces with a tribal flair. The jewelry is gorgeous and there are smaller items that would make great gifts. We had a problem with the table we bought, and they handled it promptly and efficiently and went above and beyond what I would expect from a retailer. There's a family feel about the shop and they couldn't have been nicer through the whole transaction. I can't wait to give them our business again! Best part is that they have three parking spaces just for their customers in the lot at 1st and Bell.
