The Eezy Freezy is AWESOME! It has the most random things you could ever want - seriously. In the mood for some baklava? How about some cheap wine? Maybe some organic wheat and sugar?
The Eezy Freezy is super tiny on the inside and often cluttered, but it magically contains everything I need.
FYI ... they take stealing pretty seriously. I was in there once when someone got caught stealing. They take a polaroid of the person and put them in a book. I was embarrassed for the person who stole!
Did I actually just pay $35 for kombucha, gum, raspberry syrup, a flax barlemons and some spinach?
Jesus Christ.
This place totally dissapointed me. After my jaunt to West Portal I was super stoked to head into Eezy Freezy for what I thought would be a health food experience. I was sorely mistkaen! I was confused at first as I saw GT Kombucha on one side I turned and saw Cheetos. I found gluten free flour though two aisles over found Tilex, and twinkies. Eclipse gum next to flax and coconut health bars?
I had higher hopes for this place. Perhaps too high. On my way out of the store I noticed a girl with a "health food" brown paper bag - had I missed the REAL health food experience in West Portal? Frustrated by my not so Ezzy NOR FREEzy moment I didn't dare chance stopping by another place just to spend more money on..well, lemons.
If I lived around the corner and desperately needed, oh I don't know Rice Dream or Cheez Whiz I guess I'd come by.
Thank God I stopped by Mollie Stones on Portola - that store is great!
Great location. Whever I need milk or a chocolate bar, it's just a couple blocks away
Eezy Freezy has a great selection of vegan options. A year ago, I requested that they carry soy yogurt and they've had it in stock ever since. They also have soy and rice milk, vegan soups, vegan pre-made sandwiches, vegan snacks and fresh produce. They are at a very convenient location, open late, and as a bonus, they have European magazines. The customer service is really nice. It's a great store.
Good for SFSU kiddos. Hahah. They have theo chocolates! :)
5 stars for the name.
5 stars for the owner.
After catching a movie, my boyfriend & I went shopping for some etc. grocery items that we forgot at our local Safeway. At 7 p.m. on a Saturday night, the Eezy Freezy was still open. I ventured into the wine section and noticed that they had a great selection of some dessert wines. My boyfriend picked one out & the owner complimented him on his choice. The owner then proceeded to take out a dessert wine from a hidden drawer, told the cashier girl to take out three plastic bowls, and allowed us to sample his $50 dessert wine that a customer had given him. He was so sweet.
Two weekends later, we went to Eezy Freezy, Again, I ventured into the wine section and noticed that they had a great selection of some dessert wines. My boyfriend picked one out & the owner complimented him on his choice. The owner then proceeded to take out a the same dessert wine (from the two weekends ago) from a hidden drawer, told the cashier girl to take out three plastic bowls, and allowed us to sample his $50 dessert wine that a customer had given him. He was so sweet.
The owner is very nice, and it's the deja vu service and the little miscellaneous items here that gives West Portal its charm.
Seriously this place only gets a 4 star for it's close location to SFSU and the convenience of finding alcohol when you can't go anywhere else (because everywhere else is closed....)
Anyway, over all most of the stuff is pretty pricey but you can find a lot of organic things here. AND the people who own the store are really nice so it's a cool place. I don't really go here anymore but it does bring back a lot of old memories.. oh, Eezy Freezy.
Having recently turned 21, I came here to get a six pack of Fat Tire Ale, which I had heard good things about. had 15 dollars on me and figured I'd spend around 10 on the beer and 5 on lunch.
I couldn't find price tags on any of the beer there so i brought it up to the counter. My jaw literally dropped when they told me it would be 15.45$. I assumed that I had just bought an expensive brand and told myself I'd never pay that much for a 6-pack again.
A couple days later I saw the very same beer and the very same 6-pack for under 10 dollars at a corner store that was less than a mile away. I will no longer be buying overpriced beer or anything else from this store.
I was banned from the store for handling the cheese too hard.
No stars!
Lousy vegetable produce, horrific customer service.
They sell Komboucha.
Eezy Freezy's a convenient grocery store for West Portalans. It's better stocked than St. Francis Market across the way. And aside from the usual corner store staples, they also carry specialty goods from Europe.
Four stars for their name, alone. Five, if they were named, Eezy Breezy.
Eezy Freezy proves that even with a ridiculously dated name, you can still be the coolest corner market in town.
This little store in West Portal allows you to live in European style - dropping by a local merchant every day to pick up this-and-that as you need it, knowing that they totally cater to your needs and tastes.
Sample purchases from any random day or night: Bavarian multi grain bread, Page non-fat Greek yogurt, Jeremiah's Organic coffee, Hello magazine/British version, organic Fuji apples, Breadshop Granola, Dagoba organic chocolate, Max Nutro Cat Food/Dog Food. They sell wine and liquor as well.
Talk about 1-stop shopping!
Please, for the love of all that is good and yogurty, pick up a Fage Greek yogurt with strawberry. It's the only place around that stocks this. Yes, TJ's carries the version with honey but the strawberry...ah, you'll just have to try it to see what I mean!
Shoo! Go to Eezy Freezy! Stop reading my profile. What? You don't like hot chocolate? We're going to have to take this outside.
So some things are pricey....but others are uber cheap! Today I stopped by desperate for red lentils, which neither of TWO Safeways I visited had in stock. Eezy Freezy had a giant 1.5 lb bag, and I was honestly shocked when it rang up for only $1.99. That's crazy talk!
Nice selection of veg foods, too, including an impressive array of frozen soy desserts.
I continue to go to Eezy Freezy for the occasional organic packaged food item or for a piece of fruit before I hop on the train at West Portal. I have been coming here since attending elementary school up the street and have fond memories of popsicles and after school treats.
Popsicles aren't the only ice-ridden entity in Eezy Freezy, though. Most of the people I have encountered working here are friendly, efficient and polite, however there are two girls who seem to work together quite often who have been chilly and rude on more than one occasion. I know it's cold in here (the air conditioner certainly helps this place this up to its name), but it wouldn't kill them to smile. I rang up a purchase of about 4.50 and was told I couldn't use the credit card machine due to a 5 dollar minimum. That was fine, but I asked if they still charged 50 cents for transactions under that amount and if I could pay that fee. I could have sworn they had had this last time and, even if I am remembering incorrectly, the snobby looks and snarky remarks of "Um...I don't know what you're talking about" was kind of unnecessary in a local corner store.
Still, I will continue to go here due to convenience and the fact that most of the employees are friendly.
Besides the name, the main reason I love Eezy Freezy is that they have a great wine selection and will help you pick out a bottle to your taste in your price range. Plus they are conveniently located to get goodies before catching a movie at the theater down the street.
The perfect neighborhood market. This is what many neighborhood groceries attempt to be and never quite make it. Everything from nice wine to cheap frozen dinners to soy half and half.
Recently made-over, so you'll probably hear neighborhood people bitching about how it used to be. Personally, I prefer the new incarnation.
I would come here alot more often if there was a wider cheese selection. Better yet, why don't you guys ease up with all that mozzarella and Havarti and get a decent blue and brie.
When the owner gives my son a banana each time we go there for a gallon of milk--which feels like every day--it makes me feel part of a community, part of a world where people still work to create a village-feel, a place of comfort for all who live or visit the place.
Eesy Freezy, while expensive for produce (there are plenty of wonderful produce spots on the Avenue), is the perfect neighborhood market. Veggies, good cheese, awesome frozen, hello-ice cream, and milk. And lots of it.
And while we are in there, Bazo, our sweet fluff of golden love, is getting dog-handled by every passer-by. It's always easy at Eezy Freezy. (Sorry. Had to.)
Cool people, Cool store.
aka International Newsstand to West of Twin Peaks. We are a literate neighborhood, check the U.S. Census. We like to stay informed. Looking for the newspaper "Irish Times" or "The Guardian"? You will find those publications here. New York Times, San Francisco Business Times are carried here. I never have time to peruse the glossy foreign fashion magazines. One day. Curious as to who owns Eezy? He is very nice and is always around. I don't buy food or liquor here anymore but I do see a great selection. Normal American snacks and booze but also Health Food items such as Kombucha Tea. Check 'em out.
I give this place 5 stars just for the simple fact that they had an issue of Q Magazine on their rack.
That totally made my day because never in my dreams would I think a little market in the city would carry a UK major music magazine.
I love you anyway even if you don't carry it anymore.
And yes, the name rocks along with the sign.
Eezy freezy (if you live nearby) is an "oh shit, i forgot something at the grocery store" kind of store. I'd have to take out a loan to do my actual shopping here. Yeah, it's organic, but organic can be found cheaper--at their prices you'd think it was grown by God using holy water.
Avoid on Friday & Saturday nights, unless you want to wait for 25 underage kids to flash their fake id's and load up on booze, giggling all the while.
I will always adore them for keeping the signage and the name. A great place to pick up something a little off the usual. Very nice counter help.
boyfriend's fav spot to grab a cranberry grapefruit Sobe Lean and a lime to flavor our vitamin V. my fav spot to find a godzilla-sized box of Waffle Crisp for $3.99. no, it wasn't stale or anything, it was just on sale, ok. my mum's fav spot to buy Japanese apple pears while waiting for stepdad or bro to pick her up from the station. this place with the cutest funkiest name has it all !
note: if you double park, make haste -- the cops do not have much patience in this neck of the woods.
I worked here for over a year. Al runs a store that tries to please everyone who walks through the door. If you want a product, ask to order it and someone will try to locate it. It's a small space and consistently understaffed-- causing things to often be spilling into the isles and products to sell out quickly. In the years since I've worked there, I feel the store has lost a lot of integrity. When you're open that many hours, it's just impossible to get everything done. It'd be more efficient to offer fewer things displayed (and priced) better than to try to jam everything in.
My cute little neighborhood market. I love that you are open until 11pm. Your wine/champagne selection is great, and very resonable. & you actually have organic products. You're also willing to take requests. You rock! Keep it up! :)
The place is looking much better since the renovation. It isn't the cheapest or the most well stocked. But for a corner store, it's pretty good. No more lottery tickets though. Now you have to go across the street to the other store for those. Good place to get snacks before going to the movies so you don't have to pay those ridiculously high theater prices.
Where can you go to buy a large stinkin' bottle of Jack. organic pear juice, and packaged Indian food all at the same time? Eezy Freezy, that's where! All spruced up, this place makes for the perfect neighborhood market. A wall of booze to choose from, organic eats, newspapers from Europe? Does it get any better?
Deserves top marks for the name alone. For years this place would have been more aptly named Sleazy Freezy, but new ownership and great selections over and above your typical corner store have made Eezy Freezy my frequent preferred alternative to the increasingly bland and homogenized Molly Stones, which sits on the site of the once grand Tower Market.
If you need it, Freezy's got it. The sheer convenience of being able to walk out with 90% of the groceries you need, but forgot at Safeway is delightful. It's right off of muni, so stop by for some wine and 3 times as many options of Amy's Kitchen food as any big-box store around.
Convenient neighborhood spot to grab paper, milk, ice cream and candy.
I love Eezy Freezy. Cheap candy. Great location. Whever I need milk or a chocolate bar, it's just a couple blocks away.
I love the Freezy! Al is a stand up dude who knows his wines! My favorite part of the Freezy though is the magazine collection. I've never seen a convenience store with a more eclectic selection of euro mags! I used to go down there just to get the latest issue of a motorcycle magazine that I couldn't find anywhere else in the city! Also, who lets you keep accounts anymore?! It's so nice when you're in a hurry to run in and grab a bottle of wine and say, "put it on my account" and walk out! Well done Al!
Oh how I forget all the good times, before they cleaned this place up. They never card, they are open late, they have a little bit of everything, although part of me misses the old layout (i.e. the labyrinth). Always comes to mind on Wednesdays, when I forgot my ticket and it's up to 40 million. I'm hopeless.
It's a bit pricey - which is to be expected. What I don't like is the lack of friendliness - no one is ever happy in that place. I have been in the store on two occasions when the owner/boss is yelling at an employee in front of the patrons. That sort of behavior doesn't really charm me much. Yes, they have a fair selection when you're in a pinch, but I much prefer St. Francis Market across the street.
I looooove Eezy Freezy and so does the little girl I nanny. We go there every day on our way to the playground and she sometimes seems to have more fun playing with the staff in Eezy Freezy than she does playing with the children up in the playground. They almost ALWAYS have what we need and the owner who seems to always be there in the afternoon genuinely takes pride in his business and is courteous and happy to see his customers. They have everything you could find in a commercial grocery store and more, but you're still supporting a small locally owned business.
What a great "corner market!" Great selection of organic products for a simple store, plus a decent selection of produce. Owner takes customer feedback seriously and has done a nice job fixing up the place! Way to go!
