Wow, this place was great.  As proof, when my significant other and I were leaving the restaurant, I asked her, as someone who does not get nearly as excited about restaurants as I do,  "4 stars or 5?"  Her response was immediate and emphatic: "5 stars!"  At first, I was surprised by her unusually strong reaction to a restaurant, but then I realized that, even though I tend to be stingy about handing out 5 stars, this place undoubtedly deserved the honor.

First, calling this place a Mexican restaurant is not entirely accurate.  Even though, in many ways, it is the most authentic Mexican restaurant I have ever had the pleasure to visit, it is not the type of stereotypical Mexican restaurant we see in this country.  Rather, it is a collection of delicious, refined dishes with strong Mexican and Spanish influences.  In other words, this is the restaurant Canyon wishes it could be.

The decor and ambiance are absolutely charming.  The service was superb.  In fact, superb does not do the service justice.  The servers exceeded superb service and actually showed a passionate pride in the amazing food served and sincere pleasure in the joy experienced by the diners.

To top it off, the food was as delicious as advertised.  My meal consisted of an assortment of goodies, including carne asada and a cheese enchilada.  My beautiful companion had a black bean soup which was so delicious that I view the fact that she allowed me to taste it as proof of her love for me.  We then finished with a dessert that was a combination of coconut flan and sponge cake.  The waiter had recommended this dessert, and yet again, he was right on the money.

There are some meals that create a sense of joy and a deep satisfaction when you leave in the knowledge that you will be remembering the wonderful meal for a long, long time.  This meal was definitely one of them.  Well done, Eduardo De San Angel.

Wow, was this meal good! Very weird location to be set back in a strip mall, but who cares when the food is this good. Good wine selection and great appetizers, definitely need to get the cactus plate--delicious. They also bring you great bread before dinner, easily the best pre-dinner bread I've had, one of them was this corn bread with jalapeños--yum...

...And things kept getting better...the main courses were delicious, definitely not what I'd call typical Mexican food--much better--seemed like a "high-end" version. Some more experimental plates along with your typical favorites (i.e. Carne asada). My friend that ordered the Carne Asada called it the best he's ever had, this is coming from a guy that spent a few years of his life living in Central America and eating this type of food day-in and day-out.

Be ready to drop a decent chunk of change at this place if you want to experience the true greatness of all the food, but it's well worth it. Certainly one of the great hidden gems of Ft. Lauderdale.

I would give this 4 1/2 stars.  The only reason it is not getting 5 from me was the desert.  Everything else was just about perfect.  Excellent service, unique, well prepared dishes, and the flavors were exploding.  We had a special tuna app, it was sushi grade seared tuna in a flour wrap with so many flavors that blended beautifully.  The tuna by itself however did not taste all that great.  I had a yellowtail fillet encrusted in almonds and it was excellent.  Their black bean puree is excellent, I just wish they would have advised that they sprinkle cheese on the side dishes, cause I don't eat it and had to scrape it off :(
We ordered the bread pudding for desert.  I usually love this dish b/c of the caramel sauce.  Their sauce was a very heavy rum flavor that drowned out the caramel...it was not even edible.  We had two margaritas, they were good, not great as I had heard.  I would go back and be more specific about my dietary restrictions, likes and dislikes.  I think they would likely be accommodating.  I say for sure to give it a try.  If you want to save a few bucks, go to http://www.restaurant.com and get yourself one of the coupons/gift certificates.

Caveat - this was the first restaurant at which I ate some years ago which sported a menu heavily influenced by seasonal and local ingredients.  It's also the first Mexican restaurant that showed me there was more than sour cream or cheese to Mexican food.  Think of this place as gourmet Mexican - Mexican ingredients used in a non-cliche Mexican way.

Eduardo De San Angel will always hold a special spot for those reasons.  The food here is original by Miami standards.  Food flavors are clean and shine through on the plate.  The menu is updated often so I will not go into details about specific dishes, but expect to have at least one flavor catch you by surprise any time you eat there.  He also has some items I've seen more of recently, but which he served before they were popular, like cactus paddle.  Nothing is superfluous on the plate, and it all tastes good.

The place itself is a cozy spot in a dark strip mall on commercial boulevard with bizzare 25 cent an hour meters outside.  Service is professional and friendly and desserts are solid.

Eduardo De San Angel is about as close to restaurant perfection as you can get. The place is sophisticated but not pretentious. It's comfortable but not too casual. The servers are attentive but not overwhelming. And the food is inventive but not cliche.

This place is an unassuming little restaurant on the South Side of Commercial Boulevard, just East of US1. Upon entering, I instantly noticed the dim, romantic lighting and the casual but sophisticated atmosphere that has clearly been created to make the customer feel right at home. I happened to dine here later in the evening, so the dining room was virtually empty. My guess is this was more a product of the time and not a reflection on the quality of the restaurant. I get the feeling that it is a very rare occasion to have anyone walk out of this place unhappy.

Our server was, without a doubt, the best that I have ever had. He really made my date and me feel like he was there to serve us, and he seemed genuinely excited about describing the evening's specials and recommending the menu items that he thought we would like most. The food at Eduardo De San Angel is what they refer to as Mexican Fusion. As reviewers before me have already mentioned, you won't find tacos and burritos on this menu, so you'll have to coax your Taco Bell-trained palate to appreciate the Mexican flavor profile as applied to different food items. One particularly interesting item that was being featured was an ahi tuna "sushi" roll created from a flour tortilla, a creamy chipotle sauce, and fresh ahi tuni. Many of the menu items are similarly inventive, marrying traditional Mexican flavors with both contemporary and classic international dishes.

My date and I began our meal with a bottle of Verdejo wine that ended up pairing fabulously with all of the food that we tasted. We each started with a soup: I enjoyed a potato and leek soup with pieces of Manchego cheese that was total bliss, and my date's black bean soup was pure perfection in both taste and texture. The soups were served in enormous bowls that were reminiscent of the spacecraft that brought alien Mork to earth on the old, but not forgotten, show Mork & Mindy. Between the monstrous bowl of soup and the delictable jalapeno corn muffins that are served before the meal, I was feeling a bit of fulness creep in. But the second our entrees arrived, my stomach graciously gave way, and I allowed myself to delve further into culinary ecstasy.

For my main course, I ordered the homemade raviolis stuffed with black beans and cheese and topped with a smoky  chipotle and walnut cream sauce. I don't have words to describe the dish, so suffice it to say that I remained completely silent from first bite to last, unable to pull myself away from the fiesta that was taking place in my mouth. Pure perfection, I tell you! My date's carne asada dish was aesthetically amazing, and he too was completely satisfied with every element of the dish.

All in all, this is a dining experience that is second to none. Everything, from the ambiance to the service to the mouthwatering fare is so impressive that I continually find myself wondering when I will once again get to dine here. I would recommend Eduardo De San Angel for anyone who is ready to spend a little extra for a quality meal in a quality setting. If there were 10 stars available, I would give this place all 10!

My Husband and I dined here on a Friday night. We were some of the first guests of the night. We were seated in a quiet, romantic corner after being greeted by a very friendly bartender and host. We soon met our server, Todd. Todd's service was exceptional throught the night--always friendly, helpful, flexible, and never intrusive. Whenever we needed something, it was on our table within 2 mins.

After being given ample time to settle in, order drinks and relax a little, we ordered our food. We were then served fresh white rolls and corn muffins with jalepeno and cilantro. They were delicious! Our food arrived in 10 minutes flat.

I ordered the ancho chile flavored crepe with cuitlacoche (basically corn fungus), serrano chiles, onion and a squash blossom sauce. To be honest, someone told me that cuitlacoche was a mushroom, so I expected it to taste like a normal mushroom. It didn't. I think that Cuitlacoche is an aquired taste. I found the crepe to be interesting, but a LITTLE bland, and strange. I blame this on my uneducated palate, not the restaurant. My Husband ordered the homemade ravioli with black beans, fresh cheese, and a chipotle walnut sauce. FABULOUS!! We ended up trading dinners halfway through our meal. I would highly recommend you try the dish he had. The taste fusion of the salty cheeses and sweet walnut sauce was amazing.

For dessert, do yourself a favor and try the 3 layer chocolate cake. It's a creamy type cake made on site of fine quality chocolate that absolutely melts in your mouth.

With the http://restaurant.com coupon we used, i think we spent around $65 for our two dinners, one dessert, and two $6 jasmine iced teas.

There were only a couple of negatives about the night. First of all, the A/C seemed to be on full blast--it literally sounded like an airplane starting up. We were absolutely freezing for most of the night. You may want to bring a coat, or be prepared to tell them to turn the air warmer. Also, I think they may need to pay attention to detail as far as the decor goes. Most of the pictures on the wall looked a bit chintzy and were completely crooked. I think that if you sell dinners for $25 and up, the decor needs to match the higher-class appearance you are shooting for. Don't get me wrong--the lighting was perfectly romantic, the music was ambient, and it was very cozy. But I don't think romantic lighting can cover up the fact that the pictures on the wall are cheap.

Now that that's out of the way, we thoroughly enjoyed our romantic night together. The cuisine is not your average Mexican food, so don't expect heavy cheese and beans on everything. They have transformed traditional Mexican food into something really special, and unique. We think you will enjoy your evening here as well.

This, for me, is my favorite restaurant in South Florida.  Truthfully, it's my favorite restaurant anywhere I've ever been.  The food is infused with a Mexican flavor, but is far from traditional.  My favorite dish is a filet mignon stuffed with roasted poblano peppers and a couple of kinds of cheeses, drizzled with a tasty, but mild, chipotle sauce.  I've had a lot of the things on their menu (The sashimi with the chipotle vinaigrette) is amazing, the and lamb and venison have both been full of flavor and lacking any sort of gamey taste.

Most importantly, this is the friendliest service you'll get down here. The waiter's are all very knowledgeable about the food and the wine.  If you're not sure what to get, just go ahead and trust them.

Oh, and how could I forget the free jalapeno corn bread?  Mmmm.

I'm a big fan all around. This is a Mexican influenced restaurant. Now, just because you see the word Mexican dont' think you're going to find any tacos, enchiladas, or chips and salsa around. This is Mexican fine dining. It was classy without being pretentious. I felt perfectly comfortable in my capris and flip flops - something I would never be allowed to do in a classy Boston restaurant.  The service was the best I've ever had. A waiter that wasn't even waiting on us was stopping by the table to ask how we enjoyed the meal. I got the carne asada...it was delicious as was my friend's beef tenderloin dinner.   Beer and wine only

This is simply one of the best restaurants in all of South Florida.  It's a must-try for any person who enjoys a quality meal.

This fine-dining establishment is not quite Mexican, but is actually a member of the ever-growing market of international "fusion" restaurants.

Don't let this dissuade you.  Go, be prepared for difficult choices (maybe go with friends and share) get one of their blue agave wine-based margaritas, and save room for dessert!
