Ed's has a lot of competition on the Causeway and in the area in general. The food is good most of the time, the service is decent, however, I find them too expensive - there's R&R up the road and there are hole-in-the-wall restaurants around Mobile and in Mississippi where you can get same good food and a much better deal. If you are on a budget, my advice is - skip Ed's.
What I do like about Ed's is their deck - you can seat out there in the heat of the summer and in February as well - there's plenty of sun and a breeze and the staff is accommodating most of the time - if you want to seat outside they'll do their best to get you there. Just don't feed the birds (they become a real nuisance) or the alligator. Sitting inside can be uncomfortable especially when the place is full -- the acoustics is terrible, you can barely hear the person sitting next to you.
The food.... besides being overpriced... the coleslaw is very good and there are unlimited refills, the seafood platter is good when it comes to quality but poor when it comes to quantity for the $, poboys are good, and that iceberg lettuce with some old pitiful tomato wedges on top and some seafood is ... I won't order it again.
All in all, I think this economy has made me and my friends to reconsider Ed's -- once one of our favorite places, we don't go there as often as we used to - the food and atmosphere are not bad but they are not good enough for us to be willing to pay for it.
I have to agree with Amme: the fried crab claws are a strongpoint here. I ordered the grilled gulf shrimp salad thinking it would be a lighter option to the fried shrimp one, after a long day of gorging on fried southern foods. WRONG. The grilled shrimp was more of a sautee, with a delectable but oily-rich finish and some very satisfying heavy cajun seasoning. Who's complaining? The fresh tomato wedges and crisp iceberg balanced out the fat (at least that's what I tell myself) and the balsamic dressing wasn't half bad either, though also oily. Balsamic dressing is hard to find anywhere in Lower Alabama, so that was a real treat.
The hushpuppies were nicely seasoned but somewhat too hard for my tastes. I prefer them crunchy outside and steamy-soft inside, but these were hard and dense nearly all the way through. The gumbo was good, not spectacular, but good, and the red beans and rice were VERY good, perfectly spiced. I love the generous helpings of cole slaw they serve as soon as you are seated, along with a plate of toasted-hot saltines, the toasting a very nice touch.
Our local friends tell us this is one of the best seafood options on the Causeway these days. We liked it, and would definitely come back. Despite a full-to-bursting parking lot, we were seated almost right away and service was prompt and courteous, with frequent refills on our soft drinks and lemonade. They even have a cute gift shop with these interesting stuffed crawfish hand puppets which I am kicking myself for not bringing home to California as souvenirs.
This one of the places on my fried crab claw eating tour! Sooooooo yummmmy!
