199 reviews for Edo Salon
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
I've been going to Becky H. for about 2 years now. Every time I look at photos I am amazed by how great and cute my hair looks. This is not because of my styling prowess, this is due to her great cuts. Her cuts are great because she is an artist, and also because she has the ability to listen to me and understand how much work I am willing to do/how crazy/conservative I am willing to go. She also doesn't talk too much which means she won't leave your color in too long or chop off too much hair. Her cuts also grow out really, really well.
Also, if you have super curly hair (I don't), she is the person to go to (she has super fine curly hair which ALWAYS looks great).

I was told by a friend to go here and get my bangs done by Justin.
He was so quick and friendly!! Plus for a 10 minute bang cut and only $15....who could complain??
Small and cute salon as well in a great lower Haight location.
I will return. no doubt!
Oh, oh wow.
My husband and I came in today and both got haircuts with Justin, and it was an _instant_ win.
I've been looking for someone who understands what to do with my hair for quite some time now, and I have to say this is the first haircut I've gotten since I've moved to the city [how long has it been . . . 3+ years?] where I really did walk out feeling 100% awesome about the cut. I walked in today feeling really unsure about what to do with my flat, lifeless blahness sitting on my head except that I wanted bangs and texture and to keep most of my length. What I got was pretty much the cutest haircut I've ever had. Ever.
The boy came out looking amazing, too, which of course makes me extremely happy, but I have to admit I kindof had to flaunt the extreme awesomeness of my cut at him just a wee bit. :)
Soooo . . . yeah! Justin = good for the boys and the girls, which basically makes him our MVP hairstylist, now. And of course, it doesn't hurt that he's pretty much the nicest guy ever--it's really refreshing to chat with someone who makes you laugh while he's cutting your hair!

I started going to Edo Salon because tis down the street from my house. I went to Becky because she was new in town from Colorado and I needed a break from your average SF stylist. I hadn't found someone I liked yet and I really like going to the same person for awhile. I like them to get to know me and my hair.
I always leave looking amazing when i go to Becky. I cheated on her in June because she was out of town and I needed a Pride haircut and my hair got butchered in a salon that will not be named. it wasn't until then that I realized just how frickin amazing Becky is. Im kind of in love. I can't afford haircuts very often but I can live with a Becky haircut for about 3 months.
But I guess I shouldn't post this positive review because its getting more and more difficult to get an appointment. I haven't been to anyone else there but I presume they are all fabulous.
I've been getting my hair done at Edo for almost two years. I went to Roxy & when she moved to New York, started seeing Jessica. Both ladies are extremely talented! I have thick, often unruly hair and am very particular about my haircuts. It's easy for it to look fantastic in the chair when a professional stylist has had their way with it, but I want something that still looks good after I wash and style it a few days later. I have never been anything but extremely satisifed with Edo's work product. Their stylists have a great eye...
If I were wearing a gumball sweatshirt right now, I'd be the spitting image of my fifth grade school picture, a look I never wanted to sport again.
I've been going here forever and have recommended them to several friends. I've always gotten slightly edgy, quality cuts that are versatile and grow out well -- the cloud 9 kind that garner compliments from strangers.
For the past several months, though, they just haven't delivered. I get very regular, bubble head hair that is completely underwhelming. Since I've always gotten such great cuts in the past, I don't understand the change! I've been straightforward, I do not have complicated hair, and I've given this multiple shots.
On top of that, the customer service that is usually curt but polite has been downright incompetent. Most of my last few appointments have been changed on some level -- some with prior notice and some without. Fine, these things happen, but god forbid you should make the same mistake and cancel -- they'll charge your credit card! I understand the policy, but not if you're going to be flakier than I am.
So, after four years, it's back to the drawing board for me and my newly dorky hair.
Edo is a lovely salon with great style and energy. Chri, one of the owners, is mad talented and she gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had. I highly recommend Edo.
I am so glad to be back in SF and in my old hood the Lower Haight. I am looking for a place to get my hair did lol. I walked in and Kirsten was at reception. She said hello and let me introduce myself and answered all my questions preofessionally and with her own savoir fare. I will be booking an appt, the rates apparently vary depending on whether the stlyist is an Associate or Senior lever from $45-60 approx. Edo is on a great corner and gets lots of natural light and the space also has artwork and product. Oh and Kirsten's 1960's era red dress was a knockout as well...I look forward to making an appt.
Have been going to this place for about two years. I have had some winning haircuts and some that I am not too happy about, just because we're all fussy about our hair, and what we have time to do with our hair in the morning.
I have been seeing Jessica for two years, and she's great. I remember when I go in, that I need to be SUPER SPECIFIC about what I want, and what I don't want. As long as you're super specific, the cut will turn out great.
I have big, giant, thick curly jew hair - which can be awesome and can be a pain in the ass as well. I like it to be thinned out, not too layered and not too edgy... just somewhere down the middle, and Jessica is awesome when you tell her exactly what kind of cut you want, and what kind of 'thing' you want your hair to do.
if you go in with no expecations, they might get a little 'too' edgy for you, but thats the nature of the place. its colorful creative and hip... its got an edge, so just make sure you know what you want and be prepared to drop some jacksons in there.
my new haircut is super cute if i don't say so myself:)

Hair. Why have you become the f'n bane of my existence?

Got a great haircut from Jayne, one of the owners, several months ago. She listens, she gets it. She's a natural.
I was also interested in learning more about the cosmetology world and considering retraining and somehow becoming involved in this line of work.....
Jayne actually went out for lunch with me and allowed me to interview her about the ins and outs of her biz! What an awesome lady!
Partly due to her encouragement I'm now about 400 hours into fulfilling my 1600 hours in cosmetology school!!
Try Edo out - sometimes they even run 2-for-1 haircut deals during these tough economic times and you can also offer to be a color model and have color done for $20.
I'm not really sure I understand why Edo has such great reviews on yelp. Don't get me wrong, its a fine salon, cute, kinda edgy, crappy art on the walls, etc, but there is NOTHING outstanding about it. I didn't even get offered water or a drink and for $80 I kinda expect a glass water, especially after I hauled ass to get there from work. (At Cinta, Grasshopper, Bella Union, and Vertical Clearance, I get offered champagne, wine, coffee or at least some water). Also, Edo takes a credit card number and charge you 1/2 the price of a haircut if you cancel within 24 hrs - tacky. i went to Becky, who I had heard great things about, and I got a decent haircut. But not worth $80. Its almost as if these stylists are all trained by the same place/person, and I get the same generic razor cut layers every single time. Seriously. I've watched this haircut so many freakin times I'm pretty sure I could do it to myself. I got nervous watching her load up a new blade but figured maybe I should just let the professional do her job. I wanted something a little different than plain ol' razor layers and I do fault myself for not being more specific but still.... Actually at this point, after living here 3 years and not being able to find anyone in the B&B/Kerastase world that I like, maybe im just too high maintenance...
That said, Becky is really sweet and I can tell she tried to listen. Somehow there was no WOW moment though.
My boyfriend, a solid Edo loyalist, has been raving to me about their stylists, the service, the free samples of Bumble & Bumble and so on for years. After visiting the place myself, I've come to believe he's just had one too many of the free dixie cups of wine they serve you while waiting for Becky or Brendan or x-other hip, young 20 something "senior" stylist to finish with their latest edgy creation. And while my stylist was in truth quite nice and better at feigning interest in conversation than even the diviest dive bartender, I couldn't help but notice how little was done to my head when my stylist announced "viola" 20 minutes after I sat down in the chair. Or how disappointed I was when my hair looked EXACTLY THE SAME the following day as it did before I set foot in the salon.
Apparently, Edo is a great choice if you are looking for a life-changing hair cut. But if you just need just a modest cut, i.e. want your hair put into some kind of shape while you do the normal things you do from year to year in your normal, unhip life, then this may not be the place for you. In the end I was charged $50 for basically a trim that I could have received anywhere else for maybe a third of the cost (or, dare I say it, for free from my next door neighbor). Not only this, but I was actually told I was receiving a discount (apparently they normally charge $60-$80 for this kind of thing). The stylist seemed to feel a little guilty about this and squeezed some free samples of leave-in condition into my hand before I left (oh boy!)
Walking away from it all with my bland $50 haircut (which has not once merited the usual, "There's something different about you.. Did you get a hair cut?" from friends) I really feel it is a shame Edo ISN'T a dive bar. The stylists are great conversationalists and the environment, from the indy art lining the walls, to the mint green vintage-look couches, is brimming with friendliness. And yes, you are given wine and the hand-made jellyfish lamps gazing down at you while your hair stylist's tattooed hands massage your scalp are fascinating, but in the end I can't say this merits the whopping cost Edo charges for its services.
To boot, Edo seems a little confused about their salon policies. Their website states they do perms but they actually don't have anyone in house that does them. They also are very busy (because being hip takes a lot of time) and require 24 hour notice for cancellations. Understandable, surely, were it not for the confusion of their late cancellation fee- 50% of the hair cut you never received (a truly dubious amount as all hair cuts are on a sliding scale). And as others have stated you are not allowed to leave a tip on your credit card and are instead asked to place any number of crumpled bills in a small card-size envelope which will later be secretively passed on to your stylist or more likely opened right in front of you. Which is fine, except when you don't have cash and end up feeling like a cheapskate shmuck for not being able to leave a tip.
Still, I can't honestly say Edo is not a good place. They are good at what they do, which is make hip, fresh heads look even hipper and fresher for more money than most of us make in a day (recession: eat your heart out). And although this wasn't my kind of thing, particularly, maybe your head is seeking drastic changes, your ego in need of some soothing conversation, and your wallet in desperate need of some emptying. In which case, you will find a good friend in Edo Salon.
Bad Hair...is a BIG don't...there just isn't any way to cover it up. You can try all you want...you can even try to rock some rainbow leg warmers so that people are looking down at your feet and not up at your head...
It's just not worth all the scary looks and lack of social invites...
go get your hair cut at Edo and they will for sure help you rock your look.
The prices are pretty much just like any other trendy place (you're looking at 60-75 depending on who you get)...but unlike a $12 cut from China Town - your hair cut from Edo won't make you cry into your pillow the night after.
Promises promises - but truly - the best place to get a cute cut....I've never been dissociative and I've gotten my hair cut by 4 different people there. You just can't go wrong.
Another note for the curly crew...
I had hoped to make an appointment with Becky, after reading the ridiculously good reviews. She was out of town, however. I got hooked up with Chri (one of the owners), and was not disappointed. She clearly has a lot of experience, listens well, and gave me some cute shoulder-length layers. The cut hangs extremely well and doesn't require too much maintenance.
Additional star for making everything look great without using 18 different products (a common salon experience). Just a little bit of bumble & bumble yielded smooth frizzless curls.
I honestly really feel bad writing this review. If I were rating the stylists on their friendliness and enjoyability while spending 2 hours in their chair it would be 4 stars no problem. Its also rather visually interesting. I was there with some sort of dead bird art that made the time pass a little less painfully.
Unfortunately I suffered three of the four worst hair cuts of my life in this bitch. I won't name any names, but the first dude that went at my head with the snips was given a little artistic freedom, but was clearly informed:
- No mullets
- No mushroom hair
- No bowl cuts
- No circa 1990s Rachel Green hair cuts
- No circa early 200 Rachel Ray hair cuts
- Nothing ugly
Unfortunately the guy decided to give me shapeless, shoulder length, poorly shaped frizz that vagely resmbled something my mom rocked 15 years ago. No lie. It was so ugly i couldn't do what I just normally do when I'm unhappy a service I am paying too much for, which is just politely thank the person, run out of the store, and start cursing and crying. No I actually asked the guy to modify the haircut a little bit, remove the volume, and give me some basic sleek layers.
I was willing to settle for the ubiquitous long side swept bangs and layered hair that I was trying to move away from.
But no, haircut number two got even worse. He decided not to get my hair wet. Never mind my hair is naturally straightish to slightly wavy and the dude just took a diffuser to it rendering it a curly, gnarled mess that looked like rodents would be clammoring over themselves to nest in it. He sprayed the hair wad half heartedly with a squirt bottle and then started dry cutting the curls at random. I almost shat myself in the seat.
My broke ass has suffered through enough Supercuts expirences to know thick hair should not be undercut unless you want to look like you head is swelling from within.
He also did nothing to shape my bangs which had been the straight across kind and I just let them grow out for a good 6 months till they were long enough to fake the side sweep with. Nice.
After drunkenly chopping at my head for another 30 minutes he let me know he had another customer waiting, and my time was pretty much up. So I end up tipping the guy pretty big anyways, I was hoping good karma would magic my hair back to pretty in the middle of the night.
Unfortunately my hair was a fucking mess. It was completely uneven, it was bulky, it was too short, and a very sick combination of a mushroom cut and a mullet. Shudder.
When I got home I look at it and had the kind of empty and morbid feeling when you're too sad to drink. It was an ultimate low.
I decided to wait to the next day, wash it, and see if it was at all salvagable. Nothin doin.
I hate crying over something as trivial and replacable as hair, but seeing something so ugly so close to my face was too much. I cried for a good hour and called the salon back, hoping they would take mercy on me and fix it.
I went back and saw this one chick who was nice too. She tried to fix my hair and did marginally better. But she insisted on undercutting, adding volume, and not evening out any of the mess. Which was the opposite of what I asked her to do. After a little while she let me know that they were having a staff meeting and my time was up.
WTF!? No, my time is not up. I got kicked out with a shitty fucking hair cut last time and you're going to do it to me again? I am paying enough and tipping enough that I should get the haircut i asked for. Or at least something close would be nice.
So of course I leave a nice tip, say thank you, walk out and start crying right there on fucking Haight street. Real classy right?
So I tried to wait it out. Tried numerous products, straightening irons, brushes, whatever I though I could put on my hair to take the ugly out. Nothing has worked though. Its been a few months and I swear it just gets uglier and uglier.
I want to get a cut to fix it but I've been too traumatized. I'll just have to revert back to my old routine of waiting another 6 months for it to grow to an unacceptable length and condition ask for the nice person to just even out the ends and call it a day.
Sorry Edo, you're nice and pretty but I just don't think this is going to work.
Only two stars for the following:
1. They ask for a credit card to make an appointment? (This is not French Laundry) I thought it was a bit excessive.
2. They do not allow you to add gratuity on you credit card and don't tell you when you make your appointment.
3. Stylist was late
4. Stylist did not cut my hair after drying it like most other places
5. Very quick blow dry which still left my hair damp. Didn't flat iron my hair
6. It's far too expensive for what it is ($70). For an extra $25 I could have gone to a really nice salon and left looking great.
I left looking cute and when I got home my hair was frizzy and all over the place.
So I finally found the time to go back to Edo for a new haircut. Jayne, the owner, cut my hair, and I really don't know if I can express how freaking happy I am with it. You see, I've had this certain image of what I want my hair to look like in my head for about a year now and no one could get it right, even with pictures! I was beginning to think it was hopeless. But no, she did such a great job. Usually a haircut takes a day or two to grow on me but I walked out of there with a gigantic smile on my face, knowing immediately that I loved it.
Jayne is also extremely sweet! I truly enjoyed getting my hair cut by her.
Funny how this place went from 1 star to 5 for me! I can't imagine getting my haircut anywhere else from now on!

I've been going to see Jane for about 8 years now, after hearing about her great cuts from a boyfriend. He's long gone but my devotion to Jane remains. I love Edo, the hip stylists buzz around the salon working their magic on clients and they have such great range. You'll see every style executed with perfection there, from the most up to the minute only-a-very- seriously-hip-20-something-can-pull-this-off to more conservative cuts and everything in between.
I get bored easily yet don't ever want a drastic style change and the thing I always love best about my cuts is that they're always slightly different from the last one. Jane always adds something new yet maintains my general style. I love her creativity that way, I always feel like I have something fun to play with when I leave there.
The atmosphere is great too, there's always a lot of energy and great art. I've been to some super snobby salons where the stylists seem annoyed to see you, Edo is not one of those places, everyone is always welcoming and happy to see me when I arrive. I never feel rushed, Jane always takes time to talk about what I want and brainstorm about what she thinks would look good.
Jane and the staff make every effort to accommodate each client. I had a mix up there a while ago, they were training a new receptionist who forgot to put my appointment on the calendar. I showed up, long overdue for a hair cut and meeting friends I wanted to look good for afterward. Receptionist says, "We don't have you down and Jane doesn't have any openings tonight". I was not pleased, Jane was in the middle of cutting another client's hair but saw what was happening and came right over. Somehow she managed to move some people around on her schedule and fit me in! I also left with a coupon for my next visit as a thank you for being patient. I left looking like a million bucks and happy to go meet friends I hadn't seen in a while with a killer new cut.
A great salon in a fun neighborhood.
I went to Edo this morning for the first time and loved the whole experience. I had heard through a friend that they just started using the new Brazilian Keratin Treatment straightening product and Sarah did an amazing job. I was ready to move away from my standard once yearly harsh chemical relaxer immediately after reading about the Keratin Treatment and it's affects of straightening without damaging your hair. I'm sold!
The salon in general was super friendly, hospitable and also 3 blocks from my house which is an added bonus!
Highly recommended!
Nick St. Mary is naturally gifted. I've been looking for someone all my adult life who understands my hair texture, but wouldn't leave me sitting in the salon for 3 hours or make me look like church at the end of the day.
He's been cutting my hair for a year and a half now and we've gone from very basic trims (which still look great) to more adventurous ideas like my latest graduated bob, the coolest haircut I've ever had!
I am also surprised to love b&b products. Once upon a time at a different salon, the stylist just used the wrong stuff and I avoided b&b until now. I use the red line shampoo and conditioner for chemically treated hair, defrizz, straight, and brilliantine (not necessarily at the same time). Brilliantine is my favorite. People stop me on the street and ask me about my awesome shiny hair. True story.
I was afraid to follow Nick from his previous salon to what I thought was a Lower Haight hipster mecca (I still hate the pictures on the website), but everyone is friendly and the talent is worth the trip from Oakland.
Typical. Characteristic, yet usual. Representative of the distinctive normal. Classic and Conventional. Mainstream Average America.
This place screams Urban Outfitters. If you wear anything from that store, then this is the place to get your hair cut.
Think..swept over bangs.
Think..short layers of layers.
Think..headbands and bobs.
Think...they know how to cut hair.
They do, they really do, they are just very typical. Typical little hipster salon with typical hipster prices.
This is not a bad review, this is an honest review.
Typical is not always bad...it's just typical. (3.5 stars)

Jayne is my hero.
If you've ever had a hair color go wrong you will know what I am talking about.
I went to Jayne with what felt like the biggest problem in my life and she calmed me down and got me through it. My previous stylist (another salon, will go unmentioned) really messed up and made my hair an orangey red when I wanted a chocolate brown. UGH! Jayne knew exactly what to do and with a little time, I walked out of the salon feeling "fixed" and happy. I have seen Jayne several times since and gone from brown to blonde to brownish blonde and NEVER ONCE have I had a hint of that orangey red I hated so much. Thanks Jayne!
I look forward to my appointments at Edo not only to see Jayne but to chill at the salon. Every time I visit Edo I am welcomed by the receptionist and offered some tea or wine. You really feel comfortable there and everyone is super friendly. There is always a featured artist in the salon so the atmosphere is aesthetically pleasing as well. My salon for life!
Excellent stylists abound at Edo! Only place I go to get a haircut these days. I am a guy who wants a low maintenence cut that will grow out properly....and Sara rocks it everytime!
This is a shop that is always buzzing with business, and for good reason...they run a tight ship with lots of different services and a killer staff. Preiod.
Edo also has a cool thing going with the rotating art show. Highlighting the locals is what I am all about.
No question - Edo Salon gives good hair.
When I first came to Jayne with my terrible anchorwoman haircut many, many years ago, she didn't even laugh or scoff at me, she just made it better and fabulous. She fixed my horrible DIY color and I haven't gone anywhere else since. I no longer even have to give her any direction when I come in for cuts, just "make it fabulous, please". And she does. It's like she's magic. We've gone all over the color map together from platinum to highlights to brown, and she's done it all amazingly. Edo is not for the Super-Cuts-discount-generic hair crowd. Prices are standard SF salon prices, but you absolutely get what you pay for!
Which brings me to the Brazilian Keratin Relaxy Hoo Hoo...
UH-MAZING. I have the wavy-mushroom-fro that isn't cute straight, isn't cute curly, just kind of not-cute big mushroom if not tended to properly with the flat iron and blow dryer and a bazillion products. I am lazy and not particularly good with a flat iron (it's harder than you think!), so I tried the Brazilian Keratin Relaxing treatment and it CHANGED MY LIFE. It's like a reverse perm that made my hair smaller and straighter, but still with a little bend at the end and best of all, I now have wash and go hair. No maintenance or product required! And it doesn't get mushroomy! It has been 3 months now since Brandon applied the treatment from heaven and I still have not cracked open a bottle of product. LOVE IT. So much less time spent on my hair and I can come out of the shower, do nothing, and not have a big hairarium. Plus, the special ph-balanced shampoo they give you smells delicious. (Someone followed me around the grocery store because they liked how my hair smelled. Weird... but true.) The treatment is spendy, takes a while to put on (3 hours for me maybe?), but it has lasted for 3 months now and when it eventually washes out, I am going to get it done again. And again. Forever. Goodbye mushroom!
Edo is the best hair salon I have been to in SF. (I've been to It's All About You, Isa's, and a few others). This is the first I have been to 3 times in a row, and it is because Jessica gives the best cuts!
I'm currently rocking the Victoria Beckham signature cut, and recently was married. She cut my hair before the wedding (a nail-biter), and it turned out perfectly just as before! When I first came to her, I was "recovering" from a bad back of the head- Isa does not know what Victoria Beckham's haircut looks like- shaving incident, she worked with me and put me at ease. Within minutes, my hair looked much better (although magical hair-growing technologies have yet to come out).
Jessica is highly recommended and I won't be going elsewhere anytime soon!
I have been going to Edo for years, and finding Jayne changed my beauty life! I'm convinced she does the best blonde in the city.
Roxy has also given me the best cut I have had since I have been painfully not cutting my hair for months..and now I have a hot shag that gives off a sexy anime bob effect when pulled back. yes!!!!! Just what I was waiting for!!
All of the stylists at Edo are ON IT and will make you look amazing.
The salon is also super arty and comfy.
I've been hopping around for years looking for THE place to get a cut which combines the crucial factors of price, style and service. In the past, I would grow my hair really long and then really short but nothing in the middle - that would be too hard. Or at least find someone who could cut and style it at that 'just so' length that was acceptable to me.
At first I was intimidated by the uber hipster vibe of the place... but I had no cause for concern. Everyone was friendly and there actually was a jovial feeling in the air. If a haircut costs $50++ (I know, I know... it's 'reasonable', but I used to go to the ubiquitous $14 place and the occasional $40+ salon) one shouldn't have to feel like s/he's doing an establishment a favor, especially these days when times are tough/er.
Special shout goes out to BRANDON B. First time I've entirely trusted someone in this department (ok ,my 'hair'.. it just sounds lame for a guy to be overly concerned about hair but there it is. If you had my experience you'd probably be just as grateful.). I get the feeling the other stylists are also friendly and non-intimidating but I feel lucky I had Brandon the first time around. I've already gone back once (today, in fact) and I'll be back again and again.
Love this place... very cool, funny, artsy people. They also have cool art posted and hold fashion/ art shows sometimes... I went there about a few times for color, always sticking to the pinkish/red/purple hues. I always came out there with bright highlights of various shades of pink/ red and purple and right when I walk out, I get complimented by people off the street of Haight. They use Special Effects hair dye (the ones you find in Hot Topic) so it always came out so shiny and luminous. At the time too, I worked in downtown SF and can't believe how many compliments were said about the hair when walking down the street. They made such daring colors look more sophisticated than wild. It also faded out beautifully....
but I have since outgrown the pink hair days and have gone natural... so yeah....but I really miss pink hair - was at the time my trademark and it was all thanks to Edo Salon!
Edo is an excellent salon. I have been going to Emma for over a year now. She is smart, funny, cool, and does absolutely great cuts. The atmosphere there is chill and cool, it is not one of those evil, intimidating salons where people glare at you threateningly, if you are not a size zero supermodel hipster (which of course I am, I just feel bad for those other people....yah...totally j/k, people).
I really recommend Edo.
Having said that, I have to admit that tomorrow I am going to cheat on Emma. I am 1/2 Japanese and found a really, really cool haircut in a Japanese hair magazine. The Japanese hair magazine that is written all in.....Japanese. It involves some complicated texturing, possibly some perming of some sort (hey, I said I was 1/2 Japanese, I didn't say I could read complicated chemical instructions in Japanese), so I am cheating on Emma and Edo to go to Japan Center Beauty Clinic Hair and Skin Care in J-Town. Despite its Japanese name, Edo is not a Japanese salon.
My cheating is in no way reflective of any unhappiness with Edo and Emma-- in fact, I adore them both and recommend both highly! It is just that I am a flaky commitmentphobe with a penchant for Japanese cuts with instructions written in Japanese, which is why after a wonderful year + with Edo and Emma, I am checking out another stylist.....
But Edo truly is great, and ask for Emma for sure!
I've been back to Edo about 6 times after my last review and they are still amazing. Roxy, whom I still go to and will forever remain with never lets me down.
The place is always clean and everyone working there is completely set on making your experience be as great as it can be.
Hands down one of the best salons in SF.

I love this salon!
I went to Haight street looking for another place and found Edo and Zip Zap… Read more »
Since Rosette left this place sucks. My boyfriend was getting a cut here but the girl didn't listen to him at all. Basically she just buzzed his head and sent him on his way. Extremely disappointing. Go see Rosie just down the street.

I was seriously nervous about getting my hair done again after headlights but after several friends… Read more »
JUSTIN is a genius. And he's funny too.
NO ONE has cut my hair better than Justin. I have pretty thick/a lot of wavy/curly hair. I walked out of there with the hair of my dreams. It will look awesome wavy, but looked AMAZING straight.
This guy is a true artist. And I think it's natural and effortless, though I think he has had some MAJOR training!
Thanks to my best friend Rebecca for turning me on to him!!!
Justin Forever!
Some people just have a passion for hair. Sean is one of those people, he's a master at what he does, he's nice and friendly too.
Sean is a master, an artist and I will be back.
I had a total homer simpson 'doh!' moment the other night. After too much sake, I made the not so brilliant decision to try and make myself look like gwen stefani.
I wanted that gorgeous, electric white blonde that she so effortlessly pulls off. Instead of making an appointment like any normal girl would do, I misjudged my own abilities and attempted to do it myself with a box of blonde-o-trashy. Oh...my.
I was y-e-ll-o. The next morning, with a clearer head I stood in the mirror, accessing the damage and cursing myself for being such an idiot. Immediately after, I calledEdo for some damage control. They took pity on me and fit me in the same day.
Dear sweet Jessica took my disaster of a 'do and fixed it right on up. she gave me my desired Gwen colored and I no longer looked like an offspring of Dog the bounty hunter.
I'll be back when these roots start to grow out!
I am fresh back from yet another another life changing cut and color from Jayne. This lady has magic all over her! Deft with the shears, genius with color, an encyclopedic knowledge of vintage and contemporary looks, an acute understanding of what will work for your specific features with a willingness to tell you the cold hard truth (in the most charming way). I love that you can decide you want to look like late 70's Nancy Wilson from Heart and she not only gives you the perfect cut, but suggests makeup and clothing that will complete the look!
I have been a devoted client of Jayne's since the 1990's when I was fierce-ing my way through my 20's with hair to match and she took my color from dark to russet, to strawberry, back to dark again, all while delivering me a head of bouncing, behaving hair. Now that I am in my 30's, she is able to give me more age appropriate hair without sacrificing style.
There is so much eye candy at Edo, from the cute stylists, to the darling clientele, to the ever-changing art shows from local artists. There is zero attitude and you are always welcomed with wine or tea.
This place epitomizes what I love about San Francisco: warmth, style, authenticity and sparkle.
Worth the cost (~$50). Brandon cut my hair, and it turned out fantastic. Edo hair stylists are passionate and excited about hair, and it definitely shows in their work. Brandon was thorough with questions when figuring out what I wanted, and his good intuition meant that figuring out what I wanted didn't take long. He cut my hair almost exclusively with a dry razor, which took longer but looked WAY better than my hair had ever looked after being cut with scissors or clippers. Brandon also gave some general hair care tips that were very helpful.
Haircuts include a shampoo before the cut and a rinse after. The atmosphere is stylish and young. Also, lots of good looking young women work at Edo, so that was a plus. Next time I get my hair cut in SF, I'll definitely be back.
Edo is completely different from other salons. They really cared and understood the particularities of my personal style. They were accommodating, down to earth yet so professional. I left looking/feeling like a star with something unique going on. You know that feeling? I watched the stylist do things on my head I've never seen before-Like Edward scissor hands or something(?). When she was done, I realized she had taken into account my head shape and facial features and cut my hair accordingly. Totally amazing! Edo made me Sexy.
I go to Edo specifically for Becky. All of the staff are really friendly, do really great hair but for me, curly sometimes, straight others, Becky is my girl.
When I first called Edo (after reading great reviews) I asked the receptionist if they had a hair dresser with really curly hair and voila (!) I got Becky! She is the best. Her experience and knowledge of both hair color and hair cutting goes back to her childhood (as a result of growing up around hairdressers and learning by doing) and she obviously loves what she does. After discussing my hair concerns with her I felt completely comfortable in her hands.
The end result is always great, I always leave with a smile and a bounce in my step (and believe me, this doesn't happen often!).
Curly hair (especially mine) is not easy to cut, style or color, but Becky always does a stellar job!
After my bf's bad haircut, the owner wrote me a really nice email offering to rectify the situation. Edo really does care about their customers, and I appreciated her great attitude.
