I love Edgewater, because I know I will be stocking my fridge with healthy produce, meats, and cheeses, while spending a fraction of what I would have spent at the chain grocery stores.
As for complaints about the size, I figure if they don't have it, I don't need it.
I am occasionally disappointed when they run out of their freshly made salsa - it's amazing. But then I just pick up the ingredients to make my own ;)
It gives the big "Oh" every single time!! As in Ohhh yeah... what were YOU people thinking?!?!
They are filled with all kinds of items for a pleasurable night.
I like to start with peeling off layer by layer, getting more and more excited to get to the bareness of an onion.
Nothing gets the heart pumping like some long stocks that go all the way up to butt of the celery.
I don't mind shaving off the hair, you just have to be gentle with a peach (I don't mind a little fuzz on my peach, some people don't like it at all).
Nothing gets me more excited then nice full firm melons. I love to gently squeeze them, you could say caress them, just waiting till I get a taste.
Pulling back the skin I find that I like my bananas nice and firm.
I can't help but relate to a cucumber and they carry some of the biggest around, I always say eat it raw.
Some say I have talented hands, of course you have to, if going to eat a pomegranate.
I always say give me some heat on my dish or I won't be happy, I am constantly spicing it up.
To me the core is the best part of a plum, you almost feel it's flavor coursing through you. Like you have somehow connected to it, like you know where it's been and the journey it's been through.
Almost to the end, off course if you can make it, lay it all down on a nice soft bed of your choice, and finish it all off. I usually go with spinach.
For dessert... They don't call it passion fruit for nothing, is all I'm saying!
A little oil, a little heat, and you could make a whole night of it. Hell, why not a morning too (after you brush your teeth, of course)!!
Tip: Don't be afraid to get rough, sometimes it's more fun to ravage
What?!?! Can't a guy get excited about a produce market, why do you people always have to be so dirty!?!? You get a lot for very little money here, it rocks!!
It's probably already a cliche to say it's "better than going to Jewel" which is just across the street. The only problem I see with Edgewater Produce is it's too small. That's not really a negative thing. I like the store so much I wish they had more. It's clean, the produce is fresh (except for the bananas today, which were too ripe, but I'll let that one slide), and it doesn't smell like rotten melons, which is what the produce section at a certain "big grocery store" smells like.
I came in today just wanting to restock a few fresh fruits on my way home from work. I also walked out of there with a tub of guacamole and this huge bag of tortilla chips that was only $2.39. My bill came out to about $15. At the "big grocery store" it would have cost somewhere around $25. I was satisfied.
Edgewater Produce. I LOVE YOU!!!!!
Why four stars? Well, this place could be bigger and have better selection of staples and non-food items, but I am here mainly for the meat and produce. Oh such consistently good produce. I can always count on Edgewater for fresh and yummy fruits and veggies, and the meat is fresh and inexpensive. They also carry Boar's Head stuff in the deli section.
So if you are in the neighborhood and you are a big fan of good produce, do yourself a favor and stop by, you will not be disappointed.
I am so happy to see other people love my new discovery as much as I do. I hit Edgewater Produce once a week to fill my cart with a random variety of fruits and vegetables. No matter how hard I try, I never spend more than 35 or 40 bucks. I just look at the produce at Jewel and spend 50.
20 limes for $1 and pints of blueberries for 99 cents today. I just spent $3 on each pint of blueberries Monday at the Jewel on Broadway/Thorndale. I eat a lot of fruit apparently.
The fresh nuts and dried fruit rack has an ample enough supply to entertain anyone, and the prices are right. They also offer deli meat, but can't say that I've tried it. Not my thing.
If you haven't hit Edgewater Produce yet, here's my secret: start in the back at the rack across from the rotisserie chicken. You have to eat it within 24-48 hours... but there are really good markdowns on fruits and veggies on the rack. I usually can pick up a few large eggplants for 99 cents.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the service. Everyone is extremely friendly and always offer to help me to my car.
One of the many reasons that I consider Edgewater and Andersonville the best Neighborhood in Chicago!
The deals on fruit are down right intoxicating for instance right now two pineapples for three dollars...and the limes are 10 for a dollar but I have even seen them as cheap as 20 for a dollar...
beyond the fresh fruit they even carry a great selection of vegetables as well as nuts and dairy products they even have my Fage greek yogurt!
Another back-to-basics winner in Chicago! In a nutshell, this is what shopping at the grocery store used to feel like. Edgewater keeps it simple and delivers quality produce, with a nice selection of ethnic influenced canned and dry goods, and a decent, modestly sized fresh meat/deli. I reminds me of the markets we used to have here before the mega-supermarts took over. It also reminds me of the way shopping is still done in Europe to a great degree. I have been making a point to try and support local business since the economy went South and this is the kind of place that deserves to succeed. And they will if they keep doing things right! After all, who needs to shop in a grocery store with halogen lighting and Italian marble mosaic in the entry way? So, a big 4 stars from me and I will be going back!
Definitely dig this place as the first leg of a shopping trip (the second leg ending across the street at the Jewel).
There are a few reasons to really get into Edgewater Produce.
First, the produce is much better than the Jewel's across the street and more reasonably priced than anything else in the area. They have just about anything you could want, or not want (cactus leaf) for that matter.
Second, there is definitely a family feel to this place. All the checkout girls joke around in Spanish, and are very friendly, but not as friendly as the waiters at Hamburger Mary's down the street.
When I go, I am typically able to get all the vegetables I need for dinner for under three dollars. Damn. How freakishly reasonable.
Unfortunately, you will have to go next door for some other staples. I often see many of the people I just saw at Edgewater traipsing the aisles of the Jewel, no doubt looking for some overpriced Parmesan.
Go here. Buy fruit. Buy vegetables. 'nuff said.
I used to work in the neighborhood and I think this place is solid. They've got a nice fresh selection, it's pretty clean, and the prices are competitive.
I don't go to Edgewater as much anymore, but when I do I'll probably drop in and snag some produce.
You'll find me in here nearly every week, so I'm not sure why I'm only now writing a review!
This is my go-to place for fresh produce to keep my kitchen well stocked and my dinner guests raving. With the exception of my recent New Year's fiasco of trying to hunt down black-eyed peas, they also have a fantastic assortment of dried and canned goods. If you're looking for nuts, trail mix, or some other snack food, check out their bulk selection packed in plastic clamshell containers. How about good queso? The refrigerated section is chock full of it. The deli counter also has great deals on a variety of meats and cheeses.
The store is fairly well organized and kept clean. I haven't had many problems with discovering bad food, except for the occasional icky strawberry buried in the middle of the pack, but I expect that sometimes, no matter where I shop. Unlike other places, I don't have to dig through the piles of produce to find just a few good pieces of fruit or veggies. Almost everything is of high quality and looks fresh.
My wallet is thankful that I make this a regular stop. I can easily walk out with 2 or 3 bags full of groceries and barely hit the $20 mark.
I rarely have to set foot in the big J across the street, which keeps me sane. So go here and go often. I'll meet you by the tomatillos!
Edgewater Produce was just dandy until I encountered its superior sibling store HarvesTime and realized what I'd been missing. However, Edgewater Produce is a reasonably priced alternative to the Jewel across the way, and their deli/meat section is pretty swell.
When I saw the 2-star, I felt like I had to speak up.
This place has amazing cheap produce at good prices. Large, great shape and CHEAP! 10 limes for $1! 1.99 bag of white onions! 2.99 large carton of blueberries! What is not to like?
Once, I needed short ribs and couldn' t find at the Jewel across the street. Not only did EP have them, they were as cheap as can be!
The service is adequate - I usually am perusing the produce myself.
This is a jewel that I am fortunate to have around the corner.
Fresh produce. Cheap prices. Friendly staff. Just down the street here in Andersonville!
This is a nice little grocery store that is much, much cheaper than anything else in the neighborhood and a good antidote to the abomination across the street (Jewel). I usually only buy produce here and, as everyone seems to have mentioned, it is shockingly inexpensive. Quality, however, is sometimes a problem. I routinely get onions here that when cut open are half rotten and you have to really hunt through the bell peppers to find the good ones. Still, for the prices you're paying, this is pretty small beer.
The staff seems friendly, even if you don't speak Spanish, and I love the fact that they put up the old fashioned signs in the windows telling you what the special sales are.
Bottom line: Highly recommended, though not as good as Harvest Time or Stanley's.
I love them. They're clean, they're nice, they're fresh. They're CHEAP!!! Cheaper and fresher than Stanley's AND the Jewel across the street. Crowded but not overcrowded. And although they may not look like it, they DO take credit cards, but since your total will never come to more than $14, you could do them a favor and pay in cash.
I suggest taking the 22 bus and not trying to park (you'll get towed if you park at Jewel and come over here) and also grabbing a basket instead of a cart. Makes maneuvering the tiny "aisles" easier. I also suggest skipping the cheeses at the deli which smell funny and go bad within a day. The meat, however, has NEVER let me down. The corn is delicious. The zucchini lasts forever. Edgewater and its mama Harvest Time on Lawrence have made me HAPPY!!
Veggies and fruits...your mother told you to eat more and this is the place I go when I need them. The Jewel Osco across the street drove me here, but I'm glad it did.
Small and family owned, this provides fresh and cheap veggie/fruits with standard offerings for Mexican clientele.
My go to place for my better side of my eating habits.
How is that jewel across the street even open? It is awful. Edgewater Produce has practically everything you could ever need! We have unfortunately become a three grocery store family (Trader Joe's for breakfast cereal, Cardinal for booze...) but I could not imagine getting produce anywhere else. It is crazy fresh, always stocked, and I've never seen red bell peppers that hubungus. They also have some interesting ingredients that I haven't seen around, like mexican zucchini and nopales. And did I mention how cheap everything is?
The best grocery store! Super friendly, street parking if you have to drive. I'm never disappointed.
This is why I live in the city. Produce markets, with good fruits & veggies reasonably priced. How often do I leave with bags of stuff for under $20? Small but quite adequate ethnic foods - greek yogurt that Jewel/Dom. doesn't carry anyway, and real meats, parts and all. And the yummy nuts & chocolate pretzels are bonus. I always leave so happy!
Yo, $1.29 a pound for boneless, skinless chicken breasts that haven't been manhandled at Jewel? PHENOMENAL.
Same owners as HarvesTime, though this location is a bit smaller. Beware of cramped aisles and bring your patience. You'll be rewarded with a shockingly low grocery bill. Worth it.
Oh, and get the chicken fajitas pre-made, they are cheap and wonderful...(same recipe as HT)!

Oh, it's a Jewel v. Indie Grocery showdown.
Edgewater wins by a mile. Smallish shop with great… Read more »
Yes, the economy is going down the tubes. Rush Limbaugh- otherwise known as a bag of hot air- has labeled it the Obama Recession. That is a pretty amazing fact considering we just elected Obama, he is not yet in office, and the economy has been circling the drain for the past year. Despite the mislabeling of our current status it is important to make every dollar stretch to the maximum.
So, Dems and Repubs might not agree on how it started, but we can agree that we have to maximize our bucks.
Enter Edgewater produce! Oh MY. I was in here today. I am now set on produce and happy about it!
For a grand whopping total of $ 7.47 including tax I purchased
* 4 LARGE Michigan golden apples
*2 Avocados
*4 Bosch Pears
*1 five pound bag of red potatoes
HOLY CRAP! WHAT an AWESOME deal. I now have extra grocery money for the week that can be blown on something fun. YAHOO!
Better produce than the Jewel across the street... umm, that is not a high bar. I'll give them one better, and say they have good produce, but that being said, I probably wouldn't go here if I didn't live right by it.
Everything is fresh, but due to the fact that it's in such a small space they are not going to always have everything you're looking for - I've had to venture on to find certain kinds of peppers that were in season, for example. Overall though if you're an Andersonville/Edgewater resident, you should definitely check this place out for your fruit and veggies. If not, probably skippable.
5 ears of corn for $2! Yes please! That's like...(whips out calculator for tough math)... .40cents an ear! Again I say yes please!
I've also had green beans, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, onions, and many, many other items from here and all of it was good and very fresh.
I just wish this place was closer because I would be here all the time especially with the new diet kicking in! Oh well time to get on the #22 and stock up!
Clean, safe, courteous.
Great produce, great meats, excellent prices. Their homemade salsa could be better, but without this grocery store I would starve!
Jewel is a joke.
Oh Edgewater Produce! What would I do without you?!?!?!?
I have noticed a few other reviews that state the EP is not worth a special trip. This may or may not be true, but I am sure glad it's in my 'hood! It's not as big as a supermarket, but they aren't claiming to carry as much stuff. Produce and meat -- that's their main thing.
The produce is always amazing! It's fresh, it's presented well and it's CHEAP! Why does anyone buy the lame, shrivelled produce at the Jewel across the street when the EP beckons with fabulous freshness? I guess some people just like to spend their hard earned cash on overpriced nonsense.
The meat department is equally stunning! It's all very fresh. They will even cut things to order (try convincing someone at the Jewel to do that -- I have and it was neither fun nor pretty). It's a divine place to buy chicken breasts -- they are plump, meaty and whole -- one breast is 2 VERY generous servings. They also have a nice selection of deli meats and cheeses. The price for a full pound at the EP is usually less than what Jewel charges for a half pound.
To top it all off, the store has a great selection of ethnic products and spices. The place is immaculately clean and the staff is always helpful.
You go, Edgewater Produce! You'll always get my business!
Veggies, Fruits, Goya products, bulk herbs, and not my Whole Paycheck.
Thanks EP. You're still my favorite neighborhood grocer, and you've rocked my recipes since 1998.
I stopped by Edgewater Produce today for a couple of extra fruits and vegetables that we needed for 4th of July Dinner. Got there around 4:30pm and they were open until 6:00pm and reasonably busy. Great looking and tasting produce (peppers are especially good). All stuff was very reasonably priced.

Awesome spot for produce! Fresh and cheap. Occasionally they have organic varieties, but very occasionally. I can leave with four bags of produce and fruit for $15! You can't beat that. Best to shop for in season items, out of season the price goes up and the and quality goes down, but that's the story everywhere, right?
One star off because even though I don't eat meat, the butcher area looks like it could be kept cleaner and sometimes there is a particularly funky odor.
Tongue is called "tongue" because it's a tongue. This is often lost on those who eat it when they are little and even on those who enjoy it - - until they realize what it is.
I've written here about tongue in various contexts as a delicacy among many cultures, and it sure is in my experience.
This weekend Edgewater was selling beef tongue for $2.89 lb. I bought a tongue; brought it home, and cooked it on Sunday morning, which was the next best thing to a seance with my grandmothers. I boiled this baby for three hours and was able to make my home smell just like those wonderful days as a kid when I would enter my grandmothers' homes and would always know if we were having tongue for dinner because the smell was soooo luscious.
It tasted pretty damn good, too.

Oh the guilt I feel when I park in the Jewel lot & wander over to this haven of fresh produce. Okay, I do not feel that guilty since I go to Jewel on the same trip.
Edgewater Produce offers such an array of fresh produce--that is kicks Jewel's not so little bootay. The price is right (stuff there is about 1/2 the amount Jewel charges), the options are many, and the quality is excellent. For some reason their stuff just looks better as well--for instance the cilantro tends to smell fresher than their counterpart across the street. There is also lots of love for a place where you can your spice on--lots of ethnic spices.
The only complaints I would have, is that it is small so navigating a cart can be treacherous and the check out women (I have never seen a guy doing the check out counter) look at you like you are wasting their time. Would it kill them to maybe smile at you? Or not spend the whole time chatting in Spanish to their friend as they are ringing you out? Personally, the Spanish does not bother me as I can understand it, but I have seen others be put out by that.
Edgewater Produce is one of the reasons I remind myself why I enjoy living up North. Two reusable shopping bags filled with fresh produce, salsa and tortillas under $20! Try doing that at Jewel or Dominicks. And not to mention limes are currently 20 for $1.00. Take that Domincks at 89 cents EACH!! They also have a huge amount of packaged nuts, yogurt pretzels and candies that are inexpensive. I haven't been brave enough to try the meat counter yet, but the prices I saw were tempting. The store is clean and they frequently mop with Fabuloso, so it always smells pretty good in there for a meat/produce market.
Don't tell the Morse Fresh Market, but sometimes I cheat on it with this place. Maybe if Morse would carry things like red lentils, I wouldn't cat around with my grocery shopping.
No organic produce in sight, but the stuff here is still fresh and reasonably priced. Excellent selection of dried legumes and such.
Whenever I shop here, I feel like I'm getting away with something. Where else in the neighborhood can I go shop that I can walk out with nearly too many bags to carry of fresh produce and other various food items for less than $20? There is no place else.
Edgewater Produce has a large selection of fruits and vegetables, including a few that I have no idea what to do with. For those that I don't have the culinary knowledge to use properly, all I have to do is ask one of the people working there in the produce section or sometimes another customer for a bunch of ideas. I found out that chayote can be a very good treat in soups, salads, or stuffed, for example.
The meat department is really good too. They have a lot of beef, chicken, and pork, and little bit of fish. This place is especially good if you want to cook Mexican, and are looking for the right cuts of meat and such.
I just wish they had more groceries in addition to their meats and produce, but Jewel is right across the street for that stuff.
I love this place. Their produce is super cheap, fresh, and better than what you'd find at Jewel or Dominicks. It blows away places like Cermak Produce in terms of quality and freshness, yet it's just as cheap (or cheaper). I make the trek here from Humboldt Park once a week to stock up on fruits and veggies. This place rocks, hands down.
Best city find so far....
I'm shocked every time I pay here, its just so cheap and amazing...
In fact, it may actually be even cheaper than the Polish/Greek/Russian stores of my childhood in suburbia, which I never thought was possible
new vegetables to discover - florida avocadoes anyone??
My roommate and I actually took the time to compare prices to Jewel next door - ridiculous!!!
Same tomatoes - 0.68/lb vs. 1.79/lb - what is their magic??
And I'm slowly falling in love with Andersonville....
First, let me say this: I'm unemployed. Edgewater Produce helps me keep my grocery bills under $20/week. I supplement with Costco, but for me, this is IT.
You simply CANNOT find better deli meats (Boar's Head Turkey Breast is super fresh, and less than $5/ 1/2 pound), and produce, on the north side. Literally, my typical week's bill looks like this:
2 bags baby carrots = 2$1.29
Fuji apples - 5$.69/pound
Musrhooms - 1 container $.99
Navel Oranges - 5@ .89/pound
Sweet Potatoes - 3@ .69/pound
1/2 Pound Boar's Head Turkey - $4.50
1 10 oz. bag spinach - $1.29
1 carton Eggs - $.89
I will never shop for produce or deli at a Jewel or Dominick's again. Period. Plus, the staff is super helpful, and the dry goods selection is pretty good too. Oh, and the fresh tortillas are amazing.
How can I love this place more? $40 gets me a load of groceries that threatens to burst my little granny cart! Produce is way better than Jewel - 4 lemons for $1? 10 garlic heads for $1? Why has Jewel not gone out of business yet. If this place had booze, I'd not shop anywhere else.

After wasting a large amount of money on some shoddy produce at Jewel, I decided to give this place a try.
They have quite a selection of vegetables, fruits, and other staples that you will need. I got everything that I needed for a few days for under $15, which I thought was pretty impressive. The quality of the produce was very good, hardly anything was bruised, leaking, other otherwise malformed.
Prices are very affordable. You're in and out in a matter of minutes. No long check out lines like you'll find at Jewel.
In short, Edgewater Produce has become a required stop for me when getting the groceries.
Ok, so sometimes this place doesn't smell so nice. Kind of like fried food and fabric softener, a combination of scents that can drive me up the wall. It's why Kellie isn't allowed to cook bacon in our apartment. I digress. But, oh, the prices here. And the selection. Soprasseta. Fresh basil. Plump tomatoes. Ten different kinds of lettuces and greens. Cheeses. Breads. Roasted chickens. It's all here. And at bargain prices. I love that I can buy four heaping bags of fruits and veggies for $30! I'd spend twice that at Jewel, for less than comparable offerings.
I love this place!
Edgewater produce is a great place to get fresh vegetables and fruit. I think their biggest asset is that they are able to get the produce out and sold so a quick turnover is key to their freshness. You can also find a large selection of fresh herbs.
They do have a meat counter that at first I was a little hesitant to purchase from; however they have been having better items than the Jewel across the street. On the last two occasions, I was looking for ribs which Edgewater had and at a very inexpensive price. The other, I was looking for ground pork, Jewel wouldn't (or couldn't) grind a pork loin/roast for us so we went across to Edgewater. I asked them for 5lbs of ground pork, he looked at me and said they did not have any ground but if I had a few minutes they would grind it for us.
Good reliable produce and reasonable prices.
I was very happy to find out when leaving my HarvesTime (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) behind that their 'sister' store, Edgewater Produce, would be in my new 'hood. Sadly, the HT raised the bar so high.
Now do not get me wrong, Egewater Produce is good stuffs, just on a much smaller scale. The produce that they carry is quality and fresh (what is up with the red peppers being 3.99$/lb for a couple weeks there though?); they have the basics in dry goods; you can get deli meats and cheeses.
However, I am missing my organic section of milk and yogurt and granola. Though I do enjoy their variety of pre-packaged bulk goods. Jury is still out on the meats as I have not yet tried enough of them; fish, however, I am staying away from as it looks rather sad.
All in all, solid 3.5 and their customer service and walking distance to me bumps it up to the 4. I love any place I can walk to for cheap, fresh produce. And, as for organic produce, I got me some organic bananas there last week. Maybe more choices are on the way?
