Edgecliff Bar & Grill
5 reviews for Edgecliff Bar & Grill
This place has gone through quite an upheaval over the years. From locally owned to fancy pants dining and back again. At one time, it was even a Chinese restaurant. But now it's back to it's old standard, a decent mix of some finer dining selections and good old-fashioned sammiches and burgers.
I admit: mostly my time here is spent in the bar as dad's a regular and knows the waitstaff so well they bring him his favorite beer before he even reaches his seat.
That said, the burgers are pretty damn good, the view can't be beat, the drinks are ALWAYS strong and about half price of what you pay anywhere in Seattle - so I'm sold.
So we are towards the end of our long Cascade Loop drive..driving along an island with limited views, and limited restos with views! How can you be on an island and be devoid of waterfront dining...hellllooo?
Anyway, we finally found one with a view...Edgecliff, and it was a great view for sure. We dreaded eating here though. We felt like we were walking into some outdated wedding hall, where the groom would be wearing a rose colored tux and a cumberbund. Yeah. Where is my choice of prime rib, salmon or chicken???
Well, we were surprised, it wasn't all that bad. The food was fresh and decent. Their patio needs work. What a great view and their patio is an afterthought...management?
It's worth a lunch spot on a nice sunny day but I'd probably shy away for dinner unless you were invited to a cheeseball wedding.
The Edgecliff has a fabulous location. If you are looking for a view with your meal nothing can beat the views over the water of the Cascade mountains, especially on clear sunny days and at the end of the evening. You can also sit outside in the summer.
However, ever since chef Gordon left to start his own restaurant the food has been lacking. I think this is in part due to an over ambitious use of sauces and other adornments on food that would otherwise be much more appealing if it was left in a more pristine state. Instead of being appealing to the eye and palette, it comes off as just being pretentious.
UPDATE - The menu has changed. It is now much simpler. Just steak and seafood dishes. Happy hour is popular.
Their salad's use fresh local ingredients (no iceberg here), with candied walnuts and delicious dressings, so as their only vegan option it was good. The service is above average, and they're probably the only restaurant on Whidbey that can combine a great view with outdoor seating.
Nice atmosphere for an Island restaurant. The service was a little lacking, but who am I to judge?
