Review Highlights
Awesome. Everyone was super helpful and chill. I brought in my road bike with a wonky derailleur to get a SS conversion (freewheel, yo, i like to coast downhill). They walked me through all the stuff i needed, told me the pricing was honest about everything, helped me pick all the parts that I'd need for this. They ordered the parts for me (wheelset, chainring, etc) and slapped them on FOR FREE. and he hooked me up with free new brake pads.
Probably the best bike shop I've ever been to. Also, tune ups are only $45, which is cheaper than other places I've been to.
I Don't even like writing these reviews, but I have to write it for this place because they are honest, amicable, unpretentious people.
So... I have been looking for a bike for months now. I wanted to support a local shop and really educate myself on what I should be looking for in terms of what each shop had to offer. I walked into Echo Park Cycles after work... ready to throw down some serious $$ (I was totally fed up with driving and wanted a bike f*ing STAT). Granted, I work in an art studio and usually leave work looking pretty haggard... but I didn't care! I wanted a bike!
The 3 people working in the shop didn't even notice me standing at the counter for a while. Finally a guy said "um... can I help you?" and I replied, "Yeah! I really want to buy a bike!" He then said, "and...?"
I then explained that I really wanted to buy a road bike, preferably used and at a reasonable price. I told him that I would love to chat about their inventory and understand more about what I should be looking for.
The guy then told me that they don't sell "used" bikes, only "refurbished" bikes and they don't have anything under $400. He then told me to go to another shop that might have more bikes in my price range.
So I went to Glendale Cyclery and dropped $1,100 cash on a Specialized dolce.
Way to loose a sale!
Awesomeness. Staff is Awesome, very helpful and friendly. If you have bike problems/questions, this is the place.
I'd consider this one underrated shop by the growing cycling community. I know they just recently changed their hours, which should be better but their previous hours were understandable.
I can only put this short; I have always been served with great assistance. Never have I been given any hard nosed attitude. Even I, who on some days will look like a typical hipster recently joining the fixed gear fandom, has been treated well. Not that that would warrant less respect.
They are still getting things together but it all looks promising. They're inventory is kept up with quality parts and, as mentioned, anything they don't have they can order. All owners and employees are working messengers and know their craft. It would be ill-advised not to support the shop.
BEST.
BIKE.
STORE.
EVER!
I've been here with a friend just hanging out and the staff was courteous, friendly and without one iota of pretentiousness.
I've been here to get my bike fixed and I received a phone calls from the staff constantly updating me on the condition of my bike. The price of the work done was cheap and fair.
I came in last week and told them I wanted to buy a new derailer and they actually talked me out of it. Any other shop would probably push me into the direction of them receiving more money.
They took a look at my bike. They REMEMBERED my bike from the last time I brought it then they started to fix it.
While they were fixing my bike, they gave me some advice on how to avoid the problems in the future. They told funny stories. They made me want to hang out there even longer.
In the end, they just charged me a 5spot. I didn't see a tip cup but man, these guys need one. I want to stop by a few times a month and slip them a 20.
Hell, I want to write them a song or a poem or go to camp and make them a lanyard.
This is the type of bike shop every neighborhood deserves but doesn't get.
Orange 20?! I'm looking in your direction. Take a lesson from these guys. This is how you are supposed to treat customers.
Echo Park cycles is an excellent neighborhood bike shop.
Everybody is really sweet and helpful from the shop dog on up.
The selection isn't huge, because the shop isn't huge.
They carry a refined selection of great stuff and will do special orders for you.
Their hours are limited during the week because all the owners are all working bike messengers.
I took my bike in today. A fixed gear with a slightly noisy chain. They fixed it up real fast and got it running super smooth.
Echo Park cycles is one of those L.A. gems. A warm and soulful family shop run by people who truly love what they are doing.
Thank GOD this place opened. I had my vintage Schwinn sitting under the porch for months, waiting to get a tuneup, and waiting in vain since there was no nearby bike place and I don't have a bike rack on my car. And also I'm lazy.
Anyway, I finally got to take it down the street to Echo Park Cycles, and they did a lovely job getting it all cleaned up and ready to go for a flat fee of $45. Plus they're super nice and have convenient late hours. Now I never have to succumb and get a bike rack or prostrate myself in front of the Bicycle Kitchen ever again.
I must have caught them on a bad day. The photos with all of the bikes in the store did not match what I saw when I went into the store. There was a VERY limited selection. And all of the bikes were a bit pricey. I gave it three stars because of the selection. It appears as though the staff is very helpful and they had quite a lot of repairs going on. So, they aren't a shop that deserves a poor rating, but I feel as though my fellow Yelpers raised my expectations.....which were not really met. Usually you guys do not fail me!
Just bought a sweet bike from them. I'm a bike newbie, and was somewhat intimidated at the prospect of shopping for a bike and not knowing exactly what I wanted or what was out there.
They very patiently explained things to me and helped me try on different bikes according to my needs and skill level, and once I found my bike, ran through basic care and maintenance etc. and were also just super nice. No bike snobbery to be found. ( I had shopped around and stopped by Orange 20 and the guy there was also super helpful as well, but Echo Park Cycles is closer and their selection at my price range was better.)
And they threw in a year of free repairs when I purchased my bike, which is awesome, since I am not that bike repair savvy on my own as of yet.
And they have a very cute little watch dog.
Love this spot. When it's not too busy, they'll let you get behind the counter and show you how to do whatever of bike maintenance you need. Everyone's knowledgeable and cool, and the bikes they have for sale are dope. They also have all the accessories and tools you could need. I recently went in to put a set of drop bars on my single speed. The bars I had didn't fit with my stem, but they had an older set laying around that they sold me for cheap, and wrapped up with a nice tape job. It feels good to support my local businesses, and I recommend it to anyone. Keep riding.
Bout time I updated. They've broadened their parts selection, and the service and helpfulness is as good as ever. Great shop.
Oh, and I retract my previous dig at Orange 20. Since they moved to their new location they've improved their service.
I still like EPC more though!

I love this shop. Friendly, knowledgeable folks, reasonable prices, and a smallish but well-chosen selection. Zero attitude, excellent atmosphere, and a great (for me) location. And yeah, cute dog! They are now my official go-to shop for all my bike needs.
Update on 12/08: after a bunch of shopping around I bought a new bike from Echo Park Cycles yesterday. I'd been dropping in frequently to ogle their bikes, buy various accessories, and pick their brains about this and that. They were consistently excellent to deal with so I was happy to purchase this bike from them. As a bonus, their price was lower than I'd found anywhere else for this model. They earned my business and they got it.
I meant to write this a while ago, but feel as strongly now as i did a few weeks ago when I went to Echo Park Cycles. I had the BEST experience. The guys (and gal) there are always nice and always helpful. I never get the feeling that I am asking them same that they've been asked 10,000 times (though I am sure they have) I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I ride by there even! I DO get faced every time walk in and see some nice old bike and "WANNNT!!!" and then they're like ...no it's a customer's bike. I wish they would sell cleaned up old road bikes =) anyhooo I feel super lucky to have this as my local bike shop!! 4 more years 4 more years!!!
i stopped in tonight on my way home from a friend's house. the shop caught my eye with their cool looking logo and plenty of parking all around. they didn't have the biggest selection of bikes, but the bikes they did have were really rad. the girl (michelle?) working was super nice and let me test drive one of the bikes even tho i told her i'm not in the market to buy a bike at the moment.
the prices didn't seem too outrageous and i'm typically more than happy to support independent local businesses. i think i'll be back to buy that bike soon!
Super friendly staff, they will never sell you something that you don't need. They are open late unlike other bike shops that close at 5
So I purchased my bike and anytime I have a problem (being that I'm a new rider) I can take my bike to them and they can fix it either on the spot or within 24 hours. I don't know many bike shops that can do that. Another huge plus is that recently they expanded their hours so that is even better. Still, my bike shop after a couple of months of riding.
