Review from Arlene M.
This was our first stop for our Paso Robles vacation. The tasting was free and all the wines we had were pretty good. We pre-ordered a picnic lunch since we wanted a guaranteed table, and didn't want to deal with bringing food in...it seemed a bit pricey from the website, but it actually came with A LOT of food. For our one order (which we split), we had 2 salads, a sandwich, an apple, a brownie, and a small bottle for pellegrino. It was definitely enough for two. We brought a couple cheeses to supplement the lunch, but we didn't need it.
I pretty much liked almost all the wines we tasted, and they even gave us a free glass to have with our picnic! We wound up taking home a bottle of their full boar red, cotes du robles, and the estate cab. I highly recommend this winery as a stop on your wine-tasting experience in Paso Robles. -

I had a friend in town visiting from Colorado (who drinks a lot of wine), so I took her to several wineries including Eberle. The grounds are very beautiful with a great outdoor seating area overlooking the vineyard.
We went on the VIP Tour, which was worth the price for the experience (and smaller crowd), and we were both very happy with the tour and the wines (and cheese pairings). We had been to several wineries the day before and they were OK, but Eberle has some very nice wines with a range of wines for all tastes, whether you like syrah, cab, zin, chardonnay, muscat, port, etc. Overall, their wines were consistently good. -

What I liked about Eberle:
- The grounds are very nice, with beautiful views of rolling hillsides covered with vines. Great outdoor patio area perfect for picnics.
- Free cave tour every half hour. You learn great information about the process of making wine, from harvest to fermentation to barrel aging to bottling.
- FREE tasting. Unlike the other wineries that charge, the tastings here are free - and you get to choose the 5 wines you want to taste from a list of about 10 - 15 wines (whites and reds).
What brought the rating down:
- Unfortunately the wines were not that great. I sampled the Barbera, Cotes du Robles and Zinfandel, but stopped after 3 wines because they all tasted mediocre.
I'd recommend stopping by this winery on your way in or out of town (if you're taking the 46), but not worth going out of your way to visit. -

Went to Eberle as a final stop on our Paso wine trip, and it easily became a favorite. The VIP cave tour is a must....it enables you to really appreciate the wines as you spend two hours privately tasting Eberle's huge selection. Our "wine guide" was Wade and he was not only very knowledgable about each bottle, but also showed a passion for the wine that made us happy to simply partake. He was very patient with all of our questions, and made what could have been a standard vineyard tour a bona fide educational experience.
As for the wines, Eberle stands out as one of the few Paso wineries that produces an incredible array of wines. In addition to the classic Paso Rhone varietals, they also had Italian and Portuguese grapes in both blends and single varietal bottles; regardless of the type, every wine was fantastic. The reserve cab is my personal favorite. Do yourself and your taste buds a favor and go visit!! -

My boyfriend and I went on the VIP Tasting Tour on NYE. SO worth the money. Tasted 10 wines underground in their caves at a private table with delicious cheeses and crackers with Sarah (I'm almost positive on the name). She was so friendly, knowledgeable and gave us numerous other great recommendations for wineries nearby to try. Very generous pours here. We ended up buying a few great bottles, the '07 Cabernet, Zinfandel, and Cotes du Rhone that we loved. Cannot say enough good things about our tour and the winery and our tour guide! Will be coming back to Paso soon!

This was also our first stop in Robles. We came in from the East on the 46. We had heard about the complimentary wine tasting and we decided to stop and give it a try. It was great. They have two sexy looking poodles. All groomed and stuff. We had about 5 or 6 tastings for free. Then we got a cave tour. All of this was free. The first old lady was a bit "offish". She was not really into making conversation with our group. But then she went to lunch and handed us over to this really nice younger lady who walked us through the rest of the tasting and the tour. The experience was great. The wine was mmmk. They actually have a really good Rhone. Next time we are in town, we will def be buying one of these bottles.

Came here after reading Seri's review and after seeing their wines at various stores. Easy to find as it's right off the main road. Once you arrive there, you will see the various art pieces of boar since Eberle translates to "small boar" in German.
When we got to the tasting room, I was surprised to find out that they offered 5 free tastings. Now what kind of wineries nowadays offers free tasting?! The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable. Loved the outdoor patio area. Of all the wines, I enjoyed their reds more. Enjoyed it enough that we walked out with a bottle of the 2007 Cotes-du-Robles and 2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. -

This was the first of three wineries we tasted at in Paso Robles and the one we liked the least. The best thing about this winery is that the tastings are free, which is a rarity nowadays (unless you're a member.) The wines were okay, but nothing stood out. I actually almost bought a bottle, but the service was too lousy to warrant any memories of the place, beyond remembering them enough not to go back.

I have to disagree with a couple reviewers below - I found their pours very stingy at best. Truth be told, I don't go wine tasting to get drunk - I actually want to taste and discern between wines at different locations. Huge pours that get me super tipsy just end the afternoon for me. With that said, the pour also needs to be substantial enough to really understand the wine, and I didn't see that happening here.
The wines I tasted here were just mediocre. I ended up purchasing their Chardonnay, which I did like, but I regretted it. It was our first stop of the day, and shortly after, at Peachy Canyon, Eberle's wine was completely trumped and forgotten.
We took the cave tour, which was slightly interesting. The girl leading the tour had clearly done the same speech 100+ times and was totally bored with the idea. They do, however, have a reserve tasting in the cave for a small party (about 8 people). At $35/person, lasting about an hour and a half, and with appetizers included, that sounds like a good treat on a hot afternoon. I'd come back for that reserve tasting in the cave, but not for tasting in the hot room upstairs. -

Wow! A winery that offers tasting without charge! And you can select the wines you wish to taste. The card says five tastings - but this was not strict. The servers in the tasting room were most courteous and helpful. My favorite wines are red wines, so that is the only wines I sampled.
The winery is an understated building that blends into the hillside location. It is not gaudy or pretentious. The location right on Hwy. 46 is great.
The proprietor of the winery, Gary Eberle, was a doctoral student at the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology - this is arguably the best wine school in the US.
Enjoyment of wine is obviously a subjective area. As I mentioned, reds are my thing. My favorite is a big cabernet sauvignon that has been aged so the tannins are softer; however, these cost plenty and are usually out of my budget. A lot of tannin in red wine that is not aged gives the wine an astringent quality.
I enjoyed the cabernet, zinfandel and my favorite red was the Full Boar Red. The Full Boar Red is a blend with mostly cabernet that was an outstanding value for me.
Money saving hint!! Costco in San Luis Obispo has Eberle wines. There was a cabernet and chardonnay that appeared to be a special bottling for Costco (there was no Costco identification on the bottles). Costco also had the Full Boar Red at about 20% less than it sold for at the winery. The cabernet and chardonnay were at super prices. -

Eberle was the first stop on our Paso wine tasting trip and on the whole we liked it.
The staff were not overly friendly --though they weren't rude, just very professional and not very friendly. This was particularly the case with our wine cave tour guide who seemed to be just going through the motions. I'm sure it gets repetitive but her boredom was contagious.
All that said, we enjoyed the wines, especially the Rose of Syrah which we bought a bottle of and shared for lunch on their patio. The wind was cold and strong that day but the views were wonderful!
Very dog friendly (we visited with the poodles and a fellow taster's dog as well as a cat which seemed to be most attracted to those with cat allergies)

Good wines, but I found the staff here to be unfriendly and a bit brusque. We had two different guys helping us, and both poured the wine into our glasses and promptly left with very little discussion or explanation.
Tastings were free, which was nice. I wanted to buy a bottle, but reconsidered. I'd probably get a friendlier "Thank you" buying from the cashier at Safeway or Bev Mo. -

I enjoyed our visit, this was the first winery on the trip so it can't be the wine talking:) Pretty view and good wines overall, we ended up getting some wine from the 'library' and felt lucky they had it in stock. As an aside, I love the boar.

We took pictures around the Penn State bus. Do it while you can before recent PSU news makes it politically incorrect. Wines were average, but my friends and I enjoyed poking around the grounds. We stopped here late in the day so maybe my taste buds were shot by then.

Good wine, nice location, great club. Eberle is known for its reds, especially their Cabs and Syrah, but their Viognier won best white in the region at the 2011 Sacramento State Fair.

Definitely do a wine cave tour here! It is so interesting and just plain neat to experience. They have an area in the cave for private parties which is a great idea and they also have a place for a private tasting set up for groups where they also serve cheese and crackers. This would be a good idea to do with friends.
The staff was so friendly and when they heard it was our honeymoon had a nice gift for us. Very sweet.
The tasting pour was not a sip, but more like 2 or 3 sips. Helped me to get a better buzz, oops, I mean taste for their wine :-)
We both loved their red and brought home a bottle of it to enjoy.
This is a must stop on your next winery tour. I hear the owner will sometimes be cooking on the huge grill on the patio and invite you for some lunch if your lucky.... -

This place is not a place for wine snobs as I found the tasting to not be about the education of the wine, their process, how they are different or focus on quality of the wine, but if you end up picking a few wines from the tasting menu, please pick the 07 Cab. I think its by far the standout of their reds with depth of flavor, body and character.

Okay, I'm not going to lie: Eberle was our last choice that day for wine tasting. My friend and I had made a list of wineries we wanted to try in Paso Robles, but one after the other, all of them were closing early on New Year's Eve! I'm talking 2:00 or 3:00. What the hell? On a tourist-packed holiday weekend? Anyways, one winery suggested we try Eberle, which is what we did. And boy were we amazed!
Eberle is famous for introducing the first modern Syrah vines to the US in the 1970s. Moreover, Mr. Eberle got his PhD from UC Davis, famous for its winemaking, which is also my alma mater.
Wines were excellent and prices were very reasonable. I liked the Steinbeck Syrah and the Zinfandel, but all their wines were good. Jeff, our server, was very nice and knew how to carry on a good conversation. And who could beat the fact that our entire wine flight was complementary! That's pretty rare these days.
I can't wait to go back the next time in town! -

The tasting room staff wasn't very attentive or friendly but the cave tour was great. The gentleman who led the cave tour was very knowledgeable and friendly. They had a decent gift shop. Next time I will do the VIP tasting in the caves! For $25 pp you get a VIP tour and private tasting with snacks.

Really nice tasting rooms, grounds and great view.. Don't forget to fuss Roux the Poodle.... Wines were drinkable but seemed to us that they have transitioned from loving wine to producing wine. This said, the Sangiovese was pretty damn good

Really enjoyed my visit to Eberle Winery. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. All of their wines are very delicious and there wasn't one thing we tasted that didn't please. I was very excited by their Chardonnay. I'm not usually a fan, but theirs is not as buttery as I've had in the past and you can taste the fruit. They also have a Full Boar which is very good for the price. But really everything there is good. Outside there is an area with table. I was there on a Wednesday so it was pretty quiet, but based on the huge BBQ they probably have events. Definitely make this a stop when visiting Paso Robles.

We had a good time at Eberle. It was our 3rd stop of the day and we had plans to do the Cave tour. It was so cool and fun. We took one of our tastings along on the tour with us which made it even better. I think this was a fun change from just doing tastings at a bar.
We blogged about it if you want to check out pictures. -

This place has good wines at really low prices. The tasting is free. They have a lot of variety and a large collection of wines. Bought a Syrah and they claimed to be known for their Cab Sav but I wasn't super impressed with it. They do have free cave tours which rocked and was really fun to do. I'd say this winery is worth the visit and trip, but I'm not sure I'd go back again. I'm glad I went though.

Stop #3 on the Paso wine taste. We walked into a nice litle tasting room with a few sandwiches under our arm. They have a nice gazebo outside. But first, we'll need a bottle! Time to taste and perhaps learn a thing about wine from my personal sommelier. We step up to the bar and the tasting begins.
Mrs. KC: Let me show you how this is done. First thing, hold the glass up and examine the wine against the light. You're looking for color and clarity. Just, get a sense of it. OK? Uhh, thick? Thin? Watery? Syrupy? OK? Alright. Now, tip it. What you're doing here is checking for color density as it thins out towards the rim. Uhh, that's gonna tell you how old it is, among other things. It's usually more important with reds. OK? Now, stick your nose in it. Don't be shy, really get your nose in there. Mmm... a little citrus... maybe some strawberry...
[smacks lips]
... passion fruit...
[puts hand up to ear]
... and, oh, there's just like the faintest soupçon of like asparagus and just a flutter of a, like a, nutty Edam cheese...
KC: Wow. When do we get to drink it?
Mrs. KC: Now.
KC: Mmmm that was good.
Mrs. KC: Are you chewing gum? -

heard about the cave tours, so had to try this place. we got a coupon from our hotel that gave a free tasting and discount on any wines we purchased. we got to taste 6 wines and got to pick and choose which wines we wanted to taste. i enjoyed the flexibility of picking my own wines. however, i found the staff to be not as friendly as i expected. the lady was talking to us happily and then asked if we joined any wine clubs recently and we said no. then she stopped chatting with us and just poured our wines and walked away. odd...
part way through our tasting we took a break to go on a cave tour. i enjoyed the tour. the lady was nice and gave a lot of interesting information. i learned about the burning of the barrels which was cool since i've been on a few tours and this was the first that i heard of it. heh.
i ended up buying a muscato, which was nice and refreshing and not overly sweet. -

I think the reds are all very good at this winery, well balanced and full flavored. You get 5 tastings for free in their tasting room. I haven't been there in years, but I don't have any problem recommending this winery. They have moderate priced wines.

Review from Alana H.
I came here a couple of weeks ago while my bf's parents were in town visiting. We specifically came here because we heard that they provide daily public tours of their wine caves. We got there in time for the last tour of the day and our poor tour guide was definitely tired after a long day of giving tours. She took us down to the caves and we got to see the barrels of wine stored and as hot as it was outside it was cool and nice down in the caves. We also saw several areas in the cave where you can have VIP wine tasting and even wedding receptions. During the tour we learned about Eberle's wine making process.
Following the tour we stuck around for a complimentary tasting. There were several white wines that I enjoyed and my bf enjoyed a few of their reds. I really enjoyed our time at Eberle to the point where I am considering becoming a member of their wine club. Among the member benefits are Complimentary VIP Tour & Tasting in Cave Room for members. Our tour guide also told that they include cheeses that compliment the wines in the tasting. I think I'm sold. -

We stopped at Eberle Winery on our way to Santa Barbara and the Hearst Castle. Since I was doing most of the driving, I did not have any wine to taste. I'm giving this place high marks because I really enjoyed the cave tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed his explanation of the wine making process. When we went into the cave, I thought it was going to be this tiny dead-end cave but it is quite an extensive network. We really enjoyed this brief stop and the road trip along the central coast was great fun.

Worth a trip for traditional style CA wines
OK, this is not my favorite place and I wasn't crazy about their wines. However, it's a great place for education on winemaking and the wines are pretty solid if you like the traditional, single varietals most often found in CA. Gary Eberle (heard he has major mood swings and sometimes pulls a tasting bottle from behind the bar and downs it-- now that is entertainment!) is a legend among the Paso Robles pioneers. He's totally old school and understands how to create quality wines. I think you have to stop here just to get a feel for the traditonal styles. They do also have a very nice blend- 3 Easy Pieces - that my husband adores. The Muscat Canelli is a very pleasant dessert wine- nice pear flavor and not too syrupy.
This was a great stop for me as I discover my favorite styles of wine- a good educational experience. Hey- it's free!
BTW- EXCELLENT Tri-tip BBQ with a yummy ginger-wasabi teriyaki sauce you can buy in the salon..... -

Very nice picturesque winery among rolling hills. The tasting room had a mix of snobby and nice pourers. None of the wines stood out as great but they weren't bad either. A big plus was the cave tour which we got from the nice wine pourer. It was just us 3 with us being silly and the chick taking goofy pics of us. The highlight was definitely the cave. It was prepped for a wedding and it looked spectacular. Worth the stop for the cave tour alone! If I recall correctly that tour was free.

I am an absolute fan of this Paso Robles winery. My favorites wines from Eberle are: the Full Boar Red, Côtes-du-Rôbles, Barbera, and Muscat Canelli. In fact, I special ordered the Full Boar Red twice this year.
The building is quite beautiful and inviting, never ostentatious. Plus marks for their customer service and friendliness. When you get there, the bronze namesake will "greet" you at the parking lot. It is impossible to miss it. Take a tour of their caves.
Complimentary wine tasting (up to five free samples). A must see and go to when visiting Paso. -

A great band of seasoned ladies (* * * * /5) were our servers that day. You could tell the workers enjoy each other's company based off their banter. Each server paced the bar to provide commentary and different perspectives on their wines. They even offered boar patch stickers!!
The reds were delicious but needed to breathe before drinking. The two whites in the complementary flight were not worthy of mention but come here for the reds.
The cave tour was informative for the wine production and bottling process but warning: this cave is small, there will be tubes on the floor everywhere you walk, and the ceilings and walls are man made and plastered with grey "popcorn".
Note: There's a 2 hr private cave tasting with cheese, call 2 weeks in advance to reserve! -

What a wonderful place to stop! (also to get out of the heat) We arrived after the last cave tour. Would have been nice to have seen that. They do have free wine tastings. 5 tastings per person. So we shared tastings and did 10 or 12...I think we did all of them by the time we left.
I love their 2007 Mill Road Viognier and 2007 Estate Chardonnay. Hubby loved their 2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. I think we left with 11 bottles.
As and added bonus Gary Eberle was there. -

The tasting is free, and one of the nicer rooms in town.
The wine is good. I've bought the Chardonnay a couple times, and I've purchased their wine in Los Angeles as well.
If you arrive behind a bus you can wait; last time I was served immediately--actually tag teamed by three servers. I think they're used to napa sized crowds.
