The shop is very tiny, but we managed to get a glimpse of the finished products of some of the special order cakes and they were amazing.

The cupcakes we took home were pretty good, great icing that wasnt overly sweet, the cake portions were a little dry but not too bad.

Sugar in West Roxbury still tops my list, but Eat Cake is up on the list.

I love thier little cake car too, looks like it's covered in frosting

Calling on a Friday afternoon at 430 to ask about getting a NAME on a cupcake for a 2 year old's party the next day, Saturday, I was "greeted" by a very, very curt, officious and strident woman who told me that request couldn't be met because they were VERY busy with 2 weddings and other large cupcake orders.  Really?  14 hours prior, the afternoon before, a bakery can't frost a name on a single cupcake? Really?

I went the next morning to get the cakes and asked a pleasant woman who was frosting a childs cake (with an earth mover design, VERY cool) if she could just put an "M" on the cake.  She agreed happily until sure enough, The Rules Authority overheard and said "ugh, we can't do that, we're very busy."

Some people should NOT be customer facing, that woman is one of them.

Here's the deal- you run a store, you make happy stuff for people who are celebrating something, the basis of your business should be to give the customer more than they expect. Period, the end. Just say yes, smile and take the 90 seconds or gosh, 5 minutes, to do something "extra"ordinary.

Charlie Trotter's book on Service should be read by EVERYONE.

The cakes- fine, good, yummy. Though the cupcakes are really a bit contrived. I think a balance of standards would be a good thing along with the superlative creations.

The Rules Lady needs to go to yoga.

I had cupcakes from Eat Cake at two weddings and then decided I better check them out!  These cupcakes are unbelievable!  I especially enjoyed the chocolate with buttercream frosting dipped in chocolate.  The pumpkin with the cinnamon buttercream and a caramel drizzle is out of this world.  Of course, for $2-$3 a cupcake, they better be!
Worth the splurge - especially for special occasions!

Our compromise - since my husband really loved Hilary's cakes and my wallet didn't - was to order a small groom's cake for our reception.  We also asked Hilary to provide the cake for our rehearsal dinner.  I think the rehearsal dinner cake may have been a little bit of a stretch since we wanted a red velvet cake with a Red Sox design.  The cake was good - some of the best red velvet I've had, but the logo was less impressive than I've seen on Hilary's other cakes where her creativity is really free to roam.

The groom's cake, however, was a totally different ballgame.  We chose a cinnamon vanilla cake (think CINNABON in cake form) with teal scrollwork to tie into our theme.  We used the groom's cake as a centerpiece on the sweetheart table and it looked and tasted amazing.

To brides and grooms who are perhaps hindered by cost, such as we were, we found that Hilary was very willing to work with us, even when that meant that we had to totally scale back our order to something smaller so that we could still get some of what we wanted.

Really delicious and moist cupcakes. I have visited a few times now and on top of being amazingly tasty, the cupcakes are very consistent. It is really difficult to find cupcakes that have great flavor and are moist, and Eat Cake delivers! I only take off one star because they are a bit pricey when you are buying more than a couple.

Just picked up cupcakes from their new location on Prince Place. The chocolate cupcake had a great texture, dense and very moist. the buttercream was out of this world - and plenty of it -- i wish there was a tad more cake with the frosting.
We had the chocolate oreo  and chocolate raspberry combos. I wish i had picked up the gooey coconut too.
    Oh well - next time.
** if you are on Facebook  - you can "like" Eat Cake - and get a daily update of which cupcakes she has to offer each day.

~also the location is down about 7 steps, so not  handicap accessible.

I went here a few weeks ago, as I had not noticed it before. I assumed it was new and decided to check it out, despite the fact it was out of the way for where I was heading. I figured it must be good to have such an appealing sign & rave reviews. I was wrong.
I went mid-day. Around 1, at the latest. There were hardly any cupcakes out. I inquired about this and a snobbish girl (she was blonde) replied that they were "running behind." No one else was around, and I didn't think they had been busy, so this was a surprise.
She told me the flavors they did have (coconut, carrot-cake, and something that was chocolate and perhaps peanut butter? Maybe it was red velvet. I ignored it because I'm not a cocoa person.) They had a slew of cakes on a work table, but apparently they weren't getting frosted any time soon. They girl moved lazily, as if she didn't care about her job (thousands are laid off, must I remind you).
I chose coconut, and got carrot cake for my mom. I tried the frosting, which was hardened, and bit into the cake. I wasn't particularly pleased. I asked what other flavors that had in the past and got a rude reply from the girl. I mentioned liking plain vanilla cupcakes with a good oreo-something as a topping, and she told me that they hardly ever made things like that. She then continued to pull out a cell phone and text something. My mother and I (I am in my thirties, she she older), left, with hardly so much as a good-bye. I won't be returning.

Amazing. The ideal cupcake. The buttercream frosting is the real deal -- tastes like the highest quality butter available. The chocolate cupcake and frosting is to die for! The lemon one was awesome with lemon filling and the gooey coconut, oh man! The cake is moist and the combinations of flavors are creative and tantalizing. (Only thing is I would recommend boxes with slots to hold the cupcakes in place.) Definitely gives Tea Cake in San Francisco Bay Area (my ultimate favorite cupcake) a run for its money. $3 cupcake? Worth every penny.

Could be five stars maybe should be. The frosting was five stars and friendly service. I go ta chocolate cupcake with some oustanding frosting and the volume of it was a good amount the size of the cupcake was average and the quality of the cake was good well it was better then average and not the best ever but it was definetly good to very good. This was for three dollars I consider this a reasonable value for the quality a little more so then the quantity. I suppose if the cupcake was a tiny bit biger and the quality of the cake a tiny bit better this would be five stars but its so close to five stars. I still have my favorites concord teacakes in concord, ma and circe grotto on the south shore i think cohasset or somewhere near there. In any case you should go here if in the area. It is small and might be tough to spot but parking is on the street. Check them out. Oh the other five stars made me think do I break the ice well I will and did not because it isn't far from five but it is def right on the edge ok so it is 4.5 stars:-) On my top four list out of numerous places for cupcakes so thats pretty impressive!

I'm in the events business and work with many incredible bakeries. This bakery was recommended by a few people, so I thought I'd try them out for my sister's shower. I called and got the owner (Hilary) on the phone. When asked if it was a good time to talk she replied "as good as it's going to get". Not the most professional way to start a conversation with a new customer, but I went with it. I explained what we were looking to do and said that I'd like to place an order so that we could try her products. She advised that on-line was the best way to do that. Apparently being customer service friendly and taking orders over the phone isn't something she prefers. So, I went on-line and did just as she asked - I sent an email with the invitation so she could match colors and design. It bounced back saying her mailbox was full - not once - three times. I then pieced my email together in her on-line order form and sent it. I got a receipt saying I'd hear back within 24 or 48 hours, but I never did.

After placing a new order at a bakery I work with on a regular basis that does have good customer service, we happened to be in Newburyport weeks later, so we stopped in. I explained how incredibly disappointed I was in the service I had received thus far and the woman working the counter said that she'd pass along the feedback and my contact info to Hilary. It's been 17 days since then and I still haven't heard from her.

Based on my experience, I would never recommend this bakery to my clients, friends or family. In fact, word of mouth is everything, therefore, I'll make sure all are aware of my experience.
