East Village Wines (aka Fung Sing Corp) is a remarkable little wine and liquor store. What's remarkable is the effort they put in to maintaining a wide selection of well-priced wines in a small space. In particular they have a great selection of good under $15 (and under $25) bottles.
Like a boutique wine shop, the staff of this neighborhood joint tastes the wine before they make the decision to stock it. Imran, who seems to be behind the counter about half the time, appears to have tasted nearly every bottle in the store. Describe what you're looking for, your likes and dislikes and what you want to spend to him, and he'll offer you a few informed choices. I expect this kind of service (and selection) from fancier places, but it can be a surprise in a neighborhood shop. Add decent value to the equation and this place is one hell of a wine shop for its small size and lack of pretentiousness.
Here's the bonus: Joining their wine club means that for every ten bottles you buy you get a free bottle (valued at the average of your purchases). The club is free to join.
