There's nothing better than a cold, crisp Bud Light after an afternoon of hockey domination* and the East Vi....

Wait, what? They're giving us the good beers for $4 because we brought 100 people to the bar on a Sunday afternoon?

Screw that Bud Light crap and give me some Ommegong White!

For many years, our little band of hockey-ers had been inhabiting a place you've never heard of the Lower East Side but this year we were kicked out, and up the ladder if you ask me, to Tompkins Square Park, where you'll see us every Sunday afternoon now through October.

But now that we're in the big time, we needed a big time bar for post-game drinking and the East Village Tavern is perfect for that. Great beers on tap and three big flat screens to watch the NCAA Tournament (go Heels!) make this the perfect good-for-sports-fans-and-good-for-drinkers-of-good -beers kind of place. It's clean, the bathrooms are big and nice and there's even a table or two in the back.

Combine that with your bar-standards in Big Buck Hunter and decorative tap handles and you have a winning combination that I look forward to enjoying many times over this summer.

* - Not really. But I did score.**

** - A goal. In the game. Get your head out of the gutter.

These guys can be counted on for an off-the-wall selection of local microbrews, but even if some of the stuff can be pretty vile, there is always a drinkable IPA on tap to please the regulars. Prices are about standard for the area. They are dog-friendly, and my dog actually drags me into their outdoor seating area whenever we walk by there so I now only go near 10th and C when I want a beer :)

There are a few things I dislike about the place. First, the TV right above the bar, tuned to ESPN or some other sports channel. When you sit at the bar, you can't help but look at the TV, and I don't want to spend 90% of my waking hours staring at glowing rectangles. Second, they occasionally get herds of frat boys in there who get loud and obnoxious. You have to know the times to go there. And I'm not telling you what they are!

4 stars for afternoons, negative 80 stars (is that possible?) on saturday nights.

The first time I went here, I was psyched by the good beer selection and chill vibe.  Figured I'd end up back there many times.

Last night moronic DJ overdriving the speakers beyond distortion (must suck to be a bartender there -- deafness is imminent), AWFUL music (how much britney can you play at a beer bar?), terrible crowd.  We lasted about 45 seconds.

Sadly, this experience makes me never want to return.

This place is a great bar to start off the evening or just sit and talk on a weekday. When I have friends in town, I usually take them here for a while to drink and talk earlier in the evening before we move on.

I started going here over the winter and even on weekend it wasn't packed. I've been a few times recently and the crowd has picked up. They have a few tables outdoors and on week nights I've been able to get a seat. The bartenders are always cool and will let you sample the beers and, if you stay a while, will almost always give you a few rounds.

They have 16 (I think) American micro-brews on tap, which they rotate monthly. There's almost always something worth trying. Most beers are $6.

For a while, I thought this place was the most under rated bar in the east village, but it seems business has been picking up for them lately, so maybe it's not unknown anymore.

This place is alright by me! They have a pretty good variety of beers to choose from and the crowd was chill. Another bonus was the DJ, who played a good mix of different tunes which kept us all singing along. Bottom Line- EVT is worth the stop if you're in the area.

This place gets the job done.  It's a no-frills bar with a no-frills bartender, serving up regular drinks and beers.  The bartender is quick to show off his NYC sarcasm and wit in a way that you just have to grin at.  Outdoor seating for when the temperature cooperates.

A few months ago, I wrote a not-so-favorable review of East Village Tavern because despite that they were touted for their "Pajama Brunch" here on Yelp, I arrived there on a cold Sunday afternoon in December with a friend in full pajama regalia (ok, it was really just sweats), only to find three lonely men sitting at the bar, drinking beer, eyes transfixed on the football game. Not a brunch menu in sight.

When I queried the bartender, I was told that they'd stopped brunch "for the duration of the football season," which I must admit, I thought was one of the most retarded things I'd ever heard. Across the street, The Sunburnt Cow was somehow managing to have the football game on AND serve brunch (which, because of the crowds, entailed a 45 minute wait), all at the same time. Remarkable, I know. One restaurant, brunch on plates and football on TV, business pouring out the door; the other, unable to multi-task and three lonely dudes sipping beer.

Of course, I could not for the life of me figure out what the rationale behind this might be, and I reflected my annoyance in my review, including my observation that this was short-sighted and basically stupid, not to mention that having to endure hauling ass over to Avenue C and 10th on a cold wintry Sunday was no treat to begin with.

Soon after I wrote this review, I was contacted by the owner (I gather, at least), who apologized profusely, admitted it was indeed short-sighted and promised there would be a limited brunch menu "immediately" to be followed by the full version in January once had a chance to confer with his chef.

Being the kind of guy I am (yes, I am damn fabulous), I wrote back to thank him for responding and told him I'd pull my review with the expectation that the situation would soon be remedied. I did just that. In hindsight, I should have left my review up pending the changes, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I toldja, I'm fabulous.

Fast forward to late February; stopped in again, because surely they'd have the full brunch menu in effect by now (if not the limited one that was supposed to start in December), right? No dice. No brunch. No nada. Same empty bar. Same ass-haul to Avenue C. I wrote back to the owner asking what happened and not surprisingly, I got no answer back. At first I considered stalking them like a creepy weirdo, but in the end, I let it go.

Fast forward again to today, April 5. Being the gorgeous Spring day it was, I headed down Avenue C with friends intending to go to Esperanto for brunch. Of course, they had a pool of people waiting on the sidewalk to get in and a thirty minute wait; Sunburnt Cow was jamming as usual, but to my complete and utter surprise I noticed that lo and behold, EVT seemed to have people sitting outside eating what appeared to be... what is it... ohymgod... BRUNCH?!?

No. Freakin'. Way.
Yes. Freakin'. Way.

Despite my previous experiences twice trying and twice being denied, with the waiting options for Esperanto and Sunburnt Cow upwards of forty five minutes, we opted in.

It wasn't all bad, I'll say, but it wasn't very good either:

1. The steak, egg and cheese "hero" was not a hero at all, but was on some sort of cibatta or other bread, very un-hero like, and I could not taste any cheese in it at all. It was actually reasonably bland, but I'll give it inoffensive. The fries were luke-warm and clammy.

2. We ordered some french toast for the table that I would classify as burnt.

3. Our waitress was extremely overburdened, but I'm giving her slack for that because apparently they weren't expecting the crowd they ended up with. i gotta say, though, with the food the way it is, it's not likely to last. She was really trying and I give her props for grace under pressure.  She wasn't getting a ton of support. Basics were missing like salt and pepper on the table, and she had to make separate trips to supply us with those and ketchup AND silverware AND coffee, which could easily have been managed by bus staff, making her job a lot easier.

4.They served me a mimosa ON THE ROCKS. This is a cardinal sin. Champagne should never EVER be poured over ice. EVER. Did I mention EVER? Refrigerate your OJ and champagne and get some champagne glasses. Seriously.

5. The band they had playing was a decent touch, but didn't really make up for the shortcomings of the food and that mimosa.

This place needs work, but for me, now that baseball season has started, it's three strikes, you're out. Two stars and I'm being kind.

Large selection of good beer on tap for prices that won't make you whimper.
Tasty bar eats.
Friendly staff (even the one who gently taunted me for answering "um...Ommegong...omgbeer!" after a couple of pints).
Seriously spacious bathrooms which are clean.
Welcoming to a mass of sweaty street hockey players on a Sunday evening. And willing to continue to host us throughout the season.

Good bar. Good times.

I have rarely found a place with such a extensive variety of beers, a variety that they do keep up-to-date.  I have become especially fond of the hand-pumped cask ale.  I highly recommend that for sure.

The menu is a classy upgrade of traditional bar fare and comfort foods, with a welcome gormet flair.

The place is cozy, clean, and the bartenders I've met are laid back and friendly.

My friends and I have been doing a bi-weekly Thursday Happy Hour meet up for the past few years and were looking for some place new to try that meets our requirements:

Cask beers on tap
Full bar
Ample seating
Food

This kinda limits our options because it's tough to find a place that has all four.  Blind Tiger lacks the full bar and ample seating...DBA lacks the food.  East Village Tavern, however, has all four!  We got there at 7 and the place started out pretty empty and low-key, which meant we were able to get an entire bench/table to ourselves.  We ordered a round of drinks, some food, and then watched the night progress as follows:

7:30PM - Fries are served....we devour them and order more food.  There's one other table of people.  The jukebox is quietly playing 80's rock.

8:00PM - Afterwork crowd has made it's way over...not your typical afterwork douchebag crowd though, just groups of people [all ages, races, sexes, styles] looking to hang out and drink.  The volume in the bar raises exponentially.  Our food arrives and it is miles above your typical bar food fare - delicious and cheap!

8:30PM - A group of girls have taken over the jukebox and have selected every hip-hop song from the late 80's to early 90's.  This pleases a large selection of people.  Drunken dancing commences.  It's tough to hear anything other than people yelling the lyrics to "Poison."  My British friend is engrossed in a game of Big Buck Hunter.

9:00PM - The bar is pretty packed...there's a small line for the 3 bathroom stalls.  It's loud, but everyone is friendly/happy.

9:30PM - Drunk enough off of cheap cider to make the decision to NOT go home and head to Keybar instead.

Can't wait to go back and do it all over again!

I know it's been a good Sunday when I'm still in my pajamas at 5 pm.  It's a feat that not all can manage and only few can perfect.  Some of you get sucked into being all motivated and going out to do stuff and feel that if you are going to show your face to the world, you might as well be smartly dressed while you're doing it.   I take the stance that I'm *very* well dressed every other day (and night) of the week so I hereby declare Sundays as Pajamas Day.

As such, I declare that Pajamas Day does not mean that one should hide inside all day watching reruns and eating leftovers from Saturday night's take out.  Get out in the world.  Get some fresh air, eat a huge tasty and very inexpensive brunch while watching the Italy vs. Spain football game.

If your pj's consist of little more than underwear I will encourage you to *cover up*,  then just add some shoes and head over to East Village Tavern.  Don't worry!  They won't scoff at you for being in your jams at 2 in the afternoon, cause the staff wears their pj's all day too!

I know, I know, the last thing we all need is encouragement to be lazy and not get dressed in the morning.  But East Village Tavern is saying it's OK!  You work hard.  You deserve a day off.  Come eat brunch with us, we'll give you a bloody mary or mimosa with your breakfast, offer 4$ drink specials all day and let you watch anything you want on our many flat screens.

It's like a sirens call.  How can you not go?  I mean geez,  you don't even have to get dressed!

I've checked out my new neighborhood bar on 10th and C and believe that it deserves some East Village support. The bar has a lot of flat screens and wood throughout which is nice. The whole front of the bar opens up to the outside which allows a nice breeze in on days like today (perfect day). They have 16 taps that the rotate regularly with a wide variety of beers (dogfish head 90 minute, old rasputin imperial stout etc...).

They have a great happy hour from 4-7p.m. that includes $3 any draught beer which is impossible to beat; not to mention the bartenders are badass and will hook you up if you don't suck at life. I haven't tried the food mainly because I am broke and concentrating on drinking.

So get in here and enjoy a cold beer with the great people of the East Village Tavern.

Wandering around the E. Village on a blustery winter night looking for a new place to drink, fate happen to deliver us the answer in the form of a free drink coupon. Never one to turn down free drinks, I decided to give this place a try. They have an extensive selection of craft beers on tap. Most drinks are below $10 so it won't make a dent in the wallet unless you're a hardcore boozer. I had to mention the bathrooms in this place because they are spacey and clean, such a hard combination to find in this neighborhood.

So, EVT changed chefs / menus recently. They definitely have switched to more traditional "bar fare". They kept the adult grilled cheese, YAY!, but traded some of their more "adult" food options for things like wings, nachos and cheesesteaks. I gotta say, I was really impressed by how things were before, but I can understand that if it wasn't working for them overall, it was time for a change. Got the calamari, and it was kind of more breading than octopus, so I'd suggest shying away from that. Beer selection has remained the same and the atmosphere is great. Still really like this place, still not the best if you're a veg, but overall, I'm a fan!

As a fan of craft beers, I'd been meaning to stop by this place for some time. Finally made it over on a Friday night around 1am after a long day of work. Not at all the scene I expected to find for a beer bar on Ave C - drunk 30-somethings with popped collars and way too much hair product bitching about the commute on the LIRR. When they weren't screaming Doors lyrics and pounding on the bar (and I don't mean one person, seriously, everyone around us), they were harassing the bartender. Speaking of her, she barely appeared to be of legal drinking age herself. At first I thought she looked scared. Then, after waiting more than five minutes for her to figure out the change from my $20 bill, I realized she was totally wasted. And not just her - the other bartender and some other guy hanging out behind the bar were right there with her. Once they all got together behind the bar to do a round of Car Bombs, we decided it was time to split.

The beer selection is great, though, and the drinks tasted fresh and cold.

I won't be going back.

the first thing i noticed about this place is how nice their outdoor seating.  there was no hostess in sight, but the bartender was great about letting the 7 of us arrange ourselves around a huge table outside on a lovely friday evening.  the food was good, especially the crab dip.  their beer selection is decent, and the service was good despite the fairly big (but not busting out of the seams) crowd.  i wasn't a fan of the interior of the bar, but well worth it if you score an outside table!

Yeah, it's a pretty good happy hour but it's not really ALL beers on tap are $3...Dogfish Head 90 min IPA is $3.50, but who cares, it's good still anyways.Great selection of beer and the sliders weren't too shabby either. Wish more of the TV screens were behind the bar or something, 'cuz there really is only one you could really see if you sit at the bar (poor planning eh?). Anyways, it's a little bit far and out of the way for me to hit up for happy hour, but if I'm over there, might as well have 3or 4 beers and then roll over to Zum Schneider for some schnitzel.

The overall experience, including working on my tan and the nice corner patio, while sipping away on screwdrivers, should have warranted a higher rating, but this restaurant has a couple fatal flaws to it. The steak and egg sandwich i ordered was respectable, though slightly pricy at $9 without a side of homefries. The drinks are relatively stiff, always an appreciated move after a night of fun, and reasonably priced at $4 (side note.... do not order a white Russian, rather order "the dude", here a white Russian is only Kahula and milk, and costs $7) So based on this, I suppose a 4 star could be argued for. However, the service is pretty shotty, hence a downward 1 star, now were at 3. And for the final straw, just so i could be objective in my brunch comparisons, i had to order a nice little side plate of bacon... and what do you know.... at $3 a plate they serve up 2 slices of flaccid greasy bacon. This does not make me happy. If you just want a sandwich and a drink this place is ok, if you want anything better i suggest you continue walking down the street to Essex, wait in line and satisfy that Sunday brunch craving the right way.

i stumbled onto this place randomly and have come back a few times.  it's kind of in a weird location and never too exciting, but bring some friends and you'll get a decent, rotating beer selection and an interesting mix of people that were brave (and smart) enough to venture above the stupidity whirlwind that is the east side of 4th-8th St / Ave C.   ahh, relief.

A hidden gem on an unassuming street corner.  A place for foodies and craft beer connoisseurs.  16 of the finest American craft brews on tap and in rotation.  That means there are 3 kegs of each and then they are replaced with other selections.  A variety to suit all true beer enthusiasts.  Seasonal beers and a seasonal food selection.  A high end bar food menu that is really more the offerings of a gastropub than a tavern.  The chef offers a constantly revolving fresh seasonal menu of tasty small plates, soups, salads, and sandwiches that go perfectly with the beer on tap.  The shrimp stuffed mushrooms with a citrus balsamic reduction were definitely a cut above usual pub fare!  Extraordinary hospitality.  Super friendly staff.  Comfortable, welcoming, come as  you are atmosphere.  Diverse crowd.  Big Buck Hunter, pinball, jukebox full of favorites.  What more could you ask for?  If you appreciate really good beer and really good food, this place is for you.
