I checked out the East Village Farmer's Market at noon on Saturday.  Since it is fairly new I wasn't anticipating a few blocks stretch of vendors.  Instead it was a small, quaint market with a jazz musician entertaining those passing by.  The standard vendors were in attendance: fresh produce, fresh flowers, a pastry guy selling everything strawberry, one or two jewelry vendors (one of which sold necklaces/bracelets made from recycled paper from a village in Uganda), a Pacific Island Grill, and a few apparel vendors.

I feel like the East Village Farmer's Market has great potential.  I left feeling glad that there is a new Farmer's Market in town, but a little unfulfilled because it really only took 5 minutes to make my rounds. However, its redemptive qualities, which I'm sure with time and word-of-mouth, will allow it to grow and showcase more of San Diego's diversity and mirthful spirit.  I will definitely go back again to see its evolution...

I wake up this morning and take my pup out to be walked to see the street shut down and people setting up the farmer's market, doh! I totally forgot about the brand new farmer's market in East Village!

The Farmer's Market sits on 8Th ave. between G & Market. 25 vendors are expected to show up, and more could easily be on the way. As of this morning they had two fruit stands (one with organic fruit), a couple places to get food, a flower stand, some jewelry stands, and a doggy food stand.

Since it's the first market it's obviously pretty small and only takes up about half the street, but it easily has growing room.

... and the East Village gets a little more awesome and diverse

I'm definitely a fan of farmer's markets.  But I would HARDLY call this a farmer's market. I appreciate them trying to sell their stuff and make an honest living.  This "farmers" market didn't have much fresh produce or stuff that you'd find from farmer's.  They close the entire block of 8th street between G & Market.  The vendors don't even take up half of the block.  So an entire half block of parking, is wasted.  There's a hostel on that block and they could benefit from the half block of parking, if they would allow it.  I mean really...do you need an entire city block for 5 vendors? I hardly think so. As for this supposed jazz singer.  He's not bad, but I've definitely heard better.
Like I said, I appreciate people trying to make an honest living, but seriously...close it down or make it bigger! The J street Farmer's Market on Sunday's is definitely MUCH more exciting.
