A good little bookstore with a slightly subpar but interesting selection. Not interesting in the sense of "oh, here's a Reader's Digest from 1929 with funny ads" but in the sense of "I go to a lot of used bookstores, and I rarely see these books, and they're not bad."
This may partly explain the large signage begging for book collections or book donations.
The browsing experience isn't too bad. The aisles are narrow, but surprisingly comfortable, unlike a lot of other Manhattan bookstores.
The good: it's open late, the staff is friendly, there are some gems in the midst of the crap (i.e. I found the brand new Loorie Moore book there hardcover for $7).
The bad: there's a fair amount of crap that one just has to sift through to get to the good stuff; generally, the pries are a bit higher than I would like for a used book store (i.e. I'm not paying $8 or $9 for a used paperback...)
It's ok. Tiny store, dig to find good stuff
Oh how I miss this place! I don't go as often as I used to but I could spend hours here wandering through the shelves. It's actually not that big of a store, but there is a lot to peruse. They have a bit of everything and it's much more orderly than the Strand which is chaos and gives me headaches if I'm not in the mood. This place is like a respite from chaos, digestible, with a good selection and great deals. They have sticker specials too and the little outdoor sort of cubby in the back has all sorts of stuff to look at...watch out for mosquitos in the summer though. One more thing is that they don't take credit for purchases less than $20 or so. They are a small store so you have to understand. Also they open pretty late.
I was just hanging around the area and I loved this store.
They had really good art books, and replicas too.
The stuff they have made me want to spend so much money that I had to leave as soon as possible.
My favorite used book store in the city.
I found a copy of Jnaeshwar's Gita here, and I had been looking for it for a while. It was like, six bucks. It was a thrilling discovery.
I later gave it to a teacher of mine, who I greatly respect. She was in my house, and she saw the book, and her jaw dropped, and asked
"Where did you get this?"
I felt super cool and smiled and nodded, and didn't tell her.
But I gave her the book.
So that's East Village Books for you. The book shop that has the books that really impress the people you really respect.
My all time favorite used book store.
Amazing discoveries await inside this late night treasure chest.
This is my local book store. The prices are great and there is always nice old timey music playing. I always find something I didnt know existed that I cant live without. They open in the afternoon and stay open late.
Yet another feather in the East Village's cap. I have bought some great art books here very inexpensively and I like the small, neighborhoodish feel. It always makes me feel a little sad/nostalgic for a pre-Barnes and Noble time, when more of small, independent book shops existed. It's nice to be able to browse and not have to maneuver around people sitting on the floor with their Frappucinos.
The East Village bookstore has a very good selection of books. Dig around long enough and you can find some quirky finds for cheap prices. The cd selection and prices are so so.
There's a wide selection crammed into a small space, rotating monthly sales and, even though they seem to have crept up a little as of late, still some excellent prices for used books. I manage to walk out with something nearly every time I visit, which -- trust me -- is often.
Definitely my favorite used book store. I prefer them to be a bit smaller and more intimate- Strand scares me. This place is reasonably priced- especially when you find things on clearance in the backyard. Always a good selection, always comfortable.
Decent priced books in a small intimate setting. You're not going to find EVERYTHING you want, but hey, it's a used book store. Come looking for nothing in mind, and you just might find something amazing for a bargain.
small and smelly, half underground, with wobbly chairs to sit on. pretty decent used books prices, interesting selection, from witchcraft to the holy bible to classic literature to contemporary bestsellers. it's also on a quiet block, which is nice. i didn't even realize they sold records of any kind, since i was so absorbed in their book selection. will have to go back.
