I had a few drinks at the bar downstairs for happy hour on a Friday. Everything was fine and as it should be. No surprises.
As for the Sunday brunch upstairs, I absolutely loved the ambiance and the live jazz band. The food was all right, didn't blow me away, and can probably be compared to good diner fare. Then again, it is not expensive and your first cocktail is free and second half price. For about $60 for three people I was very satisfied.
Oh, and just a head's up, this place is LGBT-oriented, without being an official gay bar. It's a little confusing and I, normally quite observient, needed a few obvious hints to figure it out.
3.5 stars.
I came for dinner with a group of girlfriends. Had a martini at the bar downstairs - the bartender was chill, played Top 40's - and they have Plymouth Gin! It was pouring outside, and people were dropping in for a drink and some shelter. It made for interesting eavesdropping :)
My seared tuna entree arrived rare as ordered, and I just about scarfed it down. The portion was on the small side, but hey - it's fish. I would come back again. Reliable casual American fare in the commercial heart of Chelsea!
This is my new favorite place to go on Saturday afternoon for brunch! So, I've been there a couple of times now with my other half, and every time, we have a great time and the food is fantastic! I highly recommend the monte cristo (as was recommended to me by the bartender). We usually sit at the bar and really enjoy chatting with the bartender, Whitney. She rocks!
Oh, and the movie theater is right next door in case you want to kill some time before going to see a movie.
There's nothing to write home about this place. I didn't have a poor experience, but it was nothing to rave about. I went with a group of friends on Saturday and walked out somewhat dissappointed and I'm not quite sure why. The food was decent, however it was not as cheap as everyone has made it out to be. I did have the French Onion soup to start and I must say that it was delicious. If you're looking for a restaurant with a great atmosphere and vibe, this is not the place. Seems to have a bit of an older, conservative crowd....not what I was expecting especially in Chelsea of all neighborhoods. Service was decent and the staff was friendly, but I just wasn't blown away with the restaurant. Would I go back? Possibly, but it wouldn't be at the top of my list.
Some friends of mine and I were looking for a good place to have a bite to eat and some prosecco after attending an art reception at the Marlborough in Chelsea. After going to 5 pack to the gills bars, I mentioned East of Eight. We got a great table on the second floor, had some teriffic food with exellent service, and had a great time overall. My friends still mention it months later.
OK, here goes. I read some real nasty reviews here about EofE and I feel I need to chime in and temper the criticisms. We actually ate there tonight for about the umpteenth time. And, no, I do not eat Alpo.
Tonight we both had the "Knife and Fork" fried chicken. What we got is an entire half chicken with most of the bones removed, lightly breaded and deep fried to crispy and totally devoid of excessive grease. See, my Friends, fried foods are not all oil soaked crap. The seasoning was very subtle, so you could actually taste the chicken. Even the white meat, which I usually find a bit dry, was juicy and flavorful. You could tell it was prepared to order, served pipping hot and there was no "steam table" action here. The garlic mashed potatoes were seasoned with a very subtle dose of garlic (these things are usually so full of garlic, you can't taste the potato).
I have, on other occasions, had the rack of lamb, good and done rare as requested. I have often had dessert, mainly the fruit crisps, which I didn't have room for tonight after the "chickenzilla" portion we were served. I loved the hot friut crisp, with whipped cream. The Absolute martini I ordered was very dry, big and only ten dollars. The wine list has lots of bottles in the 24-30 dollar range.
I'm always sorry to hear when someone says the food was terrible since, after about ten years of eating here, I have never really had a bad meal. I never went for brunch, so I can't comment on that except to say, in my humble opinion, brunch sucks almost everywhere, since the main focus is always on the alcohol and not the food.
I'm not a gourmet or a professional food critic, and I actually like to cook like Rachel Ray rather than Julia Child. But I do know food and, according to my friends and family, I cook better than most restaurants. My assessment of EofE is that we are not talking Bouley food or Nobu prices here, we are talking about decent food at a reasonable price with a great ambiance in the garden.
So, just ignore the really bad reviews here, and give it a try. If you don't like it, send it back and, after all is said and done, you are still disappointed, don't go back. Remember that none of the Yelpers I have met so far are master chefs, so take the reviews with a grain of salt, both pro and con.
For the person who's girlfriend vomited after her dinner here, I would try to think about where you had lunch since most food illnesses take from 8 to 24 hours to manifest themselves. I'm not trying to be funny here but, just remember, most really rotten experiences in restaurants really are flukes., No place could stay in business as long as this old standby without having something going for it.
Thanks for listening, now I need a drink.

More like East of Awesome!
There aren't a ton of affordable, comfortable, and non-sceney places in Chelsea that do good drinks and good food. Or if there are, I have yet to discover them (a little help, please?).
I've been to East of Eighth for drinks several times and they have a cozy bar area and reasonably priced drinks, and a couple of benches out front if you want to enjoy a cigarette while imbibing. The space is pretty basic, but there's always decent music playing (from what I can remember, lots of Brit pop) and the staff is friendly.
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of eating in the back garden for the first time. The menu is ecclectic, with Italian and Asian dishes thrown into the mix, and there's a great pre-theater menu that offers 3 courses for $17.95 from 4:30 - 6:45pm. I had the pork dumplings, salmon with pesto risotto, and apple/cranberry crisp. All delicious, as was the bottle of Syrah my dining partner and I shared. The waiter was good-natured and gave us plenty of time to linger in the lovely garden space after we finished eating, instead of plunking down the check the second the plates get cleared the way *some* restaurants will do [*cough*Gascogne*cough*].
East of Eighth is all-around pleasant and a lovely casual place to grab a bite and/or drink. While I wish there were more establishments like this in the area, part of me is glad there isn't, because they'e gonna be getting repeat business from me.

In 2 words, NOT GOOD. The crabcakes where fishy and devoid of flavor. The steak was completely over cooked and didn't come with the sauce as listed on the menu. The fries were greasy and the service was non existent. Go elsewhere!
I really wanted to like it. I did! My first brunch experience in Chelsea. Was meeting a new friend. Wanted to be impressive.
The menu looks awesome. Everything sounded good. I went with the crabcakes benedict and my friend went with the guacamole benedict (a little weird, but ok). When they arrived, I was less impressed. My crabcakes were DRYYYY. I broke the yolks, hoping to fix it a little, but the yolks were nearly solid. On top of that the sauce was very vinegary and unpleasant. I'm sure being slightly hungover didn't help. My friend said her benedict was just OK.
I'm willing to give them another chance, because the menu looked really good and maybe it was just a fluke. But I'm not going out of my way to go there again.
OHHHH, I get it now! This place really is, literally, east of 8th Avenue, a-ha! Nice appropriate name!
I've been here twice, and both times I ordered the penne a la vodka. I ordered it both times because, let's face it, I'm boring. And so you know, I always judge a place by the quality of their penne a la vodka. It's such an easy dish to put out, that if the restaurant can't whip up a good concoction of it, it gets a major FAIL (I've always wanted to use a FAIL in a sentence and now I have - you go girl).
And yes, the penne vodka was quite good. And while the chicken tends to be cut on the small side, it's still enough to fill me up by the end of the meal.
The service is always great and enthusiastic. And the best part is that last time we were there, on the music heard overhead "I Want It That Way" by Backstreet Boys came on, and our table started singing along. Pure pop music at it's most bliss!

Upstairs dining room has huge windows which provide a lovely view of Ricky's and Boston Market across the street. People KILL for this sort of view in NYC. It was obviously a townhouse/brownstone in a former life.
They have a decent choice of different kinds of foods; sandwiches, salads, pastas. It is, shall we say, continental. Ah yes. I'd really like to write something interesting about this place, but uh, it's not that interesting.
I was here on a Friday for lunch and it kind of looked like the old age home commissary's dishwasher broke and they all came to East of Eighth.
That said, my Penna ala Vodka was tasty, although the grilled chicken that was supposed to be part of it was mostly microscopic. Mom had a crab cake sandwich, and my brother had a burg. Both enjoyed theirs.
If this isn't the most FREAKIN' BORING REVIEW I'VE EVER WRITTEN, I don't know what is.
Thanks, move along.

In a nutshell, cute place, good food, so-so service. I came here with my family on Mothers Day, which may explain the poor service. Our waiter was quick to take our orders, but I only remember him coming back once at the end of our meal to give us the check.
The brunch menu had everything from omelets, to salads to burgers. I had the chicken, spinach and tomato frittata with a mimosa. Pretty standard brunch fare at a reasonable price. They also give you a basket of bread and corn muffins, which were pretty yummy.
Not sure it was worth the trip so "far" west (I am an East Village gal), but good place for brunch if you're in the neighborhood.
I went here for brunch with a friend while I was in town. The food was good. I had an omelette with spinach and tomatoes, which had the potential to be watery from both vegetables, but it wasn't. Good stuff. My friend had the guacamole benedict, which she said she enjoyed. The home fries were slightly oily for my taste, and my friend's. The brunch was fixed price at $14.95 and included a coffee and bar drink (mimosa or bloody mary) with the second bar drink half price. Ohh, and the muffins and bread basket was yummy.
It wasn't busy when we were there. No wait, a decent crowd, but not packed. The decor was nice, but the music was...odd. At one point, it was the Star Wars theme, or so we thought.
The wait staff was very attentive to our table, which made for a pleasant dining experience, and the cost all the more bearable.
I like this place! It's just a no fuss kinda place. I remember going here almost 7 years ago where me and my boarding school friends caught up and got trashed until 4am! So when I walked by it, I told the girls i was with-this is perfect for a quick drink!
And it was-its low key, the drinks are strong, and the bar tender is super nice. It's small-we got lucky the bar was kinda empty.
If you are waiting for your movie show at the clearview theater-grab a drink here you'll have a good time. I haven't tried food-but I don't think I will the review for food look terrible! (OH NO!!!)
Guess they really can't mess up a martini! Although I know some places that seriously can!
The entrance is on the lower level, where the bar is. I don't know what people could think is so great about the ambiance. I was there on a Friday night and it was mostly populated by overweight, greasy, middle-aged men.
The decor in the upstairs restaurant area was bland and generic, the carpet smelled like feet, and it was eerily quiet despite the busy bar scene downstairs.
There was nothing noteworthy about the food. Some of the menu items look promising but most are tragically overplayed (chicken panini, caesar salad, grilled salmon). I shouldn't have bothered with dessert after the disappointing entrées; a heaping scoop of Ben & Jerry's would have been more satisfying than my flavorless chocolate and espresso cream roulade.
Granted this 8th Ave area is kind of a dead zone for cuisine, but I would gladly walk a few blocks to get somewhere better. Will not be coming back.
I thought it was impossible to eat a quality meal with fab ambiance for cheap in NYC. I was wrong!
I was in the neighborhood for a haircut with my fabulous stylist, Michael. I looked for a nearby restaurant on yelp. I was pleasantly surprised by the food and the service.
Since Michael had already given me a few glasses of champagne, I decided to order another glass while I was here. It was the only bad choice of the evening. Luckily, my fantastic server took it off the bill when I mentioned that I didn't like it.
I don't live in NYC so I won't be a regular. However, I do recommend!

I can only tell you about the horrible night we had here in list form:
Seated next to the smelly kitchen vent for no reason
Served a crappy frozen pizza (wood oven my ass) and bland calamari
Rained on (their outdoor patio can't handle rain, apparently)
Moved upstairs by the surly manager
Ignored for 30 minutes, often by the same manager
Presented with a check for the full amount of our bill
Don't do it! DON'T DO IT!
I've passed by this place a hundred times and always thought it had a funky vibe, especially at night, and might be a good place to eat.
I finally went there for lunch with coworkers and I don't know if I was let down by my preconceived idea of a fantastic dining experience, or if it really wasn't all the great.
The service for lack of a better word was bizarre - there was one waiter for the entire second floor and his "friendly" banter came across as creepy and inappropriate. However, the food came out fast, hot and everyone's order was correct.
I'd have to say the food was decent - but I'm not convinced I'd go back and order the same thing. Everyone else at my table really enjoyed what they ordered, so maybe I'll erase today and give it a second shot.

The food is okay. The service is good. The decor is vivid and the bathroom is located downstairs, which is an inconvenience to patrons. I usually don't drink at breakfast unless it's a Mimosa. I came here for a breakfast date, thus I have no comment how East of Eighth is for lunch or dinner. My date went sour as he made an insulting and offensive mockery of my Chinese name.
Their web site (http://www.eastofeight...) is not working.

I guess we're one of the unlucky people to have bad service here, but at least the food was good. Our server was either new to the whole serving thing or just completely clueless. The guy had no listening skills whatsoever. My friend ordered an apetizer (mozarella) and an entre (pork chops) and the server completely missed the pork chops and kept asking him if he wanted the apetizer as an entre! In addition to bad listening skills, drink refills were non existant and after our food was dropped off, the server never came back to ask us how everything was or if we needed anything else.
The food was halfway decent. I really liked the flavor of the pork chops, but the cut of the meat left a little bit to be desired. If they had a less fatty cut of pork chop, it would have been much better, but it was really difficult to chew through all the fat on the pork chop. My friend had some pasta with fish and he really loved it. As for my other friend who had the mozerella as an entre, it was pretty good as well, but not enough food so he had to actually order his entre after he had the apetizer since the guy just couldn't listen.
All in all, this place is ok, it was $90 bucks for dinner for 3, about the average in NYC I guess. The cocktails are $10 bucks each. I'd probably look elsewhere next time in NYC, there are so many places to eat there.
Pretty great dining experience, overall! The food was fantastic! so soo yummy! We went for dinner on a Saturday at 6:30 and it didn't seem crowded, but there was a private party upstairs so they said they wouldn't be able to seat us for another 25 minutes or so. We opted to eat in the lounge since we were in a bit of a hurry.
After reviewing the varied options on the menu - all of which looked delicious - I gave our orders to the bartender. If we wanted more water, we just went up the bartender for more! We didn't get a basket of bread or any other waiter service except for a kitchen staffer bringing us our entrees very speedily! Our food was wonderfully prepared: pineapple, ham, and brie salad, the Harvest Selection, and the grilled salmon.
This has a link to some of the menu options: http://www.menupages.c...
I'm excited to go back sometime for their Dinner at Dusk, which I think is $18 for a 3 course meal between Sundays-Thursdays. I loved that it's located next to the Chelsea Theaters for a pre-movie dinner.
If they knew what they were doing, the back garden would be great for groups.
Unfortunately they seemed ill-prepared to handle the wedding brunch of 25-30 folks that had been planned in advance. I'm sure somebody knew we were coming - just not the kitchen or waiter.
The party was to be from 12-2pm. Folks arrived at 12. Orders were taken over an hour later. Food arrived around 1:45. Fortunately they didn't try to kick us out at 2 or we'd have set the place on fire.
The "medium" burgers were heat-lamped to death, presumably as they waited for the omelets and Benedicts to come out. On the bright side, water was refilled punctually so no one died of dehydration. Other than that - not particularly impressed.

The decor is amazing. Dimly lit yet sophisticated. A great after-movie spot or before-movie spot. Unfortunately, my friends and I went straight for Star Lounge, which has open V2 vodka on Fridays, so there was no time for a movie---only time for vodka!
The food was very good. I recommend sharing the goat cheese and walnut stuffed red peppers over top basil leaves and balsamic vinaigrette.
I order the salmon with rice and vegetables---so good.
East of Eighth's service is excellent and the food is good, but plan to spend money. Our check was like ninety dollars; so don't except Boston Market prices.

Even though the front room seemed crazy busy, we were escorted to the back garden and found it to be wonderfully peaceful and relaxing. Despite the heat, sitting next to the koi pond (with the cutest little Buddha statue!) somehow made the evening seem tolerable. The host was quite nice, and our waiter was incredibly nice and sweet...but more on him later.
East of Eighth has an eclectic menu--some seafood here, some pasta dishes there, with a whole page of tapas to completely befuddle your label maker. My friend (a man with a bottomless stomach) and I decided to have a go at the tapas, while our two meal mates ordered entrees.
As I mentioned, my tapas friend can eat and eat--he's usually the person all of the girls push their half-full plates to at the end of the meal. So we decided to order 6 plates of tapas, knowing that tapas are usually about three bites big. Not here!! Of what we ordered the crab cakes (2 pieces) were the only thing remotely representing the usual tapas size. Everything else--the calamari, Oaxacan guacamole, lamb chops, and pecan-crusted shrimp (6 large shrimp) were definitely appetizer-sized! A great deal too, with each plate costing between $6-$8. And the food...quite good!
The calamari was pretty typical, but the dipping sauce was a great blend of smoky and spicy. The guacamole and blue corn chips (what made it Oaxacan, I'm not sure) was similarly good, albeit typical. The shrimp was fantastic--the pecan crusting definitely complimented the shrimp and it was cooked just right (don't you hate overcooked shrimp?). My friend had to warm up to the lamb, but he got to liking it. The crab was the only thing I didn't care for--the crab meat wasn't stellar and it was way too breaded.
I also had the walnut arugula salad with Gorgonzola--that was incredible! The salad was just the right size with the right blend of walnuts, apple, and arugula. And the Gorgonzola "garlic bread" was heavenly.
The server was so considerate too. The table was a bit small for all the food, but he made sure that everything was made and delivered to the table in a staggered manner, so we were never long without fresh "tapas" (I should call them tapatizers!). He was definitely one of the better servers I've had in a while. The 4 of us had a lovely summer garden dinner! I would definitely return--but this time get *way* fewer tapas! Even my bottomless-stomached friend was overstuffed when we were done!

We love to stop here for a beer (Hoegaarden on tap, Stella too...) or a cocktail in the afternoon before dinner.
As previously mentioned, the people watching is five star.
As for the food, I can not comment. We don't eat. We just sit at the tiny bar downstairs and chill
The bar rocks!
Mostly because it was full of Yelp's Elite!
I never made it past the bar, no surprise there. I did order the chicken satay and it was great.
The bartender was a stand-in for the night but he made some wicked shots and kept us entertained!
I could see hanging out here more often....especially if those two roller-chicks show up again.
I know where to find Sam now!

Came here on a Friday for a xmas party. You walk in downstairs to a large bar with people chatting away. Upstairs is filled with tables and booths and another small bar. The food was great-an electic mix and apparently there is: "Dinner at Dusk," available from 4:30pm until 6:45pm, is an incredible value: three courses plus tea or coffee for $18.
There were signs for live performers there as well.

This place was absolutely amazing. I went with my old roommate from college and it was the perfect place to be able to have a conversation without being interrupted by the waitstaff, yet they were always there when needed.
I got the Prixe Fixe Penne Ala Vodka, which was delicious. The prixe fixe menu included a very large side salad (I highly suggest the sherry vinegar dressing), and dessert (I got the mango/apple crumble--sooo good). My friend got the Flan which i wasn't a huge fan of but she loved. The prixe fixe menu was about 18 bucks a person-- not bad for the quality and quantity you are served.
The service was literally the best service i think i have ever receieved. The waiter was incredibly friendly and not annoying. The place was really nicely decorated with a great vibe and would probably be fun on the weekends at the bar downstairs.
I will definitely be back if I'm in the area again.

I love this place! The food is delicious, the service is great and the atmosphere is just what it tries to be - a place to meet with friends and enjoy your time together. I love the garden in the back - had a goodbye brunch with 10 friends there last June and they accomodated us with no problem! It's so cute, close to home and great for people watching :)
Brunch is great, the menu is a little all over the place, but that really just means that there is something for everyone.
Hungry early? They've got a great 3 course prix fixe meal from 4:30pm to 6:45pm every night. The restaurant is almost empty, but you can definitely get your favorite seat and you're not going to beat this deal! If you've got to eat in this window, this is the best deal in town!

They advertise big time to land catering gigs and bring parties into their space but can't seem to handle them. I've been to one event on site and they catered my office party last night. Both were a mess of cold, bland food.
I much prefer going in, as I enjoy that this place is mobbed with old gays. I must show my love for the old gays. Heart.
The back garden area is nice, but isn't set up well for groups. The decor and resulting ambiance are the selling points. And I'm not sure that's quite enough to justify selling me bland, deeply mehhh food, even though they do have a fair amount of vegetarian options.

1 star for them being totally accommodating when I changed my reservation size like three times.
2 star for nice ambiance (it really was quiet enough to have a nice chat) and spacious dining area without the typical New York style cram as many tables into the space as you can scenario.
3 star for our really sweet Waiter.
That being said this place falls firmly into the "don't go back" category. Our food just wasn't good enough to justify a return trip when there are so many other NYC restaurants to try.

This review is about Uncle Marty's barbeque only which is on Tuesday nights throughout the summer and beyond. This is like a barbeque in your friends garden. $24 bucks gets you an all you can eat killer cue with sides. The garden is lovely and I have been coming to this event and looking forward to it for years. With the proliferation of many joints Uncle Marty's is a summer ritual not to be missed. Great brisket, ribs, and sauces from mild to hot. Lot's of yummy sides like whipped sweet potatoes, cheesey grits, guac, salsa, corn and bean salad and a spicy pickeled watermelon that is tdf. Make sure to make a res for the garden and hopefully the new unfriendly hostess will not seat you.

While waiting for a friend to go see the Hulk I looked for a place to eat dinner with my wife. I choose this place because it said garden dining available and the menu had a bunch of different dishes to choose from. The garden was smallish but was nice to sit outside. The menu had too many things for me to choose from. I decided on the shrimp and chorizo quesadilla and my wife had a shrimp dish as well. They brought out a basket with bread and corn bread which was tasty. My qusadilla was very good and surprisingly filling. My wife wasn't thrilled with her dish because it didn't come prepared the way it was said to on the menu. It tasted good but wasn't what she expected. If I end up going to the movies over there again I would stop in to try other dishes on their menu.

Maybe the worst meal I have ever had in nyc. My girlfriend vomited shortly after returning home. When we asked the waiter's best reccomendation, it was to go around the corner to Intermezzo. Awful, awful place. Waiter was honest and friendly though.
East on 8th is always a great dining experience for me. From the indoor tables to the romantic outdoor seating in the rear, this is a fantastic place to have a meal with a little ambiance. The wait staff is always friendly and accomodating, the food is very good, and the place is great for a date or a spot to eat if you're from out of town. The host in the bar downstairs is absolutely friendly and the drinks always hit the spot. Bottom line: Try it once and you'll be a fan as well.
I really love this place. Sometimes I forget how much I love it - which is probably why I haven't reviewed it yet. What more can you ask for, really? True, down home, Chelsea charm - i.e., not trendy, over-the-top, or over-decorated (unlike some...well... many Chelsea eateries). A wonderful menu, a gorgeous dining room, a lovely garden terrace, great service, a charming and gracious staff, a fantastic wine list, delicious food, not too pricey - I mean, I could go on, but just go and see for yourself. I've been for dates, for friendly dinners, for family dinners, a quick drink, or a long night of drunkeness, you name it, it's a safe bet. I heart East of Eighth. Go give it the love it deserves.

I tried this place due to the reviews of the other yelpers, but I have to say...I thought this place was awful. The decor and atmosphere was hip and cool, but the food was just disgusting. The citrus calamari had the weirdest funky aftertaste. My friend and I had 2 bites and couldn't stomach the rest. I ordered the moo shu duck which was absolutely awful. It wouldn't have been bad if they didn't drench it in the sauce. The sauce was tooo salty and rich. I was gagging as I tried to eat it (I didn't want to waste my money). My friend ordered the paella which he said was just ok I don't know...it seems like a lot of people like this place which makes me think that maybe I went on a night where the cook was hungover or something, but because of this horrible experience I will never go back.

It's a decent place. From the outside I didn't expect the lovely atmosphere inside. The music, staff, and customers are hip. The food is OK. Nothing to rave about and not really worth the price to me. Perhaps I'll try their desserts next time.

As the other reviewers noted, the garden is absolutely charming. It was a bit sparsely lit but our server brought us some extra candles. The calamari was good as well as the steak dinner and wine, and all very reasonably priced. Unfortunately the wait staff here were rude and inattentive. One of our entrees was brought late (~15 minutes) and when we asked about the delay the waiter was confrontational and offered no reconciliation. He also managed to stretch what should have been a 45 minute dinner into a two hour ordeal by ignoring our table and chatting with the other wait staff. Waiter gripes aside, I liked this place. Also my date mentioned that they have drag shows here but I've never been.

Ended up here last night for a post-dinner drink. My friend and I had split a bottle of wine over dinner in the area and were just looking to pop in somewhere for a quick beer before grabbing the subway home. To make a long story short, we stayed for a couple of hours. I can't attest to the restaurant or the terrace, but the bar was a great time. The drinks were reasonable, and the bartender was very funny and a genuinely great guy to chat with.
