Some great eye candy is on this beach Joan states in her review.
    Well, thanks for the compliment.
    I watch what I eat.
I run even when not trespassing.
And I enjoy a good multi-vitamin now and again.
Ok: The beach. It's swell. The sand is great for feet, and the mind.

From afar, this beach looks perfect. Golden sand, deep blue water, kids & adults alike frolicking in the waves. This beach begs you to kick off your shoes & feel the sand between your toes. But beware, there are also tar globs all over this beach and they are nearly impossible to scrape off your feet!

I was quick to blame the ugly oil rigs off the coast for this unfortunate phenomenon, but found that these are actually naturally occurring tar balls. Apparently there are some pretty major oil seeps right off the coast of Santa Barbara. It is estimated that about 10,000 gallons of oil each day seep into the ocean in the SB area. Yuck!

So enjoy this beach from afar, or wear some old shoes that can be left outside so tar isn't tracked into your house/apartment/hotel room. If you do go barefoot, be sure to have some nail polish & a scrubber handy.  You'll need it.

If ur one of those people like me, who don't go out to the water or play volleyball on the sand, u can rent a bike (they even have four person bikes!) or a segway to enjoy the beach view while working off some of those calories from eating/drinking on State Street!

We stopped here specifically because it has a small playground right at the beach and  a place where we could sit and picnic while on our drive off the 101.
It was another great find for our son to play.  Stopping every couple of hours on a road trip is a must with our 2-year old, so we scoped out some spots with the help of Yelpers, once again.
We're glad we found this spot. There's a playground at the very end of East Beach that sits just in front of a covered area with benches (no tables).  There are 2 toddler swings and 2 regular swings. The ocean air has had its effect on this swing - because its starting look rusty and definitely squeaks loudly.  There is also a small play structure for kids to climb and slide down.  We couldn't beat the view.
The outdoor showers are close by to wash off feet. We gave our son a sand bucket and shovel. He was happy with that until he found the water. There are clean bathrooms at the East Beach House - so it was good for a stop.
Just an aside -there seemed to be a lot of riff-raff hanging around (made me want to keep an even closer eye out for my son).

They say East Beach is one of the best beaches in California especially for vollyball.  Yes, there easy access.  Yes, it is in the quaint town of Santa B.  But on my particular vacation, we got sticky, black tar all over our feet walking on the beach (natural but still gross) and we were cold.  It could have been better.
Tips: 1) Watch where you walk. 2) Check the weather and hope for 75 degrees and 3) Bring a vollyball.

If you're a local, you know that East Beach is the beach for some great eye candy.  All the young volleyball players head out here for beach volleyball, and usually their girlfriends come along to watch and/or play.  There are probably about 10-12 courts and nets set up for everyone, and it's on a first come basis.  And yes, it does count if there is a ball left on the court.  It's saved so don't think about trying to steal it.

Parking is somewhat of a major issue.  But you can park for free along Shoreline Drive, or on some of the cross streets.  A parking lot is located kind of close for a small fee.  I'm not sure how much it is these days, but paying for parking here is based on the Honor system, so bring cash in small bills.

The beach itself is really clean and open with plenty of room to spread out.  The sand is way soft and makes the perfect bed for laying out for a tan.  If it gets too hot for you, you can always walk up towards the grassy area and lay under the palm trees.  But with all the athletes around, don't expect it to be quiet or to have much privacy here.

If I had to choose my favorite beach of all the beaches Santa Barbara has to offer, hands down, no questions asked,.. it would be East Beach.  Okay, so let's review.  If you're heading to East Beach, be prepared for the parking situation, bring lots of water and snacks because there aren't really any cafes close by, and don't forget over sized sunglasses so you can people watch without looking like a creep.  Let the summertime fun commence! :)

An absolutely georgeous beach. Most notably for me, it was lined with great, tall palm trees. Coming from San Francisco (and living there right by Ocean Beach), this had a distinctly warm, clean, and "southern California" feel to it. That said, I'm not sure if this still counts as central Calfironia or what, but I just loved this beach. It was gloriously warm early in the morning, people were going for their morning jogs or walks, many with dogs - just a great place to be. There are a number of volleyball nets if you head a bit south towards the zoo. Sand was nice and clean where we were.

The waves weren't big when we were there, but seem good for boogeyboarding.

great beach for the active person. Volleyball, sand and from time to time good body surfing. Great people watching (not as great as butterfly though) and by people I mean ladies.

This beach is great. It's such a great change from LA County beaches. The beach is very clean and the long strech of sand allows for an uncrowded area. Arrive early to find tons of parking. The water is also very relaxing here. You can catch a good wave here and there, but mostly it is a nice spot to just dip and relax. The drive to Santa Barbara is beautiful, so the hour and change that you spend on the road is very pleasent coming from the San Fernando Valley. I've been to many beaches and this is definately one of the best in the west coast.

I bike to this beach all the time. Beach Volleyball is popular here and fun to watch. I love this beach because it isn't super crowded and has plenty of room. There is also a great breakfast spot/lunch spot right next to the parking lot.

As we were heading down to LA we decided to stop by Santa Barbara. I've never been here before so I was excited to see what it was like. There are so many beaches to choose from. I had read about East Beach, so that's where we were headed. As we were driving I was a bit concerned. It was so foggy that I thought that the beaches would be freezing cold, but nope once we got closer it was gorgeous. All you could see were people walking in the little town, the tall palm trees, & of course the beach. We parked at the pier for a bit. If you're looking for good scenery for your photos you need to come here, but be careful the pier is open. There are no fences to hold you back from falling in the water. But I have to say, I liked it that way. We didn't get to spend too much time here, so I will be heading back for sure.

Very relaxing beach in Santa Barbara, once you find a place to park. Arrive early on a weekday for best selection. The beach is very clean, the sand is warm, the waves are very mellow, so you'll see plenty of kids splashing in the surf. Great place to take a romantic walk in the sand with your significant other.

something for everyone at this beach. Very clean especially for an urban beach. Beautiful views and lots of people, but it is so spread out you don't feel crowded. Very pedestrian friendly with biking paths and walking paths. Love all the trees as well!
