Neighborhood: East Atlanta VillageEast Atlanta has a few cool shops and places to eat and drink (I personally love the Australian Bakery, and Flatiron) but I would not want to live around this neighborhood. Yikes. Don't venture off Flat Shoals and you *should* be ok.

I've always had a good time in East Atlanta Village. It's cool - not over pretentious in the least bit. Good nightlife at the EARL (which has with-out-a-doubt the best burgers in town), East Side Lounge (fun atmosphere, excellent bartenders, good dj), and I even venture to the local park on occasion to play tennis (I'm terrible at it, but I still like it).. Everything's within walking distance too which is a huge plus.
That said, this past weekend took away a couple stars when two friends got hijacked by 4 guys at gun point, stuffed in the back of a trunk and held hostage at an abandoned house for like 14 hours. They were found and completely unharmed, but never again will I walk around EAV feeling like nothing can happen.
Just wanted to share this so you know to be careful in Atlanta. Granted, we were walking around in a sketchy area late at night (not very smart). But just remember to be safe/be wary of your surroundings.

This review is for anyone thinking of moving or buying property in East Atlanta Village. I recently bought a home here, about 100 yards away from the village. Let me start out by saying, I love EAV. I still do even after my friends were kidnapped about 20 feet from my house following my house-warming party (see Nikki and Ginny's review.)
It is definitely not safe at night (apparently), and....even if you are in a group like we were, you are not safe. I just wanted to mention that the people who kidnapped my friends did not live in East Atlanta and seem to have come here targeting people leaving the bars.
If you are going to move here, the following are necessities: a big, big dog, an alarm system, and a general trust in the inherent good nature of people.
That being said: the East Atlanta Community Association are doing some great things to improve the safety and overall "feeling" in EAV. Security has increased and.. the farmer's market (every Thursday near the EARL) is a great addition., among others.... SEE: http://eaca.net/
~ok, great places to try:
the EARL (for the great food, people, and music.)
East Side Lounge (right across the street) is also really fun. Everyone there seems down to earth and it's never ridiculously crowded. I especially like Eastside Lounge on Saturdays, when the dj plays more house/rap as opposed to 80s, just my opinion (The are the only ATL club to play Spankrock. I freaked. Gabor, the bartender, is fast with a loose pooring hand. Yes, yes the asian anime porn seems to be a reoccurring visual, but come on, who doesn't enjoy that!!
I can't get enough of Mary's (including the recovered gay Karaoke man)! and I always find great deals on furniture and collectibles at East Atlanta Antiques
Finally, parking is never a problem. I wish there weren't so many litter bugs there. I live near a gas station and have witnessed numerous people throw everything from long-john silver trash to hand fulls of lottery tickets out the window as they drive off. It makes me crazy!
I wish there was a DVD rental place nearby. .....Joe's' coffee is kindof a rip off (at least the iced coffee is).
~cheers

Ginny is dead on with her review. I have walked around EAV so many times with just another petite female companion and it absolutely scares me what happened to the two lawyers (one person involved in the matter was a friend) who were recently abducted and held for way too long. Thank God they are safe.
I know this is a freak event that may never happen again, but guys, this is still an odd part of town- half safe, half scary. And no one really knows where the line is drawn between the two. I never walk alone through EAV at night, nor should any other woman, or man, for that matter. The area is great, but still has some maturing to do.
Enjoy it with a group at night, or go alone during the day. But always, like every part of town, watch your back.
I would avoid this part of town completely but I love The EARL and the pet food store too much!!
