I like rats. Rats are cute. And in my opinion, PLENTY of restaurants have some sort of sanitation issue or another... It just comes down to who gets caught and who doesn't.

Anyway, they have an exceptionally good veggie burrito. Exceptionally. Usually I hate on vegetarians/vegans but this is better than any meat-stuffed burrito I've ever had -- hell, I'm embarrassed to say this, but I think it's better than ANY other burrito I've ever had, period, and I've eaten at some really fantastic Mexican places. It also comes with very crisp complimentary chips & great salsa, too. Totally a killer deal for the $9 (with tax, not tip -- I always get take-out). I actually got two meals out of the damn thing.

So, why not 5 stars, then?

THEY HAVE THE WORST HUMMUS EVER. It didn't taste like hummus. It didn't even LOOK like hummus. Hummus should not have chunks of godknowswhat clearly poking out of it, nor should you be able to use an ice cream scoop to plate it. It was a small, round ball of "wtf did I just pay $8 for?" It came with some fresh, tasty veggies, but I could've gotten some green peppers and onions at a grocer for much less.

Lesson learned: white people have not mastered the gentrifying of Middle Eastern food yet, lolz.

I look forward to the next veggie burrito I have from here, but I'm weary of trying anything else. I'd never dine in, either, because the patrons look very annoying. It's a veg restaurant in a ~hip~ neighborhood, so one should expect that, though.

UGH, I don't understand why people love this place. The food is terrible, the service is even worse and the prices aren't even fair- and it's CASH ONLY! What the hell? You vegetarians don't have to stoop so low, there are plenty of better options!!

Uhhhhhh, they were also closed down because of a rat issue, that should be enough of a reason to never want to come back.

I'm not gonna lie tho, I love the circus theme/decor!

So I dated a vegan once...and she liked this place. I would like this place if I were veggie...the concept is great and there does need to be more variety when it comes veggie/vegan friendly places in the city (wow...I love being able to say that now..."in the city.").

Do I like Earwax? Well, let's see.

Quality: Food is ok, nothing too special. I know this is so far from the concept...but I wish they had real bacon and sausage here...it's breakfast!

Price: I don't find the prices too bad considering the location. Now....what makes it worse is the cash only policy....I deal with it at other places but, for some reason, I cannot deal with it here. I just can't...

Service: They're a little snotty and a bit mia.

So will I be back again? I've been a little over a dozen times (before and after the rat fiasco)...that's a lot for Chicago....I will spend my hard earned money elsewhere. After all, I need meat!

i heard they just got a new chef, so after failing to get into Big Star, we decided to try Earwax. All of our food was pretty good, the fries were very crispy and nicely seasoned. Portabella sandwich was pretty tasty. Blueberry-ginger shake was light and refreshing. Chili could have been hotter and cooked longer, it was a little soupy. But this experience was definitely a step up.

Sometimes I really hate this place and other times, such as just now I really enjoy it. I guess it's mainly because I've come here for breakfast or brunch and just have never been really satisfied. They have everything you need, but there is just something missing. For lunch and Dinner, I think is where Earwax really hits the spot. The sandwiches are filling and there is enough variety without going to the vegetarian options. Too bad the video store closed down.

OK, so not only is the food bland here, but it's served in a place that had (or may still have) a rat infestation!  I stumbled upon a list of restaurant closures and found this article.  Sick!  And I even ate there around that time, yuck!

Earwax, you saved me! As a budding vegan, I'm always looking to lighten the load I foist on my omni friends. Usually that takes the form of me caving on dining choices and ordering another veggie burger (the HORROR!). But those days are over ... well, not over but at least less likely.

Veggers will find a strong variety of vegetarian dishes that are easily made vegan on request. Omnivores have slightly fewer choices, but they look delicious (my neighbor was getting the pulled-pork sandwich). My BBQ seitan burrito was perfectly seasoned and a savory delight, but the corn chips that came in tow were small, wispy disappointments.

In conclusion: menu was plentiful, food was delicious, prices were reasonable, service was iffy, atmosphere was inviting. Tell your Kiiiiiids!

I'm in the vast majority who are torn on the Earwax. I get the sweet potato black bean quesadilla, and sometimes it's perfectly seasoned and cooked, and sometimes it's a bland pile of mush. A few of my friends are all about the BBQ saitan, so I'll throw that in there as a positive.

The place IS dirty, and the service sucks. Most of the staff is snotty and uninterested in helping you out, regardless of the fact that it's sort of their job. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if I'm right by and hungry, I'll stop in and cross my fingers it's a good day to get the sweet potato quesadilla.

I have been to Earwax Cafe about ten times, and all but one time, I ordered the Goat Cheese Quesadilla. I wish I could comment on the vastness of their menu, but I've never been adventurous enough to buy anything other than the aforementioned quesadilla. It is by far my absolutely my favorite dish at any restaurant anywhere, period.

The one time I ordered something else, I had the portobello mushroom sandwich, was also quite good. They have excellent potato sides, and by the reactions of friends I have brought their, I can say that the breakfast burrito and cheeseburgers are also quite good.

The coffee is great, and the wait staff have always been very nice and good. I've heard horror stories about the quality of service at Earwax, but I have almost always got the exact opposite. The waiters and waitresses that I've seen there in the years I've been going have been very helpful and friendly. I can't recommend this place enough, my favorite restaurant.

Time to get caught up on some more restaurant reviews.  It was the weekend and the family was heading out for a new breakfast spot.  Actually we were heading to the Bongo Room.  We park, pay the meter and check in for the wait at Bongo Room.  My oldest daughter and son say the place looks packed.  There is a big line of people mingling on the sidewalk.  I thought maybe they were having a fire drill (just kidding).  So after telling them our party size we are told there will be an hour wait.  Our family says NO WAY and let's find another breakfast spot.  We decide on Earwax which is just right down the street.

We get seated at Earwax as soon as we walk in.  The place is busy but there is NO hour long wait.  My wife says the place smells funny.  My daughter agrees.  They think that it is a burnt ham type of smell.  It's not too good of a smell to sit through for the next hour.  Another negative point, Earwax only takes cash, no credit or debit cards accepted.  I always find this strange today when places refuse to accept debit and/or credit cards.  I know they always give the excuse they are trying to keep costs down for their customers but come on, it is only a 1 to 2% additional cost from the credit card companies.  I think your customers would think it is a great additional feature to offer.

Well I ordered the Chilaquiles which was average.  A chip, salsa, scrambled egg, black bean and cheese type of dish.  My son ordered the steak and eggs which again he said was average.  I would have to agree with him as the meat was extremely bland.  My wife ordered the Benedict, which she liked.  I did think her potatoes were very good (I know you are saying that there he is sampling everyone's dishes again, it's good to be me!).  My daughter ordered an Omelet which she also liked a lot.

Our total bill came to around $42 dollars.  The waitress was extremely friendly which was nice.  I don't know if we would go back or not.  We have loved other places such as Over Easy, Victory Banner and Milk & Honey.  So try Earwax at your own risk.

Earwax Cafe is not usually a place that I would normally eat at because I like meat, but when you've got vegetarian friends sometimes you just gotta eat some veggies.
I was pretty satisfied with my BBQ seitan.  It was that spicy kind of BBQ which is pretty delicious.  My two other comrades had some problems with their meals.  One person did not get enough avocado on their sandwich, which is a MAJOR problem.
What I did enjoy most was the decor.  The carnival theme was pretty cool and they were playing some pretty groovy tunes while I was there.

Really excellent place for vegetarian/vegan fare. If you're in the Wicker Park area, do yourself a favor and check this place out. Loved the black bean & sweet potato quesadillas. The potatoes that came as a side were delicious. Friendly staff, easy to get to and reasonably priced. Definitely a favorite.

I am torn with Earwax. I think they have a great selection of vegan food and I absolutely love that! However, this is why I deducted stars:

1. My sandwich literally had 8 hairs in it. Blah.
2. Our waitress went out of her way to be a bitch! I went out of my way to be nice!
3. The waitress charged me a total of $7 more than the menu prices

However, the food is pretty good and you have to make sure you have cash! I loved the outdoor atmosphere though.

Every time I come to Chicago, which is more often than I should, I always eat breakfast at Earwax.
Their belgium waffles are delicious, but too sweet for one to handle so I always end up splitting them with my boyfriend. I love sitting by the window in the sun with a cup of coffee and a stack of waffles or pancakes  and a side of bacon while people watching.
And they are almost always playing the music of whatever band I have come in town to see, so it either enhances my excitement and anticipation for the upcoming show, or it makes me reminisce on the details and highlights of the show if it had happened the previous night.
But when my sister briefly lived in Chicago last year she did mention how she ventured to Earwax to see if they were hiring and found that they were temporarily closed due to a rat infestation...Oh well.

I was nearby and the place wasn't too full so I decided to try again . . . I'm glad I did. I finally got to try the meal I wanted before.  Jason was an excellent server by any standard.  He greeted me, and took my order right away.  He was fast, polite, and really friendly.  The food came out in a timely manner and was quite good.  I would go back, but obviously I would look for him through the window.

As a visitor to Chicago, I wanted to try some of the local spots. Earwax had a yummy-looking menu and quirky decor, so I thought it would be a great lunch spot. Bad idea!!

I walked in and stood by the "Please wait to be seated" sign for a bit. A guy saw me after a while and pointed me in the direction of a table. Almost as an afterthought he added, "Oh, here. Take a menu."

So I sat. Looked through the menu. Read the newspaper. I sat some more. The waitress appeared and seated some folks behind me. I sat for a while longer. She came back and took their order. Finally, she seemed to notice me and I ordered a black bean burger and a soda.

I waited again. And waited. And waited. After about 20 minutes she came back with my soda. It was not packed inside, so I wasn't sure what was taking so long. I waited another 15 minutes. I spotted my food sitting on the counter, but nobody else seemed to notice. Then, finally, another employee brought it to me. By this point the melted cheese had begun to harden. Ew. The burger itself was not that great. Kinda bland. The potato salad on the side was even worse. It had no flavor at all. The best part of my meal was the black cherry soda I had.

Then, as I got out my wallet to pay the check, I (and several other diners) spotted a mouse scampering around the front of the restaurant. I mentioned this to the waitress, who shrugged and said, "Yeah, it's because the doors are open. We're trying to figure out what to do."

After reading the reviews of this place, I guess I should feel lucky that it wasn't a rat.

I've been seven months meat-free, and it's places like Earwax Cafe that make it so much easier. Everything I've tried (messy burger, sloppy seitan, fries, and goatcheese queso) has been delicious. The wait staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I absolutely love the circus freak theme and decor. It's very unique and fun.

The only drawback is that it's cash only, and I'm a debit card whore.

I forgot to update this after the cat sized rat sighting and subsequent closing for mega rat infestation and "we no care about rats" attitude of the dirty hipster fucks who work at/run this place.

Just because you don't shower and eat out of dumpsters doesn't mean the rest of us want to be filthy, ironic, moustache wearing assholes, too.

I'm going to assume this place still has a pest problem based on the fact that the people who work there still think its acceptable to come to work looking like they woke up in a muddy gutter.

Oh, and the vegan cakes here come from Tipsycake...see my review of THAT poor excuse for a bakery for more info.  I was confused about why the cakes at Earwax were so nasty until I found out who supplied them.  If I want a cake made out of dust, shortening, and chocolate I'll make that shit myself at home for free.

Everyone's been hating on this place since they failed one lousy health inspection.  Just one!  What are we, too good for rats and a little filth now?

Well, I still come here.  It's been around since the salad days of early gentrification, before crap like Jimmy Johns and the Tavern showed up and brought the button-downs and woo-woo girls with it.  If you dislike hipsters, vegetarians, Green Party voters, or people who ride their bikes everywhere, Earwax is possibly your nightmare.  Me, I miss the days when those people ran the neighborhood and I can handle a few rats.

Earwax remains one of the few places to grab a tea or coffee near the Damen stop, and they don't care if you sit for awhile.  The atmosphere is laid back and low pressure.  I'll buy a book at Myopic across the street and read it here, and my server will usually strike up a conversation about the book or the author.  Now that's just nice.  Nary a woo woo to be heard.

Food quality varies a lot.  Starting with the good: the black bean burger is one of the best in the city (I like it with the salsa and avocado).  Fries are tasty, too.  There's also a recurring spicy pasta special that's worth a try.  For breakfast (they open earlier than most other local places), the omelet is serviceable, though not outstanding.

On to the mediocre: most of their other dishes are made with meat substitutes, and they tend to be bland.  The cheese sandwiches aren't fully melted and the tomato "soup" is more like a chunky marinara.  And, this being a vegetarian place, you should stay away from anything with meat.  The steak sandwich is better than the turkey burger if you decide to go that route.

Prices used to seem high, but now compare favorably to surrounding spots.  It's never been a fantastic place, but it's never been offensive and it has a certain charm.  Cash only, ATM on site.

Goat-cheese quesadilla: spicy (and yum)
People watching: Phenomenal
Coffee: a little lukewarm but mmm mmm flavorful
Cash-only: annoying but whateverrr

Overall: This is probably one of the most convenient meeting spots if you're going to meet your pals at Six Corners. Your other options are, like, wine cafes, meat-markety bars, and overpriced clothing stores (hellloooooo American Apparel, I'm talking to you).

Earwax,
Is that like toe jam or or belly button wax??

Yeah, belly button wax, there's got to be another name for that shit. Well, whatever...
I came prepared to this joint with a box of Q-tips and a bottle of rubbing alcohol.  I was going to disinfect the place.  Yeah, assholes, I was gonna clean this bitch up!
Well, now I find that there's also rat droppings there.  I didn't know that!!! I I wasn't prepared for RAT DROPPINGS!!!

They serve food in this place (wtf).  I was hungry so thought I'd put a burger and fries in Talley's belly.  Something called a buffalo burger.
The burger was average, little dry, certainly not medium-rare.  Now that I know about the rat droppings I'm cool wit dat.  The fries were damn tasty.  They were sprinkled with love....  (some spice mixture)

The service was swell.  There is a very tall, very thin, "blonde" waitress girl that was working there.  My dinner companion thought she was too skinny.  She wondered if this girl was even healthy. Obviously, she's a h8er.  This girl gets five yelperoos from me.

                                        Concluding Remarks:

I couldn't find any earwax!!!
WTF!!  I didn't come down there for nothing.  The food was alright, although I didn't try a milkshake for chrissakes.  The atmosphere and customers were youngish and hipish (meaning skinny artsy and did a lot of posing).  I liked 'em.

I didn't get  the opportunity to use the q-tips but at least I even tried.  (Talleyrand gets a medal of honor, yay)

Might be amazing for vegetarians and vegans, but my experience was pretty mediocre. It's BYOB, which is good and bad. No overpriced drinks, but there's overpriced food instead. There is also a $1.50 corking fee per drinking person. We had two people drinking, one sandwich and a Coke, and it came out to be $20, tax and tip included. $20 is pretty pricey for a sandwich and Coke.

I'm neither a vegetarian nor a vegan, and I had just logged 2 hours at the gym. I was looking for a juicy half-pounder. I think that Earwax is definitely catered to a specific palate...wouldn't recommend it for everyone.

The decor- Very Sex Pistols.  The pastries are brought-in and ok looking, the food is done open-kitchen style so you can see how clean or unclean they are and the service is present, but pretty spacey for the most part.  If you just want your food and a place to sit and have a conversation then this is it.  The food is good, but not write-home-to-mom good, the breakfast is decent, the vegan sweet potato and black bean quesadillas were good and filling and they let me bring in my own coffee so I was happy about that.  They could try to step it up a notch on the food and service but I think some of the regulars wouldn't go anymore if they did.  Every time I walk, bike, drive, or ride by there always seem to be the same glum lot in there.  If you want to go, it's worth the trip- by the way bring a sharpie marker! You can write on the bathroom walls!

I have been here more than a few times over the years, including when it used to be located in the smaller location across the street. It's not the best place in the world, but I've seen worse. The service is not good. It might be a bit dirty but who says that isn't true with every restaurant? I don't think any eatery is completely spotless. My cousin is vegetarian so this was a good option when we were walking around Wicker Park this summer. I also took out of town guests here about two years ago and they loved it. But maybe that's because they are cool ass hipsters so they fit right in. My friend's bowl of seitan chili was huuuge. We had so much food on the table that we could not finish it. I think this is a better option for breakfast as I love the breakfast burrito and french toast. But I recently tried the sweet potato and black bean quesdilla for lunch and it was pretty tasty. A bit expensive for just a flour tortilla on a plate with nothing else, but again this is hipster-ville. I expect to pay more and to get less in return.

For the longest time I couldn't believe I had never been hear (sorry, had to get that out of the way) since it's right down Milwaukee from me.  Now, I can't believe that I'll ever go back after the April Vegetarian Supper Club.

That's a sad statement of fact because this place reminds me of my favorite vegetarian restaurant outside of the United States (Demuth's in Bath, United Kingdom) in vibe.  Breaking through the outer layer of circus theme that Earwax presents to the passing hipsters, the dining is actually quite peaceful - almost to the point of restaurant and not cafe.  There are interesting wall pieces to sit under but other than that, it's actually quite an earthy laid back (the paper menus are a nice touch) place and not really a carnival atmosphere.

Then again, from the outside, it would pretty much have to be a T.G.I. Fridays inside to match.

Though the food does match the fictional P.J. Blands from the Chili's commercials so I guess they're half way there.  I got the sweet potato and black bean quesadilla expecting it to be interestingly flavored.  It just felt like I was eating mush inside a burned shell.  Worse yet, I took it home (after being unappetized by it quickly) and tried to eat it the next day while more hungry to get a truer impression of the food.  Something weird had happened to it and my carry out container now had a watery substance inside that closely resembled - I don't need to say it but I will anyway - earwax.

Maybe that's how the restaurant got its name.

Though points for having filling vegan soups (intentionally, not like the quesadilla fail) on the menu and at the carry-out counter.  I might stop by to pick up some of that next winter (which doesn't even bear thinking about right now).  Or maybe come back for a breakfast.  But I don't know if I can handle (bar, right down the street) coming hear (darn it, I can't avoid that) again for dinner.

Had a good time here tonight with friends, new and old. Big ups to Becky W and Michael G for setting up this event!

We had a semi cozy spot in the back for our party of 10. They had a variety of yummy dishes to choose from and they also serve breakfast all day long. I decided to have the Messy Burger which came with fries. The Messy Burger was a black bean burger with cole slaw, onions and some other stuff. The burger was great and I devoured the fries within 2 minutes!

As I said earlier, there were some other dishes I would like to try, so I would definately like to come back! I heard their breakfast potatoes were pretty good so that will be on my agenda the next time around.

The fourth installment (my first) of the Veggie Supper Club met at Earwax for dinner. Since there were about 10 of us we got a table in the back. I'm not sure if the location of our table contributed to the slow/inattentive service we got or if that's the norm.

Like I said I got the avo-salsa burger, no avocado and an iced tea. The black bean burger was huge and had a nice zip to it. It came on a wheat bun with cheddar, salsa, lettuce, tomato and onion and came with my choice of side. I got the fries, which were nice and crispy and came with some sort of seasoning on them that gave them a nice kick. Our table was long so it was hard to tell what everyone got, but most seemed to be happy with their choices.

Service could've been better. One of my fellow veggies finished his water and it took so long to get someones attention I gave him part of mine. Even then it involved flagging our server down for the refill! I'm not sure if my iced tea came with free refills or not, thankfully I also had my water to satisfy my beverage needs. Servers passed our table quite a bit, but it seemed that no one could be bothered to give us do much as a backward glance despite the place not being all that crowded.

Our server was nice, we just didn't see much of him outside of the order taking and food delivery. It was also a little odd when he handed one dish to someone at one end of the table to be passed all the way down to the other end, rather than walking around and dropping it off.

Bottom line: Hearty veggie choices, decent food, BYOB, inattentive service. I'd come back if I was in the neighborhood and hungry, but I wouldn't make a special trip.

They get three stars for their menu and attempt at being a cool place.  They miss four or five due to their bad kitchen, cash only status and lack of alcohol service.

Went here for the second time with the Yelp Supper Club and had a fun time - minus the raw steak (i know veggie club right) sandwich my friend had and the thought of having a stray bear hair in my black bean burger.

Their menu is large and has all kinds of cool options they just need to improve their kitchen and the overall experience would be much better.

I like this place but see room for improvement before I put it on par with Handlebar....mmmm Handlebar

What a weird restaurant.

The seating is uncomfortable and the food isn't particularly fascinating, yet for some reason I continue to go back.

I'm not sure what it is about this place, there is an odd charm indeed.  Each time you walk in you feel like you've entered the set of an old rickety traveling circus.  Think of it like that old sweater you just can't get rid of.  It's covered in lint balls, ill fitting and out of date, but for some reason you continue to wear it because it just fits.  For some reason, Earwax too "just fits".

Confusing review, I know.  The final verdict: Just go see for yourself.

Because I can't figure out how to make half stars on yelp, Earwax will receive a full one for now.

When I moved into the neighborhood a little over four years ago, Earwax was a delight.  I agree with a rating below that their black bean burgers were fierce competition for the best in the city, and I'm a vegan-ish person who's eaten a LOT of black bean burgers in my time.

Flash forward to the present- to put it plainly, Earwax has come to be a slimy dump that resembles its namesake more than a restaurant.  The only thing that sucks more than the piss poor food that makes me nauseous every time I eat there is the asshole service.  Y'all are jerks, and now that I moved out of the neighborhood I don't have any more excuses to come here.   It's a shame Bank of America couldn't  have replaced this place instead of filter.

BBQ Seitan burrito was bad. The seitan was minced. It could have been anything at that point. I was very disappointed.  and sad.

The waiter was really creepy. Or maybe just socially awkward. He came up to our table and started talking to us, but there was no clear way to tell if he was a waiter... and he wasn't asking us if we wanted anything. It was pretty confusing. I would consider it just being friendly if he wasn't only talking to the ladies at the table. He could have saved himself if he checked up on us and maybe refilled drinks.

Went to the cashier (or who ever was at the cash register, dealing with people getting take out) to get change. When I asked him for change, he told me to get it from my waiter. Then turned around and walked away. hey Jerk, I would if he EVER CAME BY OUR TABLE. sigh.

And to top it all off, I didn't see any rats. I was promised rats.

Try the falafel sandwich.  It's so rad, I came here twice during my weekend visit!

Oh and an added plus: Jacob Bannon from Converge was there in the booth diagonal from me.

Every time I come here, I leave happy and full. Their shakes are thick and delicious. Their food comes in huge portions. What more do you want from a restaurant?

4 stars because of the great food and the friendly waiters. It's a little pricey and the space isn't huge, so it's a pain having to wait to be seated sometimes. But if you're really hungry, you're in for a treat. They also serve brunch.

Yes, Earwax got shut down for a health code violation.  Yes, that is kind of gross.

I avoided going in for a while, but was craving protein, was in the neighborhood and don't eat meat....so gave it a shot.  I strayed from my usual fare and got a omelette with tofu and veggies and you know what?  It was awesome.  The place looked clean, too.  I stayed there studying for around 3 hours and the server was really nice about it and was sweet about keeping the water glass filled even though I wasn't going to be ordering anything else.

My only beef is that they don't take credit cards.  I hate paying the ATM fee if I want to eat there and don't have enough cash on me!

This was my favorite restaurant when I lived in el Chio, even though the food wasn't amazingly super. I went here by myself a bunch and always got the BBQ Seitan, which is totally delish. I loved that they had chips and salsa as a side dish option, but the salsa isn't actually salsa... IT'S PICO DE GALLO! DUN DUN DUN! Don't ask me why I like salsa but not pico; I will never understand myself.
Sadly I didn't know how to correctly pronounce "Seitan" until I actually went with a vegetarian. "LOL DID U SAY SATAN???" Yeah, whateva.

Really good food; I have never been disappointed.

My only complaint is the non-acceptance of non-cash.  It feels very primitive.  Maybe next time I'll offer a few bushels of corn or some Native American shell money in exchange for breakfast.

This place has:

1) really good smoothies and milkshakes (ESPRESSO MILKSHAKE!!!) 2) good burgers (avocado salsa burger or turkey feta burger) 3) decent service 4) does not accept credit cards (this blows) 4) also they have good breakfast items that they serve ALL DAY. i eat breakfast at like 4pm sometimes, not many places in wicker park are open for breakfast at that hour. 5) they also have a really good tomato bisque. and yummy fries with spices.

good eats. but not accepting credit cards is enough to bump em down a star. oh and also, limited seating. so i tend to opt for carry-out. they're usually ready in 15 minutes and it's just so much less of a hassle.
