This place is amazing. I absolutely love it!
Delicious sandwiches - I've heard that the brunch is also extremely good as well. I love the veggie one - avocado mmmm.
They also have a bunch of healthy/organic products for sale in the back. Upstairs sitting area that's super comfortable... and you can sit for hours w/out feeling like they're staring at you waiting for you to leave.
Also - prices are very decent. Yummy yum yum yum.
I'd give it four and a half, but we'll round it up to five. Coffee is decent, and -- non-dairy folks take note -- you can have your latte or cappuccino made with your choice of soy, rice, or almond milk... ! This makes me a happy person.
Good selection of your standard health-nut-food-store goodies, although it's a little expensive, as these kinds of places tend to be.
Free wireless is a major, major plus, and so are their hours. Music selection when I was in wasn't that great (oldies), but having a breeze waft through on a warm day while sitting for hours in the bright and airy front with nary a complaint: awesome.
Very chill environment, especially the upstairs part. I've really only had the veggie burger and the coffee here. The coffee was good inexpensive coffee and the veggie burger was massive. The guys are always friendly and service is quick. It's a great spot to get work done because no one will bother you upstairs and I have usually been able to find a seat and an outlet. It's one of my go to spots for coffee..food.. and internet
Best spot for healthy food, and free wireless Internet!! I spent most of my undergrad studying at earthmatters... Coffee with choices of soy, almond, or rice milk. Comfy sofas and tables to study or surf the web. The employees are super nice and the chef is amazing!! Must try the green beans & mushrooms, kale, sweet potatoes and my all-time fav the 'eggless egg salad'.
Not only is it insanely over-priced, but the peacenik decor is totally belied by the surely owners and managers.
I was there with my laptop and my friend was there with hers, and they suddenly announced at 10:50 that they were closing (they used to be open till midnight, I believe). At 10:54, as my friend is gathering her things, the owner or manager who is sitting at a table eating tells her in a nasty tone that they're closing and she has to leave. She says "My laptop is shutting down." Then he says it again, "It's 11 o'clock, we're closed!" She says "I know." He says "Yeah, yeah, you know. We're closing, you have to go!" I said "She understands." He says "I don't need you to be her lawyer, I'm not talking to you, I'm talking to her!" I said, "Well, can you just calm down a little?" He repeats "I'm not talking to you, I'm talking to her! Why don't you get out of here?"
My friend, who was already having a terrible day bursts into tears. Meanwhile, I'm looking to the other managers to do something about this guy's tone, and they do nothing but watch.
Mind you IT'S STILL BEFORE 11:00!
The irony is this is a "health food" store. All decorated with chakras and peace signs. I cannot believe that a store that presents itself as such a world-conscious establishment would treat its customers like this.
Organic food, free wi-fi.
The first time I came in, I sat upstairs for hours on one of their comfy red couches, plugged my laptop into the power strip next to me, yelped on their free wi-fi, listened to a pleasant playlist* of classic rock, and drank a $.99 bottle of Poland Spring.
When I got hungry, I ordered the Turkey Delight, which was pretty decently priced at $6.50. As he was handing it to me, the guy nodded knowingly and said, "It's a good one."
I'm not sure if he meant ordering the turkey sandwich was a good choice, or if he had made this particular sandwich really well...but in any case, it was solid. It tasted fresh, and even healthy. I love the olive spread as an alternative to mayo or mustard.
I came back the next day (which says a lot) and did pretty much the same thing.
Except this time I went for the huge Poland Spring ($1.99), and I ordered the burger, which was a little disappointing. It was overcooked and completely dwarfed by the "big, fat brioche" it was served on. However, it was still pretty tasty, as the meat was seasoned well (almost like meatloaf) and the chipotle mayo gave it a kick.
Either way, I really like this place. I plan to hang out here a lot.
And in case you're wondering, the smoothies are around $6.50+, which seems kind of steep. But I don't drink smoothies, so what do I know/care? I'm just here for you. I hope you appreciate me. Tell me you appreciate me.
*I've spent 6+ hours here, and I don't think I've heard a single song I don't know. And I mean that in a good way.
Organic foods bar, juices, smoothies, coffee and free wifi. I definitely diggs this place. The music selection is pretty random, the lounge area upstairs is quaint and quiet.
So far I can tell you that the bagel and lox (the works) is delish. The very berry smoothie was only so so, and totally pricey. The coffee isn't that great either. But the food has been on point! And I love finding organic whole foods places. I can see myself becoming a regular here.
Great staff, great food, great location and free wifi. And its open late. Its everything you'd need in a cafe, and you can pick up a few groceries there in a pinch. I wouldn't recommend getting groceries there often though, as its quite expensive.
Perfect for studying, chillaxing, and feeling good about what your eating.
After Crash Mansion - we went to Earth Matters. I really didn't understand why M was taking me to a Health Food Store at 10 pm on a Friday night.
We went inside and walked upstairs and there were people chilling upstairs.
Apparently someone was going to perform that night - forgot the singer's name.
We then ended up going to another floor and apparently my friend M knew the owner.
M grab some beer and wine and later on our other friends met us up here.
I didn't drink anything here except water since I was down for the night.
This place has a nice and chill outside patio set up. It was so nice on such a beautiful night.
Though I wish 95% of the people weren't smokers!
ECK!
I think I aged like 4 years because I was here for like 4 hours.
So that's my only complaint that my hair and clothes reeked of smoke!
*sigh*
My poor skin - second hand smoke disgusts me!
The food and the groceries are really expensive here but I think I've figured out the reasons why.
People sit upstairs to study and they stay... FOREVER.
The place closes at midnight which is beyond awesome. I guess they charge a little extra for that as well. The upstairs is very warm, cozy, quiet, and inviting for studying and reading. I studied there last night with my friend from 7pm to 12am. All I got was a 14 dollar plate of food and a very sweet ginger lemonade.
The kale was EXCELLENT, the beet ballz were jewlicious, and the cabbage was crispy and had the true sweet aftertaste of a fresh harvest.
People who run this place are really honest and chill. I think I'm definitely going to be a regular this academic season...
The sandwiches are not only really good, but a really good price. I always get the veggie sandwich on multigrain bread. The dudes who work here also get a two thumbs up review, no matter who is working because they're all super cool.
As for the grocery store, it's pretty small, but hey, you can't have it all mcgee.
These guys were promoting health food long before it started getting trendy. Actually, when i was in my 1st retirement post my departure from Bigfoot Interactive, I would man the register to pass the time and keep the income minimally flowing.
So interesting that I came to think of this place because I'm slowly approaching my 2nd retirement on June 30th. But decisions are made in life, and I'm confident this recent decision will lead me somewhere better. To be honest, it already has in a big way ; )
So back to Earth Matters. To start off, great location. Right on Ludlow next to Katz's Deli, in the heart of the LES. Right around the corner from Breakbeat Science. Dieselboy bought some juice from me one day. It's the little things, i tell ya.
Not sure what it looks like anymore, but when i was there, it had nice wood interiors, a quaint little loft up top with free internet and couches, and a rooftop which they had created after I had left. The food and drink bar is great for a quick fresh and healthy lunch, a cappucino, or a wheatgrass shot, and they always seem to have very pleasant employees (starting with me, i was part of the original skeleton crew). And of course the grocery shoppng... i can't really comment on that, because I couldn't really afford it at the time, but i imagine it's a better experience than trying to navigate a Whole Foods in the city. I know there was a new one that just opened on 2nd and Houston which is probably madness.
Anyways, Marco and Nama, wassup?!?
The specialty grocery items are great. I like the staff.
The prepared food is cruelty free, often dairy and/or wheat free and mostly flavor free.
I've been a fan for years, but my love for Earth Matters has grown over the past few weeks.
Last week I recommended holding our office's summer retreat at Earthmatters. I called and described that we needed a quiet place for the four of us to brainstorm, reflect and plan next year. The person I spoke with assured me we'd be fine upstairs and asked nicely that we don't bring in our own food.
Wow! Kudos to an establishment that still offers inside and outside(ish) seating for free in a neighborhood being consumed by Wholefoods and luxury condos.
My co-workers (and boss!) now love it here as much as I do. I have to say, I usually eat yogurt or fruit so I don't have much experience with the food. But I suppose that is one of the reasons this place is great; you can sip coffee and pick at a muffin for hours here and no bothers you.
A true find, unchanged and as enjoyable as ever.
This is a rare combo (especially for the LES) of natural-foods deli, small natural/organic grocery store, very comfy & chill indoor lounge space, internet cafe (rentable computers + free wifi), and large outdoor patio space.
The deli prices are getting painfully high at this point, but the quality is the same: very inventive and flavorful, extremely high-quality raw or gently cooked foods. There are some good deals in the grocery aisles if you take the time to look around.
I've gotten to watch this place grow for years (it used to be the meeting place of choice after various LES shows/rehearsals) and I'm really glad it's there. I wish the crazy rents weren't forcing the prices so high these days. Overall, 4 stars -- for a combo of ouchy prices and 5-star quality.
I really like Earthmatters. It's a great health food store/wi-fi cafe. I used to live directly across the street and when it took Time Warner Cable (read: Devil) over 2 weeks to come install my internet, Earthmatters was there for my internet surfing needs. I really like the Sambazon acai drink they have there. Good and good for you! A lot of people would get the prepared salads and meals they have, but I've never tried the food. I imagine it's good. They have a good selection of fresh juices, smoothies, coffee, tea, and food as well as a variety of health food products. All in all, it fills it's niche.
I used to come here deep in thoes of sunday morning hangovers for the free internet and generally healthy seeming atmosphere. I've since moved on to bloody mary's and brunch as a sunday staple but I will always have a special place in my heart for this delightful little shop. I like the juxtoposition of cute little internet cafe and mini-indy wholefoods style market. Upstairs they have computer terminals and up even more stairs is a great open room with glass ceiling and urban oasis like qualities. If they served a mimosas by the pitcher and some decent huevos rancheros I'd probably never leave.
Decent grocery store (limited selection of specialty items), but the food is great. I love the $10 dinner platter where you can get an entree and as many sides as they can fit. The proportions are huge! I always get the seaweed, kale, and tofu/rice. Theres an internet cafe upstairs and some seating at the entrance. Good place to go read/write/work, etc.
my #1 visited natural food store (yes it is the clost to me too, though i'd still visit.)
all certified organic.
open early (7am), closes late-ish (11pm)

i think the liver saver smoothie is literally saving my life...
prepared food bar is great. organic wild salmon + lbs of sides for $10 is a great deal. (yes i am an organic food nerd.)
I rehearse under this store so I'm constantly in there buying snacks and drinks. It's an awesome health food spot and if you're into that kind of thing, you will be in heaven. I've ate numerous things from their menu, all have been pretty good.
When the bodega closed down and this glitzy health food store/yoga center/cafe appeared in its place I was moaning and groaning about the gentrification of Ludlow Street. But it didn't take long for me to get with the strengh and realize that Earth Matters actually had tons of stuff I wanted whereas the bodega only really had cigarettes, which I'd quit, and gum. The high ceilings and good music make the shopping experience absolutely fabulous -- I like shopping for health food shampoo and oral hygiene products there; on the mezzanine level is an internet cafe' and beyond that is a secret enclosed patio garden where .... you can smoke! They have fresh juice, hot & cold healthy cuisine and a library. Sorry, bodega, I don't miss you.
Let's say, for the sake of argument, that you couldn't care less about the relative "health" of what you eat. This is STILL the bomb place for a taste-bud adventure. Check out the locally baked vegan cookies (right at the register) - ask the clerk which one he or she likes - they're all good , so you won't be sorry.
the grocery/health/vitamins section is nice, however the food and drink bar is not. coffee is ridiculously overpriced, smoothies are just ok, and everything is pricey. plus the service could be way better.
