This is a great spot, and getting better because other hotels are becoming so expensive. Spent Sat night in Eureka and most reasonable chain motels were in the $100 range. There is no comparison between those crackerboxed plastic formula dumps and this place. Very unique and very authentic.
I am holding one star because it seems to be near a soup kitchen or some such. Walking around is not as comfortable as it should be, since there seem to be as many homeless in the area as any part of San Francisco. And that is saying something....
Awesome and trippy place to stay. It's low cost, there's a great pub attached to hang out in, it's right by the water so there's great views, the manager was incredibly helpful, the owners were sweet (probably moreso cus we're Korean).
I was told his place was haunted. I doubt it is, but if you're jittery and watched The Shining too many times, it'll freak you out because of the design choices of wallpaper, carpet, blankets, etc. That just added to the fun for me. As did hanging out in the pub chatting up the locals and talking SF Giants.
I probably rated it even higher cus I had an amazing drive from Seattle to Eureka to San Jose and stopping here was just gravy.
Scared of ghosts? Then stay away from this haunted victorian mansion. The rooms are filled with antique furniture and tall fluffy mattresses the provide a good night's sleep if you can put up with the poltergeist running around the hallway. I've never seen a ghost here, but they are rumored to run around.
Eagle House is quaint and kind of what you'd expect to find in a town of population of 25K on the edge of the Redwood National Forrest. We didn't see any ghosts, but the furniture and decor are definitely Victorian -- it feels like you've gone to your great grandmother's house. The beds all have floral spreads, but they are extremely comfortable and the room is clean and warm.. The elevators have carpeted walls and smell like mildew...but other than that, it's what you should expect to find ..as long as you keep in mind that you're basically in a lumber town. Mr. Cho (sp?) I believe is the owner, and he's very kind, but I agree the woman at the front desk is a little too passionate about her work.
I am in love with this hotel. I came upon it accidentally on a trip to San Fran a few years ago. That was an odd stay. Let's just say, I got a feeling there I've never had elsewhere. It was like The Shining, only more pleasant. I went there for my birthday this year. The lady was all nice on the phone. I drove all night from Seattle, and got there @ 6am... The keys were where the manager had told me they would be, and I had no problem finding my room. The next morning when I went to check in, I ran into the lady I had spoken with on the phone. She was completely different in real life! She snarled at me to get out of the hotel in front of some other guests. I was shocked. My boyfriend was pissed off. He wanted to stay "anywhere else." Later, after she realized that we were paying $200 a night to stay at the fricking place, she changed back into a sugary-sweet lady. She's not fooling me. That woman is a real B----. The owner, Mr. Lee is extra cool. He rides a bicycle and eats at the pub downstairs. He bought my boyfriend and I dinner and beers one night. I will be back, but I'm waiting a minute until the manager gets fired or has an aneurism or something.
Beautiful room, good location, no poltergeists, but don't rely on the breakfast they provide. The room was not the cleanest. For example, there was years of cobwebs accumulated in the window sill. Also, the room was missing tea and coffee, and soap near sink basin. I'm not sure if the manager was the same lady as in the previous review, but she was definitely highly strung.
