Always strolled past this store back when they were on Locust and never walked in. But after they re-lo'd to 13th Street, they have been my go-to for soaps (Harmony and Vetiver being my favs right now), shampoos/conditioners, and my favorite Rehab mud mask. Whenever we have out-of-town visitors, this is always a stop in the neighborhood and am proud to say, they continue to ask us to pick up goodies for them to bring with us on our trips to them.
Staff is helpful, owners are great. I especially like their ability to host events that connect their products to other local businesses (Capo Giro, Lolita, etc.) I did a a soap and lip balm making event upstairs that was a big hit for my group.
So feel free to get dirty so you can get clean!
I stopped back in yesterday and, since I could actually smell a little now that I've started to recover from a cold I hadlast week, I did a little shopping. Two pleasant gentleman were in there - one of which, I believe, was either Duross or Langel - and let me browse in peace. I bought a nugget of the OCEAN soap, which I used this morning. What could smell better heading into winter on the east coast than the ocean? I also picked up a buttercream scrub and a "Monkey Grass" soy candle. Everything is wonderful and delicious. I also, somehow, scored a parking spot directly across the street. This always makes any shopping experience a little better.
Great products, great service, great store.

I went in here for the first time today during my lunch break after reading all of the glowing… Read more »
I've got to join the choir of praises for this place. I'd seen the name here and in Philladelphia Magazine's Best of Philly list and when I randomly passed by on Sunday, I had to see what all the fuss was about. I agree that, upon walking in, the scents are not nearly as overwhelming as at Lush (I can't even walk past there without getting woozy) and I found it a pleasant jumble of smells, and though my boyfriend was still a bit overpowered, he chose to stay inside with the soaps, etc. over waiting outside in the heat/fresh air.
Now, onto the stuff! First thing I noticed was their Bug Off soap. I seem to be having the buggiest summer, but don't want to spend my days doused in chemicals; this stuff smells great and even the fragrance-sensitive boyfriend uses it now. I just ran out of facewash so I also picked up some mojito face & body wash, which is super refreshing and nicely balanced for my combination skin. Last but not least, I spotted some licorice lip balm at the checkout counter and had to have it; I love love love licorice and anise flavors and this is one of those perfect natural lip balms that is smooth (rather than gunky) and sweet (it's got stevia in it) and while I'm not going to eat it outta the tube, I bet it's not so bad if i lick it off my lips.
The staff was very friendly and it looks like free samples are a regular thing (I got some pear soap which smells divine but I haven't tried yet). I really don't consider this place expensive as the prices seem lower than what I'd pay for similar natural products elsewhere and I like that it's a local business. However, I can see how it'd be easy to spend a lot here, since everything is so darn tempting! I'm planning to stop in today to pick up a few little treats for my sisters and nieces/nephew (lotsa cute kid things!) before I fly out to see them tonight. I bet I'll find something for myself again as well.
D&L is indispensable to me. This cute little shop houses the only natural deodorant that works, and as I live on the west coast now, I buy it in bulk whenever I venture home. If you think aluminum is the only way to be stink free, you've really got to try these. On super hot days, I add a layer of powder on top to keep the sweat in check, but other than that, this stuff WORKS like a charm. I've tried sandalwood lavender, ocean, naked, and ginger, and they all rock. Their green tea soap is one of my favorites, especially during the summer, as it's light and refreshing, leaving my skin feeling like silk. The foaming sugar scrubs in pumpkin oat and turkish fig are really decadent as well. The prices are fair, the service is great, and I only wish they had a store in Los Angeles!
I love love love this place. Each time I go I discover new amazing products. Took me a while to venture beyond the soap but I am SO glad I did. This time it was under-eye gel - feels so refreshing and I'm sure I look 10 years younger. :-)

Love the scents and agree that the soaps are very pure - I have sensitive skin and no problems here!… Read more »
I've walked by Duross & Langel numerous times over the years, but figured it was just another soap/bath store. I was wrong. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to check it out and I haven't been able to stay away since. I originally went in for a facial mask, but found myself going back every time I needed something - lotion, eye cream, soap, etc. I've been pleased with every product I've purchased. I also love the small soap samples you receive with every purchase and have been pleasantly surprised by the scents, most of which I never would have thought to try. Steve Duross is very knowledgeable about the products and helpful in recommending what's best for your skin type. Bottom line: D&L is all around awesome for pampering yourself as well as gift shopping for others.
Our office just moved in around the corner so I stopped in to see what was what. Great service-- friendly not pushy. I was encouraged to take my time and smell EVERYTHING, and when I picked up some shower wash, got a nice little free sample of amazingly aromatic soap. The products are natural, simple, and the fragrances are just the right balance-- not too strong, not too herbally, not too anything. Just the right bit of luxury.
This is a great little local business I can get behind.
Use their deodorant and one of their body scrubs and I love both. Although the prices may seem pretty steep everything I've purchased from D&L has lasted a long time. Also a fan of their shaving lotion after being given a free sample by one of the employees.
The deodorant is the only "natural" and aluminum free deodorant that I've used that is any good, and don't worry they have "manly" scents.
I have only been to D & L a couple of times, but I really love the store. The people who work there are really knowledgeable and seem to be interested in helping customers find products that will benefit them and their skin.
I use their red clover soap, which is designed for sensitive skin and eczema. It is really useful and effective. I believe it's also all plant-based, which is a big thing a lot of more popular eczema and sensitive skin soaps (including Dove) seem to overlook. One thing that prolongs (and often worsens) eczema is animal by-products and D & L seems to be one of the few soap manufacturers who has taken this into consideration.
So, the red clover soap is definitely worth a try.
OK, I am officially addicted. I can't stop buying bars of soap here! I'm almost out and I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack.
The guys are totally helpful, and always asking about what new products they should offer. I never have any suggestions, though, because I am so happy with what they already carry. They even throw in little samples of different soaps each time you buy. (So I'm always on a mission when I go. I know exactly what I want.)
Let me get out my frequent soap buyers card now and run down to Duross & Langel. I need more Moroccan Cedar soap before major withdrawal sets in.

I didn't expect to like this place - after all, I don't like the overpoweringly smelly soaps at Lush - but I loved it.
They had a wonderful range of natural smelling products for bath and body, including shampoos, scrubs, moisturizers, conditioners, soaps, washes, face masks, and deodorants. The main display table held piles of glowing and translucent soaps that were hand cut and priced by weight. They smelled enticing and included such skin-friendly ingredients as shea butter, sea salt, olive oil, black clay and aloe.
One of the soap-makers was standing by the table ready to answer questions about the soap-making process, or about the ingredients, or to cut a bar to specified size. After some deliberation I chose one bar that contained goatsmilk, oatmeal, honey, calendula and slippery elm and another that contained strawberry seeds, aloe, and champagne. Both smelled heavenly and didn't burn my nose. I also picked up a bitter almond shower gel with cherry blossom extracts that smells so good that I pause when scrubbing just to breathe in the scent.
Although I didn't buy any I was really intrigued by the aluminum-free deodorants, which are made of a vegetable protein base and come in such scents as moroccan cedar, sandalwood lavender, violet and spiced lime. If they'd only had one in bitter almond I would have snatched it up.
I have to say I was impressed by the customer service - everyone working there was knowledgeable, friendly, and efficient. The line moved quickly and items were nicely wrapped in tissue. I came away oddly excited to get home from Philly and treat myself to a soapy shower.
If you're looking for soaps, lotions, shampoos, etc, this is the place to go in Philadelphia. The quality of their products is unmatched and, better yet, they're nice people, too! Every year around the holidays I buy a bunch of soaps to take home to family members in Buffalo that have become addicted to them, not to mention some for my own place.
I highly recommend duross & langel.
When I shower with the D&L "stress relief" soap all my trouble wash down the drain. I love the store. I love the staff. And I love the free samples. At their recent in-store soirée they even had cocktails! Every time I go in there I just can't help but leave with a smile on my face. And their classes (Sunday School or whatever it is) are such fun! I have gotten so many friends and co-workers hooked on this stuff too. Once you try D&L there is no way to go back to regular soap.
I am obsessed with this store.
I have made trips to Philly JUST to bring back bags full of their product.
The soap variety and creation process is amazing. Last time I was in town, I was able to attend a soap making workshop and it was really interesting the level of thought and creativity that goes into making the different soaps.
The products are incredible! I love the shampoos and conditioners, hair mask, facial and body scrubs, soaps (obviously!), Rehab face mask, you name it I've got it!
In comparison to LUSH, which I can smell a block away and its overpowering and sickening feeling at times, D&L products have the right amount of scent.
Some of my roommates are running in the Broad Street run the first weekend in May and I'm heading down to "support" them, when in actuality it's a great excuse to stock up on D&L stuff!
I love this place! I have only tried their soaps and I'm already hooked. Everytime I get the opportunity to get a gift for someone, (usually friends' birthdays) I get them a bar of soap from D&L because I just want to spread the love!
They have such unique scents (Golden Monkey!!) I was also super excited to see a Thai Tea soap...being a die hard fan of Thai Iced Tea and being Thai, of course ;)
I'm looking forward to trying their other products.!
ADDICTED.
That is the one word I will use to describe how I feel about this store.
So many people kept telling me that I needed to get my sweet behind into Duross & Langel. So many people began telling me this, in fact, that I started to assume that my personal hygiene habits were perhaps not what they should have been.
Well, if I really do stink, Duross & Langel have solved that problem with their tangerine soap and shower gel that smells just like lemon meringue pie that I bought today during my very first visit to this amazing store. Stinky butt be gone! Now I will smell like pie.
This store is out of this world. It's vastly superior to Lush in the sense that it's not horrifically overwhelming to enter the store and things are reasonably priced.
On the down side, the owner is kind of surly. It's quaint though.*
*I edited to 5 stars based on the awesome message I may have received this afternoon. GOLDEN MONKEY SOAP? Be still my heart.
True story, the other night at Eulogy (see other review) I met a surgery resident who comes back to the city to hit up this store. Uh, medical professionals approve. I need not say anymore.
Love this place. So, glad I accidentally found it. Scent not overpowering and so much better than Lush.
They have shampoo, conditioner, mask, deodorants, and lotion. I love their green tea lotion.
As corny as it sounds, I smiled as soon as I walked into Duross & Langel. It smelled like unicorns and rainbows (I'm an expert on these things, so trust me) and was neat and tidy. I loved that I was greeted right away by the friendly owner and staff, who were very helpful as I shopped the shelves looking for lotions and potions to buy for myself and others.
I could've sunk deeper into debt since I saw at least 25 things I got excited about, but decided to be thrifty (stupid economy) and shopped sensibly for a change. I purchased the Ocean shampoo and conditioner, which smells clean and is not too overpowering and the Moroccan Cedar shower gel, which has a musky, slightly spicy aroma that will make the male or female in your life want some, too.
I smell so good that I've been going around sniffing my arms for days. That sounds slightly creepy, but I mean it with total sincerity. I mean it; I smell awesome (and I supported a local business that uses all natural ingredients, too).
It smells nice in here, not overwhelming like Bath and Bodyworks! hahaha
No seriously, I was first introduced to this place during a Business Crawl through the gayborhood and we started at Duross & Langel. They served fruity drinks (which are my fav) and the owner talked about how he got into the biz. He just wanted to make soap that wouldn't irritate your skin! And by golly he did it!
I don't often get addicted to beauty products but I am addicted to their soaps. The smell so wonderful and the fragrance lingers after use :-)
My mom is coming to Philly next month and I am definitely bringing her here because she loves bath products! She'll probably become addicted too!
There really is no reason to go to Lush when Philly is lucky enough to have a fantastic store like Duross & Langel. I must admit, I very rarely buy for myself, but their products make wonderful gifts. I have bought a toner and some soap for myself, which I've really liked a lot. Plus they sell quirky fun things like bath toys (yes, I have an octupus and I do play with it in the bathtub now who are you to judge me).
Duross & Langel is also very actively involved with the neighborhood. There are soap making classes you can take and they even make soaps which are based on specialty cocktails from restaurants in the area, like Lolita and Capogira.
This is a great store...don't forget about it when you're getting ready to pamper yourself.
Love it. Just checked Duross and Langel out today because I like the idea of Lush and I heard that this place was better.
Definitely not disappointed! I feel like it's Lush and The Body Shop crossed together, but is an independent business! They have wonderful soaps in so many different and delicious smelling choices, along with shampoos, a bunch of natural deodorants, facial products, balms, and a whole line for men too.
The prices are very fair here for their stuff since it is all handmade.
The employees were super friendly and cute.
I will definitely be back for all my body cleansing needs.
I'm admittedly a skin/hair/body care junkie, but I am very selective about the products I use. Shopping at Duross & Langel is totally enjoyable; the products are ever evolving, the staff is friendly and helpful, plus the store is totally cute!
Some of my favorite products are their body scrubs, body bar soaps, whipped facial soaps and face masks. I love that they use natural and locally sourced ingredients and materials. Their pre-packaged gift sets make great gift for any occasion.
Duross & Langel is a great independently owned beauty care store owned by two awesome guys who are super friendly and helpful and clearly passionate about their business. I went there for an event they held in collaboration with Tria--where they featured wine-infused soap in honor of Beaujolais Nouveau Day.
I purchased a bottle of their "Naked" lotion, which I find to be amazing for my whole body and gentle enough for my face and also a stick of their Chocolate Lip Balm. Both products are AMAZING. High quality, pleasant and natural fragrances, and very effective. Their prices are reasonable, too!
i recently went back and bought a few bars of their handmade soap---Chocolate Fudge, Blood Orange and Lemon Geranium. Deeee-licious and my skin feels really soft from them!
I'd encourage all guys and gals in Philly to check out Duross & Langel for all of their skin care needs! Support the local artisans!
Hats off to Durross & Langel!
How fun was my balm making class today? I had an absolute blast!
We made two balms, one custom and I smell like a freakin cloud. Even my husband noticed how good I smell 2 hours later.
It's great to support a place that looks at scent holistically and not try to make you smell like a baby hooker.
I learned a lot about essentials and got to play, play and play with everything.
I am moving soon but I will be placing my orders for Thai Tea via the web as soon as I run out.
Ab-Fab!
I went in here the other day to get a present for a friend of mine. Wow did they have an impressive selection of shampoos, conditions, lotions and soaps. It actually took me longer than expected, sincei was debating between all of the great things they had there.
The staff was very helpful and not too pushy. When I asked a question about whether a shampoo had perfumes in it, they said, "No we only use essential oils." Very nice. Oh yeah, and they offered to exchange or refund my money if the shampoo didn't go over well. Can't beat that.
Did I mention how good that place smelled? Don't report me to the He-Man Woman haters Club. Otherwise I might get my mancard pulled.
My friends have been going here for years and I really didn't get what all they hype was about soap before I started going, but there is just no going back to Ivory now! It's a refreshing clean without an icky residue. And so many different scents! Oh I heart!
Seems like my trip to Philly was split between eating and shopping... but I'm definitely glad I found this place while I was visiting! Browsing the store was an adventure in itself, definitely some unique scents and so many that my olfactory system was in overdrive. Finally decided on a few mini soap bars (cherry almond, sea salt scrub, and coriander) and a small jar of the green tea mud mask. So far I've been very satisfied with my purchases. I will definitely stop in again if I'm back in town!
My boyfriend used to live near their old location. When I came by with a bag from D&L, he said that he'd always wanted to stop in and get me something but didn't because of my sensitive skin. I happily explained that they have natural products and plenty of scent-free options.
I love their eye creams. Unlike other brands, they don't sting my sensitive skin. The face wash is gentle and feels great afterward. The bf and I have also used the deodorant, with great scent options that don't upset my skin.
Compared to Rite-Aid, they do seem expensive. But when I realized that one little pot of eye cream lasts six months, it's not bad at all. And it's way less expensive than those overwhelming shelves of skin care at the back of Sephora.
I pick up a few things whenever I'm in Philly, though it's nice to know I can now order online.
Duross & Langel seriously are as good as it gets. I am a body product addict, but I have a hard time finding companies good enough to support wholly. I also like to use as much from one company only as possible. I have been a devotee of Origins, The Body Shop and LUSH and none of them left me feeling satisfied and I never felt like any of them cared about me as a consumer.
Duross & Langel is a complete breath of fresh air. I discovered them a year ago and I have slowly been making the switch. They have a bit of everything I love and I feel like my money is supporting something great. It's nice to shop local at a small business such as this and come away with impeccable handmade products that really work well. I even recently went to their Healing Elements workshop, which was really wonderful and Steve Duross had so much information to share. It was time well spent.
Product recommendations:
Deodorant - Certain other companies have deodorants that should include a warning label. Duross & Langels has worked awesome for me and my girlfriend. Plus the scents can't be beat. (I'm a Moroccan Cedar and she likes Peppermint or Spiced Lime)
Soap - You can't go wrong with getting one of their soaps. I am in love with the Violet Baby Bar. Very light and fresh. Other favorites include: Lavender Oat, Apple Cider, Patchouli Mint and Coffee Mint.
Shower Butter - This is actually face wash and it just works beautifully with your skin. Don't know which would be best for you? Ask! They will be more than happy to assist. Me? I am currently using Lemon Geranium and Ocean Salt Scrub. I'm actually excited to run out so I can try new ones!
Aside from everything else the store is beautiful and the workers are helpful, but they aren't pushy and they will certainly give you space to explore their products on your own. This store can't be beat. I have no problem driving 2 hours just to be able to shop in their store or take one of their classes.
I LOVE DUROSS & LANGEL!!!!!!!
Today I decided to stop by Duross & Langel based upon the many 5 star reviews I have been reading on here. I was the only customer in the store this afternoon but the man working (maybe the owner, I dont know?) was courteous and friendly. Despite the fact that I didn't buy anything he offered me a sample of their soap and invited me back. What I liked about this place is that the scent upon entering isn't as overpowering as Lush. The prices aren't terrible either. I'll definitely be back when I have the $$ to purchase something.
I love DuRoss - the man and the store. He is a doll. And he is a damned fine saponifier. The soap "popsicles" are just soooooo cute. And the Mojito body scrub (the sugar based one) is really heavenly in the shower.
They even have a men's line and carry a few Italian and HTF (that's hard to find) bath & body products made by people other than Steve Du Ross.
Great staff and cute, cute shop.
LOVE IT!!!!
Oh - and they also did a private event for our group and it was such fun. If you can, grab a bunch of gals and have them do a soap & lip balm making workshop for you. It's a blast and you take home the goodies you make.
I don't know why it took me this long to write a review for this place! If anyone knows me, they know I absolutely adore this place! Love the soaps, hand creams, facial scrubs, just about everything! I'm in love with the citrus facial scrub, a whole 8 oz bottle goes a very long way! Steve, one of the owners is super friendly. A friend of mine signed me up for a sunday school that is coming up soon... fall soaps I believe..so I'll update soon on that!
If you like Lush, then Duross & Langel will blow your mind. This stuff is the real deal folks. Locally made by hand, cruelty free, and minimally packaged, this place is for the true ethical product buff who wants to support local business. Their products are first class. What is best about them though, is their deodorant. If you are looking for an organic, non-aluminum deodorant (ladies, this should apply to all of you!) then this is the place to get it. I have tried everything: Tom's, Lush, JASON - but for the gal who actually works up a sweat, none of those products really work all that well. Duross and Langel deodorant does.
My sister also uses one of the exfoliating age defying products and she says that when using it, it feels like she is washing her face with glass shards, but after, she is super smooth and lovely. So take that for what it is worth!
Love this store! The products are well priced, made on-site, and the packaging is minimal- which I like.
Great assortment and staff knows what they are talking about!
Although none of the products at this store are must have "I can't live withouts" the staff is just great. This is a wonderful place to pick out a gift for a friend, and they will take the time to help you make choices, wrap it etc. They are often very kind with samples to take home as well!
Super tiny place, but they carry some super products.
I find this place to be a bit cheaper than Lush and less over whelming. I'm also more than happy to shell out the cash for their moraly-sound products.
I have super sensitive, dry skin and the guy behind the counter helped me pick out some great soaps. I bought some of the guy's grooming products for my beau and he loves them (he also hates Lush, so D&L is a compromise).
Great little place, pretty wallet friendly and you can actually see them making their products. Check it out.
Noice.
I actually haven't been to the store but I did receive some soap for Christmas. It was the "thai tea" soap. Notice the "was", that's right I'm using it to clean all the dirty in the world. It smelled delicious and it was beautifully made.
It is local and handmade, which is nice and I'm thinking about buying some as gifts for other people. It should be added onto the things that make Philly d.i.y. friendly.
Duross and Langel are awesome, and they employ some respectable ideology with their business. They have a lot of great cruelty-free products, and they emphasize their dedication to finding "fair trade" materials from co-ops, family-owned farms, and local vendors. As to the reality of their trade and manufacturing processes, I can't guarantee anything, and urge everyone to ask questions, since they seem to emphasize a high degree of transparency with their production.
They make some great soaps and body products, and I especially love their lime and wheat protein shampoo and their "vitamin C" shower gel. Plus, I am obsessed with their deodorant and hair mask, which both smell heavenly and are so effective. All of their soaps (availabe by the pound) are out on display and they have tons of samples to try. They make a great addition to the "Midtown Village" area, and because of their relatively broad hours, it is a great place to explore while waiting for a reservation at Lolita's, El Vez, or another of the restaurants in the neighborhood.
I am completely in love with this place. I first discovered it over the summer while knocking around in Center City on a day off. I had just been to Lush, where they didn't really have what I was looking for (a very simple face wash). As soon as I was in the door Duross and Langel, I know that I had found my soap sweet spot. Their Naked line is amazing for sensitive skin, and all of their products are guaranteed.
