Review from David G.
Despite the widespread rumors about my filthy and uncouth nature, I actually do appreciate a nice and fragrant soap-down every once in a while. So, when a reliable source informed me that Duross & Langel was home to the finest collection of handmade luxury bath products on the entire East Coast, I knew I had to check it out.
The Duross & Langel store is like the Disneyland of bath and body shops. The exterior is unassuming, but the interior is very spacious, centered around a mountain of handmade bar soaps of every flavor and color. The walls are filled with shampoos, conditioners, liquid soaps, eye creams, moisturizers, and just about every other skin-gratifying item that you could possibly think of.
Not only does the store look good, but the customer service is outstanding. Easily the best in the area. The girl working the desk could tell I was overwhelmed by the selection, so she patiently and methodically helped me find every item that I was looking for (and several items that I wasn't looking for, either). When i told her that I needed to put my purchases into my checked luggage for my flight home, she securely wrapped and packaged everything at no extra charge.
Needless to say, I dropped quite a bit of coin here. My purchases were *mostly* gifts, but I managed to sneak in a few items for me. Let's see here... I recall my receipt showing several bottles of shampoo (my favorite was the lime)... matching conditioner... several things of eye cream... vetiver body wash... and some bar soap too. And just like that, in one fell swoop I did all of my shopping, and Duross & Langel saved me from a long day of store-hopping. (Let's not discuss the damage that this shopping excursion did to my AmEx -- but it felt so so good and was so so worth it.)
Having used their products for a few weeks now, I can vouch for their addictiveness. Really, it's all about the lime shampoo. Who wouldn't want to wake up and run off to work smelling like the best margarita ever?
Next up: the Duross & Langel online store. Since flying cross-country for a bottle of shampoo isn't exactly practical, I'll have to bite the bullet and pay for shipping. For Duross & Langel products, it's totally worth it.Listed in: Fillerdelphia

I am obsessed.
I would say that it is rare that one product would change my personal routine, but Duross & Langel has sworn me off body washes and now I am only a bar girl. I tried to fulfill this need with other handmade soaps, but no, it is only Duross & Langel for me. Their Moroccan cedar makes me swoon. Their apple cider tempts me to take a bite, but I won't. I have to engage all forms of financial self control upon crossing their sweet smelling threshold. During the holidays, they offered a gift box full of soaps made from local beer which was adorable and practical. I bought a few of those. Reading the other reviews, I can see I am in for even more trouble. Right now, I am only in need of their soaps, but who knows what new products I will become addicted to. -
Review from karen b.
earlier this holiday season, someone told me that giving bath products as a present is boring and generic and code for "you're not that important to me."
i call bullsh*t! giving products from duross & langel is giving love.
this store is beautiful and smells wonderful -- just like its wares. for the winter holidays, they had gorgeous pre-packaged boxes of soap, candles and lotions all tied up with bows to make the perfect party hostess gift. for the cutesy types, they also had gingerbread-house-shaped gift boxes complete with gingerbread-men-shaped soaps to fill them with.
and D&L kills it year-round, not just during the holidays. my personal favorite scents in their repertoire include thai tea and good karma. i also appreciate the kitschier goods, like soaps made from local microbrew beers and a "honey badger" variety that makes me smile every time i see it.
ok, gush, gush, gush. you get my point. this store is anything but boring and generic. -
Review from Dana B.
As big a fan I am of organic skin care products, I'm surprised I had waited so long to check out Duross and Langel. When you walk in, you are greeted by their rainbow of handmade soaps and the walls are well-stocked with various hair and skin treatments and even some novelty items (fun-patterned Band-Aids and crazy flavored toothpaste). I was so tempted to buy the cupcake toothpaste! Will keep that in mind for my next visit. As an added bonus, Annie Lennox was playing when I walked in so when the associate asked how I was faring, I added that I approved of the soundtrack. Although she said she didn't choose it, she seemed happy that the background music added to the enjoyment of my time in the store. I will definitely stop in again!

What an amazing shopping experience. They are super thoughtful and attentive. The soap is wonderful and an excellent value. I highly recommend Duross and Langel when you are looking for a gift for a guy or a gal, or for yourself!

This is definitely my favorite body shop in Philadelphia (way better than Lush, Keihl's, etc) especially considering they make their products right there. It's always my go-to spots for finding gifts for mothers - and my mom is now obsessed! She's excited about their new Haddonfield, NJ location so she doesn't need to come into the city. Her favorite scent is gardenia, which can be hard to find and they always have a stock of gardenia body soap here. Love most their scents and the fun colorful blocks of soap.
I have their Rose Garden body cream and the scent is heavenly - a perfect balance between floral and a little spicy. Another favorite is their Mojito chapstick. I went earlier this week and there was only 1 left in the huge jar, so obviously I'm not the only one who thinks so! So many other things I am excited to try, especially their Naked line.
Everything about this place is adorable! The salespeople are always so friendly and always helpful when I'm trying to decide on something or pick something out for someone. -

I am just testing the waters of D&L recently, and so far so good. I have been using their honeycomb shaped soap, which doesn't require any lotion afterwards, which I like. I also tried soap with a loofah inside of it. This is a unique and interesting idea. I will certainly go back for more chunks of this. I do like that all the soaps are the same price, but I am still unsure of how good they are, since I haven't used my chunk yet. I am interested in trying the shampoos and conditoners, but need to wait until I have more expendable cash before doing so. I bought a candle and although it was lovely and smelled fantastic, it was way too expensive for a candle. There are so many different soaps to choose from, and since i like a variety, I will be shopping here more often. Lots of scents to choose from and products for every need.
The only thing about this store that slightly concerns me is that both of the times I went in, a sales-person has come up to me and insisted that they do not like to "hover" over shoppers and if we had any questions to ask. Then they went into a whole routine of what products are good and this and that. Now, I understand and am aware that LUSH just up the street has a terrible reputation for being pushy with customers, but I also feel that if you are going to do the opposite of your competitors in an attempt to be different, you should abide by what you are saying, and do it. I was a little thrown off by being told by the salesperson that they were going to leave me alone, then didn't. -

Review from Eva H.
I woke up the other day, looked in the mirror, and said "oh dear god, I have eye wrinkles." I guess it's finally that time where years of abuse and lack of skincare maintenance catches up. Sniffle.
So I ran (not walked) to Duross and Langel and--while picking up my favorite purple shampoo (so good for blondes!) and some goods for the boy--begged for assistance. Night time eye cream it is. Was it expensive? Well, at $18 it falls between cheapo probably won't work L'Oreal and might work but will require a loan department store brand.
However, though I've only used it for a day, I think it's working. Why? Because Duross and Langel cures everything from bad moods to dandruff. Ergo, it *must* work.
Side note: you can now order online, which is kind of a godsend, given that I've gotten at least 2 (if not more) people out of town addicted to the nectar of the gods that is their products. If you need a gift for a lady (or well groomed) guy, this is your sweet spot--and you can get everything from pre-made gift boxes to designing your own unique selection.
I wish this duo success, if only so they can franchise nationwide and I never have to worry about having access to their killer products which will keep my hair and skin clean and luscious and my face (hopefully) line free.3 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Although I've never set foot in the store, I have been the lucky recipient of some gifts from Duross & Langel. I am a huge fan of bubble baths, and while there is indeed a time and place for Mr. Bubble, a girl likes to luxuriate every now and again. D&L's vanilla bubble bath has a pleasant scent without overpowering. Just a tiny teaspoonful was more than enough to produce tons-o-suds once I turned on the jets in my tub. Best of all, after soaking for over a half hour, my skin didn't feel the least bit dry.
Also in my arsenal is a container of brand new lavender-scented relaxation bathing salts that will undoubtedly leave my bathroom smelling like a Rittenhouse day spa. Serenity is mine!Listed in: Best Places to Shop, Bath & Beauty

I dont know when I became one of THOSE people... you know, the ones who use special hand made soap instead of paying less than $1 for a bar at the pharmacy... but alas, I have become one. I blame Christmas Village (see that review for more details).
I've checked lush and really can't stand their store, its so overpowering and the people are overbearing... "BUY EVERYTHINGGGGG!" No. I need to walk around and smell every bar of soap and figure out which ones I love (and question why they ever came up with the ones I dont love).
I decided to try Duross... perfect place. The service is helpful if you want it, but hands off if you dont. I smelled it all. I ended up going with smaller bars of:
Lemonade (how convenient that lemonade is also my favorite drink)
Cherry Almond (crazy good smell!)
Peppermint Oat (I have a peppermint obsession)
Blood Orange Margarita (I think thats what its called, I took the wrapper off already because its now in my shower)
And a not so hand made one from France that is Apple Pear scented
Total came to just under $27 and I got a free sample of [I don't remember what its called but it smells yummy and is blue].
I want to eat them, but instead I get to smell like them which I suppose is almost as good! haha
I'm holding out on the 5 star until I see how long they last. I found that the Lush soaps didn't last nearly as long as the soap I got from the Christmas Village man. Hopefully these last longer.
UPDATE: Added the 5th star :) They're long lasting, yay! And there was a coupon for a free bar with $10 purchase... so I bought more. -

I have to say I was blown away by Duross & Langel. I had read the amazing reviews on Yelp, but I am not in that part of the city very frequently. However, after a doctor's appointment, I happened to walk right by and had to stop in. As a sometimes-fan of Lush, I must say, this made me never want to set foot in there again!
The selection and scents are wonderful, but not so much that you get an sinus infection and migraine immediately. There were no pushy, overbearing salespeople to chase me around the store, just a friendly older gentleman going about his business who made sure to let me know if I needed help, to just ask. I was able to browse in peace! I sniffed and sniffed to my heart's delight. Everything was packaged beautifully as well. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and I will gladly return, even trekking a bit across the city just for it.Listed in: Work, Supermodel!

I would come here just for the "Undiscovered Treasure" feeling I always get the moment I walk through the door.
It's like someone has stocked a fabulous apothocary with all the products that you want; and that it springs into being with your selected favorites as soon as you cross the threshold.
Now that I think on it, the store may actually be located somewhere on Diagon Alley.
The atmosphere is magically chic, and while that alone is wonderful, I keep coming back for the amazing products.
They have a rotating group of seasonal scents and a "regular" line up that is anything but ordinary. Violet is my personal favorite. It's a bit of an old fashioned scent, but modern fresh and retro sexy. It'll make you want to put on your best va- voom pencil skirt, roll your hair, and drink a Gin Fizz. Like Grandma did before she met Grandpa ;) . Or maybe I just have an elaborate fantasy life.
I've never actually seen it crowded, but they seem to have a great following. The staff is helpful without being overbearing and the owners seem really invested in the neighborhood. Both in terms of grassroots involvement and general promotion of other businesses.
Be sure to sign up for the email list and visit their website even if you're not Philly local. -

Great products with a not-too-high price tag. I love this place! Total combination of addictive-behavior inducing and calming all in one. Staff is nice and I enjoyed the visit. Will be back!

Review from Teri R.
I think I may just be a bit addicted to D&L. I walked in yesterday and felt like I had just taken a Xanax. Calm settled over me like a blanket, and my senses came alive as I took in all the surreal scents and colors.
One employee greeted us as he was happily wrapping fresh-made soaps (how great is it that the soaps are made just upstairs?) and one asked if we needed help, then allowed us to wander and ponder and explore.
I ended up with my absolute favorite sea salt scrub bar, a coconut scented bar with a slice of loofah right in the bar, a bergamot 2011 bar, and (as a nod to my other addiction "all things moroccan") a "mineral rich and wonderfully detoxifying" rhassoul clay bar that has one of those scents that makes me pick it up and breathe it in every time I walk into my bathroom.
I mentioned to the girl that rung up the sale that on the days I get to open a new bar in the shower, it's like Christmas morning. And I am far too excited about filling up my D&L soap club card to get my free bar.
So far I have limited myself to the amazing bar soaps, though a friend picked up a deodorant yesterday, and I may follow his lead the next time I'm in. I am also looking forward to trying a shampoo and some of the skin care line. And the cannabis balm taunts me every time I check out.
I was just there yesterday, but I'm already jonesing a return visit. Two more bars and my club card is full ... and cannabis balm, you may just be coming home too ...1 Previous Review: Show all »

Went to DuRoss & Langel again last night as a special shopping-spree trip for my 5 year old daughter who literally RUNS into the tub whenever we use a D&L Bath Bomb.
Steve, you have saved bathtime for us! Tub-time has never been more fun that when you have a Koi-Toy ($12) ducky soaps ($5 each - we got 4 of 'em) Bath Bombs ($8) and fizzies ($2.5 each -we got a bunch - my fave it the pomegranate one).
Oh, and you gotta buy a Koi-Toy (a light-up plastic koi that changes colors and swims all around the tub). Such fun!
Lots of fun home-made (on premises - Steve was pouring soy candles that very day) bath & body products.
I LOVE THIS PLACE! (Who wouldn't?)
Steve - you have RESCUED bath time for us!Listed in: Flam is an Aromatherapy…

"You say 5 stars. I say 3."
As an unashamed product whore, I take my manbathing, bodyscaping activities quite seriously.
Mainstream materials don't go down with me. Only those products with the rarest natural ingredients; most improbable and pure formulations; with highly complex, wholistic and innovative processing; then delivered with a yarny ethos and high-altitude esprit will do.
Given these impossible criteria, I'm going to buck the ratings trend and award Duross & Langel 3 "A-OK" out of 5 "Whohoo" stars.
D&L does many things right. They create a very welcoming atmosphere. They are clearly wholly devoted to their craft. They want to provide products that both smell and feel good, while using natural ingredients, and perform a vital function (for those of us who appreciate the urgency around maintaining a silky, touchable exterior.) And for their efforts, they clearly have a large and devoted following, which is fantastic.
I am impressed with the care and attention they provide to each customer, being careful to listen to their needs and interests, and sending them off with hope in a bottle and a buoyant sense of wellbeing.
Personally I have not made great choices in my product selection, at least with those manufactured by D&L themselves.
During a recent visit, after much hemming and hawing I left with a squeezy bottle of shower gel labeled Egyptian Musk. I really struggled over this purchase -- not over the price, because their prices are more than reasonable for the quality and service provided. More because I wasn't sure if I was a "musk person."
To that end I huffed many times, dabbed the related moisturizer on my pulse points, and whooshed around the store until I could make myself certain this was the fragrance to which I would commit myself, at least for a full 24 hours.
What's the worst that could happen, I thought?
Imagine smelling as though a warm skunk writhed out of your tight panties, clawed down your jeans to the pavement, rolled over, tail splayed, and outright died. Because that, my friends, is precisely how I smelled after washing up with Egyptian Musk.
I could not shake the smell for hours.
I was also provided with a complimentary sample wafer of their vanilla soap. Vanilla is yet another one of those fragrances I have a strained relationship with. I just can't come to love it. So occasionally I tease open the wax sack and give it a sniff, then gag, then return said sack to the little drawer where it spends the evening hours, unlathered and unloved.
While I haven't yet had great success with D&L's various formulations (they're on the sweet side), they do sell a special edition of Pre de Provence soaps called Gardener, and I adore the Bergamot Tea soap cake I've bought there.
I have nothing but respect for this store, and love that they make so many people happy. Even if I myself have not yet scored. But you can't hold a good product whore down, so I shall keep trying.Listed in: Gay Guide to Beauty

The first time I went in here, I was on a mission to get this amazing deodorant that smelled of peppermint and perfection. Little did I know, How overwhelmed I would be by the greatness that is Duross & Langel. I ended up walking out with that, a buttercream sugar scrub and the body wash in both buttercream and moroccan cedar. Everything smells so incredible in this store, so if you think you just want one thing- you'll probably end up getting three.
I ended up going back there again because I had a male friend who was using a body wash called "sensual" left by an ex girlfriend of his. No man should be using this as a body wash, period. So I was on another mission, to help him smell like a man - in a good way. Everyone in the shop was incredibly helpful, I ended up getting him a set that included a shaving lotion that he gave high reviews for and a sponge! The gift was very well received and I no longer had to hear about this sensual body wash.
I'm getting to the end of my stock up however, which just means that when i'm in the city next (because it seems i'm out of town more often than not) that my first stop will be here. -

First off, I LOVE how friendly the sales associates are, and they know a lot about the products and don't leave you standing there while going to get more info. Less rude than the people at Lush.
Second, the products are just so colorful and adorably packaged, I'm pretty much a sucker for anything cute as well, like many previous reviewers.
I recommend you get their soaps, they lather well and last a LONG while. Reasonably priced at 7 dollars, pick up some lip balm while you're at it, and for those who...ahem...perspire a lot, try out their deodorant. They don't prevent you from sweating, but it sure kills the smell. I just went in and picked up the violet scented one today.
If you're ever in the gayborhood in Philadelphia, this is one of the few must visit places to go to. -

We stumbled upon this place on Sunday and handmade skincare always peaks my interest. The store was clean, organized and homey. The associates were super helpful and answered my millions of questions. Overwhelmed by the amazingness of their products my boyfriend and I left the store. We made it half way down the block when he said "My apartment kind of stinks and that lemon candle smelled really good." We did a 180 and bought the 7oz candle in Lemon Sugar. I just received a text from him "The candle is amazing, I think I want another different one when we go back to Philly."

There are already 104 reviews but that's okay. The people inside are friendly and know when to leave you alone and when to help. Picked up some of the glycerin soaps that are sold by the pound. If I buy them, they're less floral than if my wife picks them out so we can both use them. After we try them, I'll probably raise my rating to five stars. Good stuff.

This place is constantly rated highly on yelp's Philadelphia shopping list, so I was very excited to stop by. After getting a warm welcome from the two employees there, I let them know I found out about the store from yelp, to which they were very excited.
So much to choose from, I finally decided on a small bar of blood orange margarita soap, small bar of strawberry seed soap and a relaxation massage bar.
They might of had a price sign by the soaps but I didn't notice it, I would like a general idea of how much they cost but I understand that every piece is hand cut so not exactly the same size.
I will definitely go back. -

Get your butts to Duross and Langel!
My favorite soap makers have done it again - this time with a 78 Blue candle! They have transformed my favorite scent from soap to shea moisturizer and now to a candle that is turning my bedroom into a haven of luscious olfactory delight.
I am mainly a soap girl at D&L but all their products are lovely and worth a try. The staff is great and very knowledgeable. Stop by the pick up some things and definitely check out an in-store event. They are always a blast and usually include a bit of booze!

Duross and Langel is my favorite place to buy presents! The selection is great, the scents aren't overwhelming, and the staff is super-friendly. I have really sensitive skin and can't use most scented products but I've never had a problem with anything from D&L.
For my birthday my friends bought me a Sunday morning soap making class upstairs where we made our our own apple cider and oatmeal soaps, plus we got a discount on everything in the store.
Oh, and they'll custom-make products for you if they don't have them in stock. -

My friend Marcus and I stumbled into this place while walking around the Philadelphia Gayborhood.
Upon entering the store, I got super excited! The store smells divine! The place was eminating with super clean, refreshing scent. Hmmm.....Ahh.......Oooh......Rejuvenating. :)
We were immediately greeted by two friendly associates who informed us that they make their handmade soaps upstairs. I love it !
There's so much products to choose from and I love the fact that their products are 100% Vegan and they use biodegradable and compostable bags. I love supporting independent, local places like this. They have very unique cruelty-free products and it's the only store that exist in the world!
This is definitely going to be my new favorite store in Philly.Listed in: Traveling to Philadelphia, Glamazon

As corny as it sounds, I smiled as soon as I walked into Duross & Langel. It smelled like unicorns and rainbows (I'm an expert on these things, so trust me) and was neat and tidy. I loved that I was greeted right away by the friendly owner and staff, who were very helpful as I shopped the shelves looking for lotions and potions to buy for myself and others.
I could've sunk deeper into debt since I saw at least 25 things I got excited about, but decided to be thrifty (stupid economy) and shopped sensibly for a change. I purchased the Ocean shampoo and conditioner, which smells clean and is not too overpowering and the Moroccan Cedar shower gel, which has a musky, slightly spicy aroma that will make the male or female in your life want some, too.
I smell so good that I've been going around sniffing my arms for days. That sounds slightly creepy, but I mean it with total sincerity. I mean it; I smell awesome (and I supported a local business that uses all natural ingredients, too). -

ADDICTED.
That is the one word I will use to describe how I feel about this store.
So many people kept telling me that I needed to get my sweet behind into Duross & Langel. So many people began telling me this, in fact, that I started to assume that my personal hygiene habits were perhaps not what they should have been.
Well, if I really do stink, Duross & Langel has solved that problem with their tangerine soap and shower gel that smells just like lemon meringue pie that I bought today during my very first visit to this amazing store. Stinky butt be gone! Now I will smell like pie. -

Love it. Just checked Duross and Langel out today because I like the idea of Lush and I heard that this place was better.
Definitely not disappointed! I feel like it's Lush and The Body Shop crossed together, but is an independent business! They have wonderful soaps in so many different and delicious smelling choices, along with shampoos, a bunch of natural deodorants, facial products, balms, and a whole line for men too.
The prices are very fair here for their stuff since it is all handmade.
The employees were super friendly and cute.
I will definitely be back for all my body cleansing needs. -

Duross & Langel seriously are as good as it gets. I am a body product addict, but I have a hard time finding companies good enough to support wholly. I also like to use as much from one company only as possible. I have been a devotee of Origins, The Body Shop and LUSH and none of them left me feeling satisfied and I never felt like any of them cared about me as a consumer.
Duross & Langel is a complete breath of fresh air. I discovered them a year ago and I have slowly been making the switch. They have a bit of everything I love and I feel like my money is supporting something great. It's nice to shop local at a small business such as this and come away with impeccable handmade products that really work well. I even recently went to their Healing Elements workshop, which was really wonderful and Steve Duross had so much information to share. It was time well spent.
Product recommendations:
Deodorant - Certain other companies have deodorants that should include a warning label. Duross & Langels has worked awesome for me and my girlfriend. Plus the scents can't be beat. (I'm a Moroccan Cedar and she likes Peppermint or Spiced Lime)
Soap - You can't go wrong with getting one of their soaps. I am in love with the Violet Baby Bar. Very light and fresh. Other favorites include: Lavender Oat, Apple Cider, Patchouli Mint and Coffee Mint.
Shower Butter - This is actually face wash and it just works beautifully with your skin. Don't know which would be best for you? Ask! They will be more than happy to assist. Me? I am currently using Lemon Geranium and Ocean Salt Scrub. I'm actually excited to run out so I can try new ones!
Aside from everything else the store is beautiful and the workers are helpful, but they aren't pushy and they will certainly give you space to explore their products on your own. This store can't be beat. I have no problem driving 2 hours just to be able to shop in their store or take one of their classes.
I LOVE DUROSS & LANGEL!!!!!!! -

Duross & Langel is like a modern day apothecary. Whatever is ailing you, they have something for it. Soaps cut up in various sizes are piled high on tables. Everything smells fantastic and you can buy as much or as little as you want... though it takes a person with nearly mythical powers of restraint to not buy more.
I've bought soap and a package of bath bombs there. All my friends as me where I got that awesome soap and I tell them. They're that clear, glycerin version much like the ones at Lush yet somehow they seem to last longer, which could be a bad thing. I'd have an excuse to go back if the things lasted longer. I've only tried one of the bath bombs (they sell them in packs of five unlike Lush where you can buy huge ones one at a time). They were the Milk and Honey ones and I remember it smelled great and didn't leave any glittery crap or a rim of color in the bathtub like that of another store's bath bombs. But life being life, I have only tried the one. The others sit in my cupboard waiting for me to have an at home spa day. And they wait, and wait, and wait... But the soap gets a workout every single day. -
Review from Jaclyn S.
I didn't expect to like this place - after all, I don't like the overpoweringly smelly soaps at Lush - but I loved it.
They had a wonderful range of natural smelling products for bath and body, including shampoos, scrubs, moisturizers, conditioners, soaps, washes, face masks, and deodorants. The main display table held piles of glowing and translucent soaps that were hand cut and priced by weight. They smelled enticing and included such skin-friendly ingredients as shea butter, sea salt, olive oil, black clay and aloe.
One of the soap-makers was standing by the table ready to answer questions about the soap-making process, or about the ingredients, or to cut a bar to specified size. After some deliberation I chose one bar that contained goatsmilk, oatmeal, honey, calendula and slippery elm and another that contained strawberry seeds, aloe, and champagne. Both smelled heavenly and didn't burn my nose. I also picked up a bitter almond shower gel with cherry blossom extracts that smells so good that I pause when scrubbing just to breathe in the scent.
Although I didn't buy any I was really intrigued by the aluminum-free deodorants, which are made of a vegetable protein base and come in such scents as moroccan cedar, sandalwood lavender, violet and spiced lime. If they'd only had one in bitter almond I would have snatched it up.
I have to say I was impressed by the customer service - everyone working there was knowledgeable, friendly, and efficient. The line moved quickly and items were nicely wrapped in tissue. I came away oddly excited to get home from Philly and treat myself to a soapy shower.Listed in: Getting Pretty in LA

If you like Lush, then Duross & Langel will blow your mind. This stuff is the real deal folks. Locally made by hand, cruelty free, and minimally packaged, this place is for the true ethical product buff who wants to support local business. Their products are first class. What is best about them though, is their deodorant. If you are looking for an organic, non-aluminum deodorant (ladies, this should apply to all of you!) then this is the place to get it. I have tried everything: Tom's, Lush, JASON - but for the gal who actually works up a sweat, none of those products really work all that well. Duross and Langel deodorant does.
My sister also uses one of the exfoliating age defying products and she says that when using it, it feels like she is washing her face with glass shards, but after, she is super smooth and lovely. So take that for what it is worth! -

Wow. Just, wow.
This place is overwhelming but in a totally great way. As soon as I walked in I knew I'd be dropping some cash, because it's seriously fantastic.
The girl that was working in the store was SO nice and really helpful without being pushy. I love the fact that they cover skincare / haircare, plus a few random things thrown in.
It doesn't even smell overwhelming like a lot of other places.
I have this huge problem with trying to find natural deodorants, but I guess my armpits are really sensitive and everything from whole foods / lush / toms of maine makes my pits raw and crack (gross. i know.). But I got the ceylon natural deodorant from here, and it works amazingly.
I also got two soaps, the vetiver and the red clover. Which both smell absolutely amazing, and the red clover is really moisturizing.
I can't wait until my next paycheck so I can try out their shampoo bars and lotions, and everything else imaginable.
I know that they have classes / showcases on soapmaking and stuff, and I would absolutely love to attend one sometimes.
I will never ever ever ever recommend someone go to Lush ever again. -

Duross & Langel is a great independently owned beauty care store owned by two awesome guys who are super friendly and helpful and clearly passionate about their business. I went there for an event they held in collaboration with Tria--where they featured wine-infused soap in honor of Beaujolais Nouveau Day.
I purchased a bottle of their "Naked" lotion, which I find to be amazing for my whole body and gentle enough for my face and also a stick of their Chocolate Lip Balm. Both products are AMAZING. High quality, pleasant and natural fragrances, and very effective. Their prices are reasonable, too!
i recently went back and bought a few bars of their handmade soap---Chocolate Fudge, Blood Orange and Lemon Geranium. Deeee-licious and my skin feels really soft from them!
I'd encourage all guys and gals in Philly to check out Duross & Langel for all of their skin care needs! Support the local artisans!
Hats off to Durross & Langel! -

Duross and Langel are awesome, and they employ some respectable ideology with their business. They have a lot of great cruelty-free products, and they emphasize their dedication to finding "fair trade" materials from co-ops, family-owned farms, and local vendors. As to the reality of their trade and manufacturing processes, I can't guarantee anything, and urge everyone to ask questions, since they seem to emphasize a high degree of transparency with their production.
They make some great soaps and body products, and I especially love their lime and wheat protein shampoo and their "vitamin C" shower gel. Plus, I am obsessed with their deodorant and hair mask, which both smell heavenly and are so effective. All of their soaps (availabe by the pound) are out on display and they have tons of samples to try. They make a great addition to the "Midtown Village" area, and because of their relatively broad hours, it is a great place to explore while waiting for a reservation at Lolita's, El Vez, or another of the restaurants in the neighborhood. -

If you like the smell of anise, then you need to try Duross & Langel's clarifying charcoal shower butter. This whipped soap is amazingly smooth, doesn't leave behind a residue and works perfectly as a night facial cleanser. At $16 a tub it's quite expensive, but well worth the splurge.
I'll echo other reviews about the service - helpful and genuinely friendly but not overwhelming. The sliver samples of soap at checkout are great little extras.
Check out their website for a schedule of classes ($45 for 2 hour hands on workshops, sample products included) - can't wait to sign up for one in 2010!
Note: They don't accept amex. -

My boyfriend used to live near their old location. When I came by with a bag from D&L, he said that he'd always wanted to stop in and get me something but didn't because of my sensitive skin. I happily explained that they have natural products and plenty of scent-free options.
I love their eye creams. Unlike other brands, they don't sting my sensitive skin. The face wash is gentle and feels great afterward. The bf and I have also used the deodorant, with great scent options that don't upset my skin.
Compared to Rite-Aid, they do seem expensive. But when I realized that one little pot of eye cream lasts six months, it's not bad at all. And it's way less expensive than those overwhelming shelves of skin care at the back of Sephora.
I pick up a few things whenever I'm in Philly, though it's nice to know I can now order online. -

OK, I am officially addicted. I can't stop buying bars of soap here! I'm almost out and I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack.
The guys are totally helpful, and always asking about what new products they should offer. I never have any suggestions, though, because I am so happy with what they already carry. They even throw in little samples of different soaps each time you buy. (So I'm always on a mission when I go. I know exactly what I want.)
Let me get out my frequent soap buyers card now and run down to Duross & Langel. I need more Moroccan Cedar soap before major withdrawal sets in.1 Previous Review: Show all »
