2 reviews for Durango Hometown Hostel
Having never spent much time in Colorado, my best friend and I were a little apprehensive about staying anywhere outside of Boulder/Denver on our Epic Road Trip from Washington, DC to Portland, OR. We knew we couldn't make it all the way to Flagstaff from Denver in one day, so we picked a city as close to Mesa Verde as we could find - Durango, Colorado.
Not knowing what to expect, we drove up to a mostly empty hostel just a few minutes away from downtown Durango. We were then greeted by Candace who spent the next three days making us feel right at home. The hostel is the nicest one I've ever stayed in - clean, bright rooms, large bathrooms, a porch, reading area, computers (free!), and an amazing kitchen that my roommate and I spent ample time preparing food in.
Candace gave us a million recommendations for things to do in town and I found my new favorite small town in the U.S. Don't ask me how many martinis I consumed at a hole-in-the-wall bar downtown. I don't remember and I prefer to remember, instead, spending the 4th of July watching fireworks from the top of a school bus with a bunch of river rafting guides. A home away from home, indeed.
I'm writing this from a top bunk at the Durango Hometown Hostel. This means two things: 1) that the hostel is so comfy and inviting that I don't mind lazing around during the day instead of going to one of Durango's many awesome coffeeshops, and 2) FREE WIRELESS.
I can't say enough good things about this place. It's super clean, has great amenities (great showers, lockers, enough bathroom facilities for everyone, men's/women's/co-ed sleeping rooms, a deck, a nice kitchen & living room area, computers to use if you're not a nerd like me), and a really warm atmosphere. Really, it's like staying at a charming B&B with some extra people in your bedroom. To top it all off, the proprietor (Candace) is awesome: office hours are technically from 3:30 to 8 PM, but she offered to let us check in as late as midnight if we needed to! And she bakes sometimes...
It's brand new, so prices are liable to change, but we're paying $28/person a night during the high season, so it's definitely a great bargain. There's also a 10% discount for staying 3 nights or more!
I'd come back here in a heartbeat.
