I came in here for a quick bite, and DANGGGGG this place was busy on a Thursday night. The line to order wasn't huge, but there were several people waiting for their orders to be filled and their tummies to be satisfied.

My friend and I weren't super hungry, so we each decided to get an order of shrimp dumplings, which cost 4 dollars/order. Though there were LOTS of people waiting, we didn't wait that long for our food, which was really nice. I wasn't really expecting that much food, but was surprised to see that there were 8 plump shrimp dumplings in my take out box. Score! :)

The dumplings were piping hot and DELICIOUS. I didn't have a spoon to enjoy the soup as much as I could have, but the dumplings were juicy and honestly, some of the best dumplings I've ever eaten. Unfortunately, I wasn't very hungry and was only able to eat half of my order.

If you are looking for some cheap, filling, DELICIOUS food, come here. Don't be scared by the crowds because you get your food relatively fast and it's freaking worth it, it's that good :)

Finally, a place where I actually want to fight for the bill... and then hide it soon after so my friend doesn't discover how cheap of a bastard I really am.

Discount tastiness, I lurve you!

I recommend the sesame pancake with a meat of your choice.

Bubble tea is decent.

You actually can sit down here, space is relatively clean.

I find the fried dumpling a step down from their competitors - tasting ok, but the dough is a bit tough, and the meat is not as flavorful.

$5 for lunch for two in New York?!?! It can happen!

  1. Chives and Pork Boiled Dumpling
  2. Sesame Pancake
  3. Pork Fried Bun
  4. Pork Wonton Soup

Its a bit of an adventure to find it, since its slightly off the beaten path, but a good 20 minute walk east of SOHO and you'll save plenty of money so that you can go back and shop some more.

Now normally I'd bore you all to death with a long, intricate story that (kind of) had to do with my experience at the dumpling house.*

CHOOSING to put that aside, I went with a few friends, we were all ravenous and needed some dumpling lovin'.

My sister and I ordered together, gorging on:
1) Two orders of the Sesame Pancake with veggies
2) Hot and Sour Soup
3) Dumpling noodle soup with vegetable dumplings
4)Steamed vegetable dumplings
_________
The Total?
$11**

Yowza
The portions are good sized, and its easy to get carried away because everything is so cheap.

Once we all managed to sit down together*** we enjoyed our food, laughed, told more stories, and then loosened up our belts to help the food baby that we all were suddenly immaculately concept-ed with.
Can't wait to go again, even though their vegetarian options are meager; the best thing I had was undoubtedly the Sesame Pancakes!

i wish i could give 4.5 stars.  dammit yelp!

this place was suggested to us by a friend of ours who used to live in nyc.  we found it after a long walk through the smelly streets of chinatown (no offense chinatown, i'm just not used to such a crowded city)...  we walked in and immediately walked out.  we walked in and it was so packed and we couldn't tell what was going on so we turned around and walked out.  we took a stroll around the block, both starving.  we knew that we wanted to go there - no longer just on the suggestion, but because a place that crowded is bound to be delicious.

so we went back in.  we figured out where the line began and waited.  i was so hungry, i felt the need to order way more than i needed...but after ordering 4 fried pork and cabbage dumplings, 8 boiled pork and cabbage dumplings, 3 pork stuffed steam buns, a bowl of shrimp wonton soup and a diet coke, we were only at $7.50.  really?

we waited a looong time for our food.  there was nowhere to sit, so we stood at a counter that faced the sidewalk.  i got in a small argument with a girl while trying to defend our spot while my guy was getting our food.

the food was fabulous.  it was hot, fresh and delicious.  it was healthy and bad for you all at the same time.  we just kept eating and eating and eating.  finally it hit me that $7.50 worth of food, was about $2.00 too much food :P

i would absolutely go back to vanessa's dumpling house.  i might just call it in next time though!

INT. VANESSA'S DUMPLING HOUSE - AFTERNOON - second trip in three days

JONATHAN enters again, this time with his brother, in search of an even better experience.  There is a longer line, but this time JONATHAN will order new items.

Four minutes pass.

JONATHAN
Pork and chive dumplings, Boiled shrimp dumplings, sesame pancake and sesame pancake with roast pork.  And two bottled waters.

CASHIER
Nine dollars, seventy five cents.

JONATHAN looks at his brother, who stares in disbelief.  It takes about ten minutes to get the food as it is pretty busy inside.  JONATHAN and his brother eat at the stand-up table as there are no seats at all.

The boiled shrimp dumplings were phenomenal.  8 for $4.  They are what dim sum people would think of as a harkow.  Great texture to the skin that unveils shrimp inside, made perfectly.

I looked back after a minute and the sesame pancake (75 cents!) was gone and my brother's mouth was full so I was out of luck for trying that, but he looked pleased.

The sesame pancake with roast pork ($2) was out of this world, my favorite thing there and something I could every single day and possible every meal.  Two pieces of sesame bread/toast on the outside and roast pork and other vegetable looking things inside with a great sauce, absolute perfection.

JONATHAN decides immediately after one bite of the sesame pancake with roast pork to add the 5th star as it is now deserved without question.  Two adult males eat a filling lunch, with water, for under $10.

Okay. I write this review with trepidation because although approximately 300 other people have written in about Vanessa's Dumpling House, I have always considered this place to be a hidden gem in the LES/Chinatown area.

I come her for lunch about once a week, and I still cannot believe what a delicious meal you can get for under 5 dollars a person. I'm a big fan of the spicy/sour cucumber salad($2) and the chive and pork fried dumplings($1 for 4). As someone who heartily enjoys spicy food, I appreciate the gigantic bottles of siracha hot sauce on every table.

Finding a seat here can be challenge at certain times of the day due to the limited table/counter space, but the majority of customers do take their food to go.

Also dba:  Vanessa's Dumpling House.

The price fits nearly everyone's budget in today's ailing economy.  The pork noodle soup is good especially their dumplings.  I rate it four stars due to insufficient seating.  They also need renovation as it appears rather shabby and dark.  I came here with one of my Asian Meetups for lunch.  I recommend Dumpling House for lunch or brunch or dinner-on-the go for the average busy New Yorker.

The bubble tea is just regular green tea with tapioca, minus the price of real bubble tea, at $3.00.  There are no business cards, but a take-out menu and a detailed, itemized receipt which I've used to search in Yelp to write this review.  This restaurant sits close to the border of New York's Chinatown and Little Italy.

Cheap eats indeed!

Nearly every day since first visiting this place, I wake up dreaming of steamed pork & chive dumplings with a side of peking duck pancake.  Drooling. Everywhere.

Not to mention that the prices are phenomenal and the service efficient.  PERFECT lunch spot if you're in the hood, but don't count on a seat unless you're a shark willing to wait for the kill.

DO NOT WANT.

ugh!

@kevin f. : i couldn't taste any of this meat you were talking about :( my first bite into the pork & chives 'dumpling' pulled away fat globs.

the skin is too thick for a dumpling. they should be labelled as buns. misleading.

my friend ordered the chicken & basil, which you know.. sounds like a good idea but i should've realized that this was an asian restaurant and there's reason why no other dumpling places have 'chicken & basil' haa haa haa. not good.

i think will come back though to try their sandwiches and their cucumber platter, fingers crossed.

however, for all my dumpling needs, i'll go to prosperity dumpling. their dumplings are far superior, plus i've never had to KO people for seats or wait 15 + min for dumplings.

Dear Dumpling House,

What happened? You went to my most favorite place in the world, to a meh place. I've been disappointed every visit back. First you cut 5 dumplings for a dollar to 4. Then when I came back recently, your dumplings were a bit too doughy and I didn't even finish them all.

Big kudos to the redecorated interior and more ample space for dining and no more free for all ordering.. But I'd definitely recommend other dumpling places a short walk away where you can still get 5 for $1.

Nice knowing you :(

From afar, sees big sign that says Dumpling House. Gets through front door, sees big crowd in front of a long counter and seating area. Walk walk walk to the back  of the restaurant and gets on line. The cashier speaks english, cantonese and mandarin. $12 bought us 2 orders of pork and chive dumplings (8 total), $2.25 sesame duck pancake (not recommended for very health conscious folks), 3 orders of $1.25 chicken corn soup (just right. not too thick), 1 order of #9 steamed dumplings. We crammed into a 2 seat table - the wait for the tables is maybe 5-10 minutes. definitely coming back here again - best dumplings in chinatown! Where else do they sell a pizza slice sized "peking duck" sesame pancake for $2.25 - pray tell :)

I love the dumplings here. Best to come during non-peak hours bc there is sometimes a long line. Their $1 pan fried pork dumplings are so tasty and yummy. I also highly recommend the wonton soup- it has seaweed in it and the wontons are very soft and delicate in texture. Hot and sour soup very good. I think that in order to get the full appreciation of the sesame pancake, you must order it with a meat filling. Don't get the bubble tea. Not so great.

Hunt in packs.  The moment you get there, have one of your number stake out the next table likely to come open.  Have the others handle the order.  I always get 8 boiled pork n'chive dumplings, which take longer than the fried ones, but work better for the thickness of the dumpling.  The sesame buns are quite good too.  As you can tell from other reviews, this place is cheap and good, though occasionally a bit slow.  Every so often you'll get a bit of gristle in a dumpling, but it is an occupational hazard I am willing to take.

The bubble tea isn't as good as other places, but the price is right.  I can't remember if they have Taro flavor, but get it if they do and you haven't tried it before.

Finally, they sell huge bags of frozen dumplings (50 of them) for $12  so you can take them home to recreate the magic whenever you want--all you need to do is boil some water--the boiling directions are on their menus.

EXTREMELY CHEAP, TASTY AND FILLING FOOD! Those words should be enough to convince you to stop by this place.

The Sesame pancake with duck tastes like peking duck except for the buns, it's seasame pancakes for $2.25.  The pan fried dumplings are $1 for 4.  Hot soybean milk for $1....this whole lunch cost me $4.25.  So for the ppl who are on a budget with food, def. come by here!

Once upon a time I moved across the street from this super duper amazing cheap and delicious House of Awesomeness... and since go twice a week. But only because I have to force myself not to eat the same things every day.

The price and tastiness is unbeatable.
If you think that you won't get a full belly worth of the 1$ you just spent: WRONG. I always buy 1$ Dumplings and then a Red Bean Bun (1$ as well) but can never ever finish it.
If you order their sesame noodles (or any noodle dish).. it will last you for lunch and dinner. The noodle dishes for $4 are HUGE.

Yes, the cashier is somewhat unfriendly... but just think about the constant stress she has from getting gazillion orders each and every minute throughout the entire day! Uh, also, because I used to go every day (tip: don't do that. Your stomach won't appreciate it)...I saw her there every time. I doubt she gets any vacation. Also, if you do give a tip she will say thank you. The women at the front giving out the orders are super friendly if you actually smile and thank them also.

Anyway, this is a dream come true for people having to much month left at the end of their money.

Are you broke, yet looking for some place to eat out?  Do you like Chinese dumplings?  Are you looking for an eatery that's super cheap yet tastes good?  If you answered yes to any of the questions, Dumpling House is your destination for the day.

The dumplings (and other foods) here are sooooooooooooo cheap I always wonder how this place stays in business.  The taste?  It's actually really good!  The restaurant is hella sketchy and dirty, but plz ignore all the ambience/decor aspects here.  There's a line to order, but there's almost no meaning to it since you'll find people cutting in front of you if you don't watch out.  I guess this kind of chaotic disorder is the standard for Chinatown, which can be a subtle stress.

You are here for only one reason:  Eat Dumplings.

I found this place by accident when I entered the restaurant to eschew the wretched smell of fish and stale asphalt that lingers the streets of Chinatown.

The place is small but the prices for dumplings are amazing.  1 dollar gets your 4 fried dumplings!  Unbelievable!  Dumplings are available either fried or steamed.  They taste okay, but for the price, I have no complaints.  They actually make the dumpling in the open, so you can see them handle your food.  Pork buns are 3 for a dollar!

My only tip is to bring your own soy sauce and rooster sauce when you plan to dine in.  Why?  Because they water down all of their sauces, which is actually quite disgusting!

Enjoy!  Best of all, for ten bucks, you and your friend can have a dumpling eating contest without breaking the bank!

Ummm...what? My fellow Yelpers steered me astray with this one.

When you walk into a Chinatown eatery for dumplings and none of the Chinese people are eating them, you take it as a hint. Next time, I will.

The greasiest dumpling I've ever tried, and not enough flavor in the meat filling to make it worthwhile. Sorry. Sesame pancake was good, but not worth waiting in line for. At around 7 P.M., I didn't think we were going to get a table, either. Won't be returning.

After finding out Fried Dumpling (or whatever it was) was closed (like teh ant in the rainstorm I am usually the last to find out) I found Vanessa's, which is the same thing.

It's perfectly placed so that I can do massive lunch runs for the office. Which is what I wound up doing 4 times since last month. Lucky me?!
What can I say, it is the perfect food for cheaply catering office celebrations and events.

You know the deal by this point, I'm just reaffirming it. Cheap dumplings, fantastic duck sandwiches, yummy kimchi served up cold in a fiery red pepper sauce to balance it out (and to dunk your dumplings in).

Service is ALWAYS fast, accurate and efficient.

The woman who was making/frying the breads pulled one out and noticed it wasn't brown enough for her liking, so she turned it back over and pressed it back into the oil. So very wrong; I was hoping that would be the piece I would get for my sandwich. They get an honorary 6th star for that.

This place is actually called Vanessa's dumpling house and is a really popular lunch spot so be prepared to wait. Unlike Prosperity Dumpling House nearby, this place had seating for ~15 guests.  We got the pork and chive fried dumplings (the tastest in my opinion), the pork and cabbage fried dumplings (4 pieces each), the chicken boiled dumplings (~6 pieces), a sesame pancake sandwich with duck (delicious!), another with veggies...these sandwiches are genious! A triangle of their huge sesame pancake is sliced in half and filled with veggies and duck or whatever. Also had two tubs of soy milk, and one tub of congee. All for $13!!  Wow what a bargain and great cheap eats spot. If you're lucky you can snag a seat in one of their tables (not that many). But if it's a nice day out, you could take it out to the nearby park to eat!

Followed reviewers before my trip to NYC. Had a very long wait on a Wednesday night and after finally getting our food, we were fortunate to get 2 chairs (everyone for themselves) at that moment. The food was very good and we loved the duck pancakes and dumplings. I couldn't get over how cheap! $6 for so much food! Definitely a place to try and enjoy a good and inexpensive meal. Popular for students and struggling actors. Expect a wait and try to grab a table if your with someone as soon as you get there.  A must try.

Whoever makes the dumpling wrappers and the buns here knows great texture -- the dumpling wrappers are really nice and chewy, and the buns are soft and satisfying. I stopped by here today (on my mission to try every dumpling/hand pulled noodle place in NYC) and tried the pork and chive dumplings (4 for $1) and the pork fried buns aka sheng jian bao (3 plump ones for $1). The pork/chive dumplings were really fresh - I loved how crisp the bottoms were, and the wrappers were perfect. The filling, while flavorful, wasn't as flavorful as places I like in Elmhurst/Flushing, but it was still good. Somehow it seemed my dumplings didn't have as much filling as I'd hoped, but that's okay.

The sheng jian bao were the stand-out -- not only was the bun part really, really good - chewy, moist, with a nice fried bottom, but the filling was great -- it had lots of cabbage and ginger with the pork, and I think there was some mushroom in it. Most of the sheng jian bao I've eaten just have pork as the filling, so I was pleasantly surprised by this here.

As a last note, this is the fanciest dumpling house I've ever been to. I was expecting some hole-in-the-wall dump like most of the other places I've been to (but have LOVED, mind you!). The sign out front is really colorful, and so are all the menus outside and inside. They have tons of people working, and most of the kitchen is open so you can see all the action. There's a back kitchen with a window where you can look in to watch workers actually filling and folding dumplings and other goodies. There's also a decent seating area inside, and even a clean bathroom in the back you can use (the key to get in is to your right -- most people don't know this).  They're also really organized here, and when you place your order, everyone gets a ticket number.

I saw almost everyone ordering the sesame pancakes with fillings... the beef ones looked sooo good. I'll definitely come back here to try those and get some more sheng jian bao.

My personal favorite of the various dumpling joints in the area. While maybe you get a little less for your money - Vanessa's dumplings are 4/$1 as opposed to 5/$1 elsewhere - I've always found them a bit higher in quality. The meat is juicier, the spices more pronounced - there's a wonderful aroma of ginger that fills the mouth when digging into a batch. Also, the other items on the menu rate a bit higher than average. The stuffed sesame pancakes - stuffed with duck, beef, or ham & egg - are the best in the hood, a meal in themselves, and delicious. The pork buns - similar to the dumplings, but with a breadier, fluffier outer shell - are also great. Soups are OK, noodles get a bit mushy, but they always pack it with lots of meat.

As far as "bang for your buck" goes, Vanessa's is one of the best. They can be very busy at times, but I think it's worth the wait.

First the New Yorker, then TONY and now, I, L.A. Burke shall sing the praises of

THE DUMPLING HOUSE! Yes, it has changed, the people are nicer, they actually line up now and there's not as much yelling but I still love love love it.

Probably my favorite and most -frequented restaurant of Manhattan, this beyond tiny shop (think half the size of Magnolia's) is home to some of the most delicious dumplings this side of Beijing. and trust me, if there is one thing I know it's my dumplings. These suckers come at five for a buck in the fried pork variety and while there are many other similar places none has found quite as near and dear a place in my heart. Here goes the list.

1) The EXPERIENCE is unbeatable. There's nothing that can bring me back to China more than small crowded spaces with shouting people who refuse to line up and who are dying for a snack. Forgo the line that draws near the door and elbow your way into a spot at the counter.
2) The SANDWICHES. Otherwise known as "niu rou bing" or sesame pancake with beef (or tuna, I like beef though!) are piping hot fluffy mounds of sesame bread goodness stuffed with beef, carrots, cilantro and a great sauce, all for a buck fifty.
3) The FROZEN DUMPLINGS are to die for, seriously I bought a bag of the veggie ones to get me through finals and ate the entire thing in one night. Ok, I ate 16 but still, that's a lot. Hands down the best veggie dumplings in the entire city, as if the pork ones aren't enough. And beat that "vegetarians eat cheaper" fallacy and buy 30 frozen pork ones for the same price.

Basically, go , eat and enjoy. You'll quite possibly have one of the best meals that 5 bucks can buy (five pork fried dumplings = $1.25, beef sesame sandwich = $1.50, peach snapple iced tea= $1.25)

Where: On Eldridge by Broome Street, look for the big red sign. You'll only find seats if you're struck by the grace of God so take your goodies down a few blocks west on Broome and stake out the picnic tables in the park while watching intramural soccer.
Take the orange line to Delancy street. Jiaozi jiaozi jiaozi!!!

Famous Fat Dave recommended this place in the video on his website. He's a cab driver/customized food tour operator (don't we all know one of those?). And if there's anything I learned from my last trip to New York, it's listen to Famous Fat Dave.

See, last year a friend of ours got us one of his food tours as a wedding present. This year we didn't want to fork up the hundreds of dollars Dave charges so I did some research to find out some of his other recommended food haunts so we could do our own food tour. Dave recommended the sesame pancakes here, hence our visit.

Instead of ordering through the window on the street like in the video, we stood in a long line inside the restaurant (the ordering window wasn't open - maybe it's permanently closed?) and ordered at the counter. Most people got dumplings (which also looked good), but we focused on our goal: sesame pancakes. I got a plain one for ONLY 75 CENTS. My husband's roast beef one was about $2.

At 3:30 on a Sunday the place was really hot and PACKED with no seats to be seen. My husband and I stood outside and ate our made-to-order sesame pancakes on the street. A word about the sesame pancakes - these are more thick slabs of a hot bread sandwich than what you might conjure up at the word "pancakes." They're studded with sesame seeds, cut in half and filled with green onions. The plain (again, ONLY 75 CENT one) was clearly the winner. It was slightly greasy, but an excellent and filling snack.

The clear loser was the roast beef (which also included carrots, cilantro, green onions). I could see the roast beef in the window as we walked in, and it looked gross to me then. It looked tough with visible ribbons of fat. Apparently, my husband agreed and after a few bites of it, he threw the beef away and made his into a plain one like mine.

Oh their steamed dumplings were delicious and filling! Vegetable dumpling was a little dry though.
Sesame pancake was only $2!

BUT... they kinda lose 1/2 a star because when I poured the soy sauce into the take-out container, there was this strange little mucous-like thing floating around... It looked like bloody snot or bloody chicken slime, but upon closer inspection, it looked like red kelp. So I have no idea what it was but both my soy sauce containers had this thing floating at the bottom... Okay they lose 1 star.

Almost but not as good as Prosperity Dumpling, I still like the fact that there is more variety here.

Getting food here seems to take no time at all.  The pork and chive dumplings ($1 for 4) were pretty good but the thinner dumpling skins at Prosperity let you taste the filling much better.  The pork fried buns I had weren't very memorable though.  But the sesame pancake I had made up for all of that as it was definitely the best part of the meal.  I don't know what exactly they put it in but it's a winner every time.

I came here my first time on a cold winter night and I've been hooked but now that I tried out Prosperity, I think I'll be coming here less often.

I love the way the dumplings here taste. The filling is much better than Prosperity Dumpling (though I like their dipping sauce more). I wish these dumplings had the thinner skin of Prosperity's.

I've had the sandwiches with duck and pork inside and those were nice, but too doughy for me.

The best thing to get here is a bag of frozen dumplings to take home and cook yourself! It's such a good value and better than many of the pre packaged dumplings you can buy in the stores around the area (and Flushing).

Tried to convince my bf to go here after a meal at Hsin Wong (so I could pick up a bag) and failed but he's definitely going today. muahahah!

What can you buy for a dollar nowadays?    You can get a greasy, starchy slice from that dive on St Marks, the New York times, or perhaps a can of soda from the local bodega.  Hell, my company cafeteria charges $1.50 for a small bag of potato chips.

At Dumpling House, you can stretch that dollar into 4 beautiful, plump, juicy, freshly fried pork and chive dumplings.  Though prosperity dumpling down the street may give you a few more dumplings for a dollar, these are larger, fresher, and more flavorful.

I came for the dumplings, and stayed for the dan dan noodles.

For $4, you get a massive box of ultra peppery and savory dan dan noodles with shredded cucumber.  The flavor profile on these were out of control.  My first bite of these thick-cut, toothsome noodles elicited a wide-eyed, "holy shit!" and a desperate grab for my water.  No sriracha or extra sauce is needed here.

Yes, this place has gotten more than enough buzz to fill its limited seating area 2x over, but the buzz is well deserved, as this place is a must visit the next time you're in Chinatown.
