DELICIOUS!!!  I've been here three times now and it's always above and beyond my expectations!  Skate and Dumont Burger are very good choices for a simple dinner.  Service is so-so, but the food makes up for it.  Each time I have gone, service has been non-responsive or messed up my order.  The first time we went we had to flag down a bus boy to get our check because our server never came by after dropping off the food.

My sisters had a special that they literally licked the plate clean.  Apparently the Pork Cheeks over grits is to die for and my sister even went back the next day to indulge in it once more.  Artichoke salad is always a good choice, even for your entree.

Will definitely go here again!

I have been going to DuMont since they opened, and some things never change: the food is consistently amazing and the service always sucks. Knowing this, I still decided to come here for my birthday for one reason - the skate - but we'll get to it in due time.

I started off with a pomegranate martini. It's the right amount of sweet and sour, and I always drink too many.

Titz and I shared two appetizers.  The first was pork cheek with poached egg, grits, brussel sprouts and pearl onions. Typically, DuMont's appetizers are of modest proportions, so I was surprised when a huge bowl meaty richness arrived. The flavors hung together in perfection but a smaller portion would have been a better choice, and left us wanting more instead of a bit overwhelmed. The second was the octopus salad w/ poached apple, toasted chickpeas, and arugula. The octopus was perfectly cooked and the dish was wonderfully balanced, but too delicate to compete with the pork cheek.

For the main event, I had the skate with mashed potatoes and a reduction of roasted tomatoes, olives, and garlic. This is the epitome of comfort food and by far the best thing on the menu. Everyone talks about the DuMac 'n Cheese, but there are tons of restaurants successfully compete with similar takes on this old standby. There is nowhere you can get anything that compares to the skate. Matthew had the burger, which comes with the most amazing house-pickled onions and was cooked to perfection.

I would have loved a birthday dessert, but the waitress totally ignored us throughout dinner, instead spending most of her time working a table of three right behind us. I waited tables for over six years and know the difference between a bad server, a weeded one, and someone who just doesn't give a shit. She was of the latter from the start. But this I've come to expect from DuMont - pretty much the worst service in The Burg.

So come here for the food, but don't expect to be valued as a patron.

It's always awkward when you go to a restaurant with your significant other, and you find yourself wondering "man, I thought I knew what love is, but then I just ate this amazing..." and so on. Luckily it wasn't just the two of us, so any awkward tension that would have been caused by my longing glances at the food were at least somewhat defused.

But ogle I did. I had already been to Dumont Burger, so I knew what to expect with my food. (Although truth be told, I may have enjoyed this burger more), but I couldn't stop staring at the other dishes on the table. I gazed longingly at my girlfriends chicken over mashed potatoes, and had to stop myself from leaping onto the table and humping my friends Mac and Cheese. If they thought they'd make me stop by offering up bites, they were sorely mistaken. Tasting the godliness of their eats only made things worse. The Mac and Cheese was creamy, decadent and oh what the hell... sensual. With their choice of noodle and cheese blend being somewhat beyond perfection. But I knew it would be amazing going in. The chicken was a complete surprise, as I bit into a juicy bit of perfectly cooked fowl, coupled with some godly mash.

And as if that wasn't bad enough, after devouring my spectacular hamburger, I noticed my friend hadn't finished his own yet. And the staring began anew...

We popped in here on a whim about eight o'clock last Saturday because we were fairly certain they wouldn't be able to seat us quickly and we'd be right back out the door. To my surprise, by the time I had a drink and a cocktail in hand from the bar ten minutes later, we had a table.

We paid for this quick seating turnaround with a longer wait than you'd expect for fried oysters and then two medium-rare burgers, and the fried oysters weren't that good, but that had to be one of the best burgers I have had in Brooklyn.

The 'garden', in addition to accommodating the crowds these infamous beef patties create, created a very nice ambiance. Just open enough that you don't feel like your entirely inside, but closed in enough that your entirely blocked off from the elements. The exposed wood paneling gave the place a casual, warm weather vacation feel and the numerous heat-lamps looked like they intended to deliver year round.

The bar tender, waitress, both hostesses, and water guy were all extremely busy - and all extremely nice and professional. I thought the wine & liqueur sangria my wife had wasn't really worth being a signature drink, but their liquor selection was fairly impressive and the beer options weren't that bad.

As I mentioned, the oysters in white sauce on special weren't worth the time it took the waitress to explain the specials to us. The burger, though, was soft and good. It was a gentle, mellow meat which was complimented well by the Gueryre, and would have probably been overpowered by the bleu. The bun was a little crispy on top and soft inside. For whats its worth, the fries were tasty too.

I hear the burgers arn't even the places main draw - so I'll be back again for the Mac and Cheese real soon. I'm not sure if its the fare, the prices, or the fact it isn't smack in the middle of Willamsburg, but the more mature crowd helped to make this a relaxing and enjoyable evening.

Dumont is the perfect blend of new york sophistication and neighborhood charm. There are wooden benches, but also dim, romantic lighting. The wine list had the staples, and the Syrah I had was delectable. Service was friendly and easy going. The food took a little while longer than expected, but we were so relaxed from the atmosphere that we set about enjoying good conversation and weren't too concerned about it. The hangar steak was stellar (I know cause I basically ate half of my bf's plate). I had the burger, which was a solid showing. Very big meat patty cooked to perfection. I added gruyere and everything tastes good with gruyere on it. The fries were delish!

Prices were steep for brooklyn, but very reasonable. drinks, food, tip for 2 was $60. This is a super cute spot for an intimate meal with friends or family. Make sure to ask to sit indoors. We made reservations and they tried to seat us in the 'heated' garden..... not happening. Overall, def recommended and I will be back asap to have the mac & cheese.

I thought I already reviewed this one... weird.

Anyhow came with friends for brunch.

Since we were many we had most of the things on the menu, and thought the food was worth 3 stars.
It's good, just nothing setting it apart from any other brunch place of the same genre.

What deducts a star is definitely the lack of attention from waiters/waitresses.

Maybe we weren't hip and cool enough for the appearance of this place.

Good patio area.

I don't go to Williamsburg much but this place will definitely have me returning soon.  Beautiful garden, beautiful skate steak, and even more beautiful mac n' cheese.  I heard that the mac was THE go-to dish and could not be missed out.  It was true to form and lived up to its claim.  I also heard that they have one of the best burgers that can be had in NYC (pretty much everyone else in the restaurant had one) but I will have to check it out next time.

Their service is great.  Our waiter did a fine job of keeping us comfortable and tended to.  The outdoor seating area in their private garden is awesome.  I was there on an early evening Sunday and it was quiet at first but quickly became bustling as we progressed into our meal.  However, I must say that their indoor seating areas look great as well.  It looks like they're prepared to take on larger parties for special occasions but I'm sure a place like this will fill up quickly so a reservation is probably necessary to host a party.

Price wise, the selections were pretty decent and nothing too out of the ordinary.  Although considering that I was outside of Manhattan, I expected the price points to be a bit more friendly.  I ended up paying $50 when all was said and done for two dishes.  Of course, this included a slight over-tip for their plus service.

I've had great food here (mac & cheese, crab cakes) and wonderful, fresh cocktails, but I just can't stray too far from the $12.50 burger.

Leather (what is it, old bus?) bench seats, wooden tables and chairs that make me feel like I'm dining in what was a classy place during its hay-days decades ago, the classic bar painted in black, the sizable garden, even the bathrooms -- the design/décor of DuMont has character, and I like it.

Curse whoever posted the donuts picture, because it inspired me to stop in just to try them. But one late Friday night + my new fondness for drawn blinds and sleeping in, and I missed DuMont brunch hour, and the donuts.

Delicious cocktails -- Bee Sting is my top fave. DuMont (or DuMont Burger if DuMont is too busy) is a great spot.

I just don't get the hype?

My expectations must have been way too high? I Even heard people say things like "best burger in NYC" in previous reviews.

I am obviously in the minority here, however, my whole table was in agreement. Fun place, decent food, nothing to write home about or even anything more in this review.

dumont has wonderful service and great food that comes out quick.  i've been here for lunch and dinner and walked out happy both meals.  the staff is friendly, helpful, and certainly knowledgeable about the dishes they serve at the restaurant.

for lunch, i had the steak taco.  devoured that in under five minutes.  the glutton in me wishes they gave five rather than three tacos- i'd happily pay more for it, too.. if they also came with fries.  my friend had a burger and said that it was delicious.  the price tag on that tiny burger was a bit hefty though?

i ordered the mac and cheese the day i had dinner there.  itwasn't anything too special save the pasta itself that was cooked perfectly.  the dish as a whole was also a bit bland.. too creamy and not enough of the cheesy taste.  it lasted me for two meals afterwards though (albeit served with other things)!

very conveniently situated right off of the lorimer l..and a block away from where i live :D  i'd definitely go back for those juicy steak tacos.

This is the best mac and cheese I have tried ever. The pasta is cooked perfectly without being overdone, and the dish was moist on the inside and crispy on the top layer. They put the right ratio of bacon to macaroni without the former over powering the pasta.

I also ordered the cheeseburger, which was pretty swell in it's own right. The bun they used in combination with the cheese gave a slightly sweet flavor. You don't need ketchup since the burger is plenty flavorful enough. The fries were well seasoned, but it was the only thing that didn't really standout.

The staff from the hostess to the waiter were super friendly, and made us feel right at home. I'll be back again.

My favorite part about Dumont is the patio seating out back. It's the cutest patio I've ever seen!! It totally kicks Chicago's patio ass....

My food was pretty good. I only got a bagel with capers and lox, and a mimosa. My hangover was not such that I required something huge and greasy like a burger (this time!!). Next time I'm in Brooklyn, if weather permits, you will definitely find me on this patio.

This was the only reservation that was made for a week-long trip to NYC.  We were slightly late but when we got there, only a couple of parties were seated.  We opted for indoor seating, worried we'd get cold quickly if we sat in the garden (which I saw later and it looked lovely).
We each had a cocktail, the garden champagne cocktail and dill fresca.  Both were excellent but I preferred the champagne.
Everything sounded great but I was limited since I don't eat meat.  We split the Crispy Artichokes starter, I had the Dumac and cheese (sans bacon) and my friend had the grilled hanger steak.  The crispy artichokes...I wanted to move into it.  Everything about that dish was awesome and it was a good sized serving.
I'm never one to have issues with any mac and cheese but clearly some are better than others.  Dumont's version was decadent.  The only thing is that I'm sure the bacon would have really completed the dish.  It was so rich, it would have probably been nice to have the bacon flavor with it.  I could only get through half of the serving.  My friend left her plate completely clean and said she enjoyed her steak.
The restaurant filled up and by the end of the meal many people were there, but it didn't feel cramped at all.  It wasn't until I went to use the restroom that I realized the restaurant was as big as it was.  The wait staff was polite and attentive, even pouring water from the bottle that was already sitting on our table.  I'll definitely return.

I have to say, I was pretty excited about dining here, because my Dressler experience had been so fabulous.

My friends had raved about the mac and cheese - and well, it is pretty darn delicious.  Creamy, cheesy, gooey goodness and the pasta was pinwheels which surprised me - I don't know why? But the pasta did capture the sauce nicely.  (maybe that's why?)  and the tiny pieces of bacon were like little, tiny teeny treasures.

The burger was good - not the best I've had -- but I did ask for medium rare and it was delivered that way.  The fries were alright...I would say you won't be mad that you ordered the burger, but I'm not sure you'll leave saying 'it was the best I had.'  Perhaps the main detractor for me was sweet pickle chips.  I don't like sweet pickles, I'm a sour pickle person.  BUT they do put a sour pickle on the side.

The skate is delicious, so is the hangar steak - in fact, I would recommend those over the burger.

This place is very easy to get to - right off the L stop, the space is very cute, the garden bar is quaint, cute.  The bartender outside is really helpful and very nice -she gets a huge 2 thumbs up.

Service was efficient and polite - no complaints on that end.

I want to start off by mentioning that I have lived in the neighborhood for nine years.  I guess I could be considered a veteran and yes I have seen "the changes".  One of those changes has been in Dumont and not for the better.  Seriously this place has gone downhill.
I really lament the loss in quality of this little bistro.  What has gone from an enthusiastic staple is now more an obligatory fallback.

Yes the Mac-n-cheese is to die for and yes the outside is adorable but, are those two factors enough to return me to a regular...No!

Perhaps the owners are focusing their efforts on Dressler.
Perhaps its because they stopped writing specials on those individual blackboards, among other unique little touches that helped define this palce.
Perhaps its because they have stopped diversifying the specials.
Perhaps its because my food is out before I have even finished my first drink.
Perhaps it's the incredibly rude wait staff.

Truthfully I am just tired wondering why and am ready to move on to something new..........

I've had a few things here:  the steak and eggs, the burgers, and the mac n' cheese.  The burgers were a little small to be considered great.  The steak and eggs were tasty, if not a bit over-priced.  The mac n' cheese was amazing, through and through.  The ambiance of the place is really nice, it's the prices that make me wonder.

I have been a regular at DuMont for over six years now.  Have dinner, lunch or brunch here at least 1 to 2 times a week (live around the corner).  I can't think of one negative thing about this place.  The food is always perfection, they make a kick ass espresso martini and I love the wait staff.  By the way... the Huevo Rancheros is the best I have ever had.

In the other reviews you hear a lot of raves about the burgers and the mac and cheese.  They are right!  Both are outstanding.  However, the other menu options are pretty spectacular and well executed.  Only thing I would ask is to bring back the chicken sandwich with avocado.

I am actually thinking of moving out of Williamsburg and into Greenspoint.  One of the things that keep me here is DuMont.  It's just so nice to live so close to a really good restaurant.

I had this artichoke heart appetizer.  They fry the lemon!  Pretty darn tasty.  My friend's a big fan of this place.  He lives near it.  The people are friendly, the owner's nice.  I got another appetizer, spinach, and it was a good portion.  My friend swears by the burgers and I read somewhere they're good here as well.  It's real close to the L train, decent hours, has a cool little garden out back.  It also has a lot of strange nooks and crannies to sit/ hang out.  I always see couples in here, so it's probably a good date spot.

So I'm here in NY for my husbands best friend, Johnny's wedding.  He's actually gonna tie the knot tomorrow! Wow!

For dinner today I dined alone at Dumonts.  My hubby didn't wanna come in cuz he wasn't hungry and didn't wanna come in and not order.  So I felt kinda funny but I went in alone.  The hostess looks at me and says "umm, one?" and I go "umm, yeah, just me".  I told her I'd like to dine in the back because it was a beautiful day here in NY and the back is open air... well its kinda covered but not really, I can't explain it.  She gave me the choice of a table or bar and I picked the bar.  The guy gave me the menu's, one regular one and one special.  But I already knew what I wanted... the mac n cheese.

Look, Imma tell you straight.....it was so-so.  I've had better.  There, I said it.  I semi-apologize to all you regulars of Dumont's (Man, I think being out here in NYC has put me in a permanent fighting mood, sorry!)

The top of the mac n cheese was broiled, so that was nice and the inside was piping hot so that was another plus, but it just didn't have enough sharp cheesy flavor for me, or salt for that matter.  They offered freshly ground pepper when they brought it but I'm not sure that would have made it that much better.  The good thing is that they serve A LOT.  So it is enough for two.  I'll be munching on that later.

I also ordered a Watermelon and Cucumber Caipiroska which was fantabulous.  It had a great cucumber finish.. yum.  Very refreshing.

I was in and out in 30 minutes.  After that I walked over to the groom-to-be's moms house on Metropolitan for dessert.  She makes a mean cake.  Then we came home and he showed us a suit he had tailor-made for only $688 and he is forcing me to include all these details in this review in his wedding honor.  He also wants me to say "Williamsburg ROCKS"

Still in love with Dumont after so many visits. I was here recently and had such a delightful time! Not only was the food as amazing as ever, but also the staff, the atmosphere, and drinks did not disappoint one bit.

My friends and I shared the mac and cheese, which was delicious but heavy and 3 of us could not finish, the crabcake special which was also very good and I had the Cod special - so soft and fresh! - and lastly the chocolate desert which was splendid; I have a theory about only eating desert that is worth it - this was def. rich and chocolately and worth every single calorie.  The bartender gave our table free shots for celebrating a biday and  the waitress was very helpful and sweet. All in all, it was a great dinner!

I wouldn't have known about this place if it wasn't for a friend's birthday dinner there.  It's a cozy place and they utilize every inch of space well.

We originally had a party for 10, but two additional guests showed up without notice.  The staff was very accommodating and was able to seat us the best they could.  Our party was split into two tables and were back-to-back which was ok due to the circumstances.  I thought service overall was good.

We tried their signature dishes:
DuMac & Cheese - delish!!  it's listed as an entree, but we had it was an appetizer.  Everyone devoured!
DuMont Burger - good portion size and people who had it ... didn't dislike it or love it.
Braised Beef Short Rib - special of the night ... it was a tad bit salty and a lil'chewy for my taste.
Banana split tartufo - I'm not sure if I named the dessert correctly, but I think it's a close description.  It was the dessert special of the night.  It was great... wish I didn't had to share it.

Overall the food was ok.  I wouldn't mind coming back here again.

and the waitress for lunch with brown hair is rude and crazy and should not  work with people or in public

I just tried Dumont this weekend for the first time and I was so pleasantly surprised! I will definitely be going back!

For starters we tried a very fresh cilantro and tomato scallop ceviche that was just totally delicious and yummy. So fresh and so good! I also tried a bit of the crispy artichokes appetizer- while it was good I had some bad luck of grabbing a bite with a bit too much of the rough husk left in, but it was good nonetheless.

For my entree I had the grilled hanger steak with boulanger potatoes, spinach and bordelaise sauce and it was perfection!! The meat was so tasty and cooked perfectly, topped above the potatoes and spinach which absorbed all the bordelaise sauce. It was the perfect serving size and so damn delicious! I didn't get to try the other entrees my friends got because I loved my dish so much but they all seemed very happy with their choices.

Throughout our meal I also tried two of their Champagne drinks, the "Au Pair" (pear champagne with a ginger liqueur and pear puree) as well as the "Eve's Delight" which had a more apple-y vibe going on and both were really great.

All in all, a fabulous meal in a beautiful restaurant. I will definitely be going back to Dumont in the future!

They have really creative and yummy food here, with great ambiance.  Brunch is solid and it's the kinda place I go to when I know no where else to go because I know the food and drinks will be solid.  PLUS donuts are served with your brunch---DONUTS--that is worth at LEAST one star in and of itself.

I am not quite sure, but I would definitely go back here. I would even look forward to going back here. But the food is bad.

To go to the bad first.  We had two eggs benedict.  These were served with brioche.  What this taught me is that brioche and eggs benedict doesn't work.  You want a crisp, firm bread that offers some texture and base to the dish.  Brioche just sogs away, the flavour completely overwhelmed.  The ham used was a further slur on the dish.  Two thin slices of pre cut stuff, not the thick hewn chunk of ham you should have. Apart from criticizing the eggs and ham there is not much else to go on on an eggs benedict apart from the eggs, which *phew* were perfectly cooked.

Despite all of this the garden hidden out the back is a beautiful place.  Semi covered, partially fanned, with the staff eager to help you drink away in the stiffling NY summer. Next time I go I have the mac and cheese. And if that is bad, I just drink.

This was my last chance for Dumont.....imature wait staff, beautiful space that has lost its luster, the menu needs to be updated (same menu since they opened) how much skate are you allowed to take from the Gowanus Canal? Do not dine here. If you are in the area and hungry,  go down the street to barcade for a beer and a bag of chips.

this place has an AMAZING BURGER! when we got there, we walked into a tiny restaurant with no more than 10 tables. the host said "follow me" and so we did, past the bar, through a hallway that had another seating area off to the side and past that into a very large indoor / outdoor patio style dining room - it was awesome!

now on to the food, we started off with the roasted beets and goat cheese salad, which was really tasty. but now to the burger - it was cooked perfectly, juicy, and crispy on the outside but tender and soft on the inside. the meat had an excellent blend of seasonings and the brioche bun was delicious. the burger came with sliced pickles and a pickled onion, which was delicious.

the french fries were thick and crispy and also perfectly seasoned - i couldn't stop eating them it was so addicting.

overall this burger is fantastic - and really should be a 4.5 stars. if you're a burger fan, Dumont is worth the visit, regardless of where you live, you won't be disappointed.

I eat here often and I have always been impressed with Dumont's food quality.  I especially like their pulled pork sandwich and the stilton salad, always made with lots of care.  Their wine and cocktail list is also impressive, affordable, and seems tastefully selected.

Unfortunately, the service and hospitality here is lacking.  More than once, the staff here has made me feel like a total nuisance.  Today I went to have lunch by myself and asked to sit at the bar.  The server/host seemed really annoyed at the request and said "I guess..."  Not wanting to be a demanding customer, I asked what the matter was and the server explained that if I sat at the bar alone it would be really "awkward" for her because I was the only one seated at the bar while she was behind the bar doing stuff.

Maybe she felt like she would be obligated to talk to me while at the bar?  Was I intruding on her space by being a bar patron?  She should have just said that they don't seat the bar during lunch rather than make a customer feel intrusive.  I was so close to just walking out but was already embarassed enough.

I probably won't be back.  I don't want to hang out there anyway, I might make the staff feel really uncomfortable.

Nice atmosphere and delicious food, but WAY overpriced for what you get.

We ordered the half chicken and the Dumont burger.  Both were really good (especially the garlic mashed potatos).  However, for these two simple meals and two drinks, our tab was $90.  Also the restaurant is SO cramped that the hostess has to literally move tables for you to wedge into your seat.  A glass of water was knocked all over the place when our neighboring table got up to leave.  Bottom line: good but not worth it for the $$.

From their special halibut to the best mac & cheese ever, you can't go wrong with this place. Top it off with one of their amazing cocktails.

Many, many restaurants talk the talk ... but when it comes to truly gourmet mac n' cheese ... how many can walk the walk? not many I've found ...

Until I found Dumont.

I don't know who discovered this particular combination of 5 cheeses ... but they should be nominated for a nobel prize in chemistry. The ratio of tangy to creamy to nutty to sharp is outofthisworld. Sprinkle in some salty bacon, bake it to perfect and it's quite literally the dream meal of the fat girl that lives inside me. Inside all of us.

I'm getting ahead of myself ...

Group of 4 arrived on a bitterly cold night. Like many restaurants in and around New York, it's super crowded... the tables are too small... there's no room to move, etc... etc... etc... But the atmosphere is romantical ... there were many dates happening around us. Dim lights help make everyone look better. If that's not enough there's a really cool cocktail menu. If I wasn't poor I would have had the one with the green beans ... or the one with the ginger liquor. Or probably both.

But it's good I didn't since my date and I split the aforementioned mac n cheese ($14) and the burger ($13) ... The burger was great. Big, meaty hunk of beef. Homestyle. Beware that while my burger came out perfectly medium rare .... our friend's burger was majorly overcooked. Not sure how that happened. The pickles are a stand-out. 2 different kinds... about 6-8 yummy dill slices for the burger.... and a huge spicy pickle wedge as garnish. The waitress told us they are all made in-house. Very yummy.

If it were warmer we could have sat outside in the patio garden which was just adorable.

So ... big points for a tasty meal ... minus points for a drafty window seat, overcooked burger and cramped dining area ... it's close to being a 5 star, but I'm going to stick with 4 for now.

As a fan of Dressler, I expected DuMont to be at least halfway decent.  Sadly, I was monstrously disappointed by uninspired food, poor service, and wines by the glass that were akin to vinegar.  DuMont is clearly either past whatever prime it once had, or is simply yet another case of Hipster Hype groupthink.

The evening got off to a terrible start when the hostess immediately told us upon entering:  "You'll have to wait twenty minutes."  Not:  "Do you have a reservation?"  Because I HAD made a reservation, and when I told her this she said "OH, well, you won't have to wait twenty minutes then!"  Who doesn't ask for reservations first??

The "sauce" that came with the NY strip was a cup of separating brown goo with almost no flavor (despite containing green peppercorns), and the strip itself had almost no tenderness to it, causing my guest to overwork her jaw muscles to chew it.  The burger I ordered reminded me of the Wendy's commercials from decades ago, with an outsized bun and a lump of small meat in the middle, with hardly any flavor to it at all.  This is the famous DuMont burger, I thought; the one that they had to open another restaurant to serve them from??  It was, quite frankly, pathetic.

Our waiter was non-present, never coming back to check on us (despite checking on tables right next to us), never offering more wine, and nearly shoved us out the door without offering dessert - perhaps the overpriced yet clearly cheap quality food saves waiters the trouble of having to upsell drinks and dessert?  Only trust fund babies should be going to this restaurant, no one else can afford such expensive mediocrity.

A ridiculous disappointment all around - I won't ever be back.
