9 reviews for Duke House of Kabab
Tina R., are you serious? You must be trippin', girl! Ain't no noxious chemicals here!
I finally tried this place after missing out because they used to close so early. Now, they are open until at least 9:00 every night. It also took me a long time to want to try some kabab place other than my favorite, which is conveniently located right across the street.
This is a Persian (Iranian) kabab place (like Moby Dick), which means a slightly different flavor in the meats and rice than you would find at an Indian/Pakistani or Afghani kabab place. While different is sometimes good, here, it didn't impress. And the atmosphere, while pleasant, gave me a distinct feeling that this place was by Iranians, for Iranians.
The lamb kabab, while lightly marinaded, couldn't throw off the gamey flavor that lamb sometimes has. The chicken was juicy, but completely unmarinaded, and thus tasteless. The Chenjah (steak) kabab was much better, and featured tender, marinaded meat with a little char on it.
The rice was good, but will come out with a big pat of a butter-like substance on it unless you tell them to skip it, which is the advisable thing to do. Unfortunately, the rice will then come out fairly dry.
There were some nice features to this restaurant. They give you a little plate of onion, parsley and feta cheese with bread to start you off while you wait for your meat and rice and a little container of awesome green chili and cilantro sauce that is great on everything. The hummus was flavorful and came with a slick of fragrant olive oil on top of it.
One thing to remember is that you will not be allowed to eat in if you arrive within a half hour before closing. Evidently, this place never learned that you are supposed to give full service to everyone until the stated closing time - at which time you stop serving and wait for everyone to finish before you can lock up and leave. These guys believe the stated closing time is when they will be walking out the door, so don't expect to even be able to put in a to-go order within 10 minutes of closing. Ridiculous.
This was a decent alternative to my usually-preferred kabab places, but I don't think Halal Kabab House across the street has anything to worry about in the kabab wars.
So give it a shot, and stop all the hatin'! Peace, out.
Duke Kabab isn't anything special; I think Moby Dick is a tab better though. The Kabab is moist and the bread is good too.
I eat Kabobs all over Northern Virginia. This place is a great value for the money. All the items are first class. People are great, easy in and out parking, fresh food.
Their ice cream is frozen vanilla ice milk with rosewater. It is not good, seemed freezer burnt. Not a big desert place either. I still say it is a bargain.
This place is awesome. Don't let the lighted chinese take-away style menu fool you, any entree with meat is great. They provide a very traditional cilantro, feta, onion appetizer with all entrees and serve it with fresh baked tandoori style bread.
The desserts aren't worth trying, stick with the main courses...the owner/manager is a nice guy, he provided some sheets to pray salah and had no problem pointing the direction for us to pray in his dining room.
I would give this 0 stars if I can... why? because the smell was so bad in there we couldn't even stay long enough to order food.
there's a salon next door (in the same building) and the smell of perm/relaxer literally must permeate through the vent system. the restaurant smelled like perm, and for anyone who knows what that smells like... well, it's not very appealing when trying to order food, let alone eat it.
i would go back on one condition, the restaurant or salon moves.
Worst place to get kabob in the Metropolitan Area. It is down there with Moby Dicks. Chicken was dry and overcooked. Rice had like a oatmeal texture and the tahini sauce was the worst yet. AVOID!
This place is scrumtrualesent. (See Will Ferrell's James Lipton impersonation for a definition) Seriously though this place is great, I eat here all the time.
I haven't lived in the area in many years, but I still dream of Duke Kabab and that amazing rice. They got me addicted to putting sumac on everything, too! Amazing meat, amazing rice, amazing bread, clean and friendly people working there.
sorry, tina r.
your one star was clearly unwarranted. this place has fab kababs. The #9 white meat chicken (hold the butter on the rice) is beyond magnificent. of consistent quality, outrageous portions, and the best makers of this bread of all the kabab houses.
the chicken comes with grilled green peppers and tomatoes (what's with the nasty tomatoes at all these places?) rice, bread, and that unknown incredible green sauce. little plate with feta, raw onion (?), and parsley. awesome. amazing meal. i'm not much for kubideh, but i'm watching others order it a lot of times.
the crowd seems to be a group that knows iranian food.
the only reason that we go to moby dick's like every week instead of here is that this place is scary filthy.
and kabob palace on eads in arlington might've scared me away for the same reason. filthy.
but both?
yummy.
