I love their hamburgers. They are so good I don't get anything else, no fries or soda. So for $5 I get a great meal and I am full and satisfied.
I never eat hamburgers at McDonald, Wendy's or Burger King. They are made in some corporate lab to add the taste, texture, smell, etc. Read the book "Fast Food Nation."
I think Duchess is a real mom and pop hamburger joint and it is safe to eat here without fear of having a chemically made burger from a lab. I don't get sick from eating here, and when (decades ago) I used to eat at the big corporate hamburger places, I always got a headache and sick (so do other people).
So I go to Duchess maybe once a month (trying to eat healthier) but I love their burgers which are made of Angus (type of cow). I always do the drive in window because I use this place when I am in a hurry and need to eat fast. I hate to admit this, but I usually eat the burger while I'm driving and try not to spill (It's a juicy hamburger but not greasy, go figure that one out and let me know).
Duchess usually amazes outsiders on their first visit. Some can't grasp that a hamburger joint could actually serve liver & onion dinners (w/dinner roll.)
Duchess does deliver the goods and the dining area is a good place to chill back with a newspaper and kills some time.
The worst part of Duchess is the price. It's simply too expensive. You'll notice your wallet is a lot lighter after a trip. Also, avoid the onion rings at all costs. The fries are just acceptable. Douse with ketchup, salt and maybe pepper.
The chili-burger with onions is a man's sandwich.
I kind of miss the old style of Duchess, when they used to have posters of movies starring W.C. Fields.
Again another Fairfield institution, Duchess, has been competing against McDonald's across the street for decades. The chili dog with bacon, or the dog with bacon and raw onion, or, the big D cheese with mayo and raw onion are incredible. The chicken parm on a hard roll is excellent. The fries are super. Good milkshake. Liver bacon and onion on rye is offered as well as clam strip platters.
Try it you'll be back
This restaurant is located right next to my favorite Dunkin' Donuts in Fairfield, so Cal and I popped over for a quick dinner one night while we were hanging out at DD. I had the Fish sandwich meal and he had a Caesar salad. I thought that half of my sandwich was pretty dry, but pretty tasty. The fries were okay, just like any other fast food joint. Cal's salad was soaked in dressing and he wasn't too happy about that. Overall, it was okay.
