I'm reviewing this on behalf of my bf (we are two voices combined...lol). He has been going to the same stylist for years... literally 10+ or so and it was a huge deal for him to change things up. After several days of torture aka. trying to convince him to let me cut his hair (I'm decent), he did his research on Yelp and found Du Japon nearby. He went by himself and I was so nervous -- I constantly checked my phone for a 911 text message or an angry phone call but none came my way. Instead, I picked up the phone and heard pure happiness. He LOVED his new haircut. "I'm looking good" were his exact words.

His stylist is Teru and he's been going there ever since. It's funny because instead of him waiting for me at the hair salon, it's always me in the waiting room reading through piles of magazines as he's getting beautified.

Pros:
- Extreme attention to detail
- Gives you all day validation in the 5 star parking lot
- Really flexible if you're running late
- Up to date on their magazines :)

Yuki always comes to my rescue after acts of treachery whenever I go to other salons and realize their cut just isn't as clean. It feels awkward at first because you'll just hear her analyze your current haircut with the much accompanied "tsk tsk, oh noooo," but you have to realize it's not necessarily your fault since it wasn't you cutting your own hair [although I have once and I got the same reaction]

Throughout the beginning of this year I was going to a salon closer to my home. Although I loved the ambiance and friendliness of the place, at the end of the day, their cuts resulted in heavy sections sticking outta my head 1 month after my appointment. It was not a good look.

Driving the distance is definitely worth it when you're guaranteed a clean and precise cut. They do it so well, you can really walk out of your house a month later with no need to flat iron or curl your hair because your tresses automatically fall in all the right places.

It doesn't hurt that they're located in Little Tokyo, so you get your few hours of showing off your new do to the city with your free validated parking permit.

I have only had good experiences at Japanese hair salons and Du Japon does not disappoint.

I went to Toshi for a perm.  She was incredibly professional offering her opinion, but also listening to my concerns.

The perm/haircut was exactly what I expected with no major upsets or surprises.  The perm cost $150 but included a haircut.

I would definitely go back to Toshi!

I had my hair cut and permed here. I got the digital perm (I still have no idea what that is and how it's any different from a regular perm.)  Came out to $350 and I would say it was pretty much worth it, except after a month you could see that the right side was significantly bouncier than the left, so I was left with lopsided hair (still am, too cheap to get it fixed.)  The girls are very sweet and I got a nice head massage.  I'd probably go back.

Okay so after 5 1/2 months of not cutting my hair.  My hair, btw, kept it's shape and bounce for about 4 months before it got unruly.  That means Saiyo's precise cutting made it possible for my hair to look and stay healthy for a good 4 mos!!!

After 5 1/2 mos of not cutting my hair, I decided to come back to Du Japon.  I really wanted to try another Salon in Silverlake, but found out that they were charging $40, and that didn't include blowdrying my hair.  So I came back to Saiyo.  After all, she was amazing the first time.

She did not disappoint.  After my haircut, she styled my hair and curled it.  She asked me if I was doing anything special that night, and I said, "No, just a date with my bf."  And she teased, "Your bf like Japanese girl?  Because tonight I'll curl your hair and you look like Japanese girl."

Hahaha.

I walked out of that place looking HOT with new bangs and choppy new 'do.  But I was scared of washing my hair and realizing I can't style it on my own.

Fast forward to Saturday eve.  I step out of the bathroom with my blow dried hair, and I look mortified.  I was not used to bangs.  My boyfriend said, "babe, you look so scared!  You look amazing with your new hair."

I was thinking, Yeah right, you're saying that to get laid tonight.

BUT, when I came in to work Monday (even Tuesday), I got compliments from everyone about how good my hair looks!

I've come to terms with my bangs, and decided I love my new haircut!

I was wary about trying Du Japon because I didn't want to walk out with a crazy razored pop star hairdo (not that it wouldn't potentially look really hot). But my fears were calmed by Yuki as she carefully cut my hair with intense precision and went over it several times to ensure perfect layering and fringy-ness. I asked for volume and I got it. I asked for 2 inches off the bottom and she did exactly that, making little suggestions along the way.

The only odd part was that she didn't make any conversation (language barrier I assume...) and her assistant/shampoo girl just stood there staring at me while I got my haircut in complete silence (I went on a weekday afternoon and the place was completely empty).

Otherwise, I enjoyed my experience and plan on going back. $60 seems to be the going rate. They validate if you park in the lot. You'll find Du Japon next to the Pinkberry.

Wow!

An Asian male's review. (P.s. my photo is an old one!!! :))

Asian hair is the best thing in the world or the worst thing.
I went to Du Japon based on the only on a vague reputation but seriously, My expectations and more were fully met.

I was greeted warmly and asked to wait. Eventually Yuki came and asked me what I wanted. I wanted to keep my hair long but take the puffiness out of it. I started to look like a Bruce Lee, Greg Brady love child. I pointed to a long haired Japanese pop model's hair and said "that one" in a few months.

She looked at my head. tsk tsked a few times. She then told me it would be few months and she could thin the hair out but it would be very minor and slight. Hating the mop already I agreed.

After a relaxing wash, Yuki carefully and artfully cut my hair with thinning shears. Taking her time and being very precise. I went for another rinse. I sat back down and let her blow dry it. What I saw was miraculous.

It was the same length but flatter in the "right spots." She then took her time for the next 15 minutes to show me how to style it with certain products (I was using way too much before).

It was the care and the approach that sold me completely.
This isn't Supercuts guys. This is the real deal. You want to start your makeover. Come here first. Tip well. It's worth every penny.

(the background story below)

I've been wanting to grow out my hair forever. Finally for the last few months I've refrained from letting a scissor touch this head. Last few weeks at various gatherings I started getting multiple dumb comments like, "whoa Bruce lee Hair" or "the 70's are calling, they want their mop back." So I decided their was something I could do to it without cutting it short again.

Old lady + only use scissors + clean cut + Japanese Asian flair = du japon.

I would say they cleaned up my hair pretty majorly. I didn't get a hair cut for 3 months, and she just cut cut cut cut cut with ease. Cleaned it up majorly, although I would have preferred a bit longer. But so RELAXING, they gave me a head message, and I went straight to Heaven.

Anyways, they can cut a guy's hair pretty well. Oh, I had Yuki. Um...they're really careful in cutting the way you want.  So talk to them baby~! And, you'll get a good hair cut.

No more messiness~!

After a few weeks of unintentional hair negligence , my bangs took the last straw and screamed help.

Through yelp and last minute phone call, I discover this wonderful place.
Located just behind pinkberry in little tokyo, this gem is little hidden. yet worth every minute of your visit.

Sick of my hairstylist who kept changing salon, I decided to try a new place. And since I am a big fan of layer, i thought, what place can do it better than a Japanese salon.

Sayoi was certainly not disappointing. I was up for a regular layering here and there - nothing drastic. She listens v-e-r-y carefully to your request and take step by step cutting attempt that will satisfy you.

I paid $60, which i think is a good bargain, considering I've been spending too much in fancy salon that doesn't do justice (hint: Fred Segal Santa Monica).

This place is nothing fancy, but it does it job and it does it really well. Will certainly pop up next time!

Yay, I found a new salon.

If you've read my review on Taka, you know that I was pretty disappointed with my experience there.  I said I was going to try out Du Japon and today, I finally did.  I'm very very very pleased with my visit.  My stylist was Saiyo...my hair is super thin so I told her that I need some layers to give me volumn.  I also mentioned my past stylists seemed afraid to give me layers because I don't have a whole lot of hair.  First Saiyo dyed my hair, washed, sniped away at my wet hair...eh, it was nice but I didn't think there were enough layers.  But she wasn't done, Saiyo dried off my hair, blew dried it until it was nice and fluffy.  Once my hair was dry, she began layering away again.

All I gotta say is that I'm looking mighty spiffy now :)

I wanted to love Du Japon... especially when I've already been to Du Japon #2 and had the Takeshi experience!  But alas, it wasn't quite the same.  Perhaps it was because my expectations were already so high, perhaps it was because they double booked by accident (can you believe someone else name Lily called the day after I did?), perhaps it was because Siyo was in a hurry.  For some reason, there was some confusion with the appointment and she got double booked.  Regardless, the haircut was only okay.  The environment was fantastic.

I had planned on going back to Takeshi after a fabulous first experience and had been raving about how great it was to my girlfriends.  My girlfriend wanted to come along and since she worked in Downtown, we opted for the J-town location so she could just drive there after work.

The head massage was good but not great like Takeshi's.  The cut itself was fine - I pointed to a photo I liked and she went ahead to recreate it.  As usual, she only used scissors but the bangs turned out a lot shorter than I would have liked.  When I gasped, she mentioned that that was how the bangs in the photo was done and suggested a slightly different (hide the shorter parts of the bangs) style I could do.  Once she blow dryed and styled everything, it looked better but I never did completely get over the bangs.  When I got home and washed my hair, I noticed that the hair on the left side of my chin was a bit longer than the hair on the right side of my chin... On the plus side, she was ALOT faster than Takeshi and put this apple-scented pomade in my hair...  Everyone in this location speaks english and is very outgoing and fun.  We had random conversations about various topics and in general, had a good time.

There was even this one guy who was a huge anime fan that was getting his hair cut like Cloud from Final Fantasy (and Kingdom Hearts) for a convention the next day.

Not sure about my friend, but I'm going back to Takeshi next time around..  Would gladly forfit the great atmosphere for a haircut I love!  Although while I waited for my friend, she gave me some tea in a delicate ceramic cup with a little packaged cookie!

Sooo.... I'm a little biased, shall we say?

Had a haircut here recently. Called in for an appointment and was told my usual hair stylist, Yuki, was not there. The girl on the phone asked me if I was fine with someone else cutting my hair. I said okay. Brought in a picture and asked another girl if she could give me the same hairstyle. I asked her many questions and she said yes to everything. While she was cutting my hair she kept dropping her scissors. The top of my hair came out fluffy and I looked like Frankenstein. When I expressed my dissatisfaction she gave me attitude. I'm sorry but if I'm plopping down $50 for a haircut and throwing away my $300 hair straightening treatment I barely got three months ago I was seriously hoping for the result I wanted. And if it was impossible for her she should have been honest. What I got was a bunch of excuses at the end and a lame shoulder rub to keep me calm. Also, as I was about to leave two big guys came in. I doubt they were there to get trimmed since they both have buzz cuts. Felt like they were called just in case I threw a fit. Whatever. I'm never going back there again.

My all-time favorite salon. Teru is my hero! He knows what looks good and what doesn't. And the other staff (Sayo) is equally great. I usually go in when nobody is there, so we have funny conversations and there is no awkwardness at all. They're all so welcoming and very skilled at what they do.  I'll never go to a different salon again!

Yuki does listen to you and tries to cut hair to your wishes...except that's not always good  The first time I had these requests, and she tried to interject, but in the end I won, and it didn't look right.  So the second time I let her cut away w/o giving much input and I loved it!  She charges $60, which is average price to pay in LA I think.  The head massage is nice.  I like the small intimate setting, and the ppl there will get to know you, which is nice. It's not just an impersonal business.

I went to this place after reading so many reviews of Takeshi being so great with his hair cuts. I have to agree he does a great job at cutting hair because it's been two months and my hair still looks great. But I got my hair dyed and the color did not come out right! I wanted an Ash toned Dark Blonde and it came out PEACHY! I know hair color can't always come out perfectly but I was hoping he'd be able to fix it. He just said it will be hard and that was that! I would think he would admit in the beginning we wouldn't be able to get my desired color out so I didn't have to waste my time and money sitting there getting my hair peached out. Regardless, I fixed the color myself and his haircut still looks great....So 4 stars it is!

called in today at 9 am and booked an appointment from Sayo at 12:30... wanted to get a haircut and style my hair. i arrived at the place at 1 and i felt bad that i was so late but Sayo was very nice and understaning of that. She gave me japanese hair style books that I would like and I was able to find a similar style i wanted. Since my hair has been so untamed Sayo was kind of shocked and asked when was the last time i had a hair cut.. haha. She wanted me to get my hair straightened and get a haircut but since I had to go to work right after I just told her I wanted my haircut and would come later to get my hair chemically straightened..  So she flat ironed my hair first and chopped up my hair. It is way lighter and more flowy and organized. I had all different random lengths of layer and now it is more unified layers. (Although I do have to go back later during winter so my other random layers can grow enough to cut them in a proper way)

She flat ironed my hair, cut my bangs and my hair in all and even curled my hair in a cute way and the price in total was 60.
THe places I used to go to before styling hair itself was over 60. With the talent and the technique she has 60 in total in a bargain. SInce it is in downtown la the area and parking is crazy but there is a private parking building called "five star parking" right pass the Du Japon store. You get the ticket and later when you leave the salon don't forget to validate the ticket. (Then it is free :) )

I probably have to go again later to get a hair cut that I really truly like (This was just an emergency cut)   When I first left out of the place my hair was more in a mess and  i wasn't really satisfied but after waiting for few hours my hair got adjusted to the cut and now it looks way better now. I went to work and everyone was keep on complimenting how good I looked. Theyd idn't really know what was different but they knew something was different.

Also don't think because it is a Japanese hair salon there are only Japanese or other asians. There was one white girl coming in and getting her bob cut done too. She took a bunch of business cards when she left because she was held by many strangers asking where she has got her hair cut from.

Sayo was extremely nice and very cautious/aware of my hair. I was also glad that her english was fairly good because the last thing I want to do is gamble my hair with a hair dresser that I cannot communicate.

I have been going here for about 2 years now and this is my #1 place to get color and hair cut.  They really know how to cut Asian hair and their color technique is superb.  I've had many stylists, such as Yuki and Sayo work on my hair and they are all wonderful.  I love the customer service as they offer you tea or coffee, give great head massages while shampooing your hair, and give great styling tips to maintain the style you want.

I second Amy C's review!  I have been going to Taka for about a year now, ever since I chopped my hair off, but they didn't have any availabilities today and I needed my hair cut (I am only in town for the weekend, and I don't know of any Japanese hair salons in the Philadelphia area)/
I decided to change it up a bit and went to Du Japon in Little Tokyo, and I am so pleasantly surprised by how much I like my new cut!  Sayo really took care of me, I got a wonderful head massage and since I didn't know what I wanted really (my requirements are pretty lax: don't make my head look like a beach ball and try to cut it so that it doesn't bother my neck), she went for a stylish bob that really fits my face and head shape well.
She also put some product in and showed me how to use wax so that I can get that mushed look I always see on super-cool ppl.
All in all, 60 for a haircut is what I'm used to, so price wasn't too big of a deal.  I was treated very nicely and got a great hair cut, too.  Thank you Sayo- a great experience!  I will be returning to Du Japon for my next hair cut!
