Dear DSW on 14th,
First let me apologize for being "that girl" and walking in alone after 2 martinis. I had originally planned on visiting you with a friend, but was talked into a drink at a local bar (which of course turned into 2).
I want to thank you for not throwing my drunk ass out of the store (which is mainly due to my purchase). I also want to thank you for not fucking with the "drunk girl" in the sale section (which you very easily could have done).
My drunk shopping purchase was a success, and I made it home in one piece with my credit card in tact.
Thanks,
Drunk girl in aisle 2
How can you dedicate so much real estate to shoes and still only have two, maybe three pairs I wouldn't feel like a jackass putting on my feet?
No, seriously, how?
Everytime I go to this place it's a fucking madhouse.
First thing in the morning? MADHOUSE
15 mins before closing? MADHOUSE
The sale section is a mess. Even the regular aisles are a mess. UGGly boots thrown about. And up front they have like a designer special section stocked with heinous, hooker-esque heels in tiny sizes. Now who the hell wears a women's size 4 1/2 shoe? Isn't that a size for like, little girls? What little girl do you know that should be teetering around in $300 4inch heels?
The sales people are always very nice and helpful at least, but I'd rather go elsewhere.
Hmm.... so deceiving, I thought this DSW location was bigger til I went in. Selection wasn't very impressive. Is there a bigger location? I still need flat black leather boots.
You want shoes? You've got 'em here! What can I say, for ladies (mostly) and gents (limitedly), you have racks and racks of shoes... not always the best deals, but generally very good deals on all kinds of shoes. You know you can come if you want to find your pumps, sneaks, or just a pair of good old galoshes.
Lots of women shopping here, usually. Rarely see the guys, but then again, they're mostly either following girls around or they dart in and out with their shoe selection. Some places to sit for the guys waiting...
If you're a lady, by all means have at this place. On the other hand, if you're a gentleman looking for a nice pair of shoes at a decent price, look elsewhere.
Now please note that I do understand that in general women have a much stronger fascination and attachment to shoes than men do and generally tend to purchase shoes more often and in greater quantities, but that doesn't mean that we men don't appreciate a good pair of shoes and look for bargains on them as well. Also please note that I am speaking from the viewpoint of having only shopped for men's shoes.
When I first entered I was surprised at the size of the place. Think a warehouse only with paint on the walls and bigger windows. It feels like the equivalent of walking into a convention center show room albeit on a smaller scale. I was a little disillusioned to find out that about 90% of that showroom was devoted to women and men got the 2 isles over in the left side and the 1 clearance rack in the back left corner.
Upon browsing for shoes, I was also a bit disappointed that (a) their selection wasn't anything to write home about (even for a "discount" store) and (b) their shoes were comparably priced to any national retailer that you would otherwise buy shoes from.
There was nothing about this place that told me I should buy shoes from here before anywhere else, be it the price, the selection, or even the general appeal of the store.
I can't really speak for the women, but if you're a male, take your business elsewhere. You won't find much here that is worth the trip.
Sweet...I LOVE this place! I admit it...I'm a shoe-aholic. There I said it!
There's nothing like that quick fix of getting a new pair of shoes. I am currently getting treatment for my shoe addiction...NOT!!!
I'm talking about rows and rows and rows of glorious shoes! Here's where you can get the latest brand named shoes at discount prices. So if you think about it, you can buy 2 pairs for the price of 1. Don't forget to look at the sale rack in the back of the store, you can find shoes up to 70% off. I also need to mention the view of 14th Street Union Square Park is nice to gaze at while you are shoe shopping!
If you signup for their free member's card you will get coupons in the mail and emails for $10 off a purchase of $50.00...wowie!
A BIG compliement to the store manager Jose, he is a sweetheart who goes that extra mile to help a customer!
I Love Shoes!...Gimme Shoes!!
Not as great a selection as the monster warehouse out in Long Island, but a pretty decent collection nonetheless.
All I got to say is Marc by Marc Jacob pumps for under $50 bucks.
Score!
After many years of experience with the DSW chain, I have finally come to terms with my relationship with it. As with any relationship, it is complex and requires much thought and hard work, and after several struggles I can say that we've reached a happy medium.
Any trip to DSW is a hit or miss - in terms of the shoes they offer, the prices listed, and the sales they're having. They could be offering amazing sales on shoes that I wouldn't stoop to try on, while the shoes I pine after remain not-quite-discounted-enough to justify a purchase. Or I could wander randomly into the sale section and walk away with several pairs and a gleeful smile on my face. I'll never know what I'll find when I go in, so I never enter with expectations.
I personally prefer trying on shoes myself without someone hovering over me and making me feel guilty if I don't buy anything, so DSW is awesome. Sure, I can never find a salesperson if I ever need one, but I tend not to so whatever. What I like about this location is the Designer Section along the wall. Yes, most of the time they're still really expensive, and mostly hideous or just plain boring, but I still enjoy looking. And after a recent trip where I stumbled upon Louboutin pumps at 70% clearance, I'm glad I make sure to peruse that section before any other! The Louboutin thing doesn't happen often AT ALL, but that's why you just need to keep looking. And also why you should shop in NYC - no where else can something that randomly wonderful happen to a girl like me!
If you love this place, and claim you love shoes, then you cannot do both. Simply put, a sloppy hot mess. Better off buying from Pay Less, too bad people do not see how much of a rip off DSW is. Daffy's is better. The fact of the matter is, this place has become over exposed, and you rarely ever find New Yorkers in this hell hole. Only those who THINK they know where to find Guicci and Fendi shoes. HA! Try a sample sale, or a vintage store. hello? wake up new york?! I expect tourists to get trapped by this self proclaimed shoe store, but its terribly huge, they never have what you are looking for, and no one knows what they are talking about. Its like shopping at Walmart, sometimes you loose other times you make second place. so you loose anyway.
Make me happy, Kill me here
Shoes, so many shoes!!
OK its a nice building and a great location but lets face it ...its all about good deals on shoes and I always find them when I'm here!
Do not go on a weekend. It's just madness and totally not worth it. I usually go on a weekday night and it's fine. If I remember correctly, they don't restock over the weekend either, so everything gets super picked over by Sunday. Every size available is right under the display shoe, so no luck if it's not there. On the other hand, you never have to wait for a salesperson to go searching in the back stockroom, which I consider a plus. :)
DSW in Union Square was incredibly convenient for me when I lived off the L train, but I'm sure there's better elsewhere.
When they have all the boots out, things get really messy- the boots are falling over everywhere and there's not much room to have a lot of size variety. When they get rid of the boots, I feel like there's a much better selection and things aren't as hectic.
Every time I've been in DSW, there's always been at least one pair of casual or dressy shoes that have screamed out at me to try on and take home. You can't compare the women's section of shoes with the men's, however, since there are so many more selections for women, but still a decent variety for men. Notable brands for men include: Clark's, Giorgio Brutini, Steve Madden, and Ashton Grey, to name a few...and for athletic footwear brands such as New Balance, Puma, Saucony, Converse, Columbia, and Reebok (think I saw Adidas as well). For whatever reason, I've always found the quality of athletic footwear to be skimpy and cheap, even for such high-end brands...although regular shoes are pretty decent (if you can find your size, which can be a challenge, especially if you are one of those half-sized people).
Overall, you can't argue about the prices, that's for sure.
IF you are guy shopping for shoes here - Good luck, the styles are so blah and its like People wear that?
IF you a women shopping here - HEAVEN
The staff is not the most easiest found but the shoe selection for women is great... isles upon isles of SHOES....
If you are a man dragged here be ready to look for a seat because you will be a while here..
Only 2 star because no good guy shoes and i can not really wear high heals to work...

Oh sorry, I was just daydreaming about shoes.

Why is it that every pair of shoes I actually LIKE are not available in my size!? I wear a 6.5

Ugh. So one of the heels on those red patent leather Italian stilletos actually BROKE OFF within a month or two of non-regular wearing. And once I got it repaired, it broke off again within a couple of wearings. I think this is the definition of "structurally unsound."
That said...I still give this place pretty good vibes overall. Although I went this past weekend and experienced a lot more "these shoes suck....these shoes suck....these shoes suck!" than "these shoes rule!," I nevertheless have to hand it to them for a great rewards program and pretty impressive sales.

Sure, next to designer boutiques these shoes are cheap, but not the more universal 'cheap' I was expecting. After an hour and a half I hadn't found a single thing I considered a deal. Went to Sims in the Financial District and within ten minutes found exactly what I wanted for a very reasonable price. I also prefer Filene's Basement in the UWS to DSW.
But hey, if you think a pair of boots are worth $500 because they're half off, you're reading the wrong review. If you're willing to shell out the dough, then you will probably appreciate the selection and the not blood-of-your-first-born prices.
If for nothing else, I come here looking for sneakers. I've bought a couple pairs of Pumas here that I love and are at least $10 less than the Puma store or another other place. And DSW has colors that are no longer available to boot!
Just don't go here looking for great John Varvatos boots, Gucci moccasins, or super sporty Prada lace ups. This isn't the place for that.
Again: NICE KICKS.
That's what this place is good for!
I love this place.
Anytime I can get designer shoes on clearance, I'm down. Therefore I am DOWN with DSW.
I easily drop a couple hundred in here at a time so I only allow myself to go once in a blue moon but when I do I head straight back to the clearance rack...where size 8 is abundant. (YES!) I'm a diehard fan.
Word.
Awful service. Awful. Totally picked over. Funky-smelling. That being said, after searching through stacks of disorganized shoes, I finally found a pair in my size and an appropriate color worth purchasing. $64.95 later, I doubt that I will return unless desperate.
When you first walk in, the immediate thought is, "ye gods! There a trazillion different shoes here! Oh my, do I lie down first or dive in???"
Then you wander around and start to realize that no Dorothy, you are in Kansas, there aren't a grazillion different styles of shoes, there's a lot fo shoes, and mostly in the same style.
Serious let down. I thought I'd be walking into a crack house of shoe deals, shoe heaven, shoe lust.. Instead I found shoes that are cheaper elsewhere, sales help that loves to (a) pass you on to someone else while (b) giving you confusing or non-existent store policy information.
If you trot on up to Filene's Basement (in the same building) you'll find the same shoes there with a small price point difference.
Been shopping at DSW since I lived in Chicago, it's highly addictive. I can spend hours here on the weekends just shoe shopping. They have great deals, a great selection, and its usually not too crowded for me.
I love shopping here so much, that I only allow myself one trip here a month. I spend way too much money.
They also have an okay selection of purses, I found my "work" bag here and also got a great deal on a gym bag.
I need new shoes, maybe I will go on Saturday...
Buying shoes at retail locations is quite a challenge. You could stick with department stores, or you could venture out to the likes of DSW, David Z, and others.
I conjure up images of large suburban stores when at the DSW locations at Union Square and Battery Park. Clearly space is not at a premium here. I think this store format is doomed for failure in Manhattan, unless the prices are hiked up to cover for the space.
I don't find the variety or the prices to be particularly attractive at DSW. Most of the styles are tired and boring, maybe with the exception of designer women's shoes (that I am not qualified to comment on).
They have separate collections of clearance items...you will be lucky to find anything of value there though.
All in all, an undifferentiated, ordinary shopping experience.
I am a huge fan of DSW! It has rows and rows of beautiful shoes at decent prices. They seem to follow the trends, and they have a large selection of boots. The store is also well organized. This is one of the only places I buy shoes at.
What I love best about DSW is that you don't have to ask a salesperson to get you whatever shoe in your size. They have aisles of shoes on display, and they have the boxes of shoes right under the display. That way if you like a shoe, but they don't have your size you can just move on. I wear a size 11, so I find that very convenient!
I love shoes. I am cheap. Thus, I love DSW.
I have no use for snooty, designer dress shoes, I only want sneakers and boots. The key to DSW is to completely pass up the main floor and go straight to the clearance section in the back. Come back often. If there is something you like but aren't willing to pay for, wait for a while, and it might show up in the clearance section eventually. Markdowns are color coded (red, purple, green,) according to the percentage of the discount.
It's just like an Easter egg hunt!
If you are a runner, you can actually find real running shoes here (not the "fashion" models not intended for running, though you can find those too,) for very cheap sometimes in the clearance section. But you must be patient and persistent and come back often.
The music going up the escalator drives me nuts, though.
OMG shoes! Oh noes, they don't have my bigfoot size :(
I've literally almost had anxiety attacks in this store because of how busy and overwhelming it is. Everything is one big leather and shoelace blur after awhile. Nothing looks cute eventually simply because of overload.
Clearance rack won't actually save you money because you find too many pairs for "cheap" and spend a fortune, but you'll hardly wear them because they weren't so cute to begin with...that's why they were on clearance.
I like the White Plains location better (when I can make it there once every year and a half). Much more relaxed, organized and stocked with sizes and variety.
I got a pair of Ben Sherman's with little purple guitars on them for 42 bucks and have been happy as a clam ever since. A gay clam. A little gay clam that likes rock 'n' roll.
Wait... I think clams are hermaphroditic. But I'm so hermaphroditic that I'm gay. A little so-hermaphroditic-that-I'm-gay clam that likes rock 'n' roll wearing cute shoes with purple guitars on them. Thanks DSW!
I love shoes...I love boots..and I love trying shoes on, and dreaming about owning them.
And so, one recent rainy dreary afternoon, I wandered into DSW and started salivating at their clearance rack...which, since this is the prime location of DSW, included $400 shoes...20% off. (Sorry, that's still way out of my range!)
But, I still love it here, and I love the bargains I sometimes get...and the rows of eye candy...which I'm starting to get sort of warm thinking about right now...
Rows and rows of shoes. A good lot I would never wear. But I did find black knee-length leather Frye boots for $165, so I still pop my head in to look around once in awhile though I almost always come out empty-handed.
I was fine with this store until my friend and I had to go in to return something.
I had gotten a purse that was on clearance, and when my friend and I left the store we realized that she hadn't gotten the clearance price. This would have been a non-issue, and was, except since she came to return a pair of shoes she also decided to get the money back on the purse.
The cashier was a dummy, or so it seemed. She didn't believe that the bag was clearance since there weren't anymore on the sales floor. But we purchased it a week ago, and they no longer have the purse.. Now I'm not a genius, but aren't clearance items usually the ones they are trying to get rid of and before taking them off the sale floor they lower the price ridiculously?
Anyhow, the cashier needed the assistance of two salespeople to configure the transaction and credit my friend's card for the lousy $25.
Retard.
I used to be anti-DSW. Don't get me wrong, I'm a first-rate bargain shopper. But DSW used to have rows and rows of crap brand shoes not worth even trying on. They must have changed their strategy over the last few years, because lately, they are carrying better and more types of shoes.
Now, I've become a convert. I love the rows and rows of shoes that I can peruse quickly. I love the discount section in the back that make me feel like a winner when I find something I like. I've bought several pairs of shoes here in the last year and they keep me coming back with their points reward program. Yay for DSW!
95% of my shoe purchases have been through Zappos, and the remaining 5% is from DSW. When free overnight shipping isn't quick enough, I hit up this joint.
Tip: Do not stroll aisle to aisle, do not stop at the bag section. Head straight for the clearance racks.
I love this DSW. It's so big and loaded with lots of styles and price points. Plus, they have a ton of bags! They always have a ton of cashiers on the registers so the line moves very quickly.
The best thing about the store though is their bathroom! Need a public restroom that doesn't wreak ? Hit up DSW!
Never buying shoes anywhere else again!
I have tons of trouble finding shoes that fit. It takes forever, and dealing with overworked or disinterested salespeople is awful (not to mention the extra time it takes to "check in the back" for sizes). DSW actually has all of its shoes out on racks, there is no back room, there seemed to be no salespeople, and I tried on about 40 pairs of shoes in less than an hour.
Granted, I didn't buy anything, but that's only because I have stupid feet.
I have found this DSW to be either great or a disappointment.
I've seen amazing Prada and Miu Miu shoes in the clearance racks sadly not in my wee size. It's worth a looksy if you're in the neighborhood and have some time to kill.
I seriously avoid going to any stores in the Union Square area due to the massive amount of ppl there! It is no different from Times Square IMO and truly, truly dizzying.
This DSW almost always has something for me to buy and although I work close to the DSW in Battery Park, which offers a very stress free shopping experience, I don't think the selection there is nearly as vast as this location.
It's always chaotic at this location and I feel for the salespeople who work here because shoes are all over the floor, boxes are all disorganized and it's pure madness. Despite the disarray, the sales staff are generally helpful, some even smile and they keep the cashier line moving pretty briskly.
It also helps that I am a DSW member and receive their $10-$20 off coupons which works as an incentive for me to revisit DSW.
I love DSW, but this location always makes me feel like I'm in the 'burbs. And that ain't pretty.
*It's ALWAYS mobbed no matter what the time of day or year.
*Those mobbing it seem to not realize that their fat mom-jean clad asses are taking up 2/3 of the aisle space.
*Those mobbing it seem to have no moral issue with stopping every four feet and scratching their head, aforementioned mom-jean clad ass or leg and again blocking aforementioned aisle
I really need to only go there after yoga and a relaxing cup of tea. But the deals keep me coming back, yo.
Totally overrated store. The shoes can be found cheaper somewhere else. First thing you do when you come here, go straight to the back of the store where the clearance shoes are, and if they don't have anything you like, make like a ball and bounce!
Oh, how I love shoes! I love them in the morning, and in the afternoon. I love them in the evening, underneath the moon...
I now shop for shoes exclusively at DSW. Designer name brand shoes, reasonable prices, and an almost overwhelming selection! They have a delightful little "member rewards card" program (free to join, free to use!) that keeps me coming back, because for every certain amount of money you spend, you are rewarded with gift certificates!
This particular DSW, however, is not my number-one-favorite of the two I frequent (the other one I go to is in Brooklyn at the Atlantic Terminal mall). For some reason, perhaps because it is in Union Square, one of the busiest shopping areas in the city, I don't find as many things that I like. They also sometimes run out of common sizes in popular styles. So -- sometimes I come wanting to buy something, then I strike out, and leave empty handed. But... it's probably better that way.
