Giving full disclosure, I am a writer and performer at the DSI Comedy Theater. But here is why DSI is so awesome.
I moved here in June from Virginia. However, I had been coming down to DSI often to visit and guest-perform. DSI made me feel so welcome and my transition to a new place was made THAT much easier.
There are such a wide variety of shows at DSI that it is GUARANTEED you will go home happy. Ticket prices are affordable and the seating is uber comfortable.
Get there early for the FREE show on Friday's at 9:30PM cause seats fill up fast!
Take a class. It will boost your confidence, give you better conversation skills, and at the end, you'll be a comedy rockstar.
DSI is a really fun way to spend an evening. I have never seen a bad show here, and I hear the classes are great too. Highly recommend DSI, GO THERE!
Really, just fantastic local comedy in a huge variety of forms. Hard to beat.
I used to run a humor magazine in the area and we did some partnerships with DSI for a while, so I got to know the theater pretty well, and I have some very talented friends who used to work with them. This is some amazingly good stuff, and they're very dedicated to their work. It's hard to find a time when something isn't going on in DSI, and if you wait long enough (a couple weeks, max) then you're sure to find something you like.
Their strongest work seems to be their short-form improv, and I'm a fan of their more regular shows as opposed to their specials like the 24 hour comedy festival and things. You won't find a better show in Chapel Hill.
Smoke-free comedy in an intimate theater setting. It's perfect for a yuppie like me who likes to drink, laugh, but doesn't want to smell like an ash tray. It's tough to find, but we really enjoyed the improv shows. We'll be back.
There is no other place for improv comedy in North Carolina as good as dsi comedy theater.
I've been watching shows at dsi comedy theater for the past 3 year and I still haven't had enough. The theater emanates the sort of fun/crazy/welcoming atmosphere that you won't find at any bar, and certainly nowhere else in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area.
If you haven't already been, you have have have to go.
Hands down, this is one of the best places for live entertainment in the Triangle.
I moved to this area from Chicago, where I used to go to improv theaters all the time. I can honestly say DSI ranks right up there with the best of them, and it's right here in Carrboro! If you like comedy, or live theater in general, DSI is a must-see for you.
The place has a great atmosphere for just about anyone. For your first time, I highly recommend seeing the main-stage improv show (called "Mister Diplomat"). It takes place every Friday at 9:30pm.
Definitely check this one out. They're hilarious!
I have a REALLY boring and stressful job... Dirty South Comedy Theater has been my salvation.
Within walking distance of everything in Carrboro and the West side of downtown Chapel Hill, Dirty South is the place to go and let off some stream though enjoying some live entertainment.
With low ticket prices ($10, $8 for students) it's a very affordable way to impress friends and dates. There is a show for every taste: ComedySportz (think Whose Line is it Anyway?) for families and Best Show Ever for more mature audiences and even more.
Every first Thursday of the month, Standup comedians are welcome to sign up and perform! I liked this place so much, I signed up for classes with the Training Center and now I get to perform sometimes too!
It is so much fun and such a great experience with friendly staff and amazingly talented performers.
I live in NYC, but whenever I get back to my hometown, DSI has become a must-stop spot for smart comedy.
Smart laughs and a unique night out--with beer.
This place rocks.
If only performers write reviews, then this place is going to run away with a five star rating.
People young and old can find something for their tastes at this theater, but when the clock strikes 9:30pm, anything goes. Check out inspired and original shows from the areas funniest people (PT Scarborough is a Movie is akin to watching John Belushi before the pressure got to him)
Papa Fibonacci may be the funniest group of college kids on the planet.
Also, the theater puts on the largest improv festival in the country every February (DSIF, with its 8th installment coming in 2008) that brings top talent from around the country to put on a ridiculous amount of shows over the funniest 6 days since The Creation.
There is no better place to go for live entertainment in the Triangle. There's a show for everyone, and since its improv, no two shows are the same.
Whether you're a family, college student, or teenager, DSI has a great atmosphere and loads of fun at every moment.
Best Bets:
Friday Night @ 9:30 - Mister Diplomat (local celebrities / musical guest s relate real life stories to inspire hilarious improv)
Saturday Night @ 7:30 - ComedySportz (all ages)

Carrboro's only comedy theater, this is a great place with great classes. When I meet people and they tell me they haven't ever been, I say - what are you waiting for? Get over there for the most affordable live comedy around!
The Dirty South Comedy Theater is an 84-seat non-smoking theater located near Chapel Hill, NC. They put on around 7 shows a week and they've got a pretty amazing Comedy Training Center where they offer new classes every month in the art of improvisation and sketch comedy.
Zach Ward, Owner and Executive Producer of DSI, has trained improv talent featured on television (Jeff Richards, Saturday Night Live, MADtv), the big screen (Maddy Curley, Disney's Stick it) . . . and students featured all over the world.
It's pretty amazing how this place has popped up in what might initially seem like an unlikely location, but the quality of the shows is there. There's a bunch of funny ass people there too. You can't get this experience anywhere in the triangle.
It's great for a date night, or just to let off some steam on the weekends.
(Full disclosure: I'm a performer there.)
Great great fun, different shows for different age groups, but always hilarious! The size and interior of DSI is just right, although you might have trouble finding it the first time. Take the family out to Comedy Sportz (maybe a little expensive at $10) or try one of the more adult shows. DSI is tons of fun and I go every chance I get.
Awesome place. Has become one of our favorite places to spend a night out in Chapel Hill - Carrboro. I ALWAYS laugh my ass off. What is so special about this place is that everyone, all of the company, lives and breathes improv. There's no doubt it's in their blood. All are welcome and it's so inviting, and unintimidating. If you are in CH, you should definitely go there.
A couple years ago, I got pretty enveloped in the DSI culture since one of my best friends was really involved at the theater, performing and working. Though she's moved away to another state, I still have friends who take classes and do regular improv and stand-up there. So I've, by now, attended a ton of shows (and gradually learned that I much prefer short-form over long-form improv, though I think some believe that speaks to my level of comic adolescence). Anyway, having always been a huge fan of CHIPs, I was thrilled when this little theater opened up. And I think it's even more amazing how the community supports it, how it's grown in terms of programming and in bringing other fledgling comics on board and helping them grow. They also do some amazing events -- everything from 24-hour comic fundraisers to the annual Dirty South festival. The theater is somewhat limited by its space, so seating is not ideal and there are a few poles that stand amidst the audience. They do now sell beer and snacks, which is great. Food :and: funny -- woohoo!
