I absolutely love fish 'n chips, but I've always had a hard time finding them here in New York City. Oh there are plenty of burger places (e.g. "1-2-3 Burger Shot Beer", which is just right next door), but fish 'n chips just don't seem to be a major selling point for bars unlike burgers, happy hours, drink specials, scantily clad serving staff or anything else really. Seriously, when was the last time you saw a sign in front of a bar that said "Fish 'n Chips for $x"? I find this to be unfortunate so i will start to amend this problem by announcing that this bar has fish and chips.
This place is somewhat sadly positioned to be the overflow room for the much more popular "1-2-3 Burger Shot Beer" (see the above comment on publicity points for bars). I must confess that's exactly how I wound up here. My friends and I attempted to go to the burger, shot, and beer venue, but we were put off by a dense, sweaty crowd of Yankee fans. Instead of having the word Jeter stuffed in our faces, we decided to leave and go to the closest bar with a cool name, and how can you get a name cooler than Druids?
This place is a little expensive for an Irish pub, but it's also probably the nicest pub I've ever seen. The tables have white tablecloths (!!!) neatly draped over them and there's a gorgeous patio in the back where there's a wall decorated in hippie garbage art. If you're willing to take the hit, this will probably make the most pleasant experience at an Irish pub.
Oh and did I mention that they have fish 'n chips?
Cozy bar with great food & friendly staff. If I was single and lived in Hell's Kitchen, I'd be here every night.
Nice outdoor drink spot. Kinda out there location-wise, which keeps it minimally crowded. That's nice.
Otherwise not extraordinary, but good.
Stopped in briefly for drinks, mmm yea kinda pricey for your average Irish pub. Didn't try any food but they did have a decent selection of whiskey and single malts. Just a few of the regular Irish imports on draft, nice service though.
Whenever I see a show at Ensemble Studio Theater that my actor friends are in, we inevitably end up here. In the warmer months, the back garden is quite nice, if a bit small.
The burgers are pretty good and so are the salads, but unfortunately, nothing else on the menu really inspires me to order it. Could be that the prices are a bit steep (apps around $10, entrees hovering in the $20 range), but since there are so few dining options along this avenue, you're pretty much stuck dining here. I tried the lobster ravioli appetizer once and found the pasta to be a bit tough and skimpy on the lobster. So if you do have to eat here, just stick with a burger. I much prefer walking over a few blocks to Pam's Real Thai, but it's sometimes hard to herd a large group together to make the short trek. Convenience is Druid's biggest asset. Oh, and Guinness, beer and wine too.
In short, Druid's is a much better bar than restaurant. It's good for a post-theater drink 'n discuss spot, but that's pretty much it.
we stumbled upon this place on our way to a citysights tour. For just wondering in somewhere it hit the spot. It was a bit over priced for what it was but the service was great and the food was great. We ordered a grilled chicken and mozzerela panini with a basil pesto sauce. It was really good and the salad and potatoe wedges were GREAT! You could for sure split this meal with another person if you weren't starving to death.
Sit outside while you can in the great little "garden" area tucked in the back. Nice meals, nice pours. White table cloth, but don't feel like you have to get dressed up.
10th Avenue is underrated, I tell you.
Crap-tastic.
OK. Seriously. It's called Druids. What are you thinking it's going to be?
Like Stone Henge? Lots of wood? At least maybe...I don't know...Celtic?
No...it's got horrible colored walls with, what appear to be, American South-West decorations.
The drinks are way expensive considering this bar is at the corner of nowhere and nowhere.
I know a lot of people from Ars Nova and the theatres in this area end up here....but...why....I mean come on...just walk over to 9th avenue and there are about ten better bars.
This is one of my favorite hangs in my hood. It you want to carry on a conversation with a friend (or date) without a loud, blaring TV in the background, and you want service that is polite and courteous to the point of being almost transparent, this is the place to go. I would say the crowd is average, not necessarily hip (at least when I've been there), but a perfectly acceptable place to grab a beer with a friend. I've never tried their food, so I can't comment, but it seems a little pricey for what it is.
This place was an old standby when I lived in Hell's Kitchen and I sometimes go back there. I think of it as an upscale irish pub. I could show up in a suit after work, or in jeans, and always felt welcome. You have to know what to order. The steak and the lamb chops are both excellent, as is the vodka and lobster ravioli. Summer time is a better time for Druids when the garden is open. NB: Smoking is tolerated in the garden.
Sunday afternoon, garden patio complete with voodoowacky art and good pours - who can complain ooh and try my new favorite drink whiskey and tonic - yeah the Irish bartender MAY ask you to leave, but it's tasty is she does not it's the perfect summer afternoon libation
Give me a garden in which I can sit for as long as they'll have me and I'm good. I like having this nice option on Tenth avenue, as opposed to Ninth which gets a little crowded. It's unexpected and the prices are great for pub food, salads and sandwiches. They are missing some key items that one would expect, fish and chips, pate. On the subject of their 'chips' they do potato cubes (which they call potato wedges). This is confusing. Also, the burger should be ordered 2 below what you'd want. My medium came out well. My hope is that this gets passed along because this really is a great gem in the HK hood.
