Great ambience - prob the best in PDX. Staff friendly and helpful. Coffee is delish.
I'm not expecting a frap, but it would be nice to have an iced coffee offering rather than just iced Americanos.
Outdoor seating is cool, just note that the southernmost table on the west side gets dripped on by the air conditioner above.
More of a quiet, contemplative place than one for kids, and I've found it difficult to maneuver a stroller inside.
The location and ambience far outweigh any of these other things, though. A "must" visit.
Good coffee? Decent, yes.
Vegan/Vegetarian snacks? Check (Power Burger - YUM!)
Pastries? Check
Nice staff? Aw yeah.
Plenty of cozy room to sit and chill? Ding!
Open at 7am on Saturday to save my caffeine-deficient ass? That's worth at least 4-stars alone.
I adore this place. It's got lots of comfy seating, free wifi, great food, friendly peeps, and fine service. It's in a great location, too.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is that I wish they'd rearrange a little so it's not so crowded by the counter -- it's a pain to get around in there. Also -- and I can't blame them for this -- it can get a little overrun by the annoying Chapman moms in there at times, or by stroller-pushing parents who think nothing of clogging up the place with their offspring. That's a little annoying, but Dragonfly is worth it anyway.
Delicious neighborhood coffee shop. Their benches provide for prime intersection viewing.
We had a regular coffee right before closing on Saturday, right before 5:00PM. The staff was friendly, the coffee is good and the atmosphere is homey; everything a true neighborhood coffee shop should be. Places like this remind me I liked Caribou Coffee in the first place.
It's a nice enough place to hang out, and their coffee and food are fine, but I'm giving it 3 stars for the following reasons:
#1 - It's more expensive than other coffee shops for no good reason that I can tell. This goes for drinks and food
#2 - They close at 5pm. A lot of places in Portland are lame like that, but this is probably the worst example.
#3 - On the two occasions that I've tried to use it, their WiFi has been horribly slow and prone to disconnects. Maybe that was just bad luck.
I probably sound overly harsh on the place. It's not bad by any means, and I would go back. There's just cheaper places that I could go that don't close so early.
Hello, Dragonfly, you coy little gem!
Nestled on the way-far end of TrendyThird, this coffeehouse (a) lives up to the Yelp hype, and (b) impressively strays away from the often obnoxious attitude of many of the surrounding places.
Quaint. Can be crowded. Cute...they ask that people make new friends and sit at a table with strangers when they're particularly busy. Homey. Part urban chic (vegan pastries), part country charm (homemade granola, oat pancake weekends), very (very) friendly.
The coffee, unfortunately, was simply okay for me. It tasted as if the shots had expired. Boo!
However, while I was there, I also grabbed some lunch. And while the sandwiches cost a pretty penny, the turkey-provolone had thick-cut turkey, fresh veggies, and delicious pesto...all on some of Dave's bread. Yum!
Next time I'm in Northwest, I might just make the trek downward and stop here again!
I work in NW Portland part of the time and when I can I stop by the Dragonfly Coffee shop. I'm a big fan of local shops and this is a big favorite of mine. The staff are friendly, the coffee is very good and well prepared, but what caught my attention was the best fruit and bran muffins in town. (OK, I've not tried every place in town but I have tried about 93% of them at last count.)
Anyway, I arrive early and the muffins are hot from their oven. They prep and bake them there. They're loaded with fruit and the mix changes daily. If you're lucky you'll hit Dragonfly when they've made blackberry or date walnut muffins. These things are big, with a crisp top and fairly crisp bottom. (They don't use paper muffin cups so the bottoms aren't soft and soggy.) A muffin and a triple latte and my morning is off to a great start.
Their sandwiches, bagel toppings, and more are all a cut above what's found in other shops. Like virtually all shops there's free wi-fi. There's a variety of comfortable seating, outdoor tables under an awning, open windows in the summer, and friendly people.
Definitely a cool spot to hang out, read, laptop, whatever. Several tables outside allow for al-fresco coffee-ing when the weather is agreeable.
I wasn't blown away by the coffee, though. A little weak for my liking. Perhaps I got an off batch. They do have a great assortment of funky mugs (mine looked like a big, red corporate mug... teamwork!). I'll stop back in for another coffee and a pastry that everyone here seems to rave about. Just another excuse to visit portland again!
I love this cafe! It has a lot of windows, is airy and bright, well decorated and clean. It feels like you are walking in to someone's living room, it's so comfortable. Every time I've been here, the staff has been so friendly and cheerful - no "I'm too good to be working here" attitude. They have rice milk which is a huge plus because I love my rice milk latte! (When will people realize that soy milk is baaad for you?) They have free wi-fi, sandwiches, muffins and waffles too. I like to come here to read or study because the people who come here are doing the same - it's mellow, relaxed and mature. No loud, overbearing music either. Wow, what a concept!
My last roommate visited Dragonfly EVERYDAY before work and when I managed to get up before the crack of 9, I would join her. When she walked in she was always greeted warmly by each of the baristas, and with a single nod her latte with whip would be lovingly made.
I remember enviously thinking: "I want THIS to be my coffee shop. Monica and Rachel and Ross have one - and now my roommate has one too..."
My envy was completely justifiable...Dragonfly just has "IT". Not only great coffee, not only an extensive menu that includes to-die-for oat waffles and a vegan protein bar that I swear by, not only friendly barristas, free wi-fi, and comfortable seating - but that "IT" factor that you can't quite put your finger on.
"IT" makes you want to stay, want to be a part of what they are doing, and in my roomie's case - it makes you want to go everyday! Dragonfly is a must for guests and relatives, and a fantastic way to start a lazy Saturday or Sunday morning.
I find it hilarious that I'm sitting here in Dragonfly for the first time thinking about how much it seems like Central Perk on friends....only to open my laptop, log onto yelp, and see that almost every yelper so far has written that exact same thought!
So, I'm not alone in my love for the comfy interior, free wi-fi and hot, hot coffee.
I hesitate on giving five full stars due to the fact that I paid 6.25 for a spinach pie pastry. At that price it should feed three people, but alas it was about palm size...just big enough to fill me up for the day.
I almost never come here because it's out of my way but occasionally I make the trip.
And it's worth it. The coffee is really good, friendly people and wireless in a nice atmosphere.
The food isn't fantastic and can be pricey. But it's good enough with the good coffee and different funky mugs.
I like Dragonfly, I always go back.
FYI: $5 minimum on credit/debit and they enforce it.
One of the best coffeehouses in Portland. Great coffee, better muffins.
The only disappointment is that the owner has great pieces of art that she's made... and she wouldn't sell any to me! Seriously.. it's got some great stuff in there... the painting of the cherry blossoms.... I know the exact place in my home that I want it.... it screams Springtime in Portland.... anyway.... everyone that I've met there is so friendly. I, too, expected to hear "Smelly Cat" but I think it was a bit too busy. (I go there between accounts.)
"We are family" plays overhead as locals type on their laptops and a group of girls study their biology books. An older pair of girlfriends sip on coffee and soup as they talk with one another.
The Dragonfly is a cozy spot on NW Thurman Street to grab a sandwich and a good cup of French Roast. As the menu says, it's quite possibly the BEST French Roast you'll ever taste. The employees behind the counter may not be drinking much of it however, as they seem low on energy.
The first time I took a bite of the very veggie sandwhich, I was considering becoming a vegetarian. But be warned: I tried to order the sandwich on two separate occassions and both times they told me they didn't have the capabilities to make it that day...so disappointing! It must have something to do with Dave's Good Seed Bread, it just screams healthy, and it's filled with cream cheese, cucumber, red bell peppers, pesto, and a lot of lettuce.
There's something about this place that reminds me of Central Perk on Friends (don't kill me for my 90s reference...I still heart that show)! The decor is so cozy and comfy you want to curl up on one of the couches with a kitty and sip cocoa all day. Erin, the owner, has an impeccable eye for design and has turned this little coffee shop into the neighborhood living room where locals are very loyal and drop by for their daily dose of coffee and the heavenly fresh-baked goods she makes from scratch each morning. If you are in the mood for more than coffee, freshly made soups and sandwiches are available...they even serve ice cream! And when the sun comes out you can snag one of the tables outside to catch some Vitamin D.
Insider secret: If you time your visit right (when business is slow) one of the barista's will pull out her guitar and strum some accoustic tunes...If only I could get her to play "Smelly Cat" I would be in heaven!
This is a cozy and fun looking place on Thurman just off NW 23rd. I frequent the coffee shops in the NW area and I've been to the Dragonfly a few times. If you can get a seat, it is a nice place to relax and enjoy a coffee. I can't say good things about the employees. They always seem disinterested in doing their jobs, and they make no effort to chat with customers.
Pros: free wifi, nice atmosphere, lots of outlets, and close to NW 23rd.
Cons: always too busy to get a table (from 11am-4pm), dull baristas
If you can't get a table at Dragonfly, walk 4 blocks down Thurman to 28th and you'll see the Clearing Cafe. It is one of my favorites and it is never too busy.
One of the most inviting coffee houses in NW. The staff is friendly and so are the patrons. Coffee is served in big funky mugs if you chose to stay and drink your brew there. Which I recommend. And, if you're looking for something to wash down with your cup, the coffee cake is delicious!
Cutesy interior, good selection of food, and GOOD coffee. Another perk--they have actual cups, so if you are staying there, you don't have to kill trees with your coffee. Also, there is an honor-system change jar for do-it-yourself refills! No longer must you fear the judging eyes of the barista as you ask for your 27th refill. Oh no, you can get your own refill! Joy!
The soy mochas are the best in town! Also the delicious gluten free baked goods are amazing!
