One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
There's lots of good food stuff happening in Alameda these days, but Dragon Rouge is my current favorite and has the most buzz. I was previously an aficionado of Pho 84 in Oakland, and I'm still a fan, but Dragon Rouge has taken its place as my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the East Bay. If you like Xyclo, it's really worth trying Dragon Rouge - the style of food is similar at both restaurants, but Dragon Rouge executes everything perfectly, whereas Xyclo can sometimes sacrifice flavor for style.
At lunch, the Vietnamese sandwich with salad combo is delicious - surprisingly, the salad is so good it almost steals the show from the sandwich. The dinner menu is considerably longer and has so many tasty options that it can be difficult to choose. I love the fresh rolls, but it's also very worth trying the Dragon Rouge Potato Roll - they're kind of like what you wish samosas would taste like but rarely do. Order anything from the lemongrass barbecue grill list and you'll be happy. The bouncing beef is super garlic-city but is really addictive, especially with the watercress salad that it sits atop.
Only beer and wine and sake/soju cocktails at the moment, but it looks like they have applied for a full license, so real cocktails could be on the way too. Dragon Rouge is already quite popular and fairly small - as more people find it and Summer rolls around, I bet it'll get hard to grab a table without a wait. The wow-factor that I would have expected at Burma Superstar around the corner has taken a short stroll and now resides at Dragon Rouge.
Still loving Dragon Rouge - I'd say it's the best Vietnamese in Alameda!
I've probably experimented with about half the menu at this point. The scallops, mango steak, and beef carpaccio appetizers are YUM! The pho is equal to Le Cheval and the Bouncing Beef makes my heart skip a beat.
I think i eat here too much now. Just thinking about it makes me hungry... :)

First time visiting here, we loved the soups and Crispy Garlic Chicken appetizer we ordered. Will… Read more »
This place was good, but not enough for me to want to go back. If I was with someone who wanted to go I might go, but I wouldn't on my own free will. The service was very bad. Our waitress barely even made eye contact with us, it was pretty bad. She acted like she hated her job and her life.
The food was pretty good, but pricey. The shrimp was my favorite part, very tasty. I just can't stand bad service, so even if the food was good the service is what is making me not want to go back.
Suggested by my fellow food adventurer (via Wally's wife -- aka: owners of the amazing Wally's in Emeryville! -- check my other yelp review for details!), we decided to give this place a try.
I like this place better than Vanessa's Bistro on Shattuck.
We ordered some of the big hit items as suggested per yelp and needless to say, was not disappointed:
:::FOOD:::
1) Mango Steak Blankets, $9 -- Very tender, juicy pieces of thinly sliced beef wrapped around a julienned stick of mango with hints of lime. They're about the size of a finger (sorry..not really appetizing analogy -- but trust me, quite delicious!) and remind me of a sophisticated asian-twist on pigs in a blanket. 6 pieces that practically melt in your mouth with that pleasantly surprising crunch of the mango. Served with some sort of peppery vinagerette and a sweet chili dipping sauce, and a small grated mango/carrot (?) salad.
2) Lemongrass Chicken Spring Roll, $7 -- Definitely not as packed with the variety of ingredients as an authentic vietnamese spring roll, but taste wise...very refreshing! The grilled chicken was nice and warm and the roll was tightly packet further with vermicilli noodles + some leafy green. There were a total of...12 pieces I think? (Seemed like 3-4 regular size spring rolls cut into pieces).
3) Mango Salad, $9 -- Very very very refreshing! Pairs REALLY well with the above spring rolls and they give you a really good serving! The blend of raw mango slices, bell peppers, cilantro, peanuts, and other things definitely embodies the mild, refreshing, sweet/savory, tangy tastes of Vietnamese food. (Texture wise -- very similar to the Thai papaya salad, "som tam", if you're familiar with that.)
4) Bouncing Beef, $16 -- Imo, the SUPERSTAR of the 4 courses! My goodness...the chunks of meat seriously...SERIOUSLY melt in your mouth. So incredibly soft and seasoned delicately. If you've ever gone to Skates on the Bay and ordered their 3-tier appetizer or their "Teriyaki Tenderloins -- Seared filet mignon chunks" -- this dish surpasses in flavor, tenderness, price, THE WHOLE SHEBANG in every way possible!
But yes..back to the dish: served with a mixture of onions and over a bed of seasoned watercress and a side of that peppery vinaigrette, I would definitely come back just for this...
:::DRINK:::
Mango Saketine, $6 --- Served chilled in a large margarita glass, it certainly is very quenching and does justice to the mango.
:::PRICES:::
2 appetizers + 1 salad + 1 entree + 1 drink + tax/gratuity = $61
A lil pricey, but...worth it for a small splurge on really great flavors. (Portion size was pretty great, too. We completely cleared all of the plates and we're very satiated.)
:::AMBIANCE/LOCATION:::
Really random how it's located kitty corner Alameda High School, but then...it seems like everything is near Park Street anyway, right?
For the price, it would be nice to have a more eye-appealing decor -- ie: a bit more glitz/glam to make the place sparkle. I think the only thing that makes the restaurant "feel" special is the dim lighting.
And now that I think about it...was music even playing in the background? I forget. Oh well. No biggie.
:::SERVICE:::
Attentive, efficient, fast. =)
:::ALL IN ALL:::
This place is definitely Vietnamese-Fusion, so if you're looking for truly authentic pho/other vietnamese foods -- this is not the place to go. However, it's really good for fusion! So, yes, give it a try!
And, imo, best Asian Fusion I've ever had. I shall be back to try those crab cones + more bouncing beef!
This place is for folks who are too timid to eat real Vietnamese food and would rather have it filtered of all tastiness. It wasn't terrible, it was just nowhere near good.
Try Pho 84 or Kevin's Noodle House for well priced, flavorful plates and bowls of Vietnamese food.
A great restaurant with delicious food, it also has a small bar with a 42' plasma HDTV to watch a game and have a beer .
By the way this place was voted "2009 Best of Alameda- Best Asian Food" by Alameda Magazine readers choice.
The owners Brothers Jimmy, Scott and cousin Dan are extra friendly and very accommodating, not to mention the pretty waitresses and their hip chef.
For starters- I usually order the crispy garlic wings ($7) - yummy, or the small dizzy dragon sampler ($11) which consist of a traditional prawn roll, but since I'm allergic to shellfish- I ask them to replace it with the fresh grilled lemongrass chicken roll, the other rolls of the sampler are the phantastic curry -its a pork imperial roll with sliced hard boiled egg inside a fresh roll with lettuce, cilantro, and mint served with peanut sauce, the curry potato- is a crispy roll with curry potato, onions and peas stuffing, served with sweet and sour sauce and the classic imperial rolls which consist of pork and vege's stuffed with lettuce wrap and classic nuoc sauce.
The Bouncing beef ($16) is to die for - it's a cubed filet mignon ( that basically melts in your mouth) that is wok tossed with garlic/onion/lime and vinegar served on some crispy water cress salad.
And if you want your caffeine fix, I highly recommend the Vietnamese coffee ($3.50)
The cook from Wally's cafe in Emeryville recommended this place so I set off to try it. The interior is dimly lit and clean with an HDTV that tracks sports. The people there were very professional and courteous as well.
I had the mango beef brisket which was good but but didn't seem like a good value. It was simply 6 pieces of thinly sliced beef wrapped around mango slices. Delicious, but not a good value at 9 bucks. We then had the lemongrass grilled chicken spring rolls which were absolutely delicous. We then had a mango salad and bouncing beef which were both delicious. The salad was very crunchy and tart while the beef was tender and juicy.
All in all it was good food that woud be enjoyable to anyone - even vietnemese food purists.
I went hoping for more authentic Vietnamese food. I would classify this place more as a fusion place.
The garlic spinach was CRAZY salty.
I had the garlic noodles hoping for the traditional dish. This would have been ok if I had not come with a preconceived craving. It was again a little salty.
I'll definitely go back when I'm craving fusion.
My friends and I discovered this place through http://Restaurant.com where we bought a $25 gift certificate. Even without the gift certificate it's still a reasonable price.
The food is really good if you're into fusion. It's mostly nontraditional Vietnamese food. The garlic noodles is very garlic-y. Very tasty. I get it really spicy because I like spicy but you can also get it without the spiciness. Most people are most familiar with the shrimp spring rolls but they have here a variety of spring roll choices that are all really tasty. I'm not sure how traditional the fillings are but the flavors all work really well together.
Other dishes I've also tried are curry and vermicelli salad. I think the curry is average. It's got a lemongrass kick to it but the vermicelli salad is still only slightly better. I've also had better vermicelli salad. Other items I've tried include the mango salad. I thought it was alright with slightly raw mangoes.
I've not tried their cocktails but they seem like they've got a fairly well stocked bar. They also offer some interesting cocktails that I might try someday.
I'd definitely come back here again because of the variety of choices in a little cozy restaurant. I also love that their menu is interchangeable so you can try the same dish with different ingredients (meats and veggie substitute) so it'll be a while before I could potentially get tired of the menu!
Definitely worth a try if you haven't been already.

Absolutely Wonderful
One of the better Vietnamese (if not only??) restaurants in Alameda. A "sister" restaurant to Le Cheval in Oakland, Dragon Rouge offers tasty Vietnamese food in a warm and inviting space. If your group is larger than six, you may want to try arriving earlier as the tables fill up quickly for dinner. Our favorites include the Vietnamese sandwich (take-out only), vermicelli bowl, shaking beef, classic Pho and traditional Prawn Rolls. Portion sizes are good and they also deliver!
Dragon Rouge is part of a small complex of eateries which include boba, Hawaiian bbq and crepes. There's a small parking lot on the side (often full), but street parking along Encinal is usually adequate.
$25 gift certificates for $15 (restrictions apply) on http://Restaurant.com
Came here during lunch ordering the dragon garlic noodles, garlic fried chicken and vermicelli stir-fry with pork. Dragon garlic noodles a little spicy and dry. Garlic fried chicken was okay but marinated only to the skin. The vermicelli stir-fry with pork was pretty good.
Reminds me of Xyclo near Fenton's in Oakland. Have to admit I like Xyclo better. But then again, this place is a little cheaper.
This is not really authentic Vietnamese food (obvious from the clientele) but the food isn't bad so it doesn't warrant a 2-star rating. Vegetarian appetizer rolls - curry and spring roll - were deliciousssss. Overall the dishes were yummy and flavorful.
Like many mention, this is new style Vietnamese. I don't know if I would call it fusion, because they don't through in any other styles of cuisine, unless you count that it's Americanized. Despite this, the food is truly delicious. I don't need to repeat what everyone else said, it's mostly true. But I did want to note this is a great place for vegetarians.
We stumbled on this place because Planet Crepe was closed but it was a good accidental find.
The restaurant was nicely decorated but it was a little hard to hear your dinning partner. The food took a little long for lunch but well worth the wait. We'll definitely go back there for lunch.
One word YUM-O!!!!!
this place is great! Been here twice and LOVE IT! The grilled mango steak blankets r to freakin' die for. Juicy, tender and the mango gives it a tropical kick to it. If u want something light and healthy definitely definitely try the mango salad. All of the rolls r good too. The fried ones r not too greasy and they cut up the rolls so u can share amongst ur group. sorta tapas style with a vietnamese twist. Meat eaters~gotta try the bouncing beef. Melts in ur your mouth!!!!
Cocktails r tantalizing. I had the lychee champagne sparkler and pomegranate champagne. Very fruity and tastes like a winecooler it tickles you tongue =) nice compliment to the food. The mojito was very refreshing. not too overpowering with the mint or cilantro (wait is cilantro in a mojito..i forget~LOL)
This restaurant is definitely worth going to. But beware parking is a bitch and the restaurant is not very big
My favorite Vietnamese Restaurant. For sure.
Everything they have is done perfect.
They even turned on the Sharks game for me (last season) when I was already finished my meal, but had to wait for my daughter to finish hers.
Mango Salad - my favorite.
Food: Expansive menu with very fresh ingredients and tasteful presentation. Flavorful plates with lots of diversity. Love the Beef Stew and the Shaking Beef.
Drinks: Full bar - great service
Price: Well priced - Not super cheap but definately not expensive.
Comparison: If you like Le Cheval, you will love Dragon Rouge. The food is twice as good.
Highly Recommended

Lunch
Drove all the way from San Francisco because Wendy A and her boyfriend suggested it. I should have known better. A pretentious spot in Alameda county that caters towards the non Asian and white washed Asian Americans.......... in a good way.
Wasabi crab cones.........the cones were a little stale and the crab meat was not as fresh as it should be.
Lettuce with crepe battered catfish was probably their best dish
The fried rice in clay pot was average at best and was a little too oily.
Garlic noodles with chicken was tasty
Pork Chop with 1 egg over rice. I think two eggs and two pork chops would have been better.
So..............this is how a 2nd generation Vietnam es restaurant should be. Play some reggae music, present it on a nice clean plate, charge a little bit more, proportion the food, throw in a couple of salad dishes and you have Dragon Rouge, a restaurant catered towards the next generation of Vietnamese cuisine.
You can probably get the same kind of food in any other Vietnamese restaurant for half the price. However, you will most likely be in a ghetto part of town. You know the saying though............."you get what you pay for".
I'm more of a "hole-in-the-wall" type of gal when it comes to Vietnamese food (where the locals go), but I must admit Dragon Rouge does not disappoint. They do show a classy side of Asian cuisine with authenticity.
I went at lunch mostly to look for pho. I was pleasantly surprised with the wide variety of choices. My BF chose the garlic noodles and I had the beef pho; we also ordered spring rolls. All were excellent with large portions. I'd definitely would like to go back for dinner.
Normally, my family goes to a Vietnamese restaurant on Webster Street, but this time we decided to try something new. On a Friday night, we arrived at Dragon Rouge and ordered the usual pho, claypot fish, spring rolls and curry chicken dish. The service was a little slow, but chalk that up to the high volume of customers.
Spring rolls were good, pho was average, and the curry chicken was bland and without any zip. My wife said her claypot fish was OK. The kids did not complain about their pho. I ate the meat balls and they were pretty good. I'll give it three stars, mostly for effort and not messing up any dish royally.
One of my best friends lives in Alameda, and she introduced me to Dragon Rouge. Since she was familiar with the menu, she did the ordering for our large group. There was so much food!
For starters, we couldn't decide between the spring rolls w/ shrimp or the fried imperial rolls -- both were good but I preferred the imperial rolls. We also had the garlic noodles (delicious), a veggie dish that contained napa cabbage and zucchini amongst other veggies, skewers, and the drunken beef cubes. The beef cubes were hands down my favorite; succulent and tender, they were delicious alone or with the lime pepper sauce that accompanied the dish.
This was a memorable dinner; I am certain that I will be back.
I was surprised this restaurant was not packed on a Friday afternoon. All the kids from the nearby high school were surrounding this restaurant from left to right, but lucky for me these kids were too busy going to Tap Ex, a crepe store, or a small take out japanese restaurant next door.
- Traditional Prawn Roll (Goi Cuon Tom): I'm used to getting shrimp AND pork in my spring rolls, but not here. The rolls consisted of shrimp, lettuce, cilantro, and noodles. Just the plain jane, it was alright at most. I enjoyed the rice paper wrap that they used though, it was not overly chewy or thick, thin and just enough to cover the rolls without bursting. The plate that it came in was more interesting that the taste of the roll itself.
- Vermicelli Noodle Bowl (Bun Dac Biet): I tried a piece of chicken from this dish and it was really good. I did not even have to use the fish sauce, because it was flavored so well.
- Chicken Curry (Cari Ga): This one was okay. Nothing special to note here.
- Dragon Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue): Spicy beef & pork noodle soup served with fresh basil, lime, & cabbage. I love how you can choose how spicy you want this dish on a scale of 1-10? I never had that option that other places and I tend to veer towards the mild side (which is impossible at some places b/c the broth is prepared ahead). I noticed they were missing the traditional banana peel shreds that are provided with the cabbage like at most Vietnamese restaurants. *My Favorite*
- Garlic Noodles with Chicken (I added vegetables to my order): Not too much flavor unless you add the parmesan cheese that is provided on the side. Oily, sweet, and salty spaghetti noodles all mixed into one. It was an interesting mix, but way too much garlic for me to handle. I hate the garlic aftertaste in my mouth, not to mention the occasional burps of garlic afterwards throughout the day too. I felt like I could scare a whole clan of vampires after my lunch, definitely no fear of them after this dish hits my mouth.
Service was a bit slow when we first arrived even though there were only a few tables occupied, but the pace picked up later on. The waitress was super friendly and service was efficient.
P.S. I saw DJ turntables on the side of the bar, so I'm guessing this restaurant converts into some lounge/bar at night? I wonder if it's poppin' even though this place is dead at lunch and hidden inbetween bopper hot spots.
I came here to celebrate the 2nd year anniversary of this establishment being open. My best friend is friends with one of the owners hence the invite.
Unfortunately we didn't get to try any of the food, but I did get my buzz on with 2 mangosaketini's which were strong and fruity, just how I like them! I will have to come back to try the food out too!
What a pleasant yummy place to eat.
The food is simple, authentic, and delicious. The service is friendly and efficent.
My favorites:
Traditional Prawn Roll (wonderful rice paper roll with veggies and prawn served with a nice peanut sauce)
Bouncing Beef (tender fillet Mignon with a nicely seasoned sauce)*****
Lemongrass Curry Stir-Fry ( choice of tofu, chicken, prawn in a spicy lemongrass stir fry) simple but verrrry tasty.
Last but not least, Lemongrass Tofu and Veggies.
Nice rice.
With any spicy dish you can choose the level, but I have never been overwhelmed.
Never had room for deserts. But try the lychee iced tea.
I'd give them five stars but then I could never get a table. Enjoy
I got take out from DR when they first opened and there was a hair in my roll. :(
After avoiding the place for several months I finally went to dine in with my roomie. It was great. Service was really awesome! Saketini's were good but too small. Calamari was good and very large, loved the vietnamese salad. Neither of us cared for the rolls very much - no hair this time! My roomie loved his clay pot. I really enjoyed the experience and am looking forward to trying more of the menu sans hair.
I love this place. I live right down the street so most of the time I stop in and eat there but last night it was getting late so I ordered take out. I usually get their Traditional prawn roll as they are one of my favorite foods but I have also tried the vegetarian shiitake and tofu version and like them as well. I have had their vermicelli bowls quite a few times and ordered the crab once and it was amazing. I was livid when one of my housemates ate my leftovers!! Their saketinis are also great and I hear they're going to have a full liquor license pretty soon. Definitely stop by tues-thurs for half priced wine!
In addition to my love for DR's food, the people who work there have been really awesome to me. They've brought me a beer (for free), asked if I wanted to eat their 'family', end of the shift meal with them, and "mama" has brought me a complimentary order of calamari for no reason. If not the food alone the service will keep me coming back for more! I just wish they were open on Mondays!
I come here for lunch from time to time. I'm a creature of habit so I always order the Pork Vietnamese Sandwich combo with Salad and split an order of prawn rolls with a friend. I haven't left disappointed once.
I don't know why I didn't know about this restaurant before! (I think I say that about a ton of places!)
The restaurant is welcoming and smells delicious when you walk in. So it was difficult to choose dishes, especially when you go with someone just as indecisive as yourself!
The Bouncing Beef, is actually Angus Filet Mignon which is tender, juicy and melts in your mouth plus you get it on a bed of watercress, YUMMMM! Claypots are on my list of things to order...the Catfish Claypot here didn't disappoint, the flavors were rich and tastes oh-so-good over rice!
After those two dishes, I know I will have to come here to try some more! Now to get someone to take me....rather go with me.
Went here on a friends suggestions coincidentally on the evening of their 2 year celebration.
The food was good. Had the salmon and the jumping beef.
We left right after they started the fireworks as I was looking for a quieter locale to dine in.
I'm definitely going back to try the crab though.
It was pretty good. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the waitress was exceptional (much better than Pappo where we tried to start the evening and were treated rudely). The food was well flavored. I really liked the dragon noodles (not bland like some have said) and my wife enjoyed her noodles (a little less flavor than mine which was good for her.)
The price was a little steep and I wished they had a good vegetarian Pho. I am going to try to recreate the dragon noodles in my kitchen as I think I can do a good impression in 10 minutes for $1.
Still I will go back here. This was better than any of the Thai in Town and I don't do Chinese.
I love Dragon Rouge! The drinks are great! The food is great. Service is wonderful. I love the ambiance of the place and I love the art they have up on their walls.
I love this restaurant!
Went here on a Tuesday night for dinner and loved it. We ordered way too much food but it was all worth it. Garlic battered scallops as our appetizer and a bottle of fuji apple flavored sake to sip on (tastes exactly like Fuji apples!...only 8% alcohol tho)
Ordered the Bouncin Beef, Garlic Noodles, and this other curry stir-fry dish (forgot the name). It was all DEEEELicious, but I do have to say that the Bouncing Beef was the best.
This place would get 5 stars if our first waitress wasn't so cold and un-friendly and if they had a better view.It was nice to have a window seat and all but I kinda didnt want to look outside at the run-down businesses across the way and cars going back and forth.
I ordered the lychee ice tea again. Go figure. I guess I should have read my review of this place before going...
Anyways... Still a cute place. Food was really good. Service was fine.
Here's what we had this time around:
We shared the fried calamari (pretty good. Like how it comes with 2 different sauces (tartar sauce thingie and a vinegar/peppery thingie); potato egg rolls (I thought were yummy but I'm thinkin' that Baby Foodrat didn't think so); and watercress salad with beef (delicious!). S and I got the garlic noodles with chicken (tasted fine and garlicky - probably won't order it again); C got the vermicelli stir fried noodles with tons of goodies (she enjoyed, but I noticed that she did not take come the leftovers); and S2 got the mango salad ("where's the mango?" she asked later).
I look forward to going back. I didn't notice that they also serve clay pot. I'll order that next time.

I love this place! I love that they deliver! It's great to be able to have something other than pizza or chinese food delivered to your door!
Eating there is fun too. Everyone is always so nice!
Try the crepes, the Vietnamese sandwiches, the aloe shots, the iced coffee, their coconut rice, everything is so good!!!
I came here for a friend's bday last night and was surprised at how small the restaurant was inside. Service was great but the food was only okay. Extra stars for the yummy garlic noodles but less stars for the lack of flavor in the beef carpaccio. The typical vietnamese dishes (such as the banh xeo, beef carpaccio, spring rolls) lacked authentic flavor, which I should have expected since this is a Vietnamese "bistro." The menu is catered towards an American audience - those of you looking for more authentic vietnamese food will be much more satisfied at Binh Minh in Oakland. I would definitely come back for the garlic noodles but will look else where when I am craving Vietnamese.
Ordered Vietnamese food from here for dinner at work instead of the usual Le Cheval. Quite a dissapointment to be honest. It is just as pricey, and half as good. The beef was decent, and the spring rolls seemed fresh, but it lacked the taste bud enlightener. Not bad, but nothing great either. Cannot comment on the location or service or decor since we got delivery.
I think this place is great! My favorites are the chicken skewers and thai iced tea. I've also had their beef blankets and the sweet and sour soup ( I had shrimp). The beef blankets were yummie with mango and a good dipping sauce, I didn't really care for the soup... the shrimp was perfect but the overall soup was just OK, I wouldn't order it again.
I've eaten in once and ordered out once, both times I had good service and good food.
It was a pleasure to finally visit Dragon Rouge after months of admiring their menu. I didn't realize it was the little eatery next door to the bubble drink place my coworkers tend to frequent. Anyhoo. . .
Though there's nothing special about the ambiance, there's definitely a good feeling you get upon entering. Between the aroma of what is obviously great food cooking and the smiles on peoples faces throughout the establishment, you know you're in for a treat.
I had the vermicelli salad and my friend (who prefers I don't refer to as my "companion") had the Lemongrass Beef Rice Plate and we shared the veggie spring rolls. We were both very pleased with our dishes and look forward to returning soon.
Service was quaint, the place was clean and the presentation of the dishes was definitely delightful. Looking forward to many more visits!
One word: yummy!
Ok - a few more: Have been here a lot since they opened, and the staff is always very prompt and friendly. My daughter loves the veggie curry, last time we had that and the tofu & veggie clay pot - both were great! (though I should have realized it didn't come with rice when the guy on the phone offered it to me, silly me!)
It's great to have some really decent dining options in Alameda now!
