Neighborhood: Inner SunsetDr. Kurtbay is very professional and genial. He happily discusses and explains your medical conditions and questions. His staff are very helpful, too. They go the extra mile in helping you work the wack-ass insurance system to your best advantage.
Sure, you can find the frames they stock for significantly cheaper elsewhere, but you are paying for the personal service and the location. That's worth it in my book.
Also, saying Yunus Kurtbay is fun and sounds slightly like code for something naughty.

Dr. Kurtbay is fantastic. He was very knowledgable and discusses all of your concerns. His staff is great but I'm dropping them a star only because after I said I wanted my new lens using my old frames they still wanted to show me all these frames that I didn't want. Nothing big but it was kinda awkward. Love the Dr thought and the place seems quiet so it was no issue getting an appt on short notice

I lived in the Inner Sunset for about 7 years, but it wasn't until 2 months before I moved to Alamo Square that I finally switched to Dr. Kurtbay's practice.
I needed an eye doctor that accepted Saturday appointments, and Dr. Kurtbay fit.
I was also pleased with the fact that on the many occasions that I had to visit the office (all on Saturdays), I always manage to see Dr. Kurtbay himself, or another optometrist who might be fresh from UCSF. At Hyperoptics, it was always an Optometrist's Technician who saw me on Saturdays.
The staff are puppy-friendly, and themselves have photos of their doggies plastered to the wall.
Slight gripes - though always friendly and pleasant, the staff takes a gander at my generous VSP vision policy through my employer, and always try to upsell me to the most expensive frames and lenses, saying "Oh, your policy's so good, you've got a lot covered... etc. etc. etc." I don't necessarily want brand new $600 frames every year and let them know so.

Quirky guy who walks in and walks out--no goodbyes and no hellos. Not to be taking as being rude, it's just his style. I was impressed by the selection of Hawaiian style Island reggae and felt like grabbing a cup o' joe down the street and hanging out in one of the optometrist chairs.Nevertheless, Dr. Kurtbay is great! Conveniently located on 9th & Irving--not only are they open on Saturday but they're easily accessible off the N Judah line. Dr. Kurtbay gets really into the science of the eye and informs you like no other--I ended up getting a retinal exam ($33) which quelled my emotions of my retina detaching (my left eye has been hurting because i haven't updated my prescription in about 8 years). All is good in the 'hood with Dr. Kurtbay. One of their reps was very observant about the style of frames I wanted and always had an answer for everything. I left there with a peace of mind that I'm not going blind and that I'll be getting a new pair of specs in a few days.

I had Lasik 10 years ago and my vision is now waning. So I haven't even seen an eye doctor in that long. But Dr. Kurtbay is pleasant and knowledgeable and quick. I would say his prices are higher than those that I researched BUT A Site For Sore Eyes was getting not so nice reviews and I just don't know if I want to trust a chain for my eyes. I went to the best surgeon and I'm not going to have qualms about spending $40 more for a good exam.

I love Dr. Kurtbay. He is informative, helpful, pleasant and doesn't rush you through like cattle. I've seen many eye doctors in my life and he's my favorite.

Dr. Kurtbay was super nice and answered all my questions clearly and patiently. The staff is really awesome and the guy who helped me spent a lot of time picking out the best glasses for my price range and style.
They take VSP and were really on top of what my coverage is, but in the end the prices were still sort of high...

Dr. Kurtbay is a great doctor - friendly and professional. The thing that I like the most about him is that he is really into what he does - he is always very glad to explain or even teach you about any test that he is running, or any condition that you may have.
I love Dr Kurtbay! Unlike most places I've been where some technician does most of the exam, Dr Kurtbay does the whole thing. He's very professional and has all the up to date equipment. His staff is great and helped me pick awesome frames I never would have picked up myself. I ordered my contacts from him as well since he agreed to price match 1-800-contacts my usual online source. Another bonus - right next to Starbucks!

I've been going to Dr. Kurtbay since early '02 and have been satisfied with his staff and service. My only complaint is that despite the fact that my insurance covers exams, he requires that I get my eyes checked with his super duper handy dandy ACME plus eye examining machine, which my insurance doesn't cover. It's basically a gizmo that examines your eyes using recent high-tech advances and it spits out digital views of the internal eye structure. Look, my only eye problem is that I can't see that well and that's why I go to an optometrist. I don't think that I need to drop an additional 90 bucks on top of an insuranced-covered appointment to get my eyes examined by this thing.

I've been very pleased with Dr. Kurtbay. Don't let the pig latin name fool you; he's a professional through and through. The selection is excellent, and they're a big help with the VSP insurance. This is my third optometry clinic in SF, and my last -- I can't imagine going elsewhere. Parking, naturally, is tough around 9th & Irving, but if you've got the access you can't beat these guys.

I don't know how I even started going to Kurtbay -- i have neither lived in the area nor worked in the area, but it's been maybe 6 or 7 or 8 years and I have always been satisfied with their timeliness and friendly assistance. I routinely purchase my contacts and get my annual eye exams done here -- a reliable and helpful optometry practice. Easy access by N line (stops right in front) and parking isn't too difficult during normal busn hours.

Agree with all posts.
Dr. Kurtbays place covers it all, including cool sunglasses like Muai Jims, Lasik and regular checkups. A few of the staff are UCSF chicks, so they're pretty knowledgeable. This is on 9th and Irving, so lots to eat after your done.

Kurtbay hooks a brotha from another motha up. Although I'm not related to him, and although I'm not a "brotha", he still did indeed bring out the bad ass skills(as if optomitrists have "mad" skillzz) in order to help me out.
I walked in, 1 week till departure with a need for funky cool, yet durable glasses. His super friendly staff was more than helpful and keenly guided me towards frames I really liked.
Highly recommended, his strong accent and even stronger knowledge of optometry will be sure to leave you squinting for months. Albeit because your smilng so wide....

When Superman needs glasses he gets them here. Dr. Kurtbay has a great selection of glasses. From modern to classic, you'll find something that will suit you. They are a little pricey, but every prescription I've had filled here has been perfect. Good thing they take VSP.

I have only been to Dr. Kurtbay once, a month ago, but it was a very good experience. It was easy to get a convenient appointment, and when I arrived, I was taken into an exam room right away. Dr. Kurtbay explained things as we went along, which I appreciated. Also, he has a new machine there that allows him to take photos of the eyes and check for melanoma and other problems without having to dillate the eyes. It costs an additional $30, which isn't covered by insurance, but it was well-worth it, because I didn't have to worry about how I was going to drive home after my visit! And he showed me the pictures, which was really interesting! I didn't wind up getting my frames there, because they didn't have many red frames (what I was looking for!), but overall they had a pretty decent selection. I felt it was a good experience, so I made an appointment for my husband to get his eyes checked there, too. He had a similar experience. The nicest touch? Dr. Kurtbay's office sends you a thank you note for having chosen to visit his office. If you live in the Inner Sunset or nearby, I would definitely recommend Dr. Kurtbay.

I started going to Dr. Kurtbay when I worked in the neighborhood. Now that I work on the other side of the city, I still return to the Sunset for my eye appointments as I find Dr. Kurtbay to be thorough and efficient. Staff is friendly, and they have a good selection of glasses.

Sounds like there's great things to say about Dr. Kurtbay, but if you go see him, I don't recommend seeing Dr. Zhang.
While professionally I felt she did a good job, she was curt and unfriendly. It was a busy day for them (Saturday), but I was a new patient and new to the area, hoping to find a friendly doctor I could trust. I was disappointed in her service.
