Categories: Optometrists, Eyewear & Opticians [Edit]
Neighborhood: MissionI held off on writing a review until I made a few visits. I can now say with confidence that the Yelpers are right, Dr. Stamper is a GREAT optometrist! On my first visit, I picked out some kickass frames by some crazy japanese manufacturer that I've never heard of. The women were very helpful with picking out frames that looked good on me AND they talked me into paying much more than I planned on. Great sales job, ladies! I recently had another great experience where I had to return for a contact lens fitting. I was hoping to get an earlier appointment but they were booked. The women told me they accept walk-ins so I arrived first thing in the morning and they were able to accommodate me immediately. Couldn't ask for anything more! Oh yeah, Dr. Bruce Stamper is super nice! Oh double yeah, if you have to wait for your eyes to dialate, you can go across to Cafe La Taza for coffee!
This place was great! My daughter who is an uncooperative 5 year old loved her doctor and didn't complain at all about having her eyes dialated. All the people were great and they have cute little toys for the kids to take home. I hate that I paid so much for glasses but that is what I get for having no eye coverage.
Stamper was a really cool guy. He knew Dr. Faktorovich and her reputation as an amazing Lasik surgeon. She rejected me from Lasik and Stamper helped confirm that she had most likely made the right decision. I'll probably get another opinion in the future but Stamper's thoughts on the matter were a good addition to what I'll be mulling over. As far as the exam goes he was very professional and had some insight on some issues I've had with contacts and allergies. Good advice. Good exam. Good location for me. I'll be going back.
If I could give this practice more than five stars, I would. Not only are Dr. David and Dr. Bruce very personable, knowledgeable, etc., but the front office staff and lab techs are the best!
For example:
I had them send some sunglasses to my insurance's lab to have Rx lenses put in. Even though they rushed the order, the lab messed something up and they weren't ready in time for my vacation. Instead of giving me the bad news and leaving it at that, Dr. Stamper's office called my insurance lab for me. They got them to send out a loaner pair of lenses, and Dr. Stamper's lab put them into another pair of sunglasses for me. Gratis. Yay. And they were all so nice about it.
Don't trust your eyes with any other doctor. Dr. David Stamper is the Contact King! I already had LASIK eye surgery and was one of those hard to fit cases on the wrong side of the bell curve, but Dr. Stamper took his time and prescribed me disposable contacts that have me seeing better than I ever have in my life. If you want an optometrist who will do whatever it takes to give you your best possible vision, RUN to Dr. Stamper's office - and tell him Wendell sent ya.
And, for the (straight) guys you'll want perfect eyesight 'cause some of the ladies who work there are smoking!
After going there for my Silhouettes (with the highest grade anti-glare and transitions lenses) I have to say the service is pretty quick and efficient to what they do. I like their friendly staff and their service is quite something. I highly recommend this place to anyone who has a need for corrective lenses, sun glasses or anything of the like.
First let me say there are sooo many eye offices on mission street, How could i choose, so i went with the one with the most reviews. I call the office to see if they carried a specific model of frame that i was looking for. The girl on the phone told me she would look in the office and if not she could order them. She was very helpful even though i was not a patient of theirs. When i went to the office the girls were nice and helpful. I know i didn't have any experience with the doctors but it was a good experience at the office.
Love my new Silhouettes. Delivered on time as promised, and all staff I dealt with were loveliness personified.
Dilated eyes for a few hours was a little trippy----it was like being on acid without the fun, gooey feeling inside, and without the uncontrollable two-hour giggles. The little head-gripping shades they gave me helped cut the glare.
Thanks Dr. S.!

as grow older my eyesight has certainly begun deteriorating.
Now at the ripe old age of 21 I was certain it was time for a stronger glasses perscription due to the fact that... quite frankly I can't see.
Anyways, I had a really cute lady doctor whose name escapes me at the moment. But she was nice and kept saying "my friend" at the end of everything she asked me to do or when giving me encouragement. "Close your left eye my friend" "Great job, my friend! Youre doing so well!"
I left with a bigger ego at how good I was for following these directions, regardless of the fact that I was still blind.
Then it was time for frames!
I was feeling overwhelmed by the massive frame selection they had. Fortunatley they basically assigned a sales woman to help me select the perfect pair. She pegged me the second she saw me, showing me the really really cute line of Betsey Johnson glasses. After trying them all on I confessed that, as much as I liked them, I really couldn't spend that much money on my glasses. She was really nice and I ended up getting a really cute pair of red Cynthia Rowley glasses for a totally affordable price.
Great experience! The only test is to see how long it takes me to get the glasses! I needed them a week ago, but I'll be happy if I get them in the next few days, as it has been about a week already.
Totally reccomend them!
I found Dr. Stamper from fellow Yelpers - thanks everyone! The office is not one I ever would have entered without reading the Yelp reviews. Even though I live in the Mission & I'm very comfortable here I try to stay off Mission Street itself; there are a few too many drug deals & robberies happening at all hours of the day. But don't let the surrounding ambience deter you - the offices are very comfortable & nice & the staff is professional, knowledgeable and very hard-working. The ambience is also refreshing, there's a nice diverse range of people in both the staff and customers. I was there after failing to get a usable pair of glasses from Through the Hayes, who made numerous errors (which I won't detail here). I ended up with a $650 pair that I could not wear (the prescription made me horribly nauseous).
So I arrived at Dr. Stamper's office feeling very traumatized and mistrustful of optometrists in general. But he handled it with aplomb. He was sympathetic to my tale of woe without passing judgment on the other doctor and worked with me to get the prescription I needed. He also educated me about which frames would give me the best result which greatly helped the selection process. After only a week I got a call that my new glasses were ready. And they are wonderful! I can finally see (halleluiah) and the glasses do not make me nauseous (triple halleluiah). I was able to wear them out the door and I haven't taken them off since. The selection of frames was also wonderful, I was quite surprised (and I get constant complements on the ones I picked). So kudus to Dr. Stamper and the Yelpers who shared their experiences.
I would give them 3.5 stars if I could. COME ON YELP, GIVE US THE HALF STAR!
Anyway, I have dry eye problems that makes it hard for me to many things, such as driving, going to the mall, etc. I went to Dr. Stamper particularly for this (I saw the younger Dr. Stamper). He basically ignored the reason I came to visit, so 0 stars there.
But they get 3 stars because Dr. Stamper is an EXPERT at contact lenses and he got me some new technology gas perms (and most optometrists aren't even very good at fitting gas perms to begin with) that I can actually wear once in a while. The service was also good, and they have a great selection of frames.
So what did we learn here?
If you have dry eyes, this place is going to ignore that problem
But, if you want contacts, or are a hard to fit contact lens wearer, this is the place to go.
Really patient, friendly staff and good prices. I shopped around the other opticians on Mission, of which there are many, but was drawn back to Dr. Stamper's by the interesting selection of frames and super helpful service. They had no problems filling a prescription from Kaiser optometry. My new glasses work great. I can read (and Yelp!) so much better now.
I was very pleased with the service I received today at Stamper Family Optometry. Everyone I encountered in the office was very personable. I saw Dr.Tran for my eye exam and she did an excellent job of answering my questions and explaining everything to me. The ladies who helped me with searching for frames were very helpful. I opted not to make a purchase when I was in there, and felt no pressure to do so.
I went here after reading all the great Yelp reviews but unfortunately, I had a bad experience. The actual eye exam was great. I saw Dr. Tran and I really liked her- that's why 2 stars instead of none. The part that left me upset was that when it came time to go over my benefits they were incorrect, meaning, they were pulling up someone else's benefits. I told them they were wrong, asked them to check again, pointing out that I am covered through my husband and do not have my own benefits. They "checked" again and told me that I was wrong, that I was showing up as having my own coverage. Of course, I called VSP and found out that they did see me under someone else's benefits. They only bothered to look me up under my first initial and last name. There are many other ways to look up someone's insurance benefits, including a social security number, birthdate, and full name- none of which they did. To me this is an unforgivable mistake and I'm pretty forgiving. Sorry, Stampers but me and my family won't be returning.
I've returned to update this review. Within a day or so of posting it, I was contacted by a member of the Stamper family. She went to great lengths to rectify the situation and she told me they are doing a huge training to make sure this type of situation won't come up again. I'm still undecided as to whether I'll return, but her efforts definitely help.
I've been a patient since 1987 and currently seeing the David of the Stampers. Bless those girls who run the front, because I think they do a LOT; they have a lot of patience with the difficult and the whiners, and still make the effort to smile and provide excellent customer service. Plus, the place is often busy. They are truly angels. The Doc is thorough and informative. They were very patient with my squeamish transition to contact lenses. They are also very patient about my inability to sit still for that nasty eye test that shoots a puff of air in your eye. I have to take it 2x, maybe 3x, and they don't give me a hard time about it.

A satisfactory experience, and as pleasant a trip to the eye doctor's as can be expected. Everyone was clearly very experienced and comfortable doing their job, and the wait was minimal. Dr. Stamper (the younger) is very charismatic and friendly. The selection of eyeglasses is pretty good, too. I didn't experience anything particularly stupendous about the office, and the neighborhood is a bit sketch, but it is an altogether suitable place to go if you need to have your eyes poked at.
The prices on frames are not competitive. Frames that were $250 at Dr Stamper's were $180 online. Buy your frames on the web, then bring them in to the office to have the lenses put in and fitted to your face.

Are the rest of these real reviews? I am sitting here, half-blind, trying to reconcile a 5-star average with the experience I just had.
First - insurance - I know this is a pain in the ass, so I called them in advance of my appointment to find out what they needed to know about my insurance. Very little, it seemed. But when I got there, a statement of benefits and certification that they were in-network wasn't enough - they actually needed to phone my insurance. But it was Saturday and so no one was answering the phone at my insurance company. But the staff weren't up front with me about what I needed to know, so they wasted half an hour of my time pretending that we were going to get somewhere with my insurance. Clearly, they should have phoned my insurance in advance - they are the ones with 100 years experience, and they are the ones who should know what to do to make my appointment run smoothly.
So while we were pissing around with the insurance, I dropped way down in the appointment list and didn't get seen until after all the people who had appointments half an hour after me.
And then...They dilated my pupils. I have to admit - I'm pretty much an optometrist rookie. I didn't need glasses until I was 18, and I've only been for an eye exam three or four times. No one has ever dilated my eyes before - not even the optometrist I saw the last time I went to Stamper Optometry. So that wasted another half hour of my life, plus gave me four hours (that have yet to end) of blurred vision.
So I asked the optometrist what I could do in the future to not have my eyes dilated. And he says "didn't they tell you about the alternative exam when you got here?" yes, they gave me some laminated sheet of paper with a photo of a gross eyeball on it. "well," he says "they should have told you that if you have that exam, then you don't need your eyes dilated." Well, they didn't. He did apologize for the gross miscommunication, but as someone who calls himself "Doctor", he can't leave responsibility for defining treatment options to the staff working at the front desk. Even if you don't think that's bad form, there are liability issues here.
So there you have it: a visit to Stamper Optometry ruined my day. If you decide to go here, stay on your toes and ask questions about absolutely everything...

I got new glasses from these guys a few weeks ago. The service is great! Everyone who works here is very friendly and professional. They hang out with you as you're trying on your glasses and give their opinion on what looks best. My new frames are an excellent fit, and the price was good for what I got. I didn't get an exam, so I can't speak to the dilation issue others have raised.
I have been a satisfied customer since moving to San Francisco in 2004. I've gotten frames and contact lenses from them. I see David Stamper; David is courteous, professional, and always explains what is going on and what your options are. Visits are always a smooth experience. Highly recommended.

Great family of Eye Docs. I've always been happy with the high degree of knowledge, care and service that has been provided. Everyone is friendly, helpful and skilled. They've got a great selection of frames, too. Last time I was there I left with 3 different styles and they all fit my personality. I sat on 1 pair and bent the frame, took them into the office and they fixed them right on the spot!

2.5 stars, rounding up to 3.
I came here having high hopes with all these glowing reviews. I've been to many a optometrists in my day because I've been wearing corrective lenses forever, and this places leaves much to be desired.
The frames I bought here were horribly marked up as someone else also commented. It look longer than projected to have my glasses made, and when I asked the office to send me my prescription for contacts, they send me the one for my glasses.
It also took three adjustments on my frames to fit well. So, why does this place have 2.5 stars? Because the staff is helpful and friendly, and I don't think Dr. Stamper is a bad doctor.
Dr. Bruce is the best. Not only did he recently treat me with out an appointment (i had never been b4)for a somewhat emergency he did so with such compassion. In a perfect world all doctors would be like him. Highly recommended for all you eye needs.

My uncles shop, great styles to choose from, some are pricey if your looking for the best/newest styles, all top shelf frames. My cousin Stacey is on maternity leave now, but when she's back I'll let you all know, so she can help you pick out those rockin shades!

Interesting selection of glasses for any budget. I came in because i lost my contact lenses, one on the plane, the other down the drain. Dr. Stamper was sympathetic when he found out the legs on my back-up glasses where also missing in action. He calmly told me that once i picked out the frames he could order a rush job free of charge, so i could have them that very day (mind you it was already 4 pm by then). It took me forever to choose the glasses, but in the end i picked two pairs, one by dolce and gabana which i always get compliments on, the other a more colorful orange and black prada number. Guess there are happy endings for clumsy girls like me. thank you Dr. Stamper :)

The only place to go!
The largest, best selection of frames ( and I mean huge- no measly 900 frames- we are talking 4 or 5 thousand to choose from) budget to all of the top designers. All of the exclusive products without the hi-end sales attitude. Prada, Lafont, Gucci, Prodesign, Kata, Coach, Silhouette, Chanel, Oliver Peoples, Paul Smith and loads more. The doctors are personable and experts in fitting contact lens.
The staff is well trained and extremely helpful.

To make a quick point, every positvie remark below I found to be true. Thank you to everyone who recommended this office and thank you to the Stampers who lived up to those recommendations.
I see Dr. Stamper the younger. Although parking is a bit of a hassle, (yeah, I know, it's the Mission!) service is great once you're inside. It's actually refreshing to have a family oriented atmosphere..takes me back to those days when I used to get a lollipop for visitng the opthamologist..
All the girls are great about helping you pick out new stylish frames to fit your face/lifestyle/mood/whatever. I got a yellow/black pair from Prodesign from Denmark. Apparently, the Danes are the fashion forward eyewear designers of Europe. Who knew? I wish my vision insurance would let me buy multiple frames- I could definitely see picking out a few to reflect my ever changing mood....

11 great reviews and 1 negative review; who do you believe?
All patients want and deserve great care from friendly, knowledgeable Doctors and staff.
If a patient complains, we thouroughly investigate the issue, resolve the problem and train staff so that the problem will not happen again.
While we strongly disagree with Gabriel D.'s version of what occured and his review, we are sorry that we did not meet his expectations.

I once made a mistake... and went somewhere else. It will NEVER happen again. This place is the best. I just went back last week for my yearly exam and they proved themselves once again.
It seems that my school district (I am a teacher) decided to change my insurance again. The staff at Dr.Stamper's made the necessary phone calls to determine the details and got my coverage when I had been unable to do so! To be honest I thought that I did not have eye coverage anymore- They could have just blown me off and taken my money, but no they went the extra mile to track down the insurance benefits.
I decided to do the Optomap after the ladies at the front desk explained that I would not have to be dilated if I did. My Grandma has had cataracts so I know that I have to keep up on the health of my eyes- but who likes to be dilated? Not me!- Loved the Optomap- I highly recommend it.
Dr.Stamper is the only optometrist that I will trust with my vision. He gives me the time and attention that I deserve- He is also a really nice person and always explains what he is doing throughout my exam and gives me all of my options when it comes to my contacts.
The staff was extremely helpful when choosing glasses. Deciding on the right frame is very important- I am over looking like a sexy librarian-
The staff was patient and honest when asisting me. They have the best selection of frames of anywhere that I have ever been. How do people decide when a place only has a few hundred to try on? I like to "see" all of my options.
I am not easy to please, but they have done just that! They put up with me- which says a lot.

Both doctors are excellent! The service provided by the staff is very good. The selection of frames is better than other places I have been. Overall, this is a great family office with nice people and I highly recommend coming to Dr. Stamper Family Optometry for all of your optometry needs.

I have been going to Dr.Stamper for over 35 years! Not only do they have a fabulous selection of frames- (I go crazy!) but Dr. Bruce has diagnosed, treated and solved all of my problems. I have had a detacted retina- very scary- and if he had not diagnosed it as early as he had, I might have lost vision in that eye! I have had lasik eye surgery done twice and now can see perfectly- for the first time in my life! It also helps that Dr.Bruce always listens to me rant about my personal life- he really cares!
