12 reviews for Dr Mike & Son
Albert does fantastic work, and for $18 it's a steal. They have other services (hot towel, shave, etc) but I've never used those. A great halfway point between a barber shop and a salon. The only place I get my hair cut.
Go. Now.
B is for Butcher ... which even then is a slur on the lost art of butchery.
I trusted all of you below telling me how wonderful it would be if I tried somewhere new. Alas, I walked out with a requested flat-top that resembled a Manhattan skyline once the gel washed out.
I really am getting angry at incompetent barbers. Sorry Moudi but it was a serious bad haircut. Never again.
I've been getting my haircut at Dr. Mike's since 2005 when I started law school in the neighborhood.
It is, by far, THE BEST, no-frills barber shop I've been to in NYC.
Dr. Mike and his son Albert are amazing, and they provide an incredibly high level of service (it's obvious how much pride they take in it after you are there and look at the decor). After your cut, they will shave your sideburns and back of your neck with warm shaving cream and a straight razor. Then they will use a nice warm towel to clean you up and press on your face, leaving you feeling refreshed. I can honestly say that NO BARBER in NYC has ever paid as much attention to detail to my cut than Albert. I never leave his chair with a hair out of place.
The other guys, like Moody and Arthur, are cheaper ($15 instead of $18) but they are very capable.
The only other place I have yet to try is Neighborhood Barber in E. Village, but so far Dr. Mike's in unbeatable. The staff is also very friendly. Definitely call ahead.
Didn't like the cut and got the feeling that the guy didn't know what he was doing. At one point I thought the barber in the next chair wanted to say something to my guy but with held comment.
I've been going to Dr. Mike for years, since his days at Astor Place and hands down say that there is no other barber in NYC whom I trust to give me a PPC...for those of you out there not familiar with Dr. Mike's notorious barber shop lingo, a PPC is a Perfect Professional Cut...he knows what looks good, keeps it simple and throws in kitschy one liners and nice extras like the hot towel at the end of the cut...note, however, that Dr. Mike has his fair share of regular customers so good luck getting an appointment without calling ahead of time.
The only other guy I trust in the shop is his son Albert who knows his way around a set of clippers like a gardener does well trimmed shrubbery. Albert's also extremely friendly and makes you feel at home...be leery, however of the other butchers, oops, did I say butchers, I guess I meant barbers.
I've been coming here monthly since October '07 and get a great-looking cut each time. I also rarely have to wait as I am always a walk-in (though the shop does take appointments).
Moudi (prounounced MOO-dy) is my regular barber and is a very nice guy. He and other stylists offer the option of having your neck shaved with a straight razor or the electric. And he and the other stylists offer customers hot towels after their haircuts, which feels great in addition to picking up the loose hair generated by the haircut.
For fifteen bucks, you can hardly do better.
I do think it's a bit tacky that the cashier NEVER gives me five singles in return for my $20 bill, thus ensuring that I will give the $5 bill as a tip. But $15 is cheap enough that I don't mind the $5 tip, and I do think Moudi's cuts are worth it.
Hands down the best cut you can get in the city. Not to mention the warm, friendly, fun experience while you're there...from when you step through the door until you pay the (inexpensive) bill they make you feel like family. I've been going to Albert for years and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Good, clean, and inexpensive neighborhood barbershop.
Arthur is now my regular barber (not as regular as he should be -- I should go every 4 weeks, but it's usually more like 7/8 before I make it back). A wizard with the scissors and straight razor, and generally a charming Uzbek guy. Phone ahead for an appointment, and they'll be waiting to welcome you when you arrive. The best $15 I've ever spent.

Made my first visit to Dr Mike's last week, and wasn't disappointed. A good, clean cut from "Albert"… Read more »
Why, oh why, did I not know about this guy my whole life? It would have changed everything!
He is the best barber that I ever had in my life. Hands down.
Dr Mike, recommended to me by DJ Alex Creed, is the self-proclaimed, "Doctor of Hairology"... and who can argue?
Formerly an Astor Hair barber, he went off on his own with his son, Albert, to open up this shop in the Financial District.
Guys | He makes my receding hairline look like a quality 'do! It is due to this that I recommend never going to him, so that I can stay above the pack!
Plus, why should I ruin my own secret and increase my wait times?! Oh, wait. To hook you people up! It's what I do, fockers!
The best haircut experience ever. Hands down. Cheap, knowledgeable, funny, nice, and talented.
And remember: Don't ever go back to Russia...
You arent just getting a fantastic hair cut but you are also walking into a comfortable family establishment. I used to the live in the area but recently moved -- that said it is still worth the trouble of getting to this place. Although I use only one of the barbers (Albert -- he is the "son") I would have no problem going with any of the other barbers.
The best barber. Someone recommended Dr. Mike to me when I started working in NY back in 2000, I've never found a better barber. He had a chair at the Astor Place barber shop when I went to him, I've not been to his new shop, hope to do that next time I go to NY.
