Now this is what ice cream is suppose to taste like!!
The first time I had Dr. Bob's Ice Cream I was completely hooked. I went with vanilla because if you can't even get the basic ice cream flavor right, you have no right making ice cream. The vanilla was... mind blowing. I've never had ice cream where the flavor just erupts in your mouth...every taste bud was singing!! I knew how insanely fattening this ice cream was but I couldn't resist. I've introduced Dr. Bob to a few friends and although at first they were like "oh, it's good, but it's just ice cream" but when we go out and see Dr. Bob on the menu, they feel the need to order it... now that's not just good ice cream... that's GREAT ice cream!!!
There's a few other places to get Dr.Bob's Ice Cream... for pre-packed there's Gelson's & How's but I prefer it fresh. I've been to this Upland location, the ice cream I got was a bit soft.... My favorite place to get Dr Bob's is at the LA County Fair. The portions are HUGE, 1 waffle cone is more than enough for 2... and they tend to have more of their new creative flavors there, like grapenut!
For the chocolate lovers, Dr Bob's chocolate ice cream is insanely chocolately... talk about death by chocolate... image death by chocolate ice cream!!! -

**Please note, this location has moved down the street, less than a block away, and now operates under the name of "Pop's", which features Dr. Bob's Ice Cream. Here is the link:

Now here is the rest of my original review:
If you are a true ice cream fanatic, then you need to try this place!! If you are one of those people who only like their ice cream doctored up with all of those fancy extras like cookies, M&M's, etc., then don't bother and keep on walking. This ice cream has won awards at the L.A. County Fair, been written up in the Los Angeles Times and has been featured on the Food Network, so there isn't really a lot more my amateur words can offer. They use on the highest quality ingredients and you can definitely taste the difference. I've never had a flavor I didn't like, but my favorite is Strawberry, Sour Cream and Brown Sugar. I know it sounds strange, but it's fantastic.
They are closed Sundays and Mondays, so be sure to stock up for the week!
***This Just In*** Dr. Bob's is now called "Pop's", which features Dr. Bob's Ice Cream. Pop's carries a full menu of food items, such as ribs, potatoes, sandwiches, etc., none of which I have tried. Also, as of the 1st of October 2006, they will be closing this location and moving across the street to the D'Uplanders' current location. They will be keeping the name D' Uplanders, but will have a section in the back of the restaurant for Pop's. -

Yet another reason to leave LA.
Whether the nominative "Dr. Bob's" or "Pop's" is used, this is the best ice cream available in Southern California--approaching the greatness of Graeters of Cincinnati (check Graeters Yelp reviews to confirm its ne plus ultra ice cream standing).
The quality of ingredients and inventive flavors make Bob's ne Pop's an ice cream indulgence worth the effort required to procure it. And while you can purchase Dr. Bob's at Bristol Farms, I'd recommend the trip to Upland to enjoy the many flavors available only at the "home store".
Candyland has nothing on this confection mecca.Listed in: Eateries

Phenomenal, rich ice cream - NOT for the faint of heart.
Due to the whopping 16% butterfat content, which is apparently higher than most other ice creams, Dr. Bob's ice cream is SOLID ice cream and very, very rich. I personally love it, but I can't go for the "richer" flavors, like "Scharffen Berger Really Dark Chocolate" because it's too overpowering. My personal favorite is "Strawberries, Sour Cream & Brown Sugar" which is delightfully heaven.
*a little extra info if you're interested: There is an actual Dr. Bob who is a professor at Cal Poly Pomona who developed this ice cream. He only uses fresh and high quality ingredients like Scharffen Berger chocolate, Tahitian & Madagascar vanilla, etc. They also have a stand at the LA County Fair in Pomona every year. -

Well I stopped in at Pop's based off of Daryl's recommendation and I must say that since then I've been numerous times. I'd go more if the operating hours suited but...
Well this review is of course about Dr. Bob's ice cream. It is by far the most delicious ice cream I've ever had. I am sad sitting here writing this damn thing thinking about the ice cream because I know it is too far away and when I'm close to it I can't have it (Pop's will be closed).
Nevertheless! You need to eat this ice cream. I reviewed Burt and Rockies before eating this and had to downgrade them in comparison and now since having Dr' Bob's I've never been back to Burt and Rockies. Sorry Burt. -

I've never been to any Dr. Bob's ice cream locations; but thanks to a friend who was one of this students at Cal Poly Pomona, I was introduced to his ice cream when she was house-sitting his house.
I'm not normally a big fan of vanilla ice cream and i totally loved the Tahitian Vanilla one. I recently tried the Scarffen Berger chocolate I had bought from Surfas in Culver City, and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. It's so flavorful and the small chocolate chip crunch added a little fun to it. Good thing I can only handle 1 serving (that's about half a cup) at a time since it's SO rich, otherwise my trainer's going to have a field day "torturing" me at the gym.
I'm giving him a minus one star since not enough stores carries his ice cream and I couldn't find any vanilla at Surfas :-P -

Ah yes, Dr Bob's. I remember we used to come here when I was in driving school just down the street. One time we came in and the ice cream was expiring that day, so the lady working behind the counter charged us each for one scoop's worth but gave us the entire tubs instead. Yeah, we got pretty ill (not from the expired ice cream but the sheer quantity we consumed). But it was worth it, my friends!

Maybe I haven't tried it right? Dr Bobs has always been overpriced and unimpressive for the cost. I have had strawberry and sour cream with brown sugar. I have had it at the LA county fair twice and at Pops once. If Im eating it wrong or something I would like to know. I say for the price go to cold stone instead. Or a awesome indie ice cream parlor.
