*** Preview: Stranded in the Motor City ***

I stumbled across this wonderful lil space
after I attended a Macallan scotch tasting
event across the street.  A movie poster
enticed me ... I'm originally from Detroit.

The space is modernistic, white, basic
and quite urban. Its genre is indie film.
They serve bottled beer $6.  I likes! ;p

The film screening was emotionally raw
yet entertaining.  Director/Actor Dwayne
Barnes did a phenomenal job to piece a
documentary together from 5 days of film.
It shows a side of Detroit I have forgotten,
or perhaps I'd selectively blocked out for
the sake of my own sanity.  But it's real:

*** I'll ret'n to see another indie soon. ***

Maybe I got lucky last night (Friday before Halloween) and didn't run into a mob of loitering hipsters, as is the case with many small and hip venues in Downtown LA. They screened the silent horror film Nosferatu, which was accompanied by live Noise music, and people were encouraged to wear costumes.

This theatre is clean, quaint, and down to earth...a place you'd want to call your own. I love the fact that they serve drinks by the entrance AND the rooftop. Speaking of the rooftop, they were projecting random clips of horror movies out there as well, with a DJ playing some great tracks. Everyone was there to relax, be happy, and appreciate some art...not to look cool and impress each other.

Another plus is the short walk you can take to Pitfire Pizza (awesome) if you plan on grabbing some dinner/lunch. I checked their website for a lineup of screenings that all seem very interesting, and am totally planning on becoming a regular. I'm so glad I found this place! :)

For the time being, this theatre is a local treasure. As downtown develops and spreads beyond the current historic hub, Downtown Independent will garner increasing attention by cinephiles and barhoppers alike.

There is no other theatre that I am aware of, that boasts two bars: one on the roof and one in the concession stand. Both are useful for the myriad events held there. One can simply watch a movie or an entire festival--I was there for a one-of-kind Sundance shorts event! Equally as often, I have noticed live music combined with films in the lobby, on the roof, and in the main auditorium.

After conversing with the Creative Director, the friendly and unassuming owner took his time answering my questions and regarded my comments with concern. The questions prompted a tour of the facility, which he seemed excited and proud to perform. I discovered the operation is run by a handful of part-time staff and only a skeleton full-time staff, including a quirky projectionist that was reluctant to say hello, but nonetheless welcoming in his porthole to our entertainment. I look forward to seeing how this 11-month old cinema will grow and prosper.

A hidden treasure Downtown!

This new movie theater is really taking off! I wish more people knew about it so they can grow to love it as I have.
I know it sounds hippy-dippy, but the theater has a great energy that you feel as soon as you walk in. Maybe its the chill employees, or the clean, modern aesthetic, but whatever it is... it makes me feel comfortable while I'm there. No one is rude or acts like they are "better than you" the employees are interested in their work, and it shows.
It's fun for relaxing and seeing a movie, or going out and having a blast at one of their rad events.
There are often DJ's on the roof and beer specials! Oh, and if you live/work downtown, the ticket is only $5!!! That's crazy-ness.
I think it's the only indie movie theater downtown...

Also, I like that you can pump your own butter on the popcorn.

Beer and popcorn! What more could you want!?

Went here the other night to film an event put on by AIGA.  They showcased Tomato, graphic designers from across the pond.  Their graphic art is amazing... as was this venue.

Right off of main street, this place is definitely out of place, sitting right next door to a couple of closed down shops, and a couple of dive bars.  But it definitely sticks out in the right way.  It has a completely glass front that looks into a great little greeting area where there were appetizers as well as a snack bar.  Upstairs leads you to an outdoor patio area where the bar and smoking tables were set up.  A nice look at down town and a beautiful look a the skyline.

Into the theater we went to view Tomato's work, and wasn't it great.  The theater was awesome.  All the seats were nice stadium seating, ample space between aisles.  There were even a couple rows of premium seating with the nicest stadium seats I have seen.  The screen was movie theater size, and great picture quality.  Nothing too flashy, it fit perfectly for the size of the theater.

Overall great experience.  Would definitely like to see a film here, and it is probably one of the nicer independent theaters I have been to.

Discovered this gem of a theater when I was visiting home from NYC. New York film aficionados brag about the superiority of the indie/rep scene out here in the city, but NOTHING out here compares to Downtown Independent! Such a youthful, happy staff (love the rooftop bar, love the hottie bartender Ned even more) & a great atmosphere, not to mention some stellar programming! Can't wait to go back for xmas!

I saw Still Bill here over the weekend, and was really impressed by the theater. It's got a great lineup of movies, the seats are very comfortable and clean, love the modern design, and location is nice-you can walk to some bars and restuarants afterwards. Price for a ticket is $12, a bit high for me, or they would have gotten the extra star.

I am giving this one star for now. I haven't been there yet, but I am extremely frustrated with the fact that your web site does not list prices for the movies, nor does it explain how to actually buy tickets. On top of that, nobody answers the phone there, the message is just as cryptic as the web site.

Some of my friends who wanted to go see a movie there no longer want to go because they don't know how much the movie costs nor how to buy tix and they don't want to waste their time.

I want to support an independent movie theater, so PLEASE fix these things!!!

The way to a girls heart is through a really good movie theater.

Okay, perhaps the way to THIS girl's heart is through a really good movie theater.

There are two rows of what I'd like to call, "Lovey Dovey" seats.  These seats offer maximum cuddle capacity, with the lack of separation by armrest.  And yes, there is a place to rest your beverage of choice...so you can keep yourself properly hydrated during the film/cuddle fest.

Concessions include beverages of the alcoholic variety, which can also facilitate the cuddle fest mentioned before.

I'll definitely be back here for more.  Maybe with someone, maybe alone...but I'll be back.

for the first time i implore you to help me.
help me keep a perfect place open
be a benefactor, a patron of the arts
while not pretending pompousness; no airs
while watching films (call them "movies" if it makes you feel more comfortable)
while drinking wine or beer
while not being too cold
or too hot
while it's neither too loud nor too quiet
and backlit blueish cityscapes grace the ceiling and the walls
hell, the city could be burning down and you wouldn't care
because you're resting in a restored theater, doing something.

This is a beautiful, state-of-the-art, single screen theater in downtown Los Angeles.  We're going to feature some of our great independent films at this theater starting with TOOTS, a wonderful documentary that will play from November 21st through November 27th with shows daily at 2,4,6,8 and 10pm.

Downtown needs good independent film

This place is awesome!  Beautiful theater, the floors don't stick, and they have all kinds of projection options so they can play all kinds of cool stuff.  Plus they have a nice beer selection.  I recommend it.

This is a cool revived theater in downtown LA, on the edge of Little Tokyo.  Everything is bright, shiny, new, and as Erik T said, non-stick.  We saw a comedy shorts festival here, and from their schedule it looks like mostly festivals and special events right now.  They have beer and wine in addition to the usual movie candy, so if you've ever felt the urge to say, "I'll have the Cabernet 2004 with Sour Patch Kids," you can do it here.  Rooftop bar too.

Went here for the LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival as well, pretty good space to hold such an event. One large auditorium for screenings, and one upside area for a VIP, etc type room. One of the staff members told me they are going to hold movie screenings on their roof soon. Auditorium has 2 rows of pimp chairs that are extra large, super reclinable and have cup holders/mini tables. Not sure why just 2 rows, but I definitely sat in the pimp chairs when I could. The neighborhood seems to be a bit up and coming (I'm not from LA) but enough around to grab food at before or after a show.
