Review from ollie r.

my pup has been getting groomed here for a few years now and they've always done a wonderful job on her and are very good at listening to and following my instructions. since they moved further away from me it's more difficult to go there tho it just may be worth the extra traveling. every groomer there has been good. tell them petunia sent you!

Terrible service, The front desk service I had received was poor and unfriendly and wasn't the most pleasant.
i asked for my dog to be cut short, they did this but extremely poorly and they left stripes down my dog everywhere, they had missed parts and it was visibly uneven. she was whinning really badly when I went to pick her up, not suprisingly and now is terrified of groomers, she used to love going to groomers! Terrible service, Terrible treatment. Bitterly dissapointed and extreamly upset, they are ment to be trained professionals.
You trust them to care for your dog, and they butcher her this round! My Puppy is 1 years old and under 3 pounds TeaCup Yorkie who means the world to me. her grooming apt was at 2pm and they didn't finsh her grooming til 5:40pm, (10mins til closing), and was very very rude to me and combative and defense, after i waited over 4 hours for her to be finished groomed incorrectly.
Please be advised and protect your animals.1 Previous Review: Show all »

An update after I posted the review:
The owner called me. She was very concerned about what happened and asked for an opportunity to make things right. The commitment to customer service was admirable. I would have changed my review to 2-star rating if I didn't take my puppy to the vet today. The vet checked his ears - one of the ears was clearly not cleaned, and very red. Puppy was given some ointment to deal with the potential infection in his ear. I'm not sure whether this has anything to do with the grooming, but I can't rule it out either.

We must have taken my Havanese puppy there on a day when the stars were not aligned. This was our 4.5 month old puppy's first grooming experience. I showed Valerie a picture of the puppy when we got him, and explained that we'd like to keep his puppy look, so please do the usual shampooing and cleaning but only trimming his hair a little bit. When we saw our puppy 1.5 hours later, his round face became narrow and pointy because WAY TOO MUCH hair was cut. I almost burst into tears when I saw how different he looked - what happened to my cute puppy?! He looked visibly traumatized too, and wasn't himself after we got home.
So the bottom line is, if you love your little one (which I am sure you do), think twice before you take him/her to Downtown Doghouse.Comment from nancy c. of Downtown Doghouse 8/8/2010

Nancy, the owner, and her crew at Downtown Doghouse offer a personal service that far exceeds other grooming centers. As the owner of a dog walking company, it is important to provide information to my clients where they can find the best of the best for their dogs. When it comes to baths, grooming, and love, undoubtedly I recommend Downtown Doghouse. Both my Frenchies, Lucca and Jaxie, as well as my top dog, Frenchie Oliver Lim, love their time at DD and always return fresh and clean and ready to give kisses. Two thumbs up for Downtown Doghouse! --Kara, The Barking Meter

I have a Portuguese Water Dog that needs solid grooming on a regular basis (she doesn't shed). I tried out Downtown Doghouse after The Dog Run NYC closed down last December, and I have to say I haven't been less than ecstatic with this find.
Joann is incredibly skilled as a groomer and is obviously very gentle with Miya. I love that you can easily look into the grooming section of the store. While the service is on the pricey side, it's more than worth it to know that my pup is in great, loving hands. -

I wish there were ZERO stars!
I took my Havanese puppy here for the 3rd (and last) time today! DO NOT bring your puppy here for a cut unless all you want is for him to completely shaved down.
I contacted and spoke with Nancy who admitted that it was their mistake and I asked her for a refund (foolishly I paid them, they did not deserve a dime). She flat out refused to refund our money for this horrible job and we are in the process of taking them to small claims court. DO NOT take your animal here (I see the previous bad review was also for a Havanese).
About my first experience: I read the reviews online and decided to try JoAnn. The reviews on the other groomers were bad, but all of Joanns reviews were favorable so I decided to give her a try. She did a fantastic job! I brought a picture of exactly what I wanted him to look like and his cut/wash/everything was flawless.
About my second experience: JoAnn wasn't available and my Havanese was in desperate need of a cut, so I brought him to another lady (I do not recall her name, she was the younger one with about 2 years experience...it might have been Valerie? I am no 100% sure) again, I brought a picture of what I wanted my Havanese to look like and she cut him to the best of her ability. The cut was uneven, I asked that she shave down his stomach before which she did not, and she took the liberty of cutting bangs on him! They looked awful, all he really needed was a trim and he ended up looking nothing like the picture we sent.
About my third experience: JoAnn no longer works there, so I decided to try someone new. My Havanese had matts on his legs, under his neck, and a bit on his ears. Everywhere else was tangle free. I spoke to the receptionist and explained what I wanted. I told her that I pretty much wanted to keep the same looks but get rid of the matts. I SPECIFICALLY told her to KEEP AS MUCH LENGTH AS POSSIBLE. She said ok.
I returned to see a dog I didnt even recognize! They shaved him COMPLETELY down! They only left his tail and a little poof on his head. I was EXTREMELY upset and spoke with the woman who I told how to cut him and she told me she "misunderstood". She said that usually owners want to shave dogs completely down, I don't care about what owners "Usually" want, I told her to KEEP AS MUCH LENGTH AS POSSIBLE. Whats worse is when I got home, I noticed he had about an inch long cut on his ear.
I have pictures and video of this horrendous cuts.Comment from nancy c. of Downtown Doghouse 1/26/2011

Hi, my name is Lily and I just had to write this review to let you know about my experiences at the Downtown Doghouse. First off, I want to thank my dad, Pete for bringing me there for baths and spa days. His first pooch, Maxie who lived for 13 years absolutely loved coming for baths and great care by Joanne. Even though I never met Maxie and Joanne is no longer a groomer at the Doghouse, I let him bring me here when I was a young puppy. That was 2 years ago and I honestly can't wait to come back. Every time we walk down the block, i try to pull into the store, if not for a bath, just for a look around at what's new....and maybe a treat. They are always friendly, Nancy the owner is great and accomodating and most of all, it's a great experience. Anyway, I want to let all my dog friends in the hood know that I really enjoy coming here and would recommend it to all...humans and pooches alike.
Lily, the very spoiled bulldog. -

Owner Nancy and her staff are incredible! My French Bulldog, Jaxie, loves her baths at DD. Nancy makes sure to get us in whenever we need it. Their new location is an asset to the business -- beautiful, spacious, cool, and efficient. While we all miss Jo (a gift to the grooming world), Hannah has certainly held her own and made the experience delightful. The price may be more expensive than the big name dog stores, the service is just like a Mom & Pops shop and worth every dime. Thanks DD!!!

I called Downtown Doghouse a few weeks ago and they were able to squeeze my dog in for a last minute appointment. My dog is a total baby about the groomers (or just being left alone with anyone but my boyfriend and I). Luckily they were fast and thorough-- they finished in about 20 minutes and he looked great! He also was much calmer than he usually is at the groomers. The staff was very nice, accommodating, and talented.

Best groomers I've found in NYC. I've been to a couple of places before Nancy opened her shop. My dog either got knicked or I would hear of dogs cowering at other shops - NEVER AT DOWNTOWN DOGHOUSE. Riley even goes nuts when he runs into them on the street he likes the women there so much. I love that my dog doesn't come back reeking of cheap cologne, nor does he get some stupid bandana - he just comes back to me looking better than when he went in. They really listen to what you want and their cuts are fabulous. Plus, last time I was there they gave him a blueberry facial - I have no idea what that is but it is a little sad when your dog gets better pampering than you do.

I've been bringing my dog (maltese) here for grooming ever since he was a little pup! JoAnn does an excellent job every time! I've heard some horror stories about other dog owners' experiences at some of the other places and I'm so grateful that I have a reliable and trustworthy place to take my baby to for grooming. I love it that every time I call to make an appointment that they recognize my dog's name. I highly recommend Downtown Doghouse for all your dog's grooming needs!

Our dog was in serious need of a cut and bath so I called Downtown Doghouse and I was lucky to get an appointment on the same day. Everyone was super nice and they followed my exact instructions on how to groom our dog. By the way they were treating our dog and the others, I could tell they pay quite a bit of attention to the dog's well-being. Will go again!

This place has lost my business. I live in the neighborhood and walked in one Sunday to get my dog's nails clipped. The person in the store quoted me $10 and said she could only do it later in the afternoon. I couldn't make it back that day so returned the following week. After they spent 1 minute to clip my dog's nails, they charged me $18.00. After I explained that I was quoted $10 for the nail clipping, they still insisted on charging me $18.00. The store should have honored their quote and not have charged me the higher price only after my dogs nails were clipped. There are many groomers in Chelsea and I will never return to one so dishonorable.

I wrote a review yesterday saying that the front desk service I had received the few times I went wasn't the most pleasant though I was satisfied with the grooming each time. I received the most pleasant follow up from Nancy, the owner, who was concerned that I'd had ANY unpleasantness from start to finish. Her call and kind words were really appreciated and to me, reflects that customers and customer service are very important to her. Now that's a business to support!
