2 reviews for Downers Grove Golf Club
I LOVE this course. And not just because I live and work a mile away from it (OK maybe that has a little to do with it). I rarely have time for 18 holes, so I like golfing here. The price is right and the course is well kept, and it's a challenging 9 holes.
It's a great course to walk, there are a lot of hills and it will definitely give you some exercise.
The 8th hole is really cool - the tee box is elevated probably 25 feet or so. You walk up a steep path to get to it. I think it's about 180 yards Par 3. Definitely a challenge to pick the right club on this one.
great course, but notoriously slow. There's a manager there called "Van" who is a total tool. He doesn't know much about golf and his course proves it to a "tee"...(sorry for the bad pun)
The course is something of a legend, but you can never get a straight story about its history. Supposedly, it was the FIRST 18 hole golf course in America. It was originally called, "The Chicago Golf Club", but I think that before golf courses were officially sanctioned and I don't think that name was actually sanctioned, thus, the course in Wheaton gets all the accolades for being the "first"...
My biggest gripe with this course is how slow it is. You can easily spend over 3 hours on nine holes. There are a LOT of octogenarians that frequent the place, so you can count on a foursome of guys whose ages add up to almost 400 hitting in front of you. Hell, some are pretty good, but others are just hitting a white ball around.
Nonetheless, the first 3 holes are a thing of beauty...you go down, up, down and WAY up before you finish the 3rd hole on this course. Lots of egos too...you find many guys who just got back from GolfMart with their $4,000 clubs who try to hit from the blue tees and shank it 200 yards to the right.
Not a bad course...bad management though; which is a real turn-off for me.
