Very impressed, just like Mother's Market at home.(H.B. CA.) Picked up all the things we knew the regular grocery store would not have.

Was drawn to DtE by the overwhelmingly positive reviews. Didn't regret the trip, but found myself wondering what all the hubbub is about.
Got two salads -- Greek and fresh spinach/edamame -- and two hot dishes -- spinach and Thai curry. The Greek salad (advertised as vegan, but equipped with prodigious amounts of feta [fine by me, but perhaps not by vegans]) and hot spinach were my faves: fresh and flavorful. The fresh spinach/edamame salad was nothing special, and the Thai curry was bland at best (and the potatoes [in a green curry??] were way undercooked).
Two handfuls of salad and two of curry plus a handful of overcooked rice (it's overcooked if the grains are turned inside out) plus a bottle of water ran $23. I have no problem paying a premium for the natural/organic thing but... yow. I truly hope that most of the money is going to the farmers. -

My guy and I were trying to do our Maui trip on a budget (I realize this is somewhat impossible!), but Down to Earth helped us in our mission. We stopped here on the way to checking into our hotel. We stocked up on fresh fruit and vegetables, local bread, handmade guacamole, a tasty mock chicken salad from the deli, and some breakfast delights like cereal and muffins. We were able to make all our breakfasts and took them down to the beach to eat. And the sandwiches we made were perfect for day trips. By making a meal or so each day, we were able to save a little cash for fun activities but still splurge on some eating out.
The market has all your essentials, from imported favorites from the main land to local Maui specialty items. Some of the breads and other imported baked items could have been fresher, but I realize that they have to make the trip across the ocean. And it is an even better reason to buy local. -

I would recommend Down to Earth to any one craving vegetarian or a really good salad for breakfast, lunch, dinner... They have by far, the superior of all existing salad bars loaded full of fresh veggies and savory hot options, utilizing local produce throughout. In-house made salad dressings like papya seed, tofu tahini, yogurt dill... all so delicious and essential to dip the chickpea fritters in! THE BEST fresh organic veggie juices, like the v-8, awesome veggie ruebens, garden burgers, quesadillas, warm local staff and EXCELLENT produce, bulk bin and dried herb sections. VERY EXPENSIVE. I suppose you could classify Down to Earth as a specialty shop.... if you consider vegetarian as a specialty.

The salad bar is amazing! My family and I are not vegetarians but health conscious people and we go there just for salad bar lunches when we're in Kahului. If you're like us and want to try everything (like the yummy sweet potato salad) the salad can get pricey as it goes by weight. The hot foods bar can be hit or miss, some very good, others bland as hell and look like they have been congealing there for days. I recommend sticking with just the salad. Their bakery also has some good items.
The rest of the store is a mecca for vegan/vegetarian hippies from upcountry who apparently have a lot of money to spend on organic non-bleached tampons and the like. I wouldn't do my grocery shopping there, maybe just one or two specialty items. -

Quick stop to check out the store before departing off the island. I love a store that cater's purely to vegetarianists, raw foodies, and vegan heads.
Slightly comparable to Whole Foods, with a nice selection of all the veg-friendly and organic items.
Great for a quick splurge and stock up on goodies to take on the plane! -

Nice selection of health foods. The produce section is mostly organic and had a large variety. There were also many cooked vegetarian foods available. The only complaint would be the prices but I guess everything on the island is more expensive than the mainland. Highly recommended.

We saw this walking to a shaved ice place we wanted to go to, and my husband wanted to stop in for some pineapple. The store was nice - very clean and cute. Lots of natural food and organic produce. We wanted to eat some fresh pineapple, so we asked one of the employees if they would cut up a pineapple for us. She was very nice and agreed to cut it up for us, so we bought it, brought it back to her, and she cut it up into pieces for us. It was incredibly nice and made for a really great experience.

If you are a vegetarian, this is a must stop!! It's 2 minutes from the airport, so I suggest you stop here pick up some supplies and then head to your accomodations.
A little pricey, but you'll find what you need. -

I love health food but this place is a rip off. The one cup container I had paid 6 dollars for was only half filled. The workers at the deli hardly pay attention to what they are doing. They did not alert me when they had finished making my avocado wrap.
The only redeeming quality about this place is the vast selection of organic and whole foods. -

Jenette in Wellness/Vitamins is so helpful, sweet and knowledgeable.
Tons of sales and great special ordering system! -

No offense to all of the previous yelpers who seem to really like this place, but in comparison to their University branch I like to go to on Oahu, this branch isn't as good. My main complaint is their salad and hot entree bar. They must have a third of the selection of hot entrees in comparison to their University branch that I'm used to. Plus I personally felt that the enchilada and pasta dishes I sampled needed extra seasoning. I can't say for sure if I would return...

We came here on both trips to Maui. We did not eat anything here. We came here because my husband who is always burning hot caught a cold because he froze himself out while staying at the hotel in California. So we had to get natural cold remedy's. Unfortunately I am allergic to Pineapples. We were last on Maui on Lei day 2008. They were giving away free Maui Pineapples on Kaanapali Beach because it was Lei day. I could not eat them because of my allergies. I have heard that Maui Pineapples are far superior to other Pineapples. My husband tried them and could not taste them because of his cold. So he had to go to Down to Earth and get a cold remedy and by the end of the week he could finally taste the pineapples! Thanks, down to earth!

You'd definitely expect more of these types of stores and restaurants on Maui. Down To Earth ought to open up a store in Kihei as the Hawaiian Moons there just doesn't compare.
This place is great for organic/vegan/veggie diet staples, there's a fantastic hot bar, and deli, as well as a wide variety of dried goods, grains, and beans.
The only major gripe I have about this place (mostly in the last couple years) is the majority of the deli staff. They don't speak English well enough to communicate with customers and they aren't trained to work in a health food store. This is clear from the answers to basic questions. For example, vegan vs. veggie options are clearly marked on all hot bar items and menu items, yet several staff members that I've encountered to make me a non-dairy smoothie, have had trouble understanding simple substitution requests. One woman, mistaking my request as a question got out the soy milk to show me that there was no dairy in it. Also, they make smoothies inconsistently (and not very well).
Other than that, Down To Earth is very clean, well-stocked, and has great store hours. They also post their hot bar recipes online. Even if you haven't tried their mock-chicken tofu and you're reading this review, you will be compelled to send me at least one Yelp compliment after you follow this recipe: http://www.downtoearth...Listed in: Maui No Ka Oi

As a mainlander, this place is an oasis of healthy goodness in a land of fried foods and heavy starches (aka Hawaii - apologies to locals, maybe I've just eaten at the wrong places during my stay).
The deli was quite nice. I had an Indonesian wrap: tofu, shredded carrots, other veggies, a peanut sauce. Also a freshly squeezed orange juice.
If I were starting my visit over, I'd do my shopping here and have come by to eat lunch a couple times. -

We like to pop in here when we get off the plane to pick up a few things on our way to Kihei.
Good selection of natural food and supplies but if you go here right after landing, be aware of the prices...not cheap but not too outrageous since it is a natural store.
They also have a steam table should you not be able to wait to get to your destination. -

Great selection of organic local produce and good bulk food selection. Prices were very reasonable for high quality food; we got lots of snacks for our road trip to Hana!

We ate there 3 times during our week in Maui... great salads and veggie wraps. Only recommendation would be to add some additional sandwhich choices.

Good vegetarian offerings and reasonable prices. Their bakery counter is really great too. This is a great place to stock up on healthful food items for snacking or even preparing your own meals while vacationing in Maui...my GF and I saved lots of money by doing so.

I looked all over for a certain chai tea mix - and only Down to Earth had in in Maui.
Also came away with organic apple sauce for our baby and some great ginger mix that I like to put in a cold light beer.
This is a great spot to pick up healthy food of all sorts. A lot of locals shop there and since I'm from out of town - it's a nice spot to go to and not feel too much like a tourist! -

This place is AMAZING!!! Just came back to the Mainland from an 8 day vacation in Maui, my friend and I went to Down to Earth almost every day. the Salad/hot food bar is amazing!!! In my opinion the food is 10x's better than the salad/hot food bar at Whole Foods. It's so so good. They also have sandwiches..I tried the turkey one, the red pepper hummus wrap and one of the tofu sandwiches and all 3 were really good! They have a wide variety of things to buy in the store as well. The service was excellent, everyone was so friendly, and I was addicted to their vegan lemon cookies, one of the best cookies I've ever had.

This place is awesome. I had a stomach ache for the first three days in Maui due to the total lack of organic/natural foods. I couldn't even find a decent salad anywhere! I just happened across Down to Earth while driving through Kahului.. It has a really great selection of sandwiches, wraps, soups and a salad bar. The Red Pepper Hummus Wrap is awesome- it was a huge relief after eating greasy, unappetizing, unhealthy foods. It was fresh, crisp and tasty. Whole wheat wrap, sprouts, tomatoes, onions, red pepper hummus, tofu, mmm soo good! I wish I had discovered this place upon first arriving in Maui and I would have saved myself some unpleasantness.. Two thumbs up for going against the tide and offering an alternative!!

Excellent selction of gluten-free items, but a little pricey. Their salad bar is good and has gluten-free selections of ready-made foods as well.

This is a great little place to pick up a fresh salad or gourmet sandwich/wrap! They use all organic ingredients and have some very tasty recipes. They serve your turkey, tuna salad, grilled chicken favs also it is also a great place for vegetarians. It's not too far from the airport so you can hope in on the way to airport or right before a trip upcountry. We meant some locals at the place and their swear by the quality and definitely were not the people I expected to be in there. Seems like most in Maui are really careful about their health. Can't wait to go back to this place when I visit Maui in the future!

love this place and i'm not even vegan! I had their rainforest sandwich and it was delish. I've heard a lot about it since we have one in honolulu but never bothered to go because parking was hard to find. But after coming here, i know what the fuss is all about! they have a vast selection sides that you can serve yourself and are vegetarian friendly, deli sandwiches that are made to order, and a decent selection of organic and health foods for a health nut like myself. Yum-o
