YAY! Super hair did action! There's nothing like being completely stoked about a great haircut. It's been years since I've had that feeling. I'm one of those people who have no problem paying a whole bunch of money or just going to Super Cuts for my hair depending on my mood and wallet. I have a pretty basic do so have never really needed much in terms of upkeep. The last time I paid more than $50 for a cut, I was really not happy. I gave them another try and was even more not happy. The next time, I just went to Great Clips, paid $14, and was pretty stoked. I got used to the cheap place but realized recently I was ready to spend a little extra so I could get more specialized attention and an actual 'style'. And it was so worth it!
I've heard so many great things about Down at Lulu's for quite awhile now. I checked out all the reviews and thought, "Shit, I should definitely check it out!". I got an appointment with Seth and Seth is so great! A total sweetheart with a really great personality. I had a lot of fun talking with him while he did his thing. He really pays attention to what you want and checks in with you all along the way. I really like that. I came out looking great. I went food shopping after my appointment and a woman stopped me to tell me how much she liked my hair. Haaaayyyyy!!!
I kinda almost don't want to leave a review because I don't want Seth to be all booked up next time I need an appointment. But that would just be plain selfish of me, wouldn't it? Besides, free bang trims on top of the best haircut ever? The people's gots ta know!
I totally love Seth and will be sticking with him, but I do have to say that the woman stylist (a totally stylin' and sexay! woman) was doing an amazing job on the woman next to me. So you all should book with her instead. Heh heh. Oops. Sorry, Seth.
Confession: I take bathroom breaks just to admire my haircut.
I got a haircut at Down at Lulu's after a looong time without one, so I was kind of desperate for someone to help. Tina was nice to talk to, and the shop is really cute. It was fun to browse vintage stuff while I waited. I just have 2 complaints:
- She was pretty rough with my head. I know it sounds silly, but the shampoo kind of hurt.
- She got my hair to a point where it probably would have looked great when it dried... and then she started chopping into it! My hair is very straight and light, and does not look good with serious layers. She didn't check with me before doing it. I would have spoken up, except we had already had one exchange where I got the "just trust me, I'm the expert" treatment. She was cutting with my hair parted exactly in the middle; when I pointed out that I part on the side, she said she would part it later, and that's just how she cuts and has been doing it that way for 18 years. Basically, I didn't feel included in the process, and the result was a hairstyle that is totally wrong for my head.
This wouldn't be a big deal if I were paying $25 for a haircut. I would just go get another. But at $60, I will have to spend a few months with my hair in a ponytail before I try again.
For months I'd driven by Lulu's intrigued by their vintage-tastic displays, so when my fish pedicure brought me to the 'hood, I beelined towards the pink sign.
The place went all Back to the Future on me. The outfits, retro furniture and posters, old records, it was like time travel, BAM! Hurled into the time where people wore outlandish things in newfangled fabrics that suffocated your skin and everyone wondered why they smelled so badly.
Lucky for us now, we've got automatic washing machines and dry cleaners and the like, and the clothes have had decades to air out. Lucky for me, 80s designers had a penchant for blindly bright silks, and I scored an awesome red number for five buckerooos! Paired with a black eelskin fan purse just whispering to me from the hook, I'd call myself dead sexy. LOL. They also boast a great boot collection.
And get this, they do hair too. So whatever era you're looking to channel, you can complete the look beehive and all!
I know Down at LuLu's doesn't need anymore rave reviews. Everything everyone is saying is true. It's cute. There's eye candy everywhere. But I'm here to right about DANNY. Lovely, talented Danny. I went and got my haircut by him today and it looks amazing. I never knew that this fine limp head of hair could have this kind of volume. He gives a phenomenal shampoo where I almost fell asleep in the chair and then proceeded to give me a few tips to try at home while all the while making me totally comfortable and engaged. I know he's going to book up super quick so you best get in there now while you still can!
I had my haircut by Tina a few weeks ago. It was a great men's cut! I'm picky, but didn't quite know what to ask for. I basically said I wanted it funky, but not outrageous, a little punk, but mature. From that vague description, she gave me great cut that looks good in any condition. I have short-ish thick wavy hair and have had bad luck with most other stylists I've tried. i decided to pay a little more and it was worth it!
Cute little place. A few nice items but seems to be overpriced for thrift shop left overs. Salon is ok but also HUGELY overpriced.
The stylist seems confident and knows what shes doing but also doesn't seem to friendly. I was too intimidated to speak up to hear about my hair.
Besides walking out with an adorable haircut by Lulu's new star, Danny, I also found a gold onesy that fit perfectly (!) and turquoise jelly shoes in a size 8! It was affordable too. This place rules! I would highly recommend Danny for anyone who gets nervous about letting other people touch their hair (me!) My hair looks sooo much better and he was cracking me up the whole time. Thanks!
This place is pretty darn cool. In search of a theme party dress, I was lured in by the rack of clothes outside which were simply marked "FIVE BUCKS" And unlike some stores you go to where there's a sale rack, but it's full of crap, I actually found two dresses on the rack that fit well, were in good condition and looked cute. Yay vintage! Although I got there around 6:45 and their closing time was seven, the staff members were totally cool and told me to take my time and browse as long as I wished. I love when people are cool like that. I probably wouldn't find myself in this spot to get my hair done since they seem to do lots of brightly colored dye jobs and funky stuff like that, but I'll definitely be back for some serious vintage finds...clothes, jewelry, costumes....they seem to have it all and at great prices in a cool little setting. Down at Lulu's, you're a winner! :p
Lulu's is like hair disneyland...it effing rules. Tina, Seth & Mitra are the coolest kids on the block. Even a homicidal hairdresser-fearing maniac such as myself can trust the kids of Lulu's to give me a bangin' hairdo everytime.
ps- Danny & Erin are hot little McNuggets, yet another reason to hit up Lulu's.
Me and my best friend were driving up and down Telegraph looking for the skills dj workshop and coincidentally saw this cute little boutique
We both looked at each other and screamed "THRIFT STOREEEE!!!" I parked my car and we enter thrift heaven.
The shoes are the most adorablest I've ever seen. The racks were filled with cute vintage clothes. There were also many other jewelry, purses, and other adorable little things.
The salon part of the shop looked very nice and professional. By glancing at the price, I'm sure it is professional. But no haircut for us--maybe next time ;)
The whole decor is wonderful, so even if you stop by and wasn't able to find something or get a haircut, the decor makes it worth all the while.
Yay, 5 stars for this cute little gem!
Tina always knows exactly what to do with my hair, even when I came in the first time and it was a mess of split ends and poof. She makes me look good, and I can check out the old time shoes on the wall at the same time. She's also just fun! A friend of mine went to Seth and reports the same goodness with him. If you want a great cut and some great folks, check this place out.
I committed hairdresser adultery to sneak over to Berkeley/Oakland for a haircut with Seth, but sometimes that's what it takes to change your hairdo. I've always been deathly afraid of razor haircuts but he convinced me to trust his blade skills when I asked him to turn my Amelie-ish bob into a Duran Duran/skater boy cut. People say you're supposed to cut short short hair every 6 weeks but I didn't have to go back for 3 months since it grew out so nicely. Seth is super cute and super sweet (he has a boyfriend so curb your desire - or not) and strikes a good balance between giving you guidance on what your hair can/should do but also listening to what you want. He also gives free bang trims and was so nice when I sheepishly asked to come back in after the second haircut to shape it a little differently after I had thought about it some more.
The store is worth a visit on its own--well-selected vintage, records, zines, crafty art work, Cyndi Lauper gum. And they're always playing good music, lots of 80s booty-moving tunes. So go to Lulu's, get your hair cut, pick up a new-old jean jacket or some leather ankle boots, then pop on over to the White Horse down the street and dance under the disco ball.
Down at Lulu's is great! Seth has been doing my hair for the last 2 or 3 years and I'm happy everytime I leave.
He really understands what I'm going for and listens to me when I tell him how much length to cut. I usually have pretty split ends by the time I come in for a haircut (about once every 4 months) and he gives me a nice conditioning treatment before the cut which does wonders.
They have cool new & used records, and I've bought many a vintage shirt there too!
Check em out!
Best place to get ALL the gossip!!!
my favoritest place to loiter!
i know you're only three years old but the city needs to declare this place a historical landmark already!
It's unfortunate for both myself and everyone who has to look at me that I moved to Los Angeles from Oakland. Because even though that was 1.5 years ago, I still won't let anyone else touch my hair besides Seth. What this means is that I spend most of my life in Hollywood looking like a sloppy, overgrown Cousin Itt and walking into telephone poles because I can't see through my bangs. But oh well. I just don't trust anyone here to give me a haircut like the ones Seth gave me for so many years.
Both Seth and Tina give amazing haircuts, and they specialize in looks that are already so cool you don't have to worry about styling them a bunch at home. Seriously, I had the same haircut for like five years and never did anything to it besides a casual blow-dry. But every single person WHO EVER LIVED complimented me on it. I totally looked like a MODEL. Well...okay, I'm five feet tall with a pasta pouch, but I looked fucking good.
Don't go in and order a "Friends" haircut or frosted tips or some shit. Seth and Tina (and Mitra!!!) want to make you look GOOD. But seriously, no matter what you want, if you communicate it well, they will make it happen fabulously. And they have an unbelievable selection of vintage clothing, jewelry, and knick-knacks even if you don't do the hair.
So go, get a haircut, catch up on some gossip, and look at all that stuuuuff!!!!! All to the tune of some slaying 80s hair metal by dudes with big ones (if Tina's working) or killer gay punk by dudes with big ones (if Seth is). What can I say--THEY LOVE THE BIG ONES!!!
And I love THEM!!!
AWESOME.
I first noticed Down at Lulu's about 6 months ago. I'm not sure how long it's been around but one day we were driving to breakfast and the pinkness of the store front startled me, I slowed down to ogle and was like "what the heck is that store?" to my BF. He wasn't sure either but our curiosity was peaked. Since that day, I have continued to drive by, always admiring the cool kids brigade that usually lines the sidewalk in front of the store, often there's some sort of bbq going on or sidewalk party of sorts. And every time I wanna stop and hangout but due to my nerdy nerves, I usually chicken out and think.. next time...
So yesterday my friend and I agreed on our way to run errands, we were stopping by and checking this place out. Again, I have no idea why I waited so long.. this store is so sweet (all meanings of the word included). They were in the middle of adding to their already amazing window display when we came in, hanging up a particularly awesome cloth banner/poster of Ms. Tammy Faye in all her colorful glory. We were welcomed upon our entrance, offered help and plenty of sincere casual conversation while inside, and were invited back when we walked out even though neither of us ended up purchasing anything.
A+ for customer service!
As for their vintage, it's great. All items I looked through were carefully selected good pieces, in nice condition and reasonably priced. I found several cute dresses but just didn't feel like trying them on so next time... They also had a decent collection of vintage Levi's jeans/cords, flannel shirts, sweaters, cute skirts, etc.
Apart from clothes, they've got records which I should have perused but again, I guess I wasn't in much of a leisurely mood, so next time... a ton of cute vintage sunglasses, a decent stash of 60's/70's/80's boots as well as ladies heels, wedges, and flats... truly they've packed a ton of stuff in this somewhat small & cozy space.
Oh, and I forgot, it gets better, they do hair too! And from the looks of the reviews, they do an incredible job at it!
So, I don't know.. I'm just not sure how this place could get any better,... vintage clothes, records, nice people, cool hair cuts, oh, AND they were rocking some Pet Sounds...
I AM IN AWE.....
I have been getting my hair cut by Seth for the past 2 years or more because he always "gets" what Im trying to do- and I almost always get a lightly different style every time. Even when I don't come in with a picture, he totally listens to me, and goes slow so it comes out just the way I thought it would. People compliment my haircuts all the time and I know it's because of Seth!! YAY LULUS I LOVE YOU FOREVER AND EVER

Hmmm. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for vintage treasure-hunting when I stopped in on a recent Friday.
I headed here based on the Yelp reviews, hoping to have some retro fun. Didn't see anything I loved. Wasn't greeted until I had already finished browsing and was about to head out the door.
Because the Yelpers love it so, I will try again when I'm in a different mood.
I got my hair cut and colored by Tina at her former salon and was bummed to hear she was moving but thought she did such a great job I would follow her to her new place. Down at Lulus is great! Its a fun and funky atmosphere with a ton of stuff to look at while you wait.
Tina always listens to exactly what I want and does exactly what I ask for. Her cuts are great and her color always turns out amazing. I have fairly long hair and go to Tina for a cut and a full head of highlights. Anyone that gets highlights done knows that this can be a somewhat of a long process but Tina is so great at what she does that I was out the door in 2 and a half hours with an impeccable hair cut and beautiful blonde highlights. Thanks Tina!
A friend was visiting last weekend from Montreal, and despite her travels in Canada, the UK, India, and throughout the US, she has been unable to find a truly amazing vintage leather jacket in her size--until, that is, we made a stop at Down at Lulu's. My friend wears about a US size 20, and we found an incredible, deep burgundy vintage jacket for her that made her sweet face light up like little girl's in a princess costume. She had to twirl, she was so pleased!
This store is great for regular and plus sizes up to about a size 20. It's very hard to find vintage beyond this size, but I wish they had something more than accessories and a hippie dress with small arms for a size 24 girl like me.
However, Down at Lulu's, you've done pretty right by the big girls, and especially for vintage! Keep it up!
Awesome place. Very vintage punk rock glamor with a touch of sass. Kinda like Cyndi Lauper I'd imagine.
They had a wonderful selection of crazy dresses and coats. And though they were a touch overpriced, my friend got an awesome "Penny Lane" jacket for half price.
The puppies were also so cute chilling inside. Aww
If you want to get complements on your outfit, go get some stuff at Lulu's.
I've bought number of dresses and sandals, and every time I wear them, someone asks me where I got them.
Tina and Seth (and other staff as well) are very friendly and super nice. Anyone can have such a pleasant shopping/haircut experience there.
Interior decor is uber cute even inside the bathroom! Where else on earth can you shop/get haircut with cute bathroom!?
I come here when I feel fancy, because here, people are expected to buy shirts that are two sizes to fancy for them, and I do, because their clothes make you look damn classy, like my rugby shorts while doing lunges... classy. It is owned by "hunx" he is a member of gravy train, I am sure that someone else owns it too. But I don't know who that is. They have a fun selections of vintage clothing, also a hair salon. I have seen almost the entire gravy train group here... but I don't want to be that person and ask them to sign my cock while I suckle on their teets, but I'm sure it could happen.... or not... mainly not.
Everyone I have brought here has liked it, and I am more concerned with everyone else's likes and dislikes. I'm a giver what can I say, I give.
Jesus loves you!
_update_
hunx likes my review. so Down at lulu's gets an imaginary 6 mexican star rating... it's pretty much a pinata filled with hot sauce and chicharones.
They also have good albums and other neat-o chotchkies. That's right I used neat-o.
Tina gave me a great haircut, and this place is as authentically hip as you hope an Oakland salon would be. The DJ in me loved the first thing I saw walking through the pink doors was a box of vinyl for sale. Cool little vintage clothes store too. Genuine people, and I'm happy to support a local spot like this. They earned their stars.
I followed Seth here from his last salon. The fact that I cross the Bay Bridge to get my hair cut by him speaks volumes, especially if you were to see the line of cars waiting at the toll both on the return trip.
Seth always does a good job and he listens to my suggestions and makes his own. I'd recommend him highly to anyone.
Oh, and the music they play in the store is kick ass!!!
I've been getting my hairs cut and sometimes colored by Seth and Tina for almost ten years now and, damn, it always looks good!
Not only can I depend on Lulu's for fabulous locks, I've also gotten most of my all-time favorite clothes there, and for super-reasonable prices.
And there's always sure to be a fantastic soundtrack while you shop, loads of trashy mags to read and even a full candy bowl to satisfy your sweeth tooth. AND their window displays never fail to make me smile!
THE BEST!!!!!!
Checked it out with some friends.
It's cute, but that is as far as it goes...
Nothing to cater to the heavier ladies. What a way to represent the community. The associates don't do anything but look bored whilst staring at the wall. Hey, dude, at least try to offer a hello? Maybe a nod in our direction? Thanks, but really, no thanks. Another pretentious prat boxed in his own vinyl world. Can't comment about the salon, because I never had my hair done here. The cuteness was quickly and swiftly killed.
Mitra is wonderful. I went in like a trembling virgin and she caressed my hair and made me realize that my hair could be *so much more* than a long, plain, well-cared for mane. She showed me how to tease, rat, and style my hairdo, and then gave me truly one of the best haircuts I've ever recieved or seen on anyone else. My friends had me turn around and turn around... hair is not something I change, ever, and yet Mitra ushered me into the new and exciting world of style and product so enthusiastically and reassuringly. I'll never look back. My new hair is AWESOME! (see the photo! isn't that great?)
One note, Mitra is an independent agent and only accepts cash. The store itself (an impressive array of clothes that all seem to perfectly fit me in both size and style) does accept cards, but Mitra herself does not.
Thanks, Yelp. I'm down with Lulu's, too, after the purchase of some mirrored retro specs, a mohair cardigan off their bargain rack, and a groovy new "do" thanks to Mitra. I'd marry Mitra if I could, but we're both already married. I look like Ann Margret now, in a good way.
All this because I found 'em on Yelp!
I asked for an a line haircut and ended up with more of a u.
I thought maybe bailey b's experience was a fluke, but now i am sporting my own bowl haircut.
you have been warned!
2 stars only cause I would probably shop here again had they not earned a place in my Horrifying Haircut Hall of Fame.
They should really start having before and after pictures because Down at Lulu's is like a make over. Seriously it's like you walk in a little tarnished from the world and you walk out shimmering.
...oohh girl it's good.....
I always get the best haircuts of my life there, cute clothes and keep running into my favorite purses from there one after another.
I even got mugged while I had one of them and got in a tug of war with my mugger over the purse and then tried to see if I could find where they dumped it after they took off with it. I fucking loved that purse.
oh and i met my current date two days after a haircut from Tina and wearing a new dress from the store.
Whenever I get my haircut it's my facial expression that chooses the style. My mouth says "different" and "short," but once the hair hits the floor my face scrunches and all the stylist hears is "Don't cut any more!" I usually come out with the same cut, just a tad shorter.
Thankfully Seth is a master of the styler - stylee relationship. He listened to what I wanted, put his own hip twist to it, and took it slow. He cut a little ... checked if I was convulsing ... and then cut some more.
In the end I had a super cute, edgy cut and every part of me was happy. Within weeks two of my co-workers copied my cut! No joke!
The owner, Tina at Lulu's did a fabulous job on my hair. I have been searching for a great hairstylist and I found her! She is the only stylist that actually did what I asked. The dye has not faded at all and after 6 weeks, I still look freshly dyed! My hair is shiny and gorgeous!
The store part of the salon is great, too! Good prices and lots of great 45s and LPs. I highly recommend this place!
I dig my short cut. It's a tiny tad more conservative than I had asked for but it's really growing on me and I think Tina has a good eye.
UPDATE: three months later, this is still a good cut! Wow! Extra star for Tina!
Every single time I have stepped into Lulu's I always walk out with a killer hip cut. Seth is the man, but don't be afraid to try Tina either. Awesome music, killer pink walls, and plain cool!!! Better than all those stuffy salons around SF. This place rocks!!!
Thanks to Down at Lulu's I found my first pair of vintage shoes for my size 8 feet. I love vintage clothes, but when it came to shoes it seemed that vintage stores only carried shoes for really really tiny feet. It made me wonder if the people who originally wore the shoes all came from short families or if they were malnourished. That's beside the point ...
I love dropping in and browsing through their inventory because the music is always fun and the people there are friendly. Maybe someday I'll be brave enough to get my hair done, too, because it seems like it would be oh-so diva.
No surprises here - the best music I've ever heard in a beauty salon. I mean, how many times can you get your hair cut to "Paninaro '95" anyway? If Girlschool and Estrus Records opened a beauty salon, this would be it. I waited an extra three weeks so I could afford this 'do, and it was worth it. Yay Tina!
Too bad you know she's gonna blow it all on eBay. From one record whore to another, you rock, Lulu's!
Finding a new hair stylist in a new town is scary. So scary that I put off getting a hair cut for over a year. (A year and 4 months to be precise). Mitra was absolutely amazing. She listened to what I wanted and had no problem adapting what I wanted with what works for my face. And she offers bang trims between cuts! AMAZING!
I am so pleased that my first hair experience in the bay area turned out as well as it did. I'm pretty sure I won't stop smiling for days.
I have driven by Down at Lulu's a million times on the way home from dropping my BF off at work.... I always drive by real slow at stare at the pretty window displays..... I almost got to go in one day when my BF was across the street dropping off a resume, but alas he came back to the car to fast for me to sneak over there.... well today I finally got to go in and even better I got my "herr did" by Seth.... Fortunately for me Seth takes appointments on Sundays... (I work Tuesday- Saturday, typical salon hours)... Seth and I had a lengthy conversation about my color and what I could realistically achieve without damaging my hair.... My hair came out beautiful and shiny... I haven't been able to stop running my fingers through it or stop staring at it in the car visor mirror.... Plus Seth is just fabulous along with the space!!!!
Went back this weekend with about a half hour to kill. Walked out with two new dresses--one vintage for $20 that would have been at least $30 on eBay or in some other vintage stores, and one H&M number for $16--in less than 20 minutes.
