Douglass Playground is a cute little park with a playground, open field, bathrooms and 1 tennis court/basketball court. The park used to be part of an old rock quarry, which was turned into a park in the 1930's, so the cliffs/rocks provide a very dramatic backdrop to the area that is quite beautiful. Just be aware that it is more a small neighborhood park and not so much a destination park. The playground equipment is adequate but fairly old/tired, the slide area is always closed and the city has closed off the upper path that used to go around the ridge. Dogs are only allowed on leash. The field is pretty to walk around, but the cliff/trees cast perpetual shade on the field and it always seems to be damp/muddy so not so good for a picnic. There is however, a picnic table closer to the playground equipment. Still, it is great if you live in the area and up for an outing or quick walk in the park!
Pros: picturesque rocks/hillside and trees, not often crowded, bathrooms, convenient/street parking usually available.
Cons: old playground equipment, shady and muddy field, limited capacity/space for large groupsHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Joe S.San Francisco, CA64Sep 17, 2022
Threw a one year old birthday party here and we had a blast. Facilities are simple but location and wet you are great.

Pretty decent park.
This park doesn't feel as big as it looks on google maps, but a portion of it is consumed by crazy SF hills / cliffs, but there is a large grassy area, a bbq section, a playground and some courts.
Worth checking out, but be warned, if you're coming from 24th street you have a hill and a half to get there -- not easy with a pram.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Wes M.San Francisco, CA3711188402Apr 18, 2007First to Review
Douglass Playground is a large park with an upper and lower field, the lower one containing the playground proper and the upper one being a dog park (which Angela C has reviewed under a separate entry). At first it appears the two are unconnected but there is in fact a steep and narrow trail you can follow. There is also a secret entrance to the park from the end of Carnelian Way.
This park has an excellent hillside location complete with beautiful trees and rock outcroppings, but the whole place has a kind of under-utilized vibe. If only they would get rid of some of the fences (not to mention the batter's box in the dog park) and make it more walker-friendly, it would be a first-class park.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Cee ..San Francisco, CA022Oct 20, 2016
Decided to take my 4 yr old son and 3 year old goddaughter to Dolores Park, as luck would have it I couldn't find parking for my big ol chevy suburban. So I yelped some near by playgrounds, and this one caught my eye.
It is a simple old school playground with 4 swings, a sandbox, monkey bars, a fireman pole, 3 climbing ladders. I love the fact that it is relatively small and enclosed. It is perfect for the little ones! You don't have to worry about losing your kid. No matter where you sit, you can keep a eye on them. There is a big open, flat grassy area, 2 picnic tables, water fountains, and bathrooms. We will definitely be back.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michelle H.San Francisco, CA444120138Oct 16, 2015
Love this park! Migrated over here since there has been a bunch of coyote sightings in my neighborhood dog park! It is a nice big space for my dog to run around! Closed on Wednesdays for maintenance though!

Came here for a little ones birthday party and it's a great place for littles. My friend rented the indoor space so we also had access to chairs and a clean place for food. The park was super safe and wasn't too crowded. There was a ton of room for the kids to spread out. The place felt like your neighborhood park away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

So when you're a child trapped in a slightly-larger-than-a-child-but-only-slightly body, people tend to give you funny looks if you try to play on a playground. And you also feel like an ass if you're taking a swing away from some seven year old.
But here Douglass Playground comes in! I swung on the swings to my heart's content, and the only other people I saw were a couple of dog walkers and two boys playing catch.
Monkey bars were too hard, though. I have not the upper body strength I had as a child....Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Tim L.San Francisco, CA842628Aug 4, 2014
The Upper Dog Park just opened, and it is huge! If there are lots of dogs, it wouldn't notice cause it is big. Dog fountain and also plenty of grass.
Thanks City!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - suz q.San Mateo, CA31807Apr 22, 2013
A really wonderful park -- gorgeous with a grassy hill to set out a blanket & enjoy lunch. Good restrooms. Great for young children -- there are swings, an old school slide, and a fake "truck" with a big steering wheel to drive among other things. It feels very neighborhoody and homey. Two huge thumbs up.
