We're baaaack!!

My daughter had another cheerleading competition early the next day, and we needed a place to stay the night before. Thanks to Priceline, I put in a $46 bid for any 3.5 star hotel along Arden Way, and the Doubletree accepted it (rack rate of $109).

Nothing much has changed since the last time I was here. Still a pretty large hotel, no real noticeable changes in the lobby or in any of the public areas. Good thing I've stayed here before, and familiar with the layout of the hotel. First time visitors would have a difficult navigating through the hotel. The rooms themselves are pretty well sized, and clean, enough room for the 4 of us. Everyone liked the chocolate chip cookies at check-in, of course.

There's an Elephant Bar and Grill, an El Torito Grill, and the Arden Fair Mall all within walking distance of this hotel. Because my family friends went out on their own for dinner, I didn't have a car, so I took a nice, brisk stroll to Arden Fair Mall (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), where I had dinner at Johnny Rocket's (http://www.yelp.com/bi...).

No complaints for this hotel. It was 10 minutes to the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium from here, and the accommodations and amenities were more than for an overnight stay. It was pretty quiet, and we were well rested for the next day.

I was in town for a conference, and I quite enjoyed my stay at the Doubletree Hotel (as much as I ever enjoy hotels, which are admittedly not my favorite).  The staff were welcoming and helpful, the conference facilities more than adequate, and the rooms spacious and comfortable.

My only gripes would be that it's huge and confusing--very easy to make a wrong turn and end up in the wrong wing without even realizing it.  My room was at the very back of the hotel and it felt like I was walking miles to the meeting rooms in the front each day.  The rear of the hotel is right up against the freeway, so there's a bit of traffic noise, and the back staircase smelled and featured a few cigarette butts that remained in place the whole time I was there.  Ick!

The catered food we had for the conference was high quality and provided a good range of options for each meal.  When I accidentally left my cell phone charger in the room after check-out, the lady at the front desk was eager to help me track it down.

Don't know why this place gets such a bad rap, but stayed here during a visit to the California State Fair back in Sept 2008 and it was fine. Best part was the location being a 7-8 min walk from the California State Fair.  And better yet, got it on Priceline for $48/night ($62 with all the taxes and fees).

Bottom line: Super convenient basic hotel when visiting the California State Fair. And numerous restaurants in walkable distance, including Outback Steakhouse and the the Arden mall across the street.

When I first saw this hotel off the freeway I thought "God I hate Sacramento... everything looks like a motel". I chose to stay here over the Sheraton bc 1) cheaper and 2) I wasn't going to be in Sac long. The reviews on this place were pretty mixed so driving here I was a bit worried. The hotel is pet friendly which was a major plus, I wasn't trying to stay at the La Quinta!!

Check in was quick and easy. They give you warm chocolate chip cookies at check in, a major plus... it's like reassurance that if your room is crappy at least you can think it over with a cookie. The walk to the room was like walking in an airport terminal. Everything is so spread out. I didn't really mind but I sure as hell would have had I been wearing heels, divas beware!

The room was really nice. Lots of floor space. The bed was exceptionally comfortable for a hotel bed. Down pillows and comforter and I believe a pillow top mattress. VERY VERY GOOD... had a lot of "support" lol. We ordered room service on both nights and the staff was very friendly. We didn't have any issues the first day but the second day they took FOREVER to bring up our food. As a courtesy they gave us our whole meal for free along with extra cookies. Thumbs up for that :).

A little pricey but it's around everything you need to be around: the mall, eats, freeway, and they accomodate your furry ones.

The hotel is nice. Clean workout room, nice pool, jacuzzi, and clean comfy beds. The hotel food sucks but what are you gonna do. The hotel bar is where its at though. If you're into old chicks shoving 10 pounds of beef into the 5 pound chub this is your place. All kinds of cops and security all up in this mug cause it gets krazy on the weekends. I'm not into the Hip-Hop scene but I was up here for work and needed to get my drink on, so again...what are you gonna do.

This is the hotel we stayed at for my 10 year old's 4th grade trip to Sacramento.  It's no Four Seasons but it did the trick.  Old, but relatively clean and tolerant of 50 screaming 10 year old boys and girls.

My family and I will be back here!  The accommodations were very good for the price we paid.  We found a package on line that included their breakfast buffet for all 4 of us.  The food was pretty decent for a hotel lobby...

The room was clean and comfortable and the beds were great to sleep on.  In room coffee and organic tea.  Pool was clean with a decent hot tub adjacent.

All of the staff was very friendly and helpful.  I haven't been told "Good Morning" that many times by hotel staff in quite awhile.  I'm not sure if some of the other raters were put up in different rooms....but our room was very updated and clean.  We'll be back when we visit the Sac area again...

Eww this hotel needs a major renovation.  I normally LOVE Doubletree hotels, but this felt more like a cheap version of an old Motel 6.

Our room was at the furthest end of the hall.  And when we walked in, I thought we entered a senior center.  It smelled OLD.  Carpet was dingy, furniture was old and dated.

There was crummy brown stuff in the corners of the tub and the floor.  And who can forget the wallpaper from the 60's that was peeling?

Bonuses? The cookie we had to ASK for, and Neutrogena bath products.

Great location, near the freeway across the Arden Mall. The rooms are bigger than a standard room, with walk-out balcony. Plush beds with all down bedding; even the floor has extra padding. All neutragena products: face/makeup-remover wash, face moisturizer (30 SPF), body lotion, shampoo/conditioner.

Room is $50/night on Price-line. I got 2 adjoining rooms.

I went to the Doubletree this past weekend to meet my mom at the Northern California weaver's fair.

I was really, really, REALLY disappointed in the hotel. I help organize and run large (1400 participant) academic meetings, and they did a dozen things totally and completely wrong:

2 years after the contract was signed, they close their primary dining room for the entire length of the conference. Really nice! So there's a huge line through the lobby of people trying to feed themselves at the coffee bar. The understaffed coffee bar. Where they refused to toast a bagel or give you cream cheese "because it is too busy."

Wait at the other restaurant was said to be 20 minutes, but it took 45 to be shown a table, another 10 to get menus, and a total of one hour and  five minutes to be served - and of course, as you'd expect after all this, the food was completely cold. We couldn't even complain about it because the server disappeared, never to be seen again.

Large earth-moving machines and jackhammers were hard at work immediately outside the front door for the entirety of the conference, making it almost impossible to hold a conversation in the lobby.

I am amazed that the hotel walked all over their client like this. I imagine if it had been a group of businessmen instead of mostly-women weavers, this never would have happened. The group should complain, but I'm guessing the contract was negotiated by someone who didn't have the experience to know to put clauses in protecting them from such abuse, so I doubt they'll get anything as much as an apology.

I would never consider this hotel for one of our meetings after what I saw. We usually have them at Marriotts, and now I know why - even when a Marriott falls short of perfect service, it's infinitely better than a Doubletree. I *hope* that this location is just an anomaly and a total embarassment to the chain - if it's the norm, that means all their hotels are this poor.

The plan:  ride out the heatwave in a nice hotel with air conditioned rooms and a nice pool.   I checked Priceline and saw some nice properties downtown Sacramento, but all were booked up.  After a couple of hours of annoying online search, I made reservations at the Doubletree.

I wasn't looking for that much but this place fell short of my expectations.   It's a business hotel with lots of people in business suits going in and out incessantly.   I suppose if your boss is footing the bill, this place ain't bad.   Still, it doesn't much feel like a place to go for a mini-vacation so if that's what you're looking for, you'll be sorely disappointed.   I found the rooms dreary and dark (room 515 is cave-like unless all the lights are turned on) and the TV channels are pathetic, with some 15 channels, tops.

The service was overall quite good.   We had a problem with pay-per-view and they sent over Al, from Engineer, a very friendly older man from Massachusetts who explained what we'd done wrong and made sure the movie would not appear on the bill.   When we ordered room service, the person who brought us our food was extremely friendly.  At the buffet, service was friendly with a smile.   And then there was Raquel...

Raquel at the front desk is a serious PMS bitch with attitude.   She's patronizing and condescending and, quite frankly, outright rude.   Right after we checked in my wife already mentioned she didn't like her.  Since she'd done the check-in, I didn't understand why.  I soon found out.  We asked her about our luggage which we had left with them when we couldn't check in earlier and she said she'd go look.  10 minutes later, she still hadn't come back.   I glance over at the side door and I see her walking out (shift over?) with her purse.  WTF?  I was waiting for help.    The next day when I misplaced my breakfast coupon, she was sharp enough to "remind" me that she'd given them to my wife during check in and that she was doing me a huge favor to give me another coupon.  Condescending and rude.  They need to fire that bitch's ass pronto.

As for the food, breakfast buffet was meh.   I really think I've had better breakfast at Denny's or Lyon's, and I can assure you I rarely give those establishments more than 3 stars.

Next time I am in Sacramento in need of a hotel I will know for certain a place I'm not going to be staying.

My family stayed here this weekend and we will not come here again.  We stayed for two nights.  Housekeeping did not come to clean our room after the first night.  No clean towels, no extra coffee pods for the Wolfgang Puck coffee machine, beds left unmade.  Ugh.  We got home too late to complain about it.

The next morning we complain about the lack of housekeeping.  We arranged for a late check out (2 P.M.)  I packed up most of our stuff and loaded up the car early so we could relax in our room later and the staff wouldn't have to clean around our stuff.  Unfortunately, I didn't pack up everything.  I left some sunglasses, some papers that my husband needed to sort through, and some food.  When I arrive to our room after breakfast, housekeeping is there.  None of our stuff is.  She threw the sunglasses and all of our paperwork away.  WTF?!!  So we expain to her that she really shouldn't throw people's stuff away and make her go through the trash to find it.  Not to be demeaning, but what was she thinking?

So she finds the sunglasses and we just hope that there wasn't anything else important that she tossed.  My husband goes to the front desk to complain.  The front desk only said they would advise the housekeeping manager about it.  And that satisfies us how?  So, in addition to writing this review, my husband got the name of the manager of the place and he'll be receiving a letter about their customer service this week.

Housekeeping debacle aside, other criticisms include: the pool - cloudy and smelled like chlorine = not properly sanitized.  If you can't see the bottom of the pool and you smell chlorine, you need to add more chlorine.  Counter-intuitive, I know, but I have a pool, I can see the bottom clearly and it doesn't smell like chlorine.

On a positive note, the chocolate chip cookies are absolutely delicious.   Also, they ran a shuttle to the fairgrounds which was convenient.  The driver even dropped us off specially at race track entrance.

So this isn't a review that would have received zero stars.  It is a legitimate one star review.

You know that feeling you get when you're sitting by yourself in a hotel room and you're pretty sure some skeezy perv is sitting on the other side of that mirror doing dirty things and filming you for youtube?

That's the feeling I had as I held a washcloth in my hand to peel the comforter off the top of the bed.

My work paid $199/night for me to stay here and sleep with one eye open.

First mistake - booked the room during the week of the State Fair.
Second mistake - booked the room further from where I needed to be.

Thought I would try something different.  Big location.  Service was so so though.

-.5 star: battery dies on the remote control.  I had to replace it with one of my own.

- 1 star: ordered room service.  They called an hour later stating that they got a big order prior to me and forgot all about my order.  WTF!  Didn't;t get to the room until 3am that morning and was up since 5am the prior morning.  Feet hurt.  Didn't want to leave the room.  VERY, VERY HUNGRY!  They came 25 minutes later.  They apologized, but that didn't;t make me feel any better.  At least the sandwich tasted good.

- 1.5 stars: asked for some toothpaste at the front desk.  Three hours later, I had to go get it myself.

Fitness room was not bad.  Equipment was up to date.  Got a good workout at least.

Breakfast (comped because of the on-line room special) was alright.

Would not stay here again though because of the service.

In some ways, this place is a 5, in others, a 1, so we'll call it 3.

The room, billed as "larger" was enormous.  It had a king bed and full sized couch, and still felt huge.  The bed was upgraded to the "Sweet Dreams" style, meaning lots of great pillows, a nice duvet, great mattress.  Everything was extremely clean.  Staff--everyone--was remarkably nice.

There's the 5.

Both Friday and Saturday night, massive parties were going on--not proms but maybe weddings?  Really unclear.  First night, drunks were running all around, sliding down railings and being loud and obnoxious, blocking the doors and saying rude things.  Second night, there was an even bigger crowd of drunks, filling up the entire parking lot.  No totally obnoxious people, but multiple cop cars out front all night--totally WTF!

Our room, all the way down a far wing, was super quiet, but I had to wonder a bit about "the element" which worried me about my safety and that of my car in the lot.

So, there's your one.

For my purposes, a conference at the hotel, this was a good choice, and the location was very close to the highway, a nice mall, and lots of good (and bad!) dining.  Would I return here for any reason other than a conference?  No.  Would I recommend it if it is convenient to your purpose?  Yes.

The layout of the place, if you look at it from a bird's eye, is like a hydra.  Or a medusa.  It's got the fitness center in the middle of about 5 wings of rooms and the fitness center is almost all glass windows.  Talk about fishbowl.

The front desk is nice enough.  They have warm cookies.  I will say that they keep their cookies in a heater type thing to make you *think* that it's fresh baked whereas in reality, it could have been sitting there for a few hours.  Depending on how many people have checked in in the past couple of hours.

I ate at the Sports Bar and the menu was bleh.  I had the soup and salad and it was unmentionable.  Unmemorable.

What did catch my eye and my account executive was the gigantic sign right outside the Sports Bar that said you were NOT allowed to wear anything with a logo, any specific colors, no hats, no bandanas, no scarfs, no head gear of any type, no jerseys.  We both cocked our heads to the side and were like, "Whaaaaa?"

Someone told me there are a lot of gangs around here, I don't know, I only come to Sacramento for work.

This night, there was a Holiday Party going on.  Many middle aged people dressed to the Nines and drunk as a slut.  There may have been more than one holiday party going on because the place was packed.  So many people wandering around, so many cars parked in all corners of the lot.  It was all circular so I didn't know where the eff I was until I almost ran someone over trying to read the sign on the outside of one of the entrances.

My main complaint about this place is that there were some effed up silly girls giggling and running around back and forth and slamming doors.  I know it's not every day you stay at a hotel and it's not every day you can leave the lights on, but not every bachelorette party has to be a display of what you're giving up to get married!!!  All night long.  Shouting, "Hey GIRL, Get over here, I gots someting to shows you!"  Then a heard of horses runs from one end of the hall down to the next, turns on a dime and slams the door.

I didn't like the layout of this hotel, I didn't like the restaurant or the attitudes of anyone other than the receptionist.  There was no sign or indication that this was a hotel and not a row of dormitories.  NO SIGN.  The only sign was the one pointing towards the freeway.  Once you got off, there is no other sign.  You don't even know where the driveway is to enter this property.

For my upcoming trip to Sacramento, I cross my fingers and hope that I don't have to stay here again.  I can't take another restless night.

Clean (newly refurbished room) and comfortable but A LOT of construction was going on when we stayed this past weekend. Not a real negative but it was a little noisy. Located less than 2 minutes from the Arden Fair Mall and Cal Expo Fairgrounds, which is convenient.

The sports bar was closed for remodeling and the layout -kinda an odd wagon-wheel shape- is a tad confusing. If you can locate the (nice) pool, you can find the lobby. Espresso bar, smallish restaurant and mediocre gift shop. Front desk staff were friendly & helpful - the warm cookie was very good.

Elevators are VERY confusing: LL, 1, 2, & 3 floors but our room was on the 4th floor, which is REALLY the 3rd floor because the LL is not labeled as the 1st floor.

Very comfy king-sized bed, lots of pillows (I counted 7 total) and a REAL sliding glass door with a small balcony meant lots of fresh air. The small sitting area was also nice. Neutrogena products in the bathroom, along with a blow dryer, coffee maker, and iron (do people really iron anymore?) Didn't detect cigarette smoke anywhere at anytime.

I'd stay here again but maybe when all the construction is over. My fave thing was the duck pond below our balcony: lots of Momma & baby ducks this time of year. Really Cute!!!

I have gotten some good deals on Priceline with this hotel ranging $40-50 a night.  I love the warm chocolate cookies that you receive when you check in.  Convenient location, right off the Hwy. and across the street from Arden Fair Mall.
The down side, because of the set up of the hotel, there is a center (lobby and restaurant) then 5 offshoots of hallways. The hotel is huge, 450 rooms, with the five hallways of rooms and 3 floors.  There is a distance from the elevator from the center to the end of the hallway.   When you drive to the rooms in the back, it is quite a drive and from a security standpoint, you feel out in the boonies.  The external doors at the end of the hallway doesn't  always close.
It does feel old, the carpets are worn and there are water spots on the ceiling of the rooms.  Dog friendly.

The Doubletree is a nice place to stay in Sacramento.  The rooms were clean, well kept and fairly convenient.  The hotel layout was confusing at first, but since there are many outside entrances it is easy to park near your room.  The City Side Cafe is a nice place to eat (a bit pricey) in the morning.  Since I had to do some work while in Sacramento, I appreciated the fact that they had the free computers with internet.  Also a plus is the close proximity of a few restaurants and the Arden Mall.

The cookies at night are a great idea!

I've stayed here a couple of times.  The rooms have rather old furniture in them, but they're spacious.  Since the hotel is kind of a "wheel," meaning the lobby is the hub and the spokes have the rooms, you have to walk quite far to get to your room in most cases.

There is internet access for a $10 per 24-hour fee, which I appreciate.  I found the hotel itself hard to find because 50 East/Capitol Expressway is really hard to locate.  Bring a good map and not just your mapquest directions.

Oh - the warm cookie they give you at check-in is a definite plus!

This is my third time staying at the Double, but first as a yelper. For the location, it isn't that bad - right across from the mall and in good location from some choice eating spots recommended by Sac yelpers.  Those cookies offered at check-in make me want to put on my "ohh! face", the hotel is a bit too spread out, the gym is kinda basic, but the rooms are newly renovated, the bed is super comfy and the Neutrogena toiletry freebies give it an extra point.  Plus, they let you double earn on airline miles and HHonors points.
