It's a decent restaurant with a Cajun theme. There is Mardi Gras stuff all over the walls and ceilings.  My king Crab legs with drawn butter were fine - the ceviche was not so much to my liking. There wasn't much fish, and lots of tomatoey sauce and green olives. . .? To me, that isn't really ceviche. . but you know, I ate it. I heard tell from others in my party that the steak and coconut salmon there are really great, but I didn't try.

Service was mediocre - but then again - I was there in a party of 20, so perhaps my view is a bit skewed.

I'd give it another try to go for one of the signature dishes and sit with a more average sized group of people before I'll cast too heavy of a judgement.

I splurged on a $60 meal. The only dish that earned that price tag is the halibut cerviche. But they jibbed me on the halibut with avacado substitute.

The place is very crowded in the summer. My main course was the mango/kiwi salmon. It was fresh but it lacks flavor.

I wouldn't come back here again.

OH-MY-GOODNESS! I loved it! This place is pricey for sure! Wow! But listen, sooooooo worth it! Apparently this was one of the Top 10 places to eat according to Food Network. I can see why! Wow! Salad was really good! They serve jalapeno bread before the meal and it was FREAKING AWESOME! I had lamb and it was great! My sister had the King Crab and it was huge and so much crab meat. She said she loved it! My parents had steak and my mom said it was the best she'd ever had anywhere in her life! My little nephew enjoyed his alfredo noodles too :-)

The dessert is BOMB! We tried the chocolate brownie cake with brownie, chocolate moose, chocolate whipped cream with a pecan crust...OUT OF THIS WORLD AMAZING! We all freaked out on how good it was!

The decor is hysterical! There is so much crap stuck on the walls and ceiling! It was way crowded and 100% packed! Apparently everyone knows that you have to get there right as they open to get a seat. It is so popular. And this place is LITERALLY in the middle of no where! Tucked away in a valley in the heart of all the trees, this little bitty eatery is so deserving of a 5! EAT HERE!

I was totally expecting that Yelp wouldn't have reached Girdwood, Alaska... that I alone would have to look up The Musky's address and info (groan) to enter it into the system. Lo and behold, it already has 11 reviews! I should have known...

This is not your average establishment. This is not like any restaurant I've had in Alaska (to say the least). In fact, I lived in New Orleans for two years and I am certain that the Double Musky could relocate to the French Quarter and still have a loyal following. There's a reason why my boyfriend and I show up to eat here before the restaurant opens and a reason why those who show up at 7 (mwhahaha!) have to face 2 hour lines. A lot of people love the Musky.

So I heard some complaints in other reviews. They ask, "Did I order the wrong thing?" In a word, probably. I'm sure there's mediocre food on the menu- no restaurant is perfect- I just know better than to order it. My boyfriend grew up in Anchorage and has been eating at the Double Musky for a long long time. He was my "tour guide" on the menu.

BEST DISHES: Pepper steak tips appetizer (my favorite!), Coconut Salmon appetizer, Battered Halibut and Fries appetizer (if you're sensing a trend, you've realized this is not a good place to be on a diet). Also love the entree sized Pepper Steak and the Shrimp and Scallop Cardinale.

The whole fried guinea hen always sounds amazing, but this is the kind of place where it's really hard to stray from your favorites. I will admit that although the Shrimp Etouffe is good, it is not really Etouffe. This wouldn't fly in New Orleans.

Last but not least... the dessert. Double musky pie and the Chocolate Mousse Pie-thingy are outrageously good. If you can't save room (which is likely), order it to go. You will want it later... trust me.

For my fiftieth review, I find myself in Alaska.  So, it is only fitting that I review the finest place I've eaten here.

Sixty miles South of Anchorage nestled among the trees in the ski hamlet of Girdwood is a goldmine of food.  Just to give you an idea of how good it is, I first have to explain how remote it is.  It's at least an hour from the nearest city (and a city up here is 1,000 people or more) and in my six visits, I have NEVER waited less than one hour to get a table.  Any place that you'll drive 2 hours or more round trip to eat has to be amazing!

Anyone who has been to Alaska in the winter will know why I live in San Diego.  It's gorgeous up here but there are some odd 'eccentricities' that shape Alaska.  Some include: snowmachining, reindeer sausage, going 'up on the slope', alcoholics and pull-tabs.  One of the great things is the Musky.

They have a Pepper Steak that has been rated as one of the best in the United States by a number of well-respected magazines.  We drove down tonight and ate the Jalapeno-Cheddar Cheese Bread, a nice salad, the famous 'Pepper Steak' (2 inches thick and cooked to perfection), and finished it off with the 'Double Musky Pie.'  Every bite of everything was amazing and it truly could be one of the best meals I have ever eaten.

If you are up this way and don't hit a moose, dog sled, or a drunk local on the way down, stop in at the Double Musky and treat yourself to a phenomenal meal.

All right, so check it out...Double Musky Inn is, by far, my favorite restaurant in Alaska.  I haven't been all over the state, but this is the place to beat.

For starters, the place is nestled (doesn't that word sound cozy?) just off of the main strip in Girdwood, on your way to Aleyska Resort.  The location is quiant and in a Southern-style decor with Alaska flavor.

The inside has ample seating and the place is ALWAYS packed, but that's okay.  Rarely is it overpacked, where you feel like you are at a K.I.S.S. concert in someone's basement and someone is microwaving a hot pocket.

The walls are decked out with everything from bottle caps, money, statues, you name it.  It has a lot of character from all over the world, which provides a very cool dining experience, especially if you are on an awkward date...you can easily segue conversation to something on the wall.

Then, order a drink.  There is plenty choose from, but I highly recommend getting the Blue Glacier.  They are, as we say, "the bomb."  You will suck them back like a man on a deserted island that just found a case of Aquafina.  Trust me on this.  And they put a cherry in it, so you know that's good.

The appetizers are very good, but nothing compared to the entrees.  The Crawfish Cheese dip is just too spicy...if you order it, order at least three glasses of water and a cannister of Whipped Cream.  Just because whipped cream is good and to see if they'll give it to you.

The jalapeno bread is great, which comes with every meal, but don't get too enthusiastic and fill up before the entree.

Double Muskey has a cajun style menu, which means that most of the food has a bit of a kick.  However, if you aren't into the spicy stuff, there are plenty of alternatives.

I have tried the crab stuffed Halibut (B+) and the Rib Special (B+) and my wife has had the Alligator stew (she is unavailable to grade as I am writing this, but I think she'd give it an A or A-), but my all-time favorite which I order without hesitation is the filet.

I know, I know.  Boooorrriiinnng.  Everyone orders the filet and is in search of the perfect one.  I get it.  Well, too bad.  This is my review and I saw it is the best.  Perfectly cooked and seasoned and every bite is like being able to fly like Superman and check your bank account to see ten million dollars in it.

That's an exaggeration, but you get the point.

And dessert.  Seriously, if you don't get the famous Double Musky pie then you are insane.  You should be committed and never allowed to order dessert from anywhere, EVER.  If you are too full from eating too much of the jalapeno bread that I TOLD you not to do, then order the pie to go.

They are very accomodating.  They will put it in a styrofoam box that you can take home and put in the fridge and eat late at night when your wife is in bed and she'll yell at you later but you won't care because it was so damn good that you know in your heart you would do it again and again.

They also have a cajun delight, which is amazing.  Do yourself a favor and order both.  If it's your first time (you lucky virgin you!) and you have a small group then you can all share and get a taste.  If you like it, order some to go.  BUT, do not skip it.  Trust me, the dessert is worth it at this place, unlike most other restaurants that serve you dessert out of a pre-packaged box.

And there it is.  If anyone ever comes to visit me in Alaska, which is rare, but at least an annual event, they have NO CHOICE but to go here.  I simply cannot let them return to their world of mega malls and Olive Garden's on every corner in the lower 48 without experiencing this superior place.

If you're planning on visiting, find someone, ANYONE, to take you here.  If not, well, have fun at T.G.I. Fridays (hint, it sucks just like all the others in every other state in the Union).

Cheers!

The service was absolutely horrible. We waited for over an hour to get a table and they were out of their "most famous dish" of beef kabobs. It is an expensive restaurant. The seating area is crammed.  The place also just sucks because there is crap all over the walls and ceilings.

I'll be honest with you - I live in the lower 48, and I would consider the trip to Alaska just to eat at the Double Musky.

It's been a while since I was there - but I have been 6-7 times. It's wise to either have a reservation or be ready to wait(bring a book). The food is worth waiting for.

They have a variety of appetizers that are worth your time. For those of you that don't enjoy beef - go with the Coconut Salmon; its breath taking. It makes coconut shrimp look like an infants play toy. If you enjoy a bit of beef and it won't ruin the entree then the steak tips with the pepper sauce is outstanding. And even if your going to get the ever famous pepper steak - who cares pile more on.

So, the French Pepper Steak is off the charts. I dont eat meat anymore - and I would still probably have to fall off the wagon for it. I have had it about 6 times. I was a monster steak eater then. I had traveled all through the lower 48 and had some good Anchorage steaks as well. The french pepper steak at the Double musky truly makes them all look like spam in a can. Its stupefying. Its so good that you hate yourself for not having ever had it before.

I just want to say that one night it was blizzard like conditions in Anchorage. And everyone that lives near Girdwood know that snow slides happen a lot on Highway 1 between Anchorage and Girdwood. And my brother and I still drove to girdwood for the French Pepper Steak. And yes - it was worth it. It was amazing. And of course there was not wait that night...LOL

So, if your in Anchorage - even if your on a cruise ship - get off your ass and rent a car and drive to Girdwood and eat some French Pepper Steak. It's really one of the best steaks in the country. I wish I could find the recipe for the pepper sauce without buying their stupid cookbook for one recipe:)

In fact - if you have the recipe by all means message me with it.

So, I have had lots of tasty dessert here too - but if you go - go for the Pepper Steak. And the service is always very professional as well.

I've heard a lot of good things about Double Musky and yum...

We had the Crawfish Cheese Dip appetizer which was spicy and oh so good.  Mmmm.

1st Entree: The infamous Pepper Steak:  It is amazing.  Normally a strip steak is tough and tasty, this cut of meat was ridiculously thick and tender, the crispness of the crust and the sauce were just awesome.  Yum.  And the thing is huge, too be honest, we were full before our meals arrived off of appetizers and salad.

2nd Entree: Shrimp and Sausage Jambalaya, while it's tasty, this meal is definitely NOT worth wasting a pricey meal at Double Musky over.  I recall making one of those New Orleans inspired rice dishes out of a box once, I added sausage and it was just as good and didn't cost me $30.

So, definitely do go to the Double Musky, definitely don't get that 2nd entree, yum.  I wish we hadn't been too full for a dessert, heh..

Ooh, also, I bought the cookbook that they have to offer and the pepper steak looks fairly simple to make.  I think I will definitely be using the cookbook in the future

Living in Alaska for 30 years, I've heard so many awesome compliments on this place, but never had the opportunity to visit until this past summer. My opinion was.... "You expect me to pay THIS PRICE for this type of CRUMMY atmosphere?" Seriously, the food is overpriced, in the summer months, it's not even worth the 1-2 hour wait. People are rude, the poor servers have to push their way through the crowds of people. It has a "dirty" feel to it. It's just TOO small to take walk-in's along with the reservations. By the time we actually got seated for dinner, we already had $100 on the tab for drinks and appetizers. Great for the restaurant, not so great for the customer. Save yourself the trip. Unless you like being treated like cattle and eating in a dirty barn.

Okay, Okay, I know, I am way overdue for a review of of Double-Musky, and I am not sure why I held off so long. Before I get into it, let me remind everybody that Double-Musky will be CLOSED from October 26th, 2008, thru December 10th, 2008. So if you were planning on coming, make sure it is after December 10th. I sort of wanted to be able to give it 5 Stars, but as it is I will give them 4. I have to admit the food preparation is great, and some of the dishes they serve are the best I have seen, and tasted. I was taken back by one dish, and I guess that is just a matter of preference. That was the Crab Stuffed halibut. I prefer mine with a "White Sauce", and they serve with a Brown Sauce. I know that it is a Cajun Style Restaurant, but still...my argument is Crab and Halibut needs a sweeter sauce, not a spicier. But like I said it is just me. But the rest of the Food...Oh My...if you want to try appetizers, then I would strongly recommend:
Cajun Mushrooms...whhhoooaaaa
Pepper Steak Tips....YEAAAAA
The Garlic Seafood Pasta for a Dinner
and the French Pepper Steak. You must and I mean MUST check out the Wine List. I think this is one of the most impressive that I have seen EVER. There were a few that I thought I would never see again, and the Double-Musky had then. I was privileged enough to be taken into the Wine Room and I got to check out the wines...most impressive. D.M will get the 5th star, but they have one small obstacle, that I won't snitch out...I am sure they can handle it....:) Worth the trip when they reopen.

This is a must eat when you're in Anchorage or heading down to the Kenai.  The pepper steak is what you order.  It has a thick crust on it that is very unusual but a great way to try  steak.  I don't normally eat anything on my medium rare steak but I didn't have any complaints.

The wine list was very good but not world class (I do live in Northern CA).

A big part of the experienc is driving down the scenic highway to the restaurant.  IF you're with a connected local, there is no wait....not even a single minute (so I can't speak to the complaints).

Definitely a unique and enjoyable dining experience.

What the heck.  This place advertises that they are the best.  The owners son is a sommiler and the wine list is so very impressive.  I am a Girdwood local and had the opportunity to visit three times in the last 12 months.  The service was very dissapointing.  The food seems to be good, but by the time you get it, each time members of my party received their food at differnt times, the food just was not worth the stress.  I actually do not remember the food, I just remember how horrible the service was.  Oh well, luckily there are many other options in Girdwood.

I also don't get this place.  Everyone raves, but I haven't had that experience.  What dishes are the rave ones?  I thought the place was filthy, and unattractive.  Service was okay, but nothing unusual.  I'll try it one more time, next summer when I get back up there.   Let me know where my disconnect is on this place.

The most overrated restaurant ever. From the minute I moved here, all I heard was "you gotta go to the Musky," even from fellow chefs. Finally going there was one of the most underwhelming dining experiences of my life. The scallop app (like most of the menu) is from an era when people thought adding more cream and butter was the only way to make things taste good. The steak (New York strip) wasn't bad and was friggin' huge, but I would have rather paid less and gotten a smaller portion than be forced to pay the absurd prices they charge. It took forever to get seated despite the fact the place was half empty (and it wasn't because they were spacing seatings. We were just ignored.) Our server was nice, but knew nothing about the menu. Overall, I would say go to Maxine's down the street, it's blows the Musky away.

Top 5 best meals of my life.  This place is expensive, but worth every penny.  You must try the crab stuffed halibut and the musky pie.  I've asked them to ship me the pie, but they won't.  I would fly back to AK just for this place.
