FYI: This is DHABA styled food - http://en.wikipedia.or...
So if you expect service and waiters busing the tables, DON'T COME HERE! This is like Indian fast food styled. Come, order, eat, throw away your trash, go.
Food here is extremely authentic and tasty, everything is made by hand. Great place to come if you want REAL dosa. Can get very crowded on weekends.

Not bad! Dosa's are very big, quite tasty, and rava masala dosa is my favorite! It's made with cream… Read more »
Where should I begin? The place is dirty as hell.the restroom is bad.have u peeked inside the kitchen? Best is yet to come.when hubby and I were eating,a roach walks by our plate. Yuck!!! We called one of the guys. He is the one with the glasses I think. He came, just took the roach in the napkin that we had caught it in and left. No apologies, no sorries.. No nothing. He just did it so matter of factly that I was stunned. His face did not register any emotions. I thought .. Ok if this what happens in front of a customer ...imagine how it is in the kitchen.on top of it, the floors were
strewn with dirt.. And trash can right next to the buffet. Am staying away forever. You figure what to do. I also. Checked the other reviews on
google. Horrible.
Self service. You bus your own tables.
The food is ok. But for the price I would expect the waiter to bus the tables.
Let me try to do justice here. First of all, I would like to say that till last year this place served very tasty food and was a preferred place for us to get vegetarian food. Then I noticed some changes in quality and taste and found out that the guys in the kitchen looked different than usual...further found out that they have opened new locations so guys have been transferred to the new location. Initial guys were good cook and very enthusiastic when they just opened this location in Fremont.
So, starting this year and really in last few months everything started to fall down...taste sucks, place is not clean, bad service across the board, chutneys started tasting funny ...and overall this place sucks now. We got so disappointed in with our visit last visit on last Friday that we decided not to return again. So good bye Dosa Place...you forgot the basic lesson that how you grew from one location to three or four....because of your food...so now food sucks...you should better do something about it...
thanks,
I really wanted to like this place. I walked in with w/ my girl and we are the only white people there. No problem, except she kept feeling put off by the looks. I kinda noticed it, but didn't care. I'm here, I'm white and I'm proud. So any ways after we order, I start getting attitude like "So you're gonna need a to-go box?!" I said no, we are gonna eat here. He didn't think we could eat it all, I looked the fool straight in the eye and said "Oh, I will eat it all right. We can put away a whole X-Large Pizza. Trust me."
So we sit, The food comes out one plate at a time, 4-5 minutes apart. We just start eating off each others plate. They bring out some stuff I didn't order instead of what I wanted. Never got the rice. I had to ask for rice. What?! Who doesn't bring the rice?
The spinach pakora was dry as Styrofoam.
$4.99 for some basic Dosa? Forget it... Madras Cafe in Sunnyvale to my recollection was cheaper and much better.
Talk about hole in the wall. It was half the size of my bathroom. Too close for comfort too. Seriously.
This was such a disappointment. I didn't need the attitude or looks. I have been to other Indian places where I have been the only white guy and never felt like that.
Oh yeah, after we left we stopped at the Burger Joint down the way since it was so anti-filling. I guess american stomach's require more substance. If I am spending $27 for two people, I better not have to buy a 1/4 lb. burger afterwards!
They have authentic and tasty dosa. They need to work on the place, its not clean, staff is not very friendly. weekends very crowdy, Try masal tea and coffee.
hmm, an update to an update.
The takeout does not work well. Its been twice that they messed up our to-go order.
We saw people come after us, that ate in and left. But still we didn't get our order. They had forgotten about one dosa.
I know we would go there, as it is close to bharat bazar and we have a thing for crowded places that occasionally deliver.

I tried dosa again. I have to say they offer decent varieties of dosas and they are tasty too.
I… Read more »
I've been here many times since I live a block away and can just walk. We're always the only non-Indians around and the place always has a line out the door (we tend to hit it up about 8 or 9 pm). It's a good quick bite to eat that's waaaaay better than the burger king across the street for about the same price.
The experience kind of varies by what you order, and I agree that it's hard to know what to order if you are not a dosa expert. But I've fumbled my way across the menu and everything was good. Just have an open mind. The little fried appetizer "night snacks" are interesting and yummy. I don't like the sambar but my husband loves it.
I heart fremont for giving me a decent dosa. Two weeks ago I went to Viks in Berkeley and was astonished at how popular the place was considering the mediocre over priced Indian fast food. So when I popped in here after a work meeting I was so happy to get some damn good dosas for a much more reasonable price. I always get the mysore because I like my dosas a little spicy but my man got the rava and that was tasty too. They only get 4 stars because although the sambar was good, it just did not wow me.
I will def. be a return customer.
OK I am no master of Indian Food. I eat it. It taste great. i eat some more.
But a friend of mine recently spent some time in India with an Indian family and says that this place is what one would call genuine. So since i like my tongue to be on fire at all times I made her take me here.
This place was delish. I saw nothing but natives there which always makes me think that the establishment is doing something right. This was definitely a different type of Indian restaurant than i am used to . From what I understand it is of a different region, but don't quote me on that.
This little hole in the wall pack a punch in flavor. All of the dishes I had were completely foreign to me and they were simply amazing. I can describe what I had but I have no idea what the names are.
I will say though the only down fall is the judgment placed when ordering your food. If a black chick and white chick walk into an Indian restaurant and we say, "could you make it hot please?" We expect it to be hot....i mean it was kinda spicy but definitely not to the point where we couldn't handle it. I wanna sweat some bullets when I eat spicy food.
All in all this place is really good, a bit far for me to go when a craving hits, but I may risk it.
This place uses WAAAAY too much styrofoam and other disposables. I get that it's fast food and whatnot, but it's really too much.
The masala dosa was definitely "meh." The sambar was not memorable.
I'd rather go to Swagat or Udupi.
One of the few places that has good sambhar and chutney and you can take as much as you like. Unusual for a south Indian restaurant but the Chinese food is good here too :)
The place has very less seating and can get crowded in the evenings.
Well my friends and i went here as a last resort because the other place was closed. We had no idea of what Dosa were or how they even tasted.
Dosa are big gigantic crepes that aren't very sweet, but more sour. Even the fried one had a distinct taste. I enjoyed the filling in the middle where it was a mild curry with potatoes.
the entire time i was craving naan, so this did not help with the craving at all.
The person helping us at the register was not really helpful, instead he was more like "you guys dont know what DOSA are?" kind of mood.
The food is very affordable. Clean place and lots of options from the self serve buffet-like cart.
The place is a real hole in the wall. If you're familiar with their Santa Clara location, then be prepared to find only 4 tables at this location. So not as spacious as the Santa Clara place. The food was also ok, thought not as good as the other location. If you're into just grabbing a quick bite just to fill your stomach, this place is good for that. But if you want to dine in with family or friends and are expecting service or a great dining experience, forget about it.
My experience at Dosa Place unleashed my inner brownness. I've never been a fan of Dosa's (don't hate), but I do occasionally eat them at a friends house. For some reason my whole family had a craving for Dosa's and decided to try this place out. Just a disclaimer: THIS IS FAST FOOD, not a sit down place like Udipi or Pasand. I had the Masala Dosa and it really brought me back to eating at Madras Cafe in King Circle, Mumbai (anyone, anyone?). The sambar and chutneys are self service. I must say though the sambar is pretty damn good. What really pushed my button was the Pongal. I'm Guju and this dish is really similar to Kichdi. YUM I would definitely come back here, and maybe even bring some of my non brown friends with me!
Great place to grab a dosa. No frills, get your own water, silverware, chutneys, sambar etc, but then isn't the dosa a no frills type of meal. The dosas themselves are very nice, always served hot and crisp. They offer 4 different types of sambar and 4 chutneys and you can help yourself to as much as you want so you don't have to worry about rationing. The peanut chutney is particularly good. I have tried the rava dosa, masala dosa and mysore masala dosa and all have been good. Don't come here looking for ambiance or service... or really anything other than good cheap dosas.
The place is located in a very drab shopping center in fremont, but there is a shop that sells indian sweets next door.
Went to this place for lunch with the boyfriend who had a hankering for some cheap, Indian, eats.
Pro's:
*You get a lot of food for cheap. We each got one of their combo plates (veggie biryani, veggie curries, soups, chai).
* They don't serve any meat, if they do they don't mention it. So this is a vegetarians dream.
*It's quick, it's fast, it's cheap.
Con's:
*Parking on a Sunday is horrid. It's in a strip mall that has a Farmer's Market going on right next door. So it's very chaotic.
* The menu is written in English, but with no explanations. So for example the biryani we got was called "Dosa Place Special Biryani"-that was it. Not until we got it did we know that it was darker in color and had a mix of stewed veggies.
All in all not a bad place. Personally I'd rather go to Pakwan across the street (they have an array of tandor cooked meats, but it's a little more expensive and you come out smelling like kabob) because I'm a meat eater. However, Dosa Place wasn't half bad, but I think next time I'll ask more questions as to what is what.
I was pleasantly surprised by this place. All the dosas are very good except paneer bhurjee dosa (paneer bhurjee was non-existent :)..). The sambhar and chutneys have an authentic S Indian taste. Its inexpensive, good helping...you can find ample parking.
The only bad part is the place is really tiny and cramped. I would recommend take out!!!!
Update 11/9/7: 2nd trip--with a heads-up that if you go, make sure to either read the register readout carefully, or have them repeat your order! Somehow, the vegetable korma with rice I ordered turned into malai kofta straight up on my table! Delicious, yes, but not quite what I ordered.

I've been eyeing this Indian vegetarian place ever since I saw it pop up between the Indian supermarket & the Indian music place... I had the chance to pop in for lunch this Saturday--and I'm very favorably impressed!
I got a thali for $6 bucks with sooo much food--more than most thalis at full-service restaurants, and definitely more than I could eat. Two people could have had a decently-satisfying lunch off of this thing. It was tasty, too, with a nice variety of flavors--curries, dry dishes, two types of rice, sambar, a sweet, and a few more things, too. It wasn't cheap crap--it was cheap, GOOD food.
Service: you go to the counter, read the big board & tell them what you want--both the guys on duty were very friendly, and I had my food within about a minute (as with many daily set menus, the food is prepared in quantity. Sort of like a Thanksgiving dinner, yah?). You get your own plasticware, napkins & chutneys, and the small place is very informal, let's put it that way. No frills, just good food at good prices.
The worst thing was that the busboy came out with a mop and a bucket full of what smelled like straight Pine-Sol. Fortunately, the boss guy told him quickly enough to get it out of there & do the job with water, so we would not all die of the fumes! So, I don't expect this will be repeated when you go.
But do go. I know I'll be back.
I am all about cheap Indian food, but this place wasn't up to par.
The dosas were ok, a bit soggy.
I was lame and ordered chili paneer at a dosa place, but man what a disappointment. It's literally some paneer cubes doused in a full bottle of Sriracha/chili paste. I could barely eat it! Good thing I had my mango lassi to ease the fire... that at least was pretty good.
Also, I had ordered my paneer with rice. It came served to me with no rice, and when I called this to attention the server guy said, "it doesn't come with rice." Well, ok, but I still paid $1.25 for the rice... so he goes to give me some, and it's LITERALLY 3 spoonfuls. Like barely enough to fit in the small section of a thali. WTF!
The price doesn't even justify the experience, because Spice Hut offers a similar menu at similar prices and is way better.
Small but efficient setup. No real service, you take your own plates, spoons and help yourself to the unlimited Sambar and Chutney bar.
We ordered:
Mysore Masala Dosa: Potato filing on a spicy paste laden dosa.Quite nice.
Paneer Bhurjee Dosa: excellent cottage cheese filing in a well made dosa.
Idli Vada: Very dense and tasty idli and the vada(savory indian doughnut) was likewise yummy.
Spring Dosa: I did not enjoy this at all,the dosa was loaded with vegetables but they seemed to be low on flavor.
Plain Rava Dosa: The star of our meal, perfectly crispy texture, not greasy at all. What a treat !!!
There were four of us and the restaurant was totally packed so we sat out on the side of the restaurant. It was a nice warm day and the breeze was just right.
Our bill for 5 dishes was $30 which was very reasonable for a whole lot of food as their portion are huge. Not to forget the Sambar is super tasty and the chutneys are very good too!
Will definitely go back :-)
I would have given 3.5 stars if I had choice. Can't give 4 because I am not a fan but would go there again.
Food is reasonably priced that is a plus point. Food is tasty as well.
Seating space is small so on weekends you may have to come back without eating.
My kids like to go there.
Try Combos if you want to try some thing.
They are under new management and the food is no longer any good. In fact, last time it was awful. Oh well... on to find something else!

Could it be? Finally there is a good South Indian place in Fremont. About time, considering this… Read more »
I go to the Dosa place for their piece de resistance - the Vijayanager Idli, steamed rice dumplings soaked in ghee and served with Sambhar and 'gunpowder'.
The place is a hole-in-the-wall and you should be happy with any seating you can grab when you get in. Don't expect much in ambience and service...but enjoy the tasty south indian food that you can't find in any of the Udupi palaces.
clean, well-lit, friendly and helpful service and an impressive selection of dosas, this is THE dosa place! we were slightly overwhelmed with the menu but ended up (after counsel from our friendly waiter) ordering the spicy veggie dosa and chef specialty dosa (crispy and spicy, filled with potato - my personal fave). each came with 2 sauces and the standard soup.
"satisfactory" bathrooms too! (per stephen h.'s wife!)
the dosas here were decent, but smaller than other places such as Pasand in Santa Clara. This is more of a "fast food" dosa place because it is pretty cheap and fast. Had the masala dosa which was good and also a mango lassi which was good too. Not much seating and gets pretty crowded.
Just what a Dosa place should be, delicious and cheap food in a no frills type of environment. The Rava dosa and mysore masala dosa were both fantastic. The aloo mixture in the middle had a bit too much turmeric, my fingers turned yellow. I like the self service chutney and sambar bars. Service is decent, kind of the standard south Indian service that you would expect. Uthapam was not that great. All in all a pretty good deal for 5 bucks.
The place is really good for quick-weekend-lunch. It is very close to a very big Indian grocery store. I think that is the biggest advantage for them. The place is inexpensive. You spend 14-15$ for 2 persons meal and the meal is really filling. Good dosas and great chutneys.
The place is very small and it's possible that you will not find a place always.
I have tried everything they serve and now always get their Combo-2 or Chettinad dosai. The management is good too.
Kids love the kids combo. Very few Indian restaurants take care of kids meals.
i hate this place its the worst food i ever had in my life i was disappointed i would rather go to LOVELY SWEETS round the corner.
South Indian fast food place. Prices are very reasonable and enough food for lunch!
Went here with friends from Mumbai and Kerla. Both really liked the food, I loved the crispy dosa with almost a parmesan cheese like taste to the crepe. The Indian kitchen is regional and diverse. I am just starting to learn the cuisine, a little. The variety spices and ingredients used are amazing and this Dosa place is a great example if you look at the diversity through the sambar offerings. Cultures are reflected through their kitchens starting from this premise or lens, the Indian culture is diverse, complicated and rich in its offerings.
Ok Food. Ordered Dosa, Idli, Utappam when I went with my friends. Nothing much special about it but not a waste. Ok for the price and taste.
I've eaten here once, about three years ago and I went back for the second time recently. It didn't take long for me to realize why I liked this place so much back then and still today. The food they make is as authentic as South Indian dishes can get, trust me I know because I was born down there and raised on these types of foods. The selections that you are given are up on this big sign above the register and they consist of either individual selections or the 6 to 7 types of combo plates. The pricing for their menu is very reasonable, the combo plates are $5.99. Along with the combo's you are also given an unlimited amount of chutney and sambar, freakin delicious! The service is descent, seating is very small (so right when you enter you better have a buddy claim a table), but besides those minute blemishes, this place is very clean and as you'll see surprisingly descent. Can't wait to go back again........maybe tomorrow?
