    This is by far the best South Indian you will find in the area! Try the Uttapams and you will not be sorry! Compare their sambar to that of anything offered in Philadelphia..which is for some reason always freezing cold to tepid, and it will be worth the schlep. Can you get better South Indian in Jackson Heights or Edison? Of course...but this is Philadelphia! The service is very friendly, and if you're lucky you will catch a cricket match or two.

    Sadly, I wish it were closer to the city.

    First I should say I prefer Northern Indian cuisine,although I have had excellent southern Indian food in the past.We went for entrees even though the name clearly calls itself a Chaat house.Sorry we wanted meat and thick sauce over basmati rice.We had Paneer Makni ,Tikka chicken Masala, and a Indo Chinese noodle dish.The noodle dish was a yawn.The other 2 the chef went crazy with whole cloves.Both dishes lacked the cream that was called for to make the dish as luscious as it should have been.The portions were small and the rice seemed not to be basmati ? We  were served on china plates and silverware,so perhaps the Styrofoam is a thing of the past.
    I doubt we will be back.

    At first I was thrown off by Dosa Hut's location then remembered the sheer number of Indian places just a few zip codes over. Random or not, they attract a good crowd, and their prices are appropriate for a suburban Indian joint.

    Wish their Indo-Chinese dishes were a bit more Indian. Of these, we had their egg noodles ($8.00) and chicken fried rice ($9.95). The former was decent, but the latter's rice was prepared Indian-style with barely any garlic.

    Fortunately Dosa Hut knows their Indian. Start with their Chicken 65 ($6.95), deep-fried marinated cuts of chicken with a healthy, spicy kick. Their chettinad ($13.95) is a must, and if you're lucky enough to score goat, do so. For a safe standby, ask for their chicken tikka masala ($11.95), marinated in yogurt and spices, roasted on a skewer and sauteed in tomato sauce. It's buttery, so ask for naan or chapati to sop it up.

    (4.5) ~ Very Good ~ Overall (Food & Service)

    PLEASE NOTE: There's plenty of Parking in the back and they do take Credit Cards(MC & Visa).  It's VERY CASUAL with Styrofoam Cups & Plastic Spoons, but it's worth it, b/k the food is VERY GOOD.  Many of the patrons are Indians, which is a good sign of the authenticity of the food.  The TV's are always showing Bollywood Programs too:-)

    MENU
    * Mango Lassi = (4.5) Very Good
    * Lamb Biriyani = (4.5) Very Good
    * Rasmalai (dessert) = (4.5) Very Good
    * Onion/Chilli Uthappam = (4) very good; came with (3) sauces
    * Onion Dosa = (3.5) good; came with (3) sauces.
    * Indian Chai = (3.5) good

    NOTES: This is Southern Indian Cuisine, which emphasizes more Vegetarian Items than the more common Northern Indian Cuisine.  Don't worry "Carnivores" they still serve MEAT dishes;-)  The Lamb Biriyani is a very good substitute for Lamb Vindaloo fans and I actually think it tastes better:-)

    I really like this place....being an South indian, who was born and raised in north India, I get to taste the best of both worlds. Whenever we get a craving for the chats, its probably as good as it gets in this area. The south Indian food is great, the dosa's, Utthappams and combo thalis are pretty good and reasonable priced.
    Would definitely go there as often as we can

    I've been twice as I'll always give a place the benefit of doubt after a rocky start. My first lunch there, I was put off by the stainless steel tables (like in a restaurant kitchen), hard counter stools and styrofoam/plastic plates and utensils. My rice and chicken dish was very dry, overly spiced (IMHO) and service slow.

    My second time, I went for dinner. I had to move my seating location as,  in many spots, the high intensity track lighting is aimed directly at the patrons' faces rather than reflected off the walls and ceiling. Again, service was very slow as my waiter chatted extensively with a large table Indians seeming oblivious to my need for water and the status of my perhaps forgotten entree. The very large dosa that eventually showed up was good but too large to finish. Heating it the next day just didn't work.

    Two blocks down the road, we now have Spice Kitchen in Trooper next to the Acme. It may be regionally different cuisine, but is much more comfortable, accommodating and attentive.

    The place is small, inviting, and clean. However, the service may be a bit forgetful. On two occasions, my dining companion ordered soda and we didn't receive until we were halfway done with our dosas after much prompting.

    Otherwise, they offer great dosas (e.g. rava, mysore masala, etc.). You're not coming here for the ambiance. You come here for the dosas. Haven't tried their chaats yet. Plastic utensils. Simple and basic.

    Don't really feel like driving all the way out there though :-/

    It is South Indian food which differs from the other well-known dishes such as butter chicken. Are they the best? No but they offer good food for a reasonable price.

    The restaurant is basic... can even call it a "tiffin" concept imported from southern India.

    The dosas are good. They are large, crispy yet soft and come with an acceptable sambar and chutney. I would rate the food 3.5 out of 5.

    The service I have found to be good but could be better. They are packed around dinner on weekends, therefore, the service is slow then. The service is 3.5 out of 5.

    They earn an extra half a point for their fried fish and lollipop chicken. They are delicious and are loads better if you dine in. They are like fries... Not made for takeout. They lose their crispness!

    Definitely recommend it!

    South Indian is a style of cuisine we have too little of in the greater Philadelphia area. Dosa Hut and Chaat House is doing a great job in representing it. If want a Dosa.. go here.

    The restaurant is in the first floor of a house. Two sided dining room, with televisions showing Indian soap operas.

    Menu is extensive but I was there for the Dosa. I had a Mysore Masala Dosa. It is a generous portion, served with several sauces to accompany it. Service is a bit slow, but not to the point of being annoying. Worth a trip.

    Dosa heaven. Try the chicken 65 and the onion pakora.  Chicken chettinad is superb.

    This is not your typical Indian place. You will be very pleased if you genuinely enjoy Indian cuisine.

    No nonsense here and no frills.  Plastic spoons and plates.

    Went there this weekend (Sat) in the afternoon time. Had the Dosa and masala chai. Pretty good! Will go and try their north Indian dishes next time. Not to mention that Hyderabadi Biryani looked pretty tempting.
    Good service, clean rest, BIG window into the kitchen. The general area around has families, so luck of the draw if you go at a time when there are no families, otherwise the ambiance will include kids. They don't bother me, but just thought I'd mention it.

    Amazing Indian food! Reasonably price, well made Indian food in a very casual atmosphere that I wish was closer to the city.

    My friend introduced it to me for lunch once. We loved everything we had-- dahi aloo puri, vegetable biriyani and spinach masala dosa-- and were stuffed. I am definitely looking forward to going back for more.

    It was also encouraging to see a lot of Indian families filling the restaurant.

    I've only had take-out from this place once, so I'm not going to comment on the service, decor, or ambiance. I was impressed with the food, but not as impressed as I was hoping to be. If Yelp had half-stars, I'd give this place three-and-a-half stars, I think. Here's what I had: Chicken 65, Samosa Chat, Palak Paneer, and Gobi Manchurian, along with a vegetable utappam and an order of naan. My overall verdict on the food is that it's good, but not spectacular.

    You know that Anne Tyler novel, "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant"? It's one of the best fictional treatments of food as a theme in contemporary American writing, if you ask me, not that you did (and there's no extra charge for the book recommendation either). Anyhow, the cook and restaurateur Ezra Tull, in the book, is always talking about how his food is "made with love." I just never quite got the sense that the food at this place is made with love. It's made with skill and competence, but it didn't make me want to jump out of my chair and applaud, you know? I should also add, as a disclaimer, that I like South Indian food but I'm definitely no connoisseur, so, take that for whatever it's worth.

    Here's the run-down. The chicken appetizer was tasty but a little dry; the palak paneer was a bit too soupy; the bread and utappam were, well, just a little boring. The sambar was nice but a little on the bland side. The samosa chat got my attention -- lots of big chutney flavor and the right mix of samosa dough and chickpeas for a really substantial chunky consistency. And then I really got interested when I tried the gobi Manchurian, which I'd never had before. If you don't know it, it's basically dry-fried cauliflower in a sauce that'll remind you of sweet-and-sour Cantonese dishes, except that it really isn't sweet (just a hint of pineapple) and it has a nice chili kick. It was a little too spicy for my wife, but I thought it was just right.

    So there you have it. I'll definitely order the gobi Manchurian again, and I love dosas, so I'm going to give them a shot as well. Other reviewers like the biryanis The other stuff I tried was, well, just not quite as exciting as I'd hoped, but still good. I'll be back, for sure.

    I'm leaving you Meatloaf. I've found someone else.

    First a little background on who I am. Irish American. Raised on Meat, Potatoes and Kraft Macaroni & Cheese (or is it Cheese & Macaroni?). So my taste buds have lain dormant for years.  Fast Forward 30 years ahead...

    I work in Oaks, PA. I have a couple of Indian friends that suggested we go to the Dosa Hut for lunch which is about 5 minutes away. I go there and I tell them I like Spicey (Hot) foods. They tell me to go for the Chicken Biryani.

    10 minutes later and I'm sweating. This stuff is pretty Spicey. I like it but I am not sure I like the sweating.

    I go home that night and suddenly realize that I crave the taste!

    Since the first visit I have gone to Dosa Hut 4 times in 3 months. I have tried the other dishes and they are good but i recommend an order of Samosa and the Chicken Biryani. Its real good.

    The CONS: The place is very small and there is no real decor. The food is served on plastic plates with plastic forks.

    To CONSIDER: The food must be that good if it lacks any presentation whatsoever (see: "The CONS")

    Been here for a couple of times,Basic ambiance, basic menu,basic everything. I have just tried the Dosas, Guess that after Uduppi closed down, the best dosa's in this vicinity are now available here.I drive in from Central Philly to Bensalem just for the South Indian food
    I tried the somosa's they were refried and not tasty at all, neither was the Chaat.
    Loved the pastries ( All of them taste the same,Pinapple flavor) Reminded me about the pastries back home in India.
    Picked up a packet of Pao (Mumbai's favorite street food Bun), as I make a mean Bhaji (The potato / Cabbage/Pea dish) they turned out really authentic.

    Dosa Hut & Chat House is a bit of a conundrum. On one hand the food is excellent. Supremely fresh and with a variety of Indian dishes that you may not find elsewhere. If you grow tired of chicken tikka, butter chicken, and other items you'll find en masse at other Indian restaurants, Dosa Hut is a great place to visit. Given the name, you'd expect that the dosas, utappams, and chats are prepared quite well and indeed they are. You really won't go wrong with any of them. The curries are also consistently tasty, but not the best I've ever had. For what you get, I think the pricing is a tad high but is not unreasonable.

    Where I have trouble giving DH&CH 5 stars is the service and environment. On a Friday, during lunch--which you'd imagine is the busiest period during the entire week--they had ONE employee staffing the entire dining room of 40 or so patrons. With the entire dining room filled up (so much so that we actually shared a table with other people) and other patrons waiting outside for a seat to open up, with one guy waiting on the entire room made it difficult to get any service. Speaking of the dining room, it consists of high stainless steel tables, swivel chairs probably from a discount hotel furniture store, and styrofoam/plastic dining ware.

    I think I'd peg DH&CH at 3.5 stars.... the food really is excellent and I have no reservations about heading back frequently, but they really need to bring the other aspects of the experience up to the same level as the cuisine. That being said, my official Yelp ranking will be 4 because it's great to have tasty and different Indian food in the area.

    The good news is that they have expanded, upgraded the building and the stainless steel tables have been replaced with wooden/resin(?) ones.

    The bad news is that for the first time I got a not-so great dish served (the puri of the Dahi aloo puri was stale) and when I brought it to the attention of the server, he was not sure what to do about it.  Its not the end of the world and the dosa, biryani and chicken makhani still rocked.

    I think I turned my colleagues into Gobi Manchurian adicts. Try the dry version if you have not. It is cauliflower made in an Indo-Chinese style, but you will think you are eating meat.

    This place is HARD TO FIND. Do not look for it in the dark if you're unfamiliar with the town.

    The food was great, but I found the malai kofta to be too rich (which  might be just me -- I'm not so much for the rich, creamy dishes from any country). My dining partner got kadai paneer that was fragrant, spicy, and amazing and the paratha we shared was very, very good. It's so nice to find southern Indian cuisine in the area. We didn't try the dosa, but you can bet we'll be going back to do just that.

    The dishes are all styrofoam, which tugged at my tree-hugging, middle-class hippie heart. Maybe if a lot of people eat there, they'll be able to invest in some real bowls and hire a dishwasher? One can hope.

    We are soooo glad to have this really awesome place near us. The food is extremely good, very ethinic and the BEST south Indian you could get, also their chat items are really good. The place is pretty small, but they are expanding it (under construction), so very soon I think that lil piece will be fixed too. The cooks and staff there are very freindly, everything is freshly made and brought to the table HOT!

    Their Best: Dosa, Idly, Uttapam, Lamb Curry, Chicken 65, Cutlet, samosa chat, pav bhaji, indo-chinese stuff, Sweet-lassi (BEST)....I would say pretty much everything there on their menu card :)

    I would recommend this place, if you really enjoy GOOD FOOD!

    We walked in and were the only non-Indian people in the place, which is generally a good sign.  And so it was here.

    I've had a difficult time finding South Indian food in the Philadelphia area, so I was pleased to hear about this place.  The menu is extensive, featuring lots of dishes from both the north and south.  All the food I tried was excellent (and I tried a lot).  My lassi was very good, too; I think many restaurants tend to oversweeten them, but mine was nice and tangy.  The prices were also cheaper than just about every other Indian restaurant I've tried in the area.

    I can't help but feel guilty eating here, though, as it has to be the least environmentally friendly restaurant I've ever been to.  Plastic utensils, styrofoam cups, styrofoam plates...and an Indian meal typically uses a lot of dishes, so those add up quickly.  I'm surprised the tables aren't styrofoam, too, so they can just throw them away after every meal instead of wiping them down.

    Overall, it was a great meal, and I'll be back, though I might bring my own silverware next time.

    The food was excellent and the prices are the best of any Indian restaurant that I've been to.  Judging by comments from other reviewers, they must have recently upgraded to real dishes and silverware. Everything was served in matching white Corningware.  The atmosphere was bright and clean but made it feel like fast food.  It would benefit the overall experience greatly if they dimmed the lights a bit, put a candle  on each table and hung some Indian decor on their bare walls.

    My boyfriend and I were the only non-Indian people in there, which we took as a good sign.  We both love Indian food and found the dishes very tasty and spiced perfectly.  We started off with Indian Chai tea, which was good, but a bit too milky and not spicy enough for our taste.  Then everything else we ordered arrived all at once.  We were surprised by how fast we got our food, but our small table barely was enough space to hold all the dishes.

    We ordered a lot of food, where to start?  We had the Spinach Masala Dosa which was huge!  It was very good and very spicy.   The only complaint about it is that the middle of the dosa was about 2 inches thick with all the spicy potato/onion mixture, but at least 5 inches on either side of that lump was plain crepe.  Maybe that's how it's supposed to be served, but we would have preferred it spread throughout the dosa.  We also had the Paneer Butter Masala and the Chicken Pepper Fry, both were really good!  We both agreed that our very favorite dishes were the Lamb Chettinad and the Aloo Paratha.  Highly recommended!

    We were both very impressed with this little place and will definitely stop in again if we're in the area.  We found out about it through http://restaurant.com where we got a $25 gift certificate.  We use these often at restaurants and always read the exclusions thoroughly to make sure that we meet it's requirements.  When we presented the gift certificate, we were told that we couldn't use it because it was the weekend. We pointed out that it was not an exclusion on the gift certificate.  Then the waiter changed his story to tell us that it wasn't being honored because it was a holiday. (Apparently every Sunday is celebrated as a holiday in India.) There's a happy ending to this story because the manager decided to honor it for us anyway and that's why they're getting 4 stars. :)

They even thought me how to say thank you in there language, of course i asked first. Very casual. Everything is awesome except for one thing, something which is unavoidable; plan to smell like a delicious Indian cuisine when you leave. So you may not want to go to the movies or hangout in a public place afterward. I know from experience, some one told me I smelled funny. :D Awesome place!

    Went there last eve with a friend...hadn't been to Dosa Chaat House since they renovated, always thought the food was top-notch, but the ambiance left something to be desired...WELL, that is all corrected now...everything we had was amazing, the vegetable cutlets (appetizer), the chicken 65, just thinking of it makes me sorta drool, the paper dosa, oh yum, and the uthappam, we ordered way too much since the portions are generous but once we started eating we wanted to taste everything. Our waiter was knowledgeable & very pleasant, he gave us great suggestions & warned us that we were over-ordering...
    btw, my friend is what i call white bread, not terribly adventurous when it comes to food, and she was scarfing the food in as fast as she could...she loved it...
    It's byob, and they give you wind glasses as needed.
    I'm trying to decide what I'll try next time I go...

    Best Hyderabadi Biryani in the Western Phllly Suburbs. Indian Chinese is pretty decent, but more on the sweeter side than "Hyderabadi" spicy. Traditional South Indian fares like Dosas, Uthappas are pretty good. We go to the place at least once a week for the Hyderabadi Biryani. Decor has been updated in the last couple of months and looks pretty nice. Try it - you cannot go wrong with this place.

    I tried the Dosa Hut for the first time today and I have mixed feelings.  The food is pretty good, but the atmosphere feels like a fast food restaurant and everything is served on styrofoam with plastic silverware.  I had the vegetable biriyani, which was ok.  I like the biriyani from Aman's better.  My boyfriend got the spinach masala dosa and that was good.  I would recommend the Dosa Hut if you want a dosa.  I think next time I would prefer to get take out rather than eat in, there isn't much customer service or atmosphere to speak of.  I find the eating experience more pleasant at Aman's in East Norriton and they have dosas as well.  The staff there is more friendly and have real plates and silver ware.

    I love Indian food, it's just simply the best.  I found Dosa Hut to be tasty and reasonable.  However, I can't give it the full 5 stars (more like 4.75...)because I find the food to be inconsistent- I love Chicken Makahani (sp?), but at times it is thick and spicy and other times it is just runny and bland.  I only get this dish so I feel pretty confident in my reviewing of the dish.  My husband gets the dosas and other curry dishes and they are all very good.   They recently re-furnished the place but I wasn't never bothered by the plasticware and metal tables anyway- I was there for the food.  I will keep going back for sure!

    Food is decent.  Service is average.  Could be a lot better.  Choices in menu are good.

    Holy Yum! This food is really good.
    The website is a bit misleading though since it has a very clean and modern feel. The actual restaurant is really a little shack of a place as the name implies. I don't mind it. It adds to the low key ambiance. It's super casual there. The place has a weird set up. we sat in the front by the window which was on some kind of platform, but it was nice and private. The rest of the place was cafeteria looking. The kitchen is open and behind the register which is kind of cool since you can watch them making dosas.
    The menu doesn't have descriptions (not when I went). I ordered the Mutter Paneer. It was super delicious. But, I have never had that dish made so rich. It was thicker than normal, too. We also ordered samosas which were great and not too greasy like a lot of samosas can be. The Masala Dosa was also superb. It seemed like most people were eating dosas.

    I'm not Indian, but it's my favorite food and this seemed very authentic. The menu also seemed to be strictly south Indian with a few standards rather than a variety like most restaurants around Philly have.

    The website says they have naan, but there were none on the menu.

    I wish it was closer. I would go so often. definitely worth the visit.

    The food gets "Best in Show"

    This place does Indian better than any other local Pizza place does pizza, any local steakhouse does steak, any local Italian does Italian, etc.... It's that good.

    I've been eating Indian for about 25 years and have been to about 40 or so Indian restaurants in my life and this place is the best I've ever had.

    Dosa Hut has good service, the best Indian food ever (besides homecooked), is BYOB and has lots of vegetarian options! The ambiance is plain but it just reinforces the overall value of the foods'  goodness. A meal here outweighs any cosmetic weakness a critic could dream up. It's simply not a factor after you've had the food. It's a comfortable, low key, cafe-style space and the owner and staff are hospitable with a no-fluff approach to the business of lunch and dinner. After about my fourth time eating here I finally feel like I can give a comprehensive review. But just eat here and find out for yourself. You won't regret trying the lunch specials, the spinach/potato dosa, channa massala, or the fried rice dishes. We can't speak to the meat choices but it sounds like other reviewers recommend them highly.

    A cute little place! And I am not exaggerating, it is a little place. There are 6 tables in total, each can sit about 5 people at best. So be prepared to wait for a bit when you come during dinner time. The per head costs have been kept to a minimum with thermocol plates and bowls and plastic cutlery. The food is snappy, spicy and if you are/were fond of small places back home in India then go for it. They have definitely got it right as far as bringing you that familiar chaat atmosphere. Do not expect exquisite flavors. But if you are college kid who wants to brunch out with friends it is a definite must. The price is very reasonable. The menu is predominantly south indian (including non veg southie) and also a limited menu of desi-chinese. If you are not an Indian you must try it because of the menu it offers. They have quite a few items in the menu that are not the standard fare you get in Indian restaurants here. It is definitely worth going once, and if you like spicy food you will try again.

    the place is really small, and there's no real decor to speak of, but the food is awesome! try their Dosa and Uttapams. It's a great place to grab lunch with friends (definitely not clients). Plus the price is reasonable. You'd have to goto edison or NYC to get this type of quality south indian food.
