Review from Jason M.
Best hot dog place in the Hartford metro area. I mean, who else serves footlong hot dogs, and can honestly claim it's their THIRD longest hot dog?
That's right, they have 16" hot dogs, and simply monstrous 2-foot-long hot dogs. Insane! Plus, all of their dogs are reportedly made locally at a factory in New Britain. This makes Doogie's a much more unique experience than going to some hot dog cart with a bunch of Oscar Mayers floating around in water...
Lots of toppings are available too. Yummy chili, cheese, onions, the works! And the service is fast and [usually] friendly.
Just a few downsides: First of all, I don't think they sell booze. Would be nice if they at least had a few beers on hand. Secondly, I wouldn't exactly call the ambience factor an A+. They're supposedly going for a 50's car hop kinda theme, but it doesn't really work for me. Let's just say I wouldn't take a first date there.
These are minor bones to pick though. Doogie's is still great when you're bringing friends out for a cheap dinner, or stopping by alone for a cheap lunch. Just make sure you've got someone to share with if you get the 2-footer! -

2 foot long chili cheese dog. I've done it every time I go. Get it while its still there. Bread is so good along with the amazing chili makes it easy to finish.

Visited here on a work trip with some coworkers. It looks. Bit sketchy from the outside, but the inside is old fashioned and clean. I thought the prices were decent, but the fries were expensive and included a "free" drink- which you definitely paid for in the price of the fries.
I left stuffed! I had a 10inch hotdog with sauteed onions and sweet potato fries. Hot dog was really big! The taste was decent and the bun was soft and fresh tasting.
I have a weakness for Sweet Potato fries and they were pretty good. A little on the soft side, but I still enjoyed them.
One of the guys I was with got the 2 ft hot dog with Chili. He at the whole thing and it was served basically on a baguette. It was massive. I tried one of his onion rings and they were very good.
Overall, a neat place to visit if you are in the area. I haven't had the opportunity to go to a "hot dog place" like that before. The burgers and philly cheese steaks looked really good too. -

My wife picked up a steak and cheese, coleslaw and a cheese covered dog. When we opened the dog it looked like it couldn't have cost more than 50 cents bc it was so small. It tasty ok but kind of crappy for a dog place. The steak and cheese was pretty good though it was loaded with meat, the bread was soft and it tasted great. I would def go back for that. The slaw lacked flavor.

This review is for the hot dog...
...which was pretty good but not exceptional. The bun was close to being really, really good. It was toasted well but needed a bit more fat to really be just how I like a toasted dog bun.
The dog was actually a bit charred on the outside in places, as if it were grilled. Tasty, and quite unusual for Connecticut.
Unfortunately the sauce was not up to par. Mostly flavorless, bordering on a Hormel-like taste (no offense to the good people at Hormel).
Over all a tasty if unexceptional dog. I would come back but would probably go for something other than just a dog with sauce. Maybe some cheese would help.Listed in: Hot dogs in Connecticut

If you like hot dogs, this is the place to go....
Once you enter Doogies you are tossed into the 50s-60s with Elvis and other long gone celebrities coming from the speakers. The layout is simple cafeteria style with tables and chairs. This is NOT a fancy restaurant so dont walk in here expecting padded booth seats, waiters, and chandeliers. This is a diner style restaurant. You order your food and sit until its ready, then go get it, sit, and eat it. Its also not the cleanest place but like I said, this is diner style eating. Fast and simple.
The food is pretty much burgers, fries, some sandwiches, and some seafood. The hot dogs can be up to 24" long and served with several condiments. The burgers and fries are great. I recommend the 16" chili cheese dogs.
Food is a bit pricey (a 16" chili cheese dog is $6.79). Add fries and a large drink and you are around $12.00. But its worth it. No alcohol is served here, so dont expect a brew with your food.
Also, last time I was there they had some Murder Burger advertised. It was some 6 pound monster with fries for $20.00 and if you ate it in 45 mins and kept it down, you could rename it. My son thinks he can do it. Kids....will they ever learn? -

What puts this place on the map in my book are their cheese steaks! They are so naughty and delicious. A cheese steak with a side of sweet potato fries and I'm all set.
This place does not have good dogs. You would think with the name Doogies it would. Years ago when they had the two footer I ate their dogs. They were nothing special. They pushed the two footer stating Doogies "home of the two foot long hot dog". Now you dont see it offered. Why, because their hot dogs are mediocre at best.
What kind of atmosphere do you expect for a dog/burger joint? The psychedelic yellow is a little annoying and headachy.

Hooray for hot dogs! I love Doogies, its one of those places where you go because you know what you like there, and you can count on it always tasting good. My regular order is a rueben dog with grilled onions, curly fries, and a cherry coke. Pretty simple, but it hits the spot every time. A little rundown, the atmosphere isn't the best, but it is what it is , and its a good hot dog! Thank you Doogies!

OK, I have a somewhat well known picture with the 2-foot hotdog but the best dish here is the cheese steak. The place is campy and cool enough to earn the extra star based on the food alone

Right down the middle. Not th best dog around, but it isn't bad and the meal deals are good. A kraut dog for $3.50 is maybe a bit high, but whatever... they are consistent and they make a good dog. Everything after that is optional.

I love hot dogs and I am on a mission to find the best hot dog restaurant. Doogies was on that list. I have scratched them since I ate there this afternoon. I doubt I will return.
I have no idea of the history or tradition that is Doogies. I can only comment on the 10'' I consumed. It was okay. The flavor reminded me of a coney or white hot, it had that zing to it. I figured it would be a skinnier dog since they boast long dogs, and it was thin, I prefer my dogs to have some girth to them. I have no details on the brand of the dog.
I also ordered the cole slaw and sweet potato fries. All were decent but I have had much better.
As for the rest of the menu the dogs can come prepared all sorts of ways as well as the fries, with chili, kraut, cheese, onions, etc. It is a decent alternative to your fast food chain, and I like the 50's music but other than that there is very little appeal. Doogies has quite the following though. Sat. afternoon @ 2pm during a holiday weekend the place was packed. -

I went to Doogies after reading so many times about how great the hot dogs were there. Please be aware that when you initially walk into this establishment, calling it a dive would be an understatement. This place is small and grimey. Of course this didn't deter my boyfriend and I from eating there. The hot dogs were pedestrian. I didn't find anything special about them at all.

I had the curiously strange yearning for a hot dog the other day, we were in Newington so my husband suggested Doogies, apparently he had heard good things. So we went. It is what you would expect a hot dog place to look like. The tables were clean so I was a happy girl. But man was I disappointed when I got my hot dog...it was just ordinary. No special relishes or sauces like you see on tv. Just a run of the mill hot dog.

I visited for the first time on Sat. 2/6 after discovering Doogie's on Man vs. Food. Doogie himself was present and took my order. When he found out it was my first time eating here, he extolled the virtues of his 7-time Best in CT award winning seafood as well as the widely revered Philly cheese steak.
I ordered two 10" dogs - one with the works and one with kraut. Both were great, particularly because the dog & bun were not greasy at all. The same can be said for the regular fries and clam strips. The strips, breaded to order, had a pleasant fresh flavor and soft texture.
Doogie made the rounds in the dining room, making sure everyone was pleased with their order. I let him know that I will be sure to visit again! -

it's hard to find a bad hot dog, unless it's from a packet in Stop n Shop or somewhere. I love the dogs here though. Cooked just right every time and very tasty for a foodt ype that is , well...not the most wonderful overall. Their dogs taste very good, bun is great and the two footer they have tastes the same a s the small dogs. Their menu is big and very cheap to eat off. I recommend it. Nice people too !!

came here after seeing the absurd 2 foot hot dog on Man v Food, just had to see it. it is more massive than you think. i am 6 foot tall and it was longer than from my finger tips to my elbow! the dog itself was ok, too salty, but the chili on top was delicious and the bread was well made.

After seeing it on Man vs. Food, I decided to check Doogie's out. I was disappointed. The place is fairly run-down, which I don't mind. I focus on food. The hot dogs were huge, but not as tasty as other hot dogs that I've had. We were expecting a variety of toppings but they only have onions, cheeze whiz, peppers, and chili (and condiments). I got the works. The chili was watery with little meat. We got onion rings and weren't incredibly impressed. Overall, I'd go to Frankie's in Waterbury if I wanted a hot dog again. Next, I plan to try Woody's in Hartford. They seem to have many more choices for toppings and types of dogs.
